My car suddenly displayed a drivetrain malfunction error, and I cannot identify the reason because the car was driving normally in a residential area.
The contact owns a 2017 BMW X1. The contact received a notification letter of BMW Campaign Number: SIB 01 02 24(Evap System Purge(Vent) Valve Extended Limited Warranty). The contact stated that while reversing, the vehicle hesitated and vibrated while the engine revved. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that upon shifting to drive(D), the vehicle responded as intended. The vehicle was taken to a collision center, where an unknown diagnosis was made, and an unknown repair was performed; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

X1 gear shifter is causing a Transmission waring - and comment to secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult Service center. I have spoken with BMW mechanic and other mechanic who have stated that it is common issue with X1 and Mini's that use same shifter. A spring breaks off in the shifter. Mini - issued a large warranty extension but it appears BMW has not.
The warning light “Secure vehicle against rolling” appears when the gear is shifted into park. An additional message reads: “Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center.” It has been verified that the gear is indeed mechanically in the park position. Upon further investigation, I discovered numerous BMW X1 owners reporting this same issue on various online forums. The common cause appears to be a broken spring inside the gear shifter. This spring normally activates a switch that notifies the vehicle's electrical system that it’s in park. When the spring fails, the system does not register this correctly, triggering the warning. After contacting BMW North America customer service, I was directed to visit an authorized service center. The estimated repair cost is around $3,000 to replace the gear shifter—despite the fact that this problem matches dozens of other complaints already submitted to the NHTSA. I'm filing this report to contribute to the growing number of similar complaints from BMW X1 owners in hopes that the issue will be formally acknowledged and addressed.
Car experiences a very rough idle at start and often stalls after being placed in gear. This can happen after car starts moving. I drive this car and am experiencing regular stalls after taking off.
"Secure vehicle against rolling" warning light comes on when vehicle's gear is shifted into park. Additional information displayed states, "Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center." Confirmed vehicle's gear is mechanically shifted into park. Researched issue, and found many BMW X1 owners posting to various online forums stating root cause is due to a broken spring in the gear shifter that is supposed to toggle a switch informing the vehicle's electrical system that the vehicle is shifted into park. Hence the warning message. My vehicle is currently mechanically sound with no issues. My fear is that I have no way of knowing when a real issue does occur because the warning message is constantly displayed. I am submitting this complaint to add to the 100+ other NHTSA complaints that have already been filed for this issue by other BMW X1 owners with the hope that action will be taken to address it.
When shifting vehicle to park "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" warning displays on iDrive and warning message center along with "contact BMW service center". Shifter assembly failed internally. $850 shifter assembly has a $10 internal spring that broke and requires replacement. My safety at risk due to vehicle being unsafe when parked and possibly allowed to roll if not secured. Problem can be reproduced at all times when parking vehicle. Warning is also present at start up. Dealership quoted over $3000 to replace shifter assembly. There is no incident or damage to vehicle and it has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance reps. Warning lights came on after shifter assembly internal spring failure and continually afterwards while parking and starting the vehicle. Must accept warning message on iDrive system.
The secure vehicle from rolling warning alert keeps coming on everytime I get into the vvehicle I have to clear it everything I start driving or it will keep on chiming if I don't
Warning light comes on stating “Secure Vehicle from Rolling” when vehicle is in park. I called BMW and took the vehicle in the next morning. The BMW dealership stated the Transmission needed to be repaired shift lever module. At a cost of $2,858.40.
When gear selector is put in park warning comes on SECURE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING. Not knowing if this is a false warning or not car could roll if emergency brake is not applied. Numerous complaints to BMW about this condition happening on many BMW X1 models on BMW forum and complaints to BMW also to NHTSA. By myself. No prior warnings.
Warning light comes on stating “Secure Vehicle Against Rolling” when vehicle is in park. I called BMW and took the vehicle in the next morning. The BMW dealership stated the GEAR SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY needed to be replaced and needs immediate attention. At a cost of $2,858.40. Apparently I am not the only person who feels this is a safety issue due to a manufacturing malfunction and should be repaired by BMW. The bigger problem is people are opting to ignore the warning because it’s to costly to repair and have found a way to override the warning light. This is a safety concern to the public and I hope it will be addressed in a recall. My vehicle only has 53k miles on it and has been well maintained and cared for.
