The contact owns a 2006 BMW 530i. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V273000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The contact stated that air bag and seat belt warning lights were illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that air bag and seat belt needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage 100,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The contact owns a 2006 BMW 530i. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the passenger’s side air bag warning light illuminated, and remained illuminated. Additionally, the check engine and brake warning lights also illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer to be diagnosed. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.

Approximately two months ago (March 2021) the instrument panel airbag and seat belt warning lights had begun to remain on. The BMW dealer determined it was a faulty front passenger air bag occupancy sensor mat which was then replaced and repaired at the owner's expense. This defect was specifically covered in a Service Information bulletin SB-10056703-9690, dated September 2014, which superseded SI B01 09 14, dated August 2014, which extended BMW's limited warranty to 15 years, without mileage limitation, if the warning light came on within the extended 15 year period. Unfortunately, BMW corporate determined this defect was not within the 15 year period based on the vehicle's in-service date. Said BMW is an original owner vehicle with less than 45,000 miles or driven an average of 3,000 miles per year.

I'VE BEEN TOLD BY TWO EUROPEAN CAR REPAIR COMPANIES THAT 2006 BMWS ARE FREQUENTLY NEEDING THE AIRBAG CONTROL MODULAR REPLACED. THERE IS AN INTERNAL ERROR ON THE AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT- CODE 93D7. THIS PART HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED, AND BECAUSE OF THE EXORBITANT PRICE, I WAS TOLD THAT MANY DRIVERS CHOOSE TO DISCONNECT THE AIRBAGS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING! IS BMW REPORTING THIS ISSUE? I CALLED THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY SEEMED COMPLETELY UNINTERESTED AND/OR UNWILLING TO DOCUMENT MY COMPLAINT. MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME THE WARNING WAS DISPLAYED.

I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A DEFAULT IN THE MAT SENSOR AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $781.72. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE FOR MY MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS BMW NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE. I WAS TOLD BY BOTH THAT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL SO THE REPAIR IS ON ME. I ALSO SEE THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. CLEARLY THERE IS A PROBLEM THAT BMW NEEDS TO CORRECT.

