Getting error message that the "Front Right Side Marker Light Defective". The light appears to be operational. Searched for this issue and Audi recalled some models but many users outside the current recall report this same issue. Please expand the vin numbers for the recall action for safety.

Dec 28, 2025

I was driving last night and the "marker light is defective" error came on. This is a well documented defect in the Audi Q7 and many are subject to recall for this issue.

Dec 26, 2025

Dash light is on saying “Front right marker light is defective”. However, the marker light appears to be fine. This seems to be a software issue.

Dec 9, 2025

I have a 2017 Q7 with the "front right side marker light defective" warning THAT POP OUT ONLY WHEN THE LIGHT AUTOMATICALLY TURN ON but the lights are actually functional. Yet the local Audi still wants to charge me 5.3k to fix it. The warning only happens at night. I've asked the shop for clarification on how it was deemed inop. since it looks like it's working to me. I see a lot of posts in forums about this issue. I see that there was a limited recall for this issue with 2017 Audi Q7 vehicles, but it's VIN specific and my VIN isn't included.

Dec 2, 2025

Notifications come on indicating that “Front Left side marker light defective.” Identical error message for the right side marker.

Nov 15, 2025

Started receiving error message intermittently regarding front right marker light being defective on the dashboard even though the lights are working. From a brief search online, this appears to be an known issue for this make and year as many others are facing a similar issue. There has been a limited recall for only certain VINs for a similar issue. The recall should be expanded as it's impact is much broader. It is an expensive fix especially for something that is working.

The contact owns a 2017 Audi Q7. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver's side marker warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic with a failing driver's side marker. The contact was informed that the driver's side marker needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that while driving at night, the failure was a safety issue. In addition, the contact stated that the dinging from the sensor was a distraction. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V642000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

The "right side marker light" error message comes on when headlights are on, but the marker light is operating fine. I understand that this is part of a recall on other Audi Q7 models, but my 2017 does not appear to be within that recall. I request that the recall be expanded to include my auto. It appears from online information that other owners outside of the recall are having the issue that the recall is aimed at. Thank you for your consideration. Front right side marker light is showing defective on 2017 Audi Q7. Light appears to be on but is still throwing error message. Safety issue as I have no visibility when driving to determine whether or not the light is properly working - anything regarding light faults should be considered a safety issue. Problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by an independent service center, but a quick online search will show this is a known issue and an astronomical cost associated with replacing the entire light assembly.

Jun 19, 2025

A warning light is showing on the dash about the right side light not working. On inspection all lights are illuminated. Reportedly there has been a recall on some VIN’s for this problem but not ours. On line discussion groups report that the problem is more wide-spread in this model than with the limited VIN’s covered. Since the cost of a dealer replacing the lighting assembly is around $5000, we would like to have our vehicle covered as well.

Side marker light not working and throwing a dash light.

Jun 2, 2025

I drive a 2017 Audi Q7 and recently I got a warning light and message on my dash telling me my front right marker was defective and to check my owners manual and contact Audi but when I reached out to Audi they said my car was not one of the cars affect by the recall but I know a lot of people who are not under the recall status who also have had this issue and it is very expensive to fix even if nothing is wrong. My light appears to be working but my service center I take my car too told me to reach out to NHTSA to let it be known that others aside from those under the recall status are having the same issue and we are having to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. Audi recall campaign 97CB (NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000).

May 19, 2025

Side markers lights are failing at an abnormally high rate. The pop up error and chime is incredibly distracting as it pops up every 20 to 30 seconds blocking most of the information on the instrument cluster. The side marker lights still function even when the error pops up. Audi will only replace the entire headlight housing to fix the problem, but that seems extreme to fix what appears to be a software issue, as the side marker lights still is fully functioning.

The contact owns a 2017 Audi Q7. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Side Marker light Fault Detected" was displayed. The contact stated that after a visual inspection, the contact became aware that both side marker lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the side marker light assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V642000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting); but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.