Warning saying Secure Vehicle from Rolling. Spring in the shifter is broken.
SECURE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING warning light came on with car in park and handbrake on...checked online seems 5 dollar spring in shifter broke and they want thousands to fix.
I purchased the car used in September 2023. About three months ago got the following warning "Transmission : Secure Vehicle with Parking Brake when Stationary. Consult Service Center." The issue seems to be a Shiftlock solenoid selector Lever coil spring that was compromised. No accidents. This is triggering a warning every time upon tuyrning the vehicle on.
Warning states "secure vehicle from rolling" even though it is in park. The car operates without problems. It is out of warranty with 90000 miles. I understand this is a common problem with this model. Thank you
There is a small, broken spring in my shift lever ($10 part) that makes the car think it cannot be put into park. This otherwise does not affect the operation of the vehicle, but every time I get in the car, I am greeted with a warning message to "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" and "visit a service center". This failure is ubiquitous amongst F48 X1 cars; there are entire threads and 3rd party services to replace the small, cheap part, as opposed to a job BMW dealers try and sell you for over 2000$ to replace the entire shifter unit, which isn't the problem. A recall for this ridiculous part and design should be forced.
During the parking of this vehicle (when you put the gearbox shifter in the P position), the iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. Have the problem checked by Service Partner.” This happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground. The error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, you click "OK" and the error goes away, until the next time you park it. I have found through one of the biggest BMW global forums - [XXX] that this issue is very common, and it seems that the problem most likely is either in weak design of gearbox shifter unit or in gearbox mechatronic unit and unfortunately it is common for BMW models F48, F39, F45 and F46. At the same time, BMW hasn’t announced any recall procedure, despite the fact that both of the units mentioned are quite expensive and definitely shouldn’t appear in modern cars. It also seems that the component that faults is a small spring deep inside the gear selector, that costs less than $10. There are videos on the process to replace that, but BMW dealers quote the complete replacement of the gear selector, for more than $2,000 and sometimes even up to $4,000 dollars. I feel there should be a recall. There is a law firm collecting signatures for a class action... [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The gear box failed, the battery failed and the coolant system leaked at the same time. It is at the dealer now who has confirmed these. A vehicle dashboard light came on before this occurred to tell me to engage the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling. Where I live, there are no hills so no reason to ever engage a parking brake and this dashboard light is meaningless. However, when I noticed this light, I made an appointment with the dealership and was able to drive the car there several days later. I thought it would not be a major issue but learned it was. The car has only 65,000 miles, and I have never been in an accident with this car. It is a safety issue, as it was a major problem with no effective warning and no real explanation in the owner's manual. I was fortunate to have brought the car in. I have not received the car back yet but the cost is substantial to repair.
Car experiences a very rough idle at start and often stalls after being place in gear. This can happen after car starts moving. My wife drives this car and is experiencing regular stalls after pulling away.
Getting "Secure vehicle against rolling" warning with Transmission Error - Contact Service Center. Dealer indicated it was a faulty spring/component in the gear shift. They do not replace the spring, but the entire gear shift with a quoted repair/labor cost of $2,700. It is a sensor problem where the car cannot recognize if it is in Park. This is a common defect in the 2017 BMW X1 that occurs suddenly. BMW should issue a recall or extended warranty repair. Please investigate.
The following error message is displayed: "secure vehicle against rolling" this message is displayed due to a broken spring in the gear selector mechanism. Because of the broken spring, the car's computer cannot detect whether or not the gear selector is in park. This creates a safety hazard because the gear selector can be shifted into drive without having your foot on the brake. Note that a very large number of BMW owners have complained about this problem on social media and in the BMW message forum. This is clearly wide scale problem that stems from a faulty design and it creates a potential safety hazard.
Code 420106: Shiftlock Solenoid: selector wrongly not locked in park. 'Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary' error message in I-drive. This is a very common issue with these vehicles, and BMW refused to help due to the labor cost involved. It's a $0.50 part and with labor the repair exceeds $2000. Essentially the vehicle does not realized if it is in park or not, and chimes at you to use the parking brake to prevent it from rolling. There are thousands of people affected by this very expensive manufacturer's defect.
