2016 BMW X1 Unknown Or Other Problems

Known HVAC-produced moisture drainage issue that cause water to get trapped inside the system and cabin air filter housing, causing significant mold or mildew to grow on the filter itself and spread spores through cabin ventilation system and contaminates air inside cabin which poses serious health hazards.

My 2016 BMW X1 28i is leaking coolant. I am also getting a smell of something burning inside the car when driving. This is consistent with problems associated with the 2024 recall for water pump. I was told by my dealership that my vehicle was not one affected by the recall. I think it might be one that is. The vehicle could catch fire if there is a failure of the wiring.

After I got my 2016 BMW X1 from Service, I heard a rough sound when I reversed the vehicle from Park. After a few days, I noticed my vehicle showing an error saying "Secure Vehicle against rolling" every time I parked the vehicle and advising me to use my hand brake. I then did some search on the web and finally took it for servicing at BMW Rockville, Maryland where the service department is managed by Auto Nation. They gave me a quote for around $2500 to fix this issue. Based on the research of this issue on the web, it looks like a $10 spring malfunction causes this issue. I have less than 55,000 miles on my vehicle. My 2016 X1 is showing in the dashboard a “secure vehicle against rolling” transmission message; the fault is due to a little spring in the selector level which has been reported in other BMW and MINI models. I recently found a report in the NHTSA website related to a 10 year warranty extension for the Mini [XXX] ) but it does not include the X1 model, which suffers from the same type of defect. The warning showed up for the first time on Tuesday [XXX]. I have made an appointment with the car dealer to diagnose the issue. My car just started showing an error code every time I turn it off or on saying to "Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped" with a transmission status error code but is running perfectly fine.

During the parking of the vehicle (gearbox shifter in “Park Position") and after turning off the engine, the iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake and have the problem checked by dealership. This happens when I start up the vehicle in park and when turning off the vehicle. Also, when the vehicle is parked on level ground the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, the error goes away. Dealership error computer diagnostic shows the code “420106” - Shift Lock solenoid: Selector lever wrongly not locked in Park. I shared with the dealership that this is a manufacturer problem and if they could fix it for free or give me a discount to fix the problem due to safety issues and I was told “No” I have to pay the total cost to repair this problem. Currently I am still driving a vehicle that can increase my risk of injury and the injury of bystanders. I purchased this vehicle after I retired because BMW makes good vehicles and this would be the last car I would purchase in my life.

Error message stating “secure vehicle from rolling”. This is a common issue with the X1. I’ve found countless complaints of the issue on BMW forums. Dealers are quoting $3000-$3500 for the repairs due to the time it takes to repair. BMW has in some cases acknowledged the issue and provided repair as a goodwill gesture but has yet to issue a recall for this known issue.

Front left strut and right motor mount failed at less than 40K miles. Vehicle was not driven off road and was not in any accidents. This seems extremely early for such a failure. BMW dealer noted there was a "bulletin" on this model that if one strut failed, the pair should be replaced. It seems there may be a larger issue and possibly the need for a safety recall. When turning car on and off error message “Secure Vehicle against rolling”. Everything shifts completely fine in the car, the parking brake engages and the car shifts into park fine. I’ve been told by dealer to bring in for $199 to do an assessment. I see on line this is a common issue and dealers charge between $2000 and $3000 to repair. I submit that this issue should be corrected by BMW through a recall.

The sunroof screen that covers the panoramic sunroof has become detached from the retractable component. Because of this, the screen has begun to sag, which is now partially obstructing visibility through the rearview mirror. This obstruction is a life threatening situation because of lowered visibility. (According to online forums dedicated to this manufacturer's vehicles, this is a common issue for this make and model. Unfortunately, the manufacturer considers the sunroof shade a "cosmetic" component, and it is not covered by warranties or service plans.)

Hello, the purpose of me writing to you today is to submit a request about my 2016 BMW X1. I researched the problem and it seem to be a normal problem or recall on these particular vehicles. My X1 currently has an error message stating " secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center. My BMW was completely fine until now. Since this is a common issue with this particular model that it should be covered under BMW. untimely failure of the shade blind can leave it sagging/hanging and blocking the view of the driver while operating the vehicle. This is a major hazard

I parked my car in the garage and secured everything and when I turned the ignition off and cluster message appeared "secure vehicle against rolling". The car is parked on a level surface and parking brake engaged.

I took my car to the dealer after I started to get an error message saying that I needed to put the parking brake on to prevent rolling. It was very stressful driving the car while this error message was in place. When I took it took the dealer, I was charged $200 for a diagnostic and was told there's nothing operationally wrong with the car but the sensor can't tell that the car is in park and is giving me this error message. I was quoted over $2,500 to fix this--replacing the entire gear shift assembly apparently because there is a broken spring somewhere in the system. This absolutely should be a recall issue. It's ridiculous that owners should be required to spend so much money to get this fixed just to get peace of mind and feel assured that the vehicle we're driving is safe. I have gotten all required and suggested maintenance religiously and promptly, but this one is a tough pill to swallow. BMW should do the right thing and recall vehicles to correct this. If they're not willing to do this voluntarily, they should be forced to do so. Thank you very much for looking into this. Unknown, design fault! I’m having an issue with the warning light saying Secure Vehicle from Rolling every time I turn on/off my car. My main menu or radio doesn’t appear until I confirm notice about the parking brake. There were no warnings before this it just toned and has been consistent every time. The dealer says it may be a small spring in the gear box, while the gears are working good.