CAMPAIGN 97cb (nhtsa campaign ID 16v642000 Side Marker Lights Do Not Illuminate With Parking Lights Or Headlights On This poses a risk for my safety and others during night driving making the vehicle less visible at night. I paid Audi of Portland $285.00 to diagnose this issue, due to receiving the message on my car "front left" or "front right" "side marker light defective" and they said it would cost almost $12,000.00 to replace both left and right-side headlight housing. Marker lights are LED and cannot be replaced without replacing entire housing. I checked for a recall and my 2017 Audi Q7 does not have any open recalls. However other models made the same year are being recalled. the side marker lights do not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Error front left side marker light defective error message but no issue with the actual marker light. To be clear the marker light is operating perfectly as noted by my dealer. It is a known system error code malfunction and exact issue for my vehicle year and make - recall code 97cb. I contacted Audi and they claim my VIN was not impacted by the production line issue but obviously that is not true. Audi is not standing by their product and dealer charge is $6,889 to replace left headlight. This issue closely resembles Audi recall campaign 97cb (NHTSA campaign id 16v642000), with details available at [xxx] . In my case, the marker light itself is functioning properly, but the vehicle is displaying a false error message: "front right side marker light defective. " this poses safety risks because the erroneous warning distracts drivers from the road and could lead to the system failing to alert the driver of an actual side marker light issue in the future. Many owners of the same model and year are disabling their side marker lights entirely to avoid the error, as evidenced in discussions such as those on [xxx] . Repairing this issue typically requires replacing the entire headlight assembly, with costs ranging from $2,400 to $5,300, making it prohibitively expensive for many. Although Audi initiated a recall (97cb) for a similar issue, it was limited to a specific subset of vehicles, and the widespread nature of this problem in other vehicles outside the recall’s VIN range suggests a broader defect. Given these safety risks, high repair costs, and the frequency of the issue, I urge the NHTSA to investigate whether this problem warrants a broader recall or corrective actions by the manufacturer. Front side marker error

Mar 6, 2025

Front left and right marker lights show up as defective on the dashboard, intermittently, but the lights are working. Have seen on different forums that this is not uncommon with this vehicle. Many complaints. Tried working with Audi/USA and have followed their advice with needing a dealership assessments. I have done this on two occasions, but they said that they will not be responsible, but that the dealership will offer a labor discount of 10%. These quotes are over $7000 to replace the lights and modules (that are working), if you don’t want to keep listening to the dinging warning bells. And it forces the customer to fix it because you will never be able to sell the car even though the lights are working. Think at least Audi should pay for the parts on all complaints. There is such a term as “good will” and they should broaden the recall on this item. My vehicle had a recall on this that the dealership repaired before I even purchased the vehicle which was NEW. Audi informed them when it was on the lot, but they say it was for the same thing but they just had to do an update on it? How did they know that when the car only had maybe 10 miles on it when we took delivery. Hopefully, someone in your department has some clout and back Audi up against the wall and take responsibility. My car giving me a "Front right side marker light defective" fault on the cluster. I searched and there is a recall for that issue. Safety Recall Code: 97CB. I called dealer about it and they are saying that there is no Recall for my VIN number. So they want to charge me for fixing that issue. I search it and it's common problem for 2017 Q7. And also it says there is a software issue on the recall notice. So the problem is not my fault and I need you to add my VIN Number to that Recall Notice.

The vehicle is giving an error message that states " "front left side marker light defective". Not having marker lights that make me visible to others on the road reduces my safety. The problem is apparently a known issue by Audi and several consumers are impacted by this error. It appears that this issue is happening to MANY more owners outside of the VIN numbers that qualify for the recall

There is an issue with this vehicle that seems to have been addressed by Audi recall campaign 97CB (NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000), however it does not apply to all affected vehicles. I bought the car used in 2020 with approx 35k miles on it. At about 55k miles, I began getting a warning on the dash that says “front (left/right) side marker light defective. see owners manual.” It began with the left light only. I had the car inspected at an independent repair shop and there were no issues with the light. They thought maybe there was a wiring or sensor issue and suggested I check with Audi for any open recalls. I called the Audi dealer and explained the issue, they said there were no recalls and suggested replacing the headlight assembly for about $4k. I refused, and dealt with the warning. At about 75k miles, the right side has started coming on as well. I had it checked with the repair shop, and confirmed the light is working. My research has shown many others experience this issue, and Audi is aware of it, but the recall only covered a small number of VIN’s. The others have opted to get a re-programming device (OBD-11) and disable the marker lights altogether. This will result in the side marker lights not being lit, meaning the car is less safe than intended. Please see if something can be done to add all affected vehicles to the Audi recall so I can have this issue repaired and not compromise the safety of the vehicle. Thank you.

2017 Audi Q7 , issue is Left marker light not working according to the dash computer, called Audi , inspected and they said it works but is dimmer than the other side, so needs replaced. $6000.... not doing that, called Audi customer service and they would do a good will for less but still $4000.. I chose to just put up with it since it works and the dash light stays on all the time. Then months go by and now the Right marker light not working, same thing. works but the computer says it doesnt. This is a issue with Audi and needs to be a recall. The warning light states left light out, then flashes and says the right light is out. BOTH lights work, but computer says it doesnt.. the dash light and the dinging noise needs to be a recall.