Vehicle at 60,000 miles. Vehicle displays an error message: "Transmission: secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center." The problem appears to be with the gear shifter, with a broken spring that causes the error. The component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer.
I am getting an error message to “Secure vehicle against rolling” when I place vehicle in park and turn it off.
Secure Vehicle Against Rolling message displayed every time the vehicle is put in park
Error message displayed: "Secure vehicle against rolling" This message is displayed due to a broken spring in the gear selector mechanism. As such, BMW should be forced to do a formal recall to correct this issue. The repair effort requires 6-8 hours of work to tear apart the center console, replace the spring, and put it all back together...at a cost of around $2,000. Consumers should not have the bear the cost for what is clearly a design flaw.
Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error: a spring in the shifter will fix the issue . During the parking of vehicle (gearbox shifter in P position) and turning off the engine, iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. Have the problem checked by Service Partner.” This happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground. The error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turn on the engine again and put the shifter either in R or D position, error goes away.
Message every time I park- “Transmission:Secure vehicle with parking break when stoped. Contact service center”.
Vehicle states “ secure vehicle from Rolling” message. This could be a safety issue with something with the trans selector and/or parking brake and/or a door open, or not being recognized as being closed. I’ve read lots of other complaints Online too so thought be worth posting.
Error msg indicating “secure vehicle against rolling” appeared. also, “transmission: secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. consult service center.” apparently from many comments from other bmw owners and mechanics the issue is common and is related to an inexpensive spring that has broken in the shifter box. it seems the broken spring prevents the electronic system from receiving a signal that the car is in park. also, from comments, this a very expensive repair. i’m not sure of the safety risk with this, but perhaps it is time for a recall??
When parked, the transmission warning light is on saying "Secure vehicle with parking break when stopped. Consult service center" The service center states that this is like driving with the door open. This appears to be a very common issue in X1, but the BMW dealership does not recognize the common safety issue as a recall.
2017 bmw x1 secure vehicle against rolling light is coming on. dealer wants 7 hours of labor to replace a $13 part
Putting the car in park, the message on display states: "Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. This makes drivers think the car is going to roll away. This is very well known to owners of this car. The actual problem is the Gear shift steptronic unit "lock spring failure", which is an actual "spring", it's very thin and small which is completely unsuitable for long term constant use. BMW refuses to fix this issue.
Error code states please engage parking brake while car is in park to avoid rolling. Apparently this is a common problem with a faulty spring in the shift gear. BMW should do a recall as this is a very expensive repair and a common issue and is a safety problem.
A warning light appears: "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error". I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous vehicles owners with the same exact problem. It appears that a component in the gear selector has failed to properly detect the gear selector position, specifically when it is in park. Even though the gear selector is in park and the parking brake is applied as indicated by lights and physically attempting to move the vehicle, there is a warning message to secure a vehicle with parking brake to prevent it from rolling. This creates a safety hazard because the gear selector can be shifted into Drive without having your foot on the brake. Note that a very large number of BMW owners have complained about this problem on social media and in the BMW message forum. This is clearly a wide-scale problem that stems from a faulty design, and it creates a potential safety hazard. As such, BMW should be forced to do a formal recall to correct this issue.
Warning message appears on dash every time you stop and start car - Secure Vehicle from Rolling, Dealer saying no active recall on it. But there should be.
Error message "Secure Vehicle against rolling engage parking brake" on starting car and when parking. Same problem is reported all over the internet regarding the 2017 BMW X1 having this same problem, error message caused by a faulty spring in the Shifter panel.
Warning message on dash saying 'Secure Vehicle Against Rolling' when ignition is turned off, and immediately on entering vehicle. The dealer states that the shift lock solenoid needs replacing, and is a common issue that can make it impossible to shift gears If the vehicle rolls while in park, this could be a saftey risk for anyone nearby. Confirmed by dealer. Not looked at by anyone else. Warning as described above
A caution light appears and an error message "Secure vehicle against rolling. Secure vehicle with the parking brake when stopped." Come to find out there have been several complaints about 2017 BMW X1 having this same problem, error message caused by a faulty spring in the Shifter panel. Seems to me that this should be put on a Recall list as soon as possible as this could cause a safety issue if in fact the system malfunctions and causes the car to roll or shift into drive when stopped. This error message just started about a week ago. BMW dealership has checked the car and confirmed the issue is a faulty spring and that the whole Shifter needs to be replaced. Pulled codes, received code 420106 Shiftlock Solenoid Selector Lever Wrongly Not Locked in P. Forums all over the internet with hundreds of the same exact issue. Commonplace and should be recalled.
