The passenger seat occupancy sensor (OC3 mat) on my 2006 BMW 3 Series (VIN: [XXX] ) has failed. As a result, the front passenger airbag is disabled, which poses a serious safety risk. BMW issued a 15-year warranty extension for this issue, acknowledging it as a common failure, but my vehicle is now slightly outside the coverage period. This part is vital for detecting front-seat occupants and enabling the airbag during a crash. I believe BMW should still be required to fix this safety-critical defect, especially in vehicles where the issue was never repaired while under the extended coverage window. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V513000 (Air Bags); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The dealer offered an inspection but declined to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

There is a recall 17v-428 for the seat mat, and i went to my local BMW dealer and said this car was not on the list, but they acknowledge it’s the same issue but because this VIN was not included they can’t fix it at no charge . They want $2100 to repair. Can you help me ? Thanks

Put a box of moderate weight into the passenger seat (hard drives) - probably 40 lbs. After driving for a few minutes and over a few bumps, the seat belt warning light came on because the seat sensor was tripped by the weight. Put the seat belt on to silence the warning. Shortly thereafter, both the seatbelt and passenger airbag warning lights showed on the dash, regardless of occupancy. Hooked up to scanning tool and cleared the codes but they always return. This is not a rare event from reading the online forums - it is likely due to the sensor mat in the seat for occupancy being defective, or a combination of that and the seat belt pre-tensioner being defective, for the passenger side only. The vehicle operates normally other than the warning lights. Obviously have not tested the airbag, but that is highly unlikely to be the actual problem from my investigation of the symptoms.

CONSEQUENCE: Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.

The passenger seat mat sensor stopped working and that disabled the airbag. I called BMW and they told me this part has already been replaced once in 2016 on my car during a recall, which happened before I purchased the car. I asked them to replace it again since this is a safety issue and they told me BMW would only replace this part for cars with less than 15 years, which in my case expired on January 2021. This is a very costly repair and in my view is caused by a poorly designed part, considering that there has already been 3 recalls on it and it keeps breaking after a some use. So for now, until this case is settled, I will be driving a car with the passenger airbag deactivated by the board computer, what is a very serious safety issue.

I BELIEVE THE SEAT SENSOR IN MY 2006 BMW 325I FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS FAULTY. THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME, THE LIGHT COMES ON THAT SHOWS THAT MY FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG IS NOT ON AND ALSO THAT THE PASSENGER IS NOT BUCKLED, WHETHER THEY ARE BUCKLED, OR THERE ISN'T A PASSENGER IN THAT SEAT AT ALL. WHETHER I AM STATIONARY OR DRIVING/MOVING AT ANY SPEED, THOSE WARNING LIGHTS ARE ON, AND WILL INTERMITTENTLY GO OFF FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME, THEN THEY COME BACK ON AGAIN. I AM IN A CARPOOL SO I FREQUENTLY AM THE DRIVER AND I HAVE SOMEONE IN THAT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF IN AN ACCIDENT, THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY CAUSING INJURIES IN THE CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. NEWER MODELS OF THE SAME CAR HAVE THIS SEAT SENSOR ON RECALL, SO THE 2006 SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED.

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000.