There is an existing recall for certain Audi Q7 front side marker lights (Audi recall campaign 97CB, NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) but this recall is too narrow. It does not include my vehicle but I have the same problem. Many other Q7 owners do as well. The Audi dealership will not honor repair or replacement, not even under warranty. My 2017 Audi Q7 is reporting a "front right side marker light defective" message. This happened after the car was brought into the dealer. The light is functional according to the dealer and visual inspection but I was told this is a nuisance error message. The dealer said even though it is working fine, I can pay $4,000 to have the light replaced to make the message go away. Or the other option is to just live with it, which means when it does go out I won't know that it has failed. This seems like a defective part that should be recalled.

Aug 20, 2024

Received “left front side marker deficient” warning. Warning appears when lights are turned on. Have been made aware that this issue may have been addressed for some, but not all, 2017 Q7s in a previous recall. This is a safety issue as the car could be less visible at night. Audi charging several thousand dollars for a new headlight assembly; should fix problem for free as it is a well known issue for this year of Q7 at this point.

The "front right-side marker light is defective" message illuminated in my dash February 2024 when my car is in the garage or gets dark. It does not impact the functions of the car and there is an amber reflector beneath it. According to Federal Law, these are necessary to be visible to others, and without these my car will not pass inspection. However, due to the engineering of the vehicle it requires $5000 to fix. It requires replacing the entire headlight assembly, which is a poor design for the consumer but benefit to the manufacturer. The left front marker light is not working and a warning shows up on the dashboard. It's a safety issue as the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash. I took my vehicle to an Audi dealership. The person helping me knew immediately what the issue was as he has seen it many times. When I looked up the issue online, I saw many other Audi owners (not only Q7 either) have the same issue of a side maker light not illuminating. I also saw that there was a recall for side marker lights, however, it seems my VIN was not included in the recall. Audi should be responsible for fixing this known issue that occurs in many of its cars. The dealership told me it would be $5K-$6K to replace the small light bulb! Truly outrageous!

Received the following warning: “front left side marker defective” yet light is still functioning. I was told there is a short in the sensor, and In order to get rid of this warning, I would be forced to replace the entire headlamp at a cost of more than $5600. Other VINs from this model have been issued a recall for this very problem, yet my VIN was not included. From my understanding, all that is needed would be a software update. Please include all q7 Audi models in this recall, as this is obviously a more widespread issue after reading the other complaints.

Checking online reveals that several other Audi owners with an AUDI Q7 2017 model have experienced this exact same issue. When the issue happens under warranty the headlight in question is replaced for around $4,000. If not under warranty it is an out of pocket expense - a very high cost. According to sources online this exact issue is covered by Audi Recall campaign 97CB (NHTSA ID : 16V642000) but only for some VIN numbers and not for many others experiencing the same issue.

Side marker light defective message appears erroneously. Side marker light is intact and functional. Error message is a distraction and will fail to accurately notify of real issues with side marker light.

I got a malfunction alert on my dash that states " Right Side Marker Light Defective - See Owners Manual". Apparently, there is an existing recall 97CB for this item but my VIN is not listed as part of this recall. I have read several complaints that more and more Audi Q7 vehicles are being affected by this malfunction. I would like to see if my VIN can be included on the 97CB recall? Since this problem seems to be shared among tens of thousands of vehicle owners and those affected are growing in numbers. Please advise on this issue since it is a safety related matter and the repair cost from Audi are very expensive. AUDI 2017 Q7 PREMIUM PLUS: July 25, 2023 - Got a notification "Front right side marker light defective." The car had just passed the 50k manufacturer's warranty. The current mileage at the time was 51,426. Contacted dealership for assistance and they informed there was a recall on this issue but unfortunately my VIN did not qualify for it, also that the vehicle was no longer under the manufacturer's warranty. I then emailed Audi customer support explaining my concern and how I felt this was a safety issue that should be the manufacture's responsibility to repair. I received a call back from them and pretty much what they said was, "we apologize for the inconvenience but unfortunately your VIN does not apply to the recall and the vehicle is no longer under warranty." I got the same response as the dealership. I've taken my car to two different shops and the cost varies from 5k-6k. This is insane for a car that was barely over 50k miles. I've never experienced any other problems with my car in the 4 years I've owned it. This was the very first time. I maintain my car very well and it is always up to date with the maintenance services. This is a safety issue that can affect my safety and others as the purpose of these lights are to inform other drivers about my vehicle when observed from the side. Especially at night. After several attempts with the dealership and no luck I gave up. I found a European Auto Shop to look into this and they are now working with my extended warranty in hopes they can get this fixed for the safety of others and myself. I strongly feel Audi should have made this recall apply to all their 2017 vehicles experiencing this problem. Thank you.