At 44,000 miles, I began getting the error code "secure vehicle against rolling" every time I started the engine. Took car in to local dealership who advised I needed to have the gear shift assembly replaced as the car could roll even when placed in park. Out of fear that the car could roll and cause damage to myself or others, I requested they order the part immediately. After doing some research online, I learned that this has been a problem with certain BMW's and mini coopers since at least 2014. I do not understand why BMW has not resolved this issue and issued a recall or at least agreed to cover the cost of repair once the problem is detected. I contacted BMW corporate who replied no recall had been issued and they would not cover the cost of 2090.36 I paid for the repair.

The BMW's display showed "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling". We took the car to the BMW dealership and they repaired the issue with a complete gear selector display assembly. We are concerned that this is a safety issue and we understand this may be a common problem with BMW. The vehicle in question had only 22,669 miles on the odometer when repaired.

The sunroof cover fell on my daughter while driving. It is made out of black material. We went straight to the dealership, they said that the blade was blade was broken. Thankfully she was on a familiar road near our house and was able to pull over. However, if this had happened on a interstate, it would result in a serious accident. I strongly believe it’s a defected product and should be recalled. We have been bringing the car to a dealership every 10k miles for full inspection, so this kind of dangerous situation does not occur, but it did.

The panoramic sunroof shade blind has become detached due to failing adhesive. The consequence of this failure renders the vehicle difficult to drive and impacts safety of occupants and non occupants. To illustrate this issue, it is easier to quote the incident. On driving the vehicle the sunroof shade became unattached from its rail (right side). A natural thing to do is attempt to open the shade and close again in the hope that it re-attaches itself. This only made the situation worse. The loose shade impedes the drivers view out the right side of the vehicle. Driving the vehicle, it is crucial that this view should be clear and unobstructed (especially when lane changing on a freeway!). A corollary to the above issue is that the sagging loose blind is a distraction to the driver of the vehicle. The drivers attention needs to be 100% dedicated to the operation of the vehicle and the safety of others. This flapping distraction reduces this significantly.

Selector lever failed causing a warning message to appear on the screen. Dealership is reviewing the damage and the cost is not under the warranty.

I am seeing this error while getting in the parked vehicle -'Secure Vehicle against rolling' in the odometer display and in the dashboard display - 'Secure Vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center' .

The sunroof shadescreen failed to close: it is a safety issue because it is impossible to close the shade anymore and the sun is hitting your head and eyes all the time: when I first noticed it I was driving and a sound came from the sun roof and if I looked it would have been a crash. Taking to the dealership iwould cost 2000 dollars to replace. It is a manufacturer defect that that something that is used so infrequently fails so easily. To be honest we have probably used it only a couple dozen times since we have the car and I can’t believe it would fail so easily. I also read on forums that this happened to a lot of other car owners who are complaining about the same issue so it is something that the manufacturer should cover:

Opened sunroof shade back to see out of sunroof for a few hours. When I tried closing the sunroof shade it stops about a foot out and retracts backs. Seems to be stuck on one side and unsure as to why. Nothing happened it the few hours it was opened

Use car once every couple of weeks. Pressed button to retract glass panoramic roof/black liner and after it was about 2/3 of way back I heard a clicking noise, then ripping noise. Stopped retraction and saw the front of liner askew, left side having retracted more than right. Liner can not be extracted. Not covered by our extended warranty. Aside from the performance failure, this means car interior will overheat when summer comes.

The Panoramic Sunroof Shade Blind is sagging for no reason and I am concerned that it would suddenly fall off completely due to the wind or other conditions during driving, which could block my line of sight or lead to accidents. This has been confirmed by the dealer which recommended to replace the shade, that is not covered under CPO warranty and would cost around $1,900. There were no warning lamps prior to the failure.

Moon roof fabric gets loose and falls into the car, causing it to block drivers view.

The headliner of my panoramic roof has come undone causing my driving view to become obstructed. I reached out to BMW USA who said that it will have to be replaced and will cost $3,118.95 to replace it. I feel as though this should be on the recall list as I am not the only person who has had an issue with the headliner coming undone.

The sunroof shade in my vehicle had been sagging on the passenger side and when I retracted it, it bunched up and is now off track and stuck in position. I currently have my vehicle at a BMW service center for them to take a look at it. In terms of safety, I am unsure that it is a safety concern but it sure is an inconvenience.