I WAS TOLD I WAS PUT ON A "LIST" AND THAT I WOULD BE CALLED ONCE THE PARTS CAME IT. THE SECOND TIME I CALLED, THEY DIDN'T KNOW OF ANY "LIST" AND TOOK MY NAME DOWN AGAIN. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO BE SERVICED FOR THE RECALL HOWEVER, THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY HAD THE WRONG PART AVAILABLE AND WOULD NOTIFY HIM WHEN THE CORRECT PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT LAST REACHED OUT TO THE DEALER AT 818-246-5600 TWO MONTHS AGO WHEN THEY INFORMED HIM THAT PARTS WERE NOT MADE AVAILABLE AND THAT THEY WOULD CALL HIM. I TOOK MY BMW FOR AN AIRBAG RECALL TO CLASSIC BMW ON 6800 NORTH DALLAS PKWY, PLANO, RX. THEY DID NOT DISCUSS ANY CHARGES AND SUPPOSEDLY THEY CHANGED MY AIRBAG ON THE DRIVER SIDE FOR FREE. THIS WAS COMPLETED ON JUNE,5 ,2017. ON JUNE,13, 2017 MY AIRBAG SIGN STARTED COMING UP. HAS NEVER HAD ISSUES WITH MY CAR IN THE PAST REGARDING AIR BAG SIGN. NOW CLASSIC BMW WANTS ME TO PAY 180 DOLLARS JUST TO DIAGNOSE SOMETHING THEY WORKED ON. NOW THEY ARE GIVING ME ON THE TEXT MESSAGE A LAUNDRY LIST OF ITEMS RELATED TO AIR BAG. WHATEVER HAS HAPPENED IS WHAT THEY HAVE DAMAGED. I TRIED TO WORK IT WITH THEM AND TALK AND EXPLAIN. IT SEEMS THEY DON'T WANT TO DISCUSS IT AT ALL. MY CAR WAS WORKING VERY CLEAN AND PROPERLY.

THE CONTACT INFORMED THE DEALER THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT A DIAGNOSTIC FEE HAD TO BE PAID BEFORE THE VEHICLE COULD BE SERVICED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

I CALLED THE BMW SAHARA LAS VEGAS DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE AND TO CHECK BACK IN 3 MONTHS. I THEN CALLED BMQ HQ WHO TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD CHECK BACK IN 6 MONTHS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND, HOW COULD THE "FINAL REMEDY BE AVAILABLE" IF IT'S NOT AVAILABLE FOR 6 MONTHS OR LONGER?

MY CAR IS OPTIONED WITH POWER, SPORT SEATS AND CURRENTLY HAS 126,969 MILES. FOR OVER THE LAST 2K MILES THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS COME ON AND STAYED ON WHILE DRIVING. THIS INDICATES TO ME THAT MY AIRBAGS WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THERE ARE OPEN RECALLS FOR THIS MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR OF BMW YET INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, MY CAR AND MANY OTHERS THAT EXHIBIT THIS SIMILAR ISSUE REMAIN EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW AND THEY SAY I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. MY CAR WAS NEVER IN A CRASH AND THE AIRBAGS HAVE NEVER BEEN DEPLOYED. THERE ARE MANY POINTS OF FAILURE IN ANY CAR ALONG WITH BMWS THAT I EXPECT AND HAVE NO PROBLEM PAYING FOR. SAFETY ISSUES RELATING TO FAULTY AIRBAGS, MODULES, OR THEIR WIRING IS ONE THAT BMW SHOULD ALWAYS COVER. DESPITE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NATSA) RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V-384 AND PE14-016 REGARDING A DANGEROUS AIRBAG FRONTAL ISSUE ON BMW/3 SERIES/2006, I WAS REFUSED TO HAVE THIS DANGEROUS SAFETY ITEM PARTS FIXED/REPLACED BY BMW OF SAN ANTONIO WITH A REASON 'ISSUE IS CAUSED BY A HUMID/MOISTURE CONDITION'. THIS RECALL NHTSA ENGINEERING'S ANALYSIS, EA08-001 CONCLUDED A DEFECT, AND YET, I WAS GIVEN A RESPONSE THAT A MOISTURIZE CONDITION HAD AFFECTED IT AND HENCE, BMW OF SAN ANTONIO WOULD NOT GET REIMBURSED BY BMW SO THEY WILL NOT SERVICE THIS SAFETY ISSUE.