A repeating fault saying "Front right side marker light defective. See owner's manual" keeps popping up in the primary display with an accompanying bell sounding. The Long Beach Audi dealership said all lights were working correctly and failed to fully diagnose the problem in the five days the car was in their shop. This repeating nuisance fault is annoying and distracting to the point of being a safety hazard and should be fixed by Audi.

The right side mark light failed. There was a recall for this problem (Audi Recall Campaign 97CB, NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) but it did not include my car. It seems many Audi owners have this issue.

Front Left Side Marker Light Defective. This is a known issue with Audi's vehicles. There was a recall for some vehicles but apparently not the Audi Q7. The lack of these lights put the driver and those around them at risk due to limited visibility. People are choosing to completely DISABLE the light rather than pay the exorbitant fees to ensure a simple bulb is working. The vehicle intermittently but repeatedly reports a "Front Side Marker Light Defective" error despite there being no visible issue with any of the front lights. Sometimes the error will not appear for days, while other times it repeatedly comes on and turns off, each time making a loud chime and displaying the warning message, again despite no change in the lighting. The quoted rate to repair this issue is around $5,000, which is an enormous amount to fix an issue that is not actually affecting the lighting in any way. The error itself is very distracting, but the only reasonable workarounds seem to be ways to disable those lights entirely, which would create its own safety issues.

I’m getting the "front right" "side marker light defective" message and my vehicle’s lamps are appearing normal. Car has never been in an accident and multiple owners are having this issue

Right side marker defective keeps coming on when headlight turns on. The light works fine but Audi wants to charge over 4K to replace headlamp. Audi stated it’s tiny bulb on side to fix, I have to replace entire headlamp. This is an electrical issue that lot of Audi Q7 owners have reported and I shouldn’t be liable to fix a defective issue.

Feb 28, 2024

Repeated & Distracting dashboard warning for "Front Left Side Marker Light Defective." Instead of merely replacing a bulb, Audi requires a $2500+ headlight housing to be replaced. Problem confirmed by both independent shop and Audi dealership. Many Audi owners have found ways to deactive the side lights, dimishing safety, or they have to endure the distraction of an alert on the dash EVERY 20 SECONDS. This issue needs to be added to the existing Audi recall 97CD or NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000

Feb 27, 2024

Right side marker light is getting repeated warnings despite headlight working fine. Repair options are either over $4K or disabling the marker light which is much less expensive but reduces safety. I and many others will be opting to disable the light, reducing safety. Audi should issue a recall for this defective marker light that includes additional VINs.

Feb 24, 2024

I am receiving dashboard warning error "Front right side marker light defective" when headlights are in use. The warning occurs when headlights are on and intermittently illuminates with a beep warning sound. It can happen every few seconds or every few minutes. It is very annoying. This problem started when the car was around 82,000 miles. The same thing happened on the OTHER side of the car around 72,000 miles, with the "Front LEFT side marker light defective" warning appearing. At that time the car was still under extended warranty (which expired at 80,000 miles) and the Audi dealer diagnosed the LEFT side problem as a "defective headlight assembly." The dealer replaced the headlight assembly at a cost of $3655 which was covered by the extended warranty. Now, with the extended warranty elapsed, the problem is happening on the RIGHT side. Online research shows very high numbers of 2017 Audi Q7 owners complaining about this issue. Audi recall 97CB (NHTSA 16V642000) exists for this issue but Audi only applied it to some 2017 model year VINs. My 2017 Q7 VIN is not included. It should be. Clearly this issue is rampant in this model+year combination, and owners should not have to spend thousands of dollars for it to be repaired.

Headlight side marker bulb out. A malfunctioning side marker light not only compromises the visibility of your vehicle to other drivers, especially in low-light conditions, but also heightens the risk of accidents, particularly during lane changes or turns.

I never received an recall for this issue below and my vehicle is having this problem. My safety is being put at risk due to this. Please help. I'm requesting this recall to reimburse for costs of repair which is $5100.00. Recall no. 16V642000 Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2016 TT roadster, A3 cabriolet, A3 sedan and A3 e-tron, 2016-2017 TT coupe, 2017 A4 sedan and Q7 and 2015-2017 Q3 vehicles. The affected vehicles may have been programmed with new software that inadvertently makes the side marker lights inoperative in conjunction with the parking lights or the headlights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." Recall consequence If the side marker lights do not illuminate, the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash. Recall action Audi will notify owners, and dealers will upload revised software to correct the issue, free of charge. This recall began November 2016. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97CB.