I am getting a “secure vehicle from rolling” warning. Online many people report this is a problem with a gear shift ring. Is this being looked at as a recall?
When placed in park , vehicle reads “secure vehicle against rolling “ and “ Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center.” Upon research , this seems to be a common issue amongst this vehicle make and specific model that should be addressed. A parking brake should not be a requirement to ensure that a vehicle does not roll away into pedestrians , establishments , etc. when parked. No warning signs were provided prior to the alerts.
A small spring in the shifter has broken not allowing the vehicle to recognize it is in park and could roll while parked causing injury. This is a known issue for BMWs in this model and year range. It can be fixed with a new spring but dealer insists that a new shifter is needed. So a $20 part fix vs. a $600 part fix. There are hundreds of others online and world wide that this has happened to. There now is a warning when shutting off vehicle to protect against rolling. This is happening to relatively low mile vehicles.
7/19/2022 I got a drivetrain warning. Turned car off and on and it cleared the warning but now I am getting a secure vehicle against rolling notice every time I turn car off. This appears to be the same problem with other BMW X 1s.
I’m having an issue with the warning light saying “Secure Vehicle from Rolling“. Vehicle has less than 47K miles. Many other owners reporting same issue in online discussion groups and forums. Identified multiple reports for the same issues already identified on NHTSA's website for complaints.
There is a light that came on that states Transmission: secure vehicle against rolling. This is a common problem with these cars and is very expensive to fix. This is a defect in these cars and I don’t want to find out what will happen in the event that my car does roll especially my children in the car. I chose BMW because it is not only a luxury vehicle but was suppose to be safe. This to me is NOT safe.
My 2017 BMW x1 with around 45,000 miles randomly pops up with a "secure vehicle against rolling" warning on my dash when I park now. After reading online, it seems to be a very common issue among BMW x1's that should be a recall.

The contact owns a 2017 BMW X1. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the warning message "Secure Vehicle with Parking Brake" illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to drive the vehicle; however, he would engage the parking brake whenever he was parking the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the solenoid and spring had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.

Warning light - Secure Vehicle from rolling Car is in Park and Brake is applied but warning light comes up
I am getting a warning when I turn on the car to secure vehicle against rolling.
car started showing an error every time I got into the vehicle saying to "Secure vehicle against rolling. Apparently it's a common issue with the gear selector.
“Secure car against rolling” Message caused by failing spring that bmw appears to want >$4000 to fix while the part is only 5-6$. Appears to be a very common problem for this vehicle that needs to be addressed by bmw. Thanks
"Secure vehicle against rolling" warning effecting my vehicle. Looking online, I can not believe how many others have this very same error. Bmw should do a fix recall because they want to charge 3000 dollars for a 5 dollar spring replacement.
Therefore the functionality of this safety device, the warning message, has failed. The cost to repair this is extraordinary and will lead people to not have it repaired, unless it is repairable under warranty. Without repair, people will just ignore the message and then, if they were to actually leave the gear selector in neutral , have the potential for property damage or injury caused by the vehicle rolling. I believe this failure should be the subject of the recall.
- Automatic transmission gearshifter, torsion spring. - The vehicle could roll when it is parked without engaging engine break and hit other vehicles and pedestrian. - Not confirmed by the dealer yet. The service visit is scheduled. However, on the Internet, many people complaining for $2,000-$3,000 repair estimates for $10 or less torsion spring breakage. - The problem started December 5, 2021. This is a product Liability and quality issue and consumers should be able to get the actual part repair not replace the whole thing.
Warning light appears: Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error. I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous complaints by BMW X1 owners who discovered that it was a $10 spring in the shifter that dealers were charging between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. Many opted not to do the repair due to the excessive cost, a decision that could prove catastrophic for some. In the likely event that your agency is already aware of this problem, I am writing to add my name to the list of complaints in the hope that NHTSA investigates and perhaps orders a recall.