BMW CLAIMS THAT MY VEHICLE HAD A LIMITED WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR 10 YEARS FROM BUILD DATE, BUT I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY SUCH NOTIFICATION ALTHOUGH I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND ALSO LIVED AT THE SAME ADDRESS. BMW WILL NOT APPROVE A WARRANTY REPAIR AS THEY SAID THE 10 YEAR PERIOD EXPIRED IN 2015. THE FAILURE OF THIS SENSOR COULD CAUSE THE AIR BAGS TO NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A FRONT END CRASH.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2006 BMW 325I WITH THE INTENTIONS OF LETTING MY DAUGHTER DRIVE IT, DUE TO THE HIGH SAFETY RATINGS OF THESE AUTOMOBILES. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT SOME ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION, AND SOME WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE SEATBELTS AND AIRBAGS. WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT THE WARNING LIGHTS, THE SERVICE WRITER OF THE DEALERSHIP IN MERIDIAN MS TOLD ME THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SEAT MAT WAS FAULTY. LATER I GOOGLED INFO ABOUT THE SEAT MAT, AND I CAME ACROSS A LINK THAT SHOWS MY SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS CAR. I CALLED NHTSC AND LEFT A MESSAGE ABOUT MY INQUIRY, AND I WAS CALLED BACK PROMPTLY BY MR. NATE HAYES. AFTER I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO MR. HAYES, HE DID SOME CHECKING AND FOUND THAT ALTHOUGH SOME 2006 325I'S WEREN'T RECALLED (THE ONES WITH MANUAL SEATS) MINE HOWEVER SHOULD'VE BEEN RECALLED DUE TO HAVING THE ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTED SPORTS SEATS. MR. HAYES INSTRUCTED ME TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF MAYBE THIS WORK HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE ON MY VEHICLE. UPON CALLING THE DEALERSHIP BACK, I WAS TOLD THAT IT HADN'T BEEN DONE, BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WASN'T IN THE RECALL. AFTER QUESTIONING HIM MORE ABOUT IT, HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS ABLE TO FIND THAT BMW HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON MY CAR TO 15 YEARS WITH NO MILEAGE LIMITATIONS, IF THAT IS WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR, BUT IF NOT, I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR THE REPAIR. WHAT CONCERNS ME ABOUT THIS, IS THE FACT THAT BMW WAS MANDATED BY THE NHTSC TO RECALL A CERTAIN LIST OF AUTOMOBILES TO PREVENT INJURY, RATHER THAN WAIT TO SEE IF PROBLEMS OCCUR LATER THAT COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND/OR DEATH. I DON'T KNOW IF OTHERS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED WERE PUT OFF BY BMW OR NOT, BUT THIS COULD HAVE SOME DEADLY CONSEQUENCES.

ON MAY 12, 2014, AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY, I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK, SO THAT I CAN OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR, TO GET INSIDE OF MY GARAGE. AS I PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND PROCEEDED TO PUT THE VEHICLE INTO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY, AT A HIGH RATE OF ACCELERATION. I INSTINCTIVELY APPLIED THE BRAKES, HOWEVER, THIS SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, SAFETY DEFECT, CAUSED ME TO CRASH INTO THE BACKSIDE WALL OF MY GARAGE, THUS CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. I CURRENTLY OWN A 06 BMW 325I 4DR AND HAVE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A FRONT PASSENGER SEAT DETECTION MAT MALFUNCTION. WHEN AN ADULT IS SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OF THE VEHICLE, THE AIR BAG SERVICE INDICATOR, NO SEATBELT INDICATOR, AND "PASSENGER AIRBAG IS DISABLED" INDICATOR ARE ALL ILLUMINATED. WHEN TAKING MY VEHICLE IN TO THE LOCAL BMW SERVICE CENTER TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE, I WAS TOLD THE CAUSE WAS A FAULTY PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT (HAVE DOCUMENTATION), WHICH IS MEANT TO DETECT WHEN A PASSENGER IS PRESENT. IN ADDITION, I WAS TOLD IN MY VEHICLES CURRENT STATE, IF I WERE TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT WITH A PASSENGER PRESENT, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY. WHILE PERFORMING INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT BMW HAS RELEASED AN OFFICIAL RECALL (#08V384000) WHICH DESCRIBES THESE SAME SYMPTOMS, CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT. IN THE RECALL DETAILS, THE MAKE, MODEL, YEAR AND SEAT TYPE ALL MATCH THE SPECIFICATIONS OF MY VEHICLE. AFTER DISCOVERING THE RECALL INFORMATION, I CONTACTED BMW OF NORTH AMERICA REPRESENTATIVE BY TELEPHONE. I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE MY VEHICLE VIN IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST, THE REPAIR MUST BE DONE AT AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. THE CONTACT FOUND RECALL CAMPAIGN 08V384000 FOR THE FRONTAL AIR BAG WHICH DEALS WITH THE FLOOR MAT SENSOR. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED AND THEY WOULD HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60000.