I purchased a used 2017 Audi Q7 Premium on 11/16/2023 from a Volkswagen. Since it showed the message "Brake pads: wear limit reached. You can continue driving. Please contact Service", the agreed to repair it. I didn't receive my vehicle until 2 weeks later. They said that the work was done but after driving it for a couple of days the message is still showing. After driving it off the lot, minutes later I get a message "Front left side marker light defective. See owner's manual". After examining the side markers it doesn't look the neither side is out and there is no way showing on how to clear the message. I haven't taken it to an Audi dealership as of yet. But worried on if I made the right purchase.

When driving into a dimly lit area the car rings and displays the message front left side marker defective. The warning stays on for some time and then goes away before returning again. This continued for a few weeks. The car then experienced a full electrical system malfunction, doors unlocking and locking randomly while driving before dinging repeatedly with multiple warnings displayed in the dash and then stalled in the middle of the road. The vehicle would not shift into park. Multiple warnings continued to ding and flash in the dash. After being turned off for 20 minutes the car was able to be started shifted into Drive and driven with no warnings displayed. The car was taken to the dealership for diagnostics which were performed, but with no electrical system malfunction displayed. The left side marker warning was still on, but the dealer said there was no fix for this. The following month the car was taken for 60,000 mile service. At this time the dealer advised the fix for left side market was replacing the entire headlamp fixture. The service was declined. When the vehicle left the dealer the cruise control was on and would not turn off. After turning off the car and turning it back on the cruise control was off. After driving a short distance the speed control warning dinged and displayed and the cruise control was back on. The orange engine light was also displayed although there was no written warning for this.

Jan 3, 2023

The headlights in the vehicle are malfunctioning. The daytime running lights are dimming and failing. The vehicle was inspected by the dealership and they state that both headlights need to be replaced at a cost to me of $8,500, and they further claim that the issues indicates the entire headlight assembly is failing and has to be replaced. After looking at this issue online, it appears to be an extensive issue with Audi of failing LED headlights. Audi has issued recalls for some models over the same issue, but not all, and the 2017 Q7 is not part of the headlight recall. It seems clear to me that LED headlights should not fail after a few years of routine use, and it is concerning that the failure of the headlights will get worse and will likely impact the safety of the vehicle. Further, it is concerning that Audi is not willing to remedy what is a product defect in a vital car component.

This issue appears to fall under recall 97CB for a Side Marker Light Violation on select Audi vehicles. I own a 2017 Audi Q7 and have been receiving an error that the "front right side marker light is defective". Audi service has stated that the issue is with an individual LED diode so the entire headlight unit must be replaced to the tune of $4,400.00. Since my VIN is not included in recall 97CB, they will not replace it. My vehicle was purchased as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle and had approximately 63,000 miles when the defect occurred. I am respectfully requesting to expand the pool of VIN numbers included in this recall as it appears to not be localized to the VINs previously identified.

I will like to drive a safe car without having to pay for something that it’s actually a defect. We yo too much for this cars and for them to be not held responsible. I don’t feel safe driving my car but I can’t afford $9,500 in repairs. We can’t even fix it ourselves if we wanted to because it’s not repairable it needs a new unit. I would like my vin to be included in this safety recall.

The front marker LED light bulbs in the headlight housing is gradually turning yellow. The LED light bulbs can't be replaced. They were originally white and now they are turning yellow. It is my understanding that only the side markers should be yellow. The front markers being yellow may be mistaken for the side markers and there distorting the width of the vehicle.

WARNING LIGHT CONSISTENTLY COMES ON: RIGHT FRONT SIDE MARKER LIGHT INOPERATIVE.

Jan 26, 2022

I have been receiving a marker light warning for both the left and the right marker lights. These warnings are intermittent but fairly persistent. The marker lights appear to be operating correctly. After a review of online forums this issue appears to epidemic in the 2017 Audi Q7. Audi has indicated the only way to fix the problem is a complete headlight replacement running between $4,000 to $6,000 per headlight depending on dealer. The failure of these sensors to read properly is a significant safety issue and should be the subject of a recall.

Front right side marker light defective. This recall shows up for Audi Q7, 2017, however, when I run my VIN it does not come up as an affected vehicle. This is a safety issue, when the light does not illuminate the vehicle is less visible at night and increases risk of crash. My vehicle is: 2017 Audi Q7.

May 25, 2021

Issue appears to be similar to existing recall 97CB exterior side marker lights to which my year, make, and model is included, but by specific vehicle /VIN is not. Warning lamps are present. In a situation where the parking lights are switched on and the vehicle is locked, the side marker lights do not illuminate, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.") . This could reduce vehicle visibility, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