The shade that covers the sunroof ripped and was hanging down covering the rear window. This happened while I was driving, so I looked in the rearview mirror and all of a sudden couldn't see anything. BMW says that this is not covered by warranty because it is cosmetic, but it seems like a safety issue to me. I know I am not the only one who has had this issue, which is why I am reporting it. Without warning, the sunshade came loose on one side. Apparently it is a very common problem and repairs can be upwards of $2500. This has the potential to be very dangerous if the shade comes completely loose or detached. It can be seen hanging down when looking in the rear view mirror and obstructs the view. The problem needs to be addressed.

YESTERDAY (APRIL 18, 2021), WHILE I WAS EXITING THE EXPRESSWAY TO THE TOWN OF SILVERTHORNE, COLORADO, THE SUNROOF GLASS OF MY BMW X1 SPONTANEOUSLY SHATTERED INTO MY HEAD AND MY WIFE'S AND OF COURSE ALL OVER THE CAR. I WAS TRAVELLING ABOUT 50MPH AND SLOWING DOWN TO THE EXIT RAMP; THERE WAS NO VEHICLE AHEAD OF US. MY WIFE AND I SUSTAINED SOME SMALL CUTS AND I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A SENSATION OF A FOREIGN OBJECT IN MY EYES THAT SEEMS TO GO AWAY AND BACK AGAIN. NO OTHER INJURIES BEYOND THAT.

THE PANORAMIC SHADE THAT SHADES THE SUNROOF FROM THE PASSENGERS IS DIPPING DOWN ON ONE SIDE. WE HAVE NOT DRAWN BACK THIS SHADE MUCH BUT IT HAS STARTED TO SAG ON RIGHT SIDE BECAUSE THE ADHESIVE THAT KEEPS IT IN PLACE IS USELESS. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM I'VE HEARD FOR THE BMW X SERIES.

2016 BMW X1 NEW SAV EQUIPPED WITH COMFORT ACCESS . APPROACHED LOCKED PARKED HATCHBACK AND DEPRESSED HATCH EXTERIOR LOCK HANDLE. HATCH OPENED TO MID-HEIGHT OPENING TO ALLOW 6 FT TALL PERSON TO GET INTO THE TRUNK HATCH AREA. WITHIN APPROXIMATELY TEN SECONDS, LOUD WARNING SOUND PLAYED WHILE HATCH STARTED TO AUTOMATICALLY CLOSE. THIS WAS STARTLING AND UNEXPECTED. TRIED TO REMOVE MYSELF QUICKLY FROM VEHICLE AND WAS STRUCK BY CLOSING TAILGATE. SUFFERED BLEEDING FOREHEAD GASH AND NEEDED SEVERAL STITCHES AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM. DID NOT HIT ANY BUTTONS ON THE VEHICLE OR THE REMOTE KEY. ALSO DID NOT DO ANY FOOT WIGGLE DANCE OR KICKING IN PROXIMITY OF REAR BUMPER TO ACTIVATE CLOSURE OF HATCH TAILGATE (THIS FEATURE IS SILLY BUT I CAN APPRECIATE IT BEING UTILIZED TO OPEN THE HATCH, BUT NOT TO CLOSE IT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS). I WAS GIVEN AN INDIRECT IMPRESSION AFTER THE INCIDENT THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ARMED WITH THE ALARM SYSTEM THAT PERHAPS IT TREATED THE OPENING OF THE HATCH AS AN INTRUSION THEREBY CLOSING ITSELF. HOWEVER I CANNOT SUBSTANTIATE THIS AS I DO NOT WANT TO SACRIFICE FURTHER INJURY ). UNCLEAR OF WHY THIS HAPPENED BUT IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY THE AUTO CLOSURE SHOULD NOT PHYSICALLY OCCUR UNLESS A PHYSICAL BUTTON IS DEPRESSED. THERE ARE FOUR SUCH BUTTONS ON THIS VEHICLE: ON THE LOWER DRIVERS DOOR, TWO ON THE INSIDE RIGHT HAND EDGE OF THE TAILGATE, ANOTHER ON THE REMOTE KEY. I HOPE THIS NOTICE WILL MAKE OTHER X1 USERS AWARE OF THIS CONCERN. I DO HOPE THE MANUFACTURER WILL PROGRAM OR DESIGN A FIX TO ADDRESS THE CONCERN. IT IS A PROBLEM AND PERHAPS A HIDDEN DANGER AS ONE DOES NOT EXPECTED TO BE MAMED OR INJURED BY THEIR CAR IN THIS MANNER. BMW NJ CORPORATE WAS INFORMED AND SUGGESTED TO WORK OUT A FIX DIRECTLY WITH THE BMW DEALER. MANUFACTURER SHOULD REDESIGN FEATURES TOWARDS CUSTOMER SAFETY.

I BELIEVE THAT THE EXHAUST TAIL PIPES COME OUT TOO FAR. I WAS GETTING SOMETHING OUT OF THE REAR OF MY X1 AND BURNED MY LEFT LEG ON THE LEFT REAR EXHAUST PIPE. THE CAR WAS PARKED ON A NEIGHBORHOOD STREET AND TURNED OFF AT THE TIME. HOWEVER, I HAD JUST FINISHED DRIVING IT.