I CURRENTLY OWN A 2006 325I BMW. THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH A OCCUPANCY SENSOR MAT. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM WOULD COST $1000 TO BE FIXED. I LATER LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND OUT EARLIER MODELS OF THE SAME VEHICLE WERE RECALLED. THE BMW DEALERSHIP STILL WILL NOT FIX MY CAR BECAUSE IT'S NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. I ASKED IF MY AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IF THE CAR IS WRECKED AND THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME "MAYBE". IT ALL STARTED ON A RANDOM DAY IN FEBRUARY 2009 WHEN THE AIRBAG AND SEATBELT LIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY CAME UP ON THE DASH OF THE CAR. IN APRIL 2009 I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO ATTEMPT TO GET IT FIXED. THE MECHANIC LISTED THE PROBLEM AS A PASSENGER FRONT AIRBAG SENSOR, OCCUPANCY DETECTION MAT, PROGRAMMING TO CONTROL UNITS, DIAGNOSTIC AND LABOR AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ACCORDING TO THE VIN NUMBER. AFTERWARD RECEIVING THE CAR BACK, THE LIGHTS REMAINED OFF FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND THEN IMMEDIATELY CAME BACK ON. TODAY, I CHECKED THE NHTSA WEBSITE REGARDING RECALLS AND UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V384000, THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED IN MANY 2006 BMW 3 SERIES CARS INCLUDING MINE. I JUST RECENTLY CALLED THE TOLL-FREE BMW NUMBER TO CHECK TO SEE IF MY VIN WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL LIST BUT THEY ADVISED THAT IT WAS NOT. REASON BEING: ON ANY GIVEN PRODUCTION DAY IN THE FACTORY, THEY MAY MAKE 100 CARS. HOWEVER, 30 OF THE CARS MAY USE A BOX OF PARTS THAT THE OTHER 70 DID NOT USE. THEY ADVISED ME TO GET A SECOND OPINION AT ANOTHER BMW DEALERSHIP AND ATTEMPT TO GET IT FIXED. THEN, IF THE MECHANIC FEELS LIKE IT MAY BE THE SAME ISSUE, THAT I SHOULD CONTACT BMW'S MAIN OFFICE FOR A CASE MANAGER. BASED ON THE RESULTS THAT THE FIRST MECHANIC STATED AS AN ISSUE AND THAT THEY ARE INDEED THE SAME ISSUE, IT SEEMS THAT THERE WAS VIN NUMBERS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL LIST THAT BMW DID NOT INCLUDE. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE REAR LOWER BELT RELEASE MODULE (PART # 72116975363) HAD BEEN MADE NON-OPERATIONAL DUE TO A LIQUID SPILL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE REAR SEAT. THIS CAUSED THE ENTIRE AIRBAG SYSTEM AND SEAT BELT SYSTEM TO FAIL. THIS ALSO SHORT CIRCUITED THE CABLE (PART #61129130173) BMW STATES THAT THESE PARTS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO " OUTSIDE INFLUENCES".