I HAVE A 2006 BMW 530I (MAKE: 03/05). TWO DAYS BACK, WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK (HIGHWAY), SUDDENLY THE MESSAGE, "PASSENGER RESTRAINT MALFUNCTION" CAME UP AND WHEN I RESEARCHED ABOUT THIS, I FOUND THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE 2006 BMW 530I'S FOR THIS ISSUE (RECALL SUBJECT : FRONT SEAT OCCUPANT PROTECTION MAT, NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V564000) . BUT, WHEN I EMAILED BMW REGARDING THE ISSUE, THEY SAID MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL LIST. I AM NOT SURE WHY ALL THE CARS ARE NOT INCLUDED WHEN THEY ARE MADE IN SAME YEAR AND SAME MODEL. THEY TESTED WITH A "GOOD" BATTERY. DEALER NOW STATES SGM MODULE IS DEFECTIVE DUE TO CODE 93F9. IF THAT IS TRUE I BELIEVE THE SGM HAS BEEN DAMAGED DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH OC3 MAT AND BATTERY CABLE CAUSING FLUCTUATING VOLTAGE AND DAMAGE TO SGM, PROBABLY THE CAPACITOR THAT STORES ELECTRICITY. I PURCHASED A NEW BATTERY 10 DAYS LATER.DURING THE INTERVAL BETWEEN RESET AND NEW BATTERY THE LIGHTS DID NOT REAPPEAR. 9/2014 I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG FAULT LIGHTS APPEARED. SEAT WAS UNOCCUPIED AT THE TIME AND NO OBJECTS WERE ON THE SEAT. DEALER DIAGNOSED SAME AS ABOVE. AT TIME OF THIS INCIDENT BATTERY WAS 1.5 YEARS OLD. NO LIQUIDS HAVE EVER BEEN SPILLED ON SEAT. I AM CONCERNED WITH THIS ISSUE AS IT IS SAFETY RELATED. BMW TOOK CARE OF IT IN 2009, AND I RECALL THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATING THAT THE MAT WAS "PATCHED UP", NEVER REPLACED. BUT DID MENTION THAT IF I HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THIS SYSTEM, THAT I HAD A 10YEAR WARRANTY WITH NO LIMIT ON MILES AS IT IS A SAFETY RECALL. TODAY, I'VE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE YET AGAIN. SEEMS LIKE IT WAS A TEMPORARY FIX. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER, AND THEY STATED THAT BECAUSE MY VEHICLE HAS A SALVAGE TITLE, I HAVE NO WARRANTY. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY TRIED TO FIX THE ISSUE INITIALLY, THEN DECLINE THE PROMISED WARRANTY (WHICH I HAVE A LETTER FOR). ANY HELP TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. MY WIFE STARTED THE CAR UP AND THE AIRBAG AND SAFETY RESTRAINT LIGHTS NEVER TURNED OFF. MY 2006 BMW 530I HAS JUST EXPERIENCED A MALFUNCTION OF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG / SEATBELT SENSOR, AND I TOOK IT TO THE BMW OF STERLING SERVICE CENTER, WHICH CONFIRMED THAT THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT HAS FAILED. THIS IS EXACTLY THE CAUSE FOR THE AUGUST 5 2008 BMW RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V384000), AND ACCORDING TO THE RECALL DESCRIPTION, MY CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AT THAT TIME. HOWEVER, BMW OF STERLING TOLD ME THAT MY VIN DOES NOT SHOW UP IN THE RECALL DATABASE. I HOPE THIS IS NOT A SCAM THAT BMW OF STERLING (VIRGINIA) IS RUNNING, AS THEY ASKED FOR $1400 TO REPLACE THE SENSE, THAN AFTER ONE MORE DAYS THEY SAID THEY CONTACTED BMW WHICH AGREED TO PAY 50% OF THE BILL. I REFUSED THE OFFER, AS IT SEEMS LIKE A SCAM TO ME. HELLO NHTSA, RECALL REGARDING MY ISSUE HAS ALREADY BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED / INVESTIGATED WITH BOTH NHTSA AND BMW. TO SUMMARIZE THE ISSUE IS ABOUT A "PASSENGER RESTRAINT MALFUNCTION" SPECIFICALLY THE OC3 SEAT SENSOR MAT FAULTY UNIT, WHICH CONTROLS THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAGS. WHEN FAULTY, THE AIRBAGS ARE DEACTIVATED, WHICH RAISES A SAFETY CONCERN. I HAD CALLED BMW NA AND HAD MY VIN PULLED AND UNFORTUNATELY WAS NOT INCLUDED WITHIN THE RECALL CUT OFF DATE UP UNTIL 11/2005, MY PARTICULAR MODEL WAS MADE 12/2005. I REQUESTED BMW NA TO OPEN UP AN INVESTIGATION FOR RE-CONSIDERATION TO INCLUDE MY VEHICLE UNDER THERECALL LIST, CONSIDERING THE TIME FRAME OF CUTOFF DATE AND MY VEHICLE MANUFACTURED PRODUCTION DATE. I WAS TOLD THIS WOULD BE HANDLED INTERNALLY WHICH IS FINE, HOWEVER SENSE CONSIDERATION WILL NOT BE EXTENDED AND WANTED TO REACH OUT TO NHTSA. MY QUESTION TO BMW NA WAS, "WHAT WERE THE ENHANCEMENTS MADE TO MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE IN IMPROVING SAFETY, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE ANY DETAILS REGARDING THIS. I WENT TO GET INTO MY CAR YESTERDAY AND STARTED IT UP AND THEN I HAVE THIS PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION APPEARS ON MY IDRIVE COMPUTER. I HAVEN'T CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AS OF YET SINCE I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH ONLINE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IT HAS BECOME EVIDENT THAT THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE IN THESE CARS. THROUGH MY RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THAT SOME DEALERSHIP WILL FIX IT AND SOME WON'T AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY. A PASSENGER AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT HAS BEEN ON IN MY WIFE'S 2006 BMW 530I FOR THE PAST YEAR. DESPITE THE NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN (ACTION NUMBER EA08001 AND PE07045), BMW SAYS THIS CAR IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL AND WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I ALSO HAVE A 2006 BMW 530I WITH THE SAME AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON. BMW WILL FIX MY PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THAT MY CAR HAS "COMFORT SEATS" WHILE MY WIFE'S CAR HAS "SPORTS SEATS." TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 BMW 530I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE WARNING MAT SENSOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE MAT SENSOR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT FAILED TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V384000 (AIR BAGS:FRONTAL). NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,800 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 105,300.
