The contact owned a 2008 Buick Enclave. The contact stated while driving at 20 MPH, a warning message indicating that the vehicle was overheated illuminated. The contact pulled into a nearby parking lot. The contact then opened the hood of the vehicle by engaging the power release button inside of the vehicle. The contact saw black smoke and flames coming out from underneath the hood. The contact immediately exited the vehicle. The contact attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. A fire department report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle remained at the scene. The local dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in a recall associated with the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V240000 (Electrical System). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

TL* THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER OWNS A 2008 BUICK ENCLAVE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HER DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND WAS DRIVING UP A HILL AT AN UNKNOWN RATE OF SPEED, A FLAME HAD IGNITED FROM THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING. HER BOYFRIEND EXITED THE VEHICLE, CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND SAW THAT THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. A FELLOW MOTORIST WITNESSED THE SITUATION AND ASSISTED HER DAUGHTERS BOYFRIEND BY GIVING HIM A FIRE EXTINGUISHER WHICH THE BOYFRIEND USED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. A FIRE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER HAD THE VEHICLE INITIALLY TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME WHERE IT WAS THEN TOWED TO INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS DUE TO A "MECHANICAL DEFECT" AND WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE FOR A REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER HAD YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD YET TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 95,000.

SOMETIMES IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP, SOMETIMES IT DOESNT. NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHY. CARS COST TOO MUCH TO BE PLAYING GUESS THE PROBLEM!! TAKE TO DEALER AT $100. A VISIT FOR THEM TO GUESS AND ULTIMATELY NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. BECAUSE A WEEK LATER THE VEHICLE IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING YOU TOOK IT IN FOR. I JUST WISH SOMEONE NEW WHAT THE REAL PROBLEM WAS. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC, MY CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE. RPMS WERE HIGH AND I HAD TO PULL OVER FROM THE FAST LANE WITH TRACTOR-TRAILERS DRIVING AROUND ME AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, IT SEEMS THIS HAS BEEN SEEN IN ALOT OF CARS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED. I HOPE NO ONE DIES TO MAKE THE MANUFACTURER RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THE MECHANIC SAID THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. RECOMMENDED A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. IN FACT, THERE WERE TWO OTHER BUICK/GM CARS WITH THE SAME ISSUE WAITING TO BE WORKED ON. THE CODES WERE P0776, P0796 AND P0700.

OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON FIRST, THEN HEARD LOUD TAPPING NOISE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED OVER CHECKED THE OIL (FRESH OIL CHANGE THE DAY BEFORE) IT WAS STILL FULL. GOT THE VEHICLE HOME AND HAD THE CODES PULLED. THE DREADED TIMING CHAIN CODES OF P0008 AND P0017 AT 128,000 MILES ON THE CAR. MOST SHOPS THAT I CALLED WON'T EVEN TOUCH THIS BECAUSE OF THE EXTENSIVE REPAIR. THAT LEAVES THE STEALERSHIP AT THE PRICE OF $3000 AND THAT IS IF NOTHING ELSE WAS DAMAGED. WHY WERE THE 2008'S LEFT OUT OF THE BUICK TIMING CHAIN RECALL WHEN IT HAS THE SAME 3.6L ENGINE? THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER BUICK. THIS HAPPENED LAST YEAR (06/2018), BUT I KNEW IT WOULD BE A COSTLY REPAIR, SO THE CAR SAT UNTIL NOW.

THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME (ORIGINALLY REPLACED AT 56K MILES). THERE WAS NO SIGN ON THE DASH THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH EITHER.BUICK OFFERED NO HELP WITH THIS BEING SO UNUSUAL FOR THE ENGINE TO NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THE TRANSMISSION FOR THE SECOND TIME.

THEN A FEW MONTHS LATER MY LIFTGATE JUST OPENS BY ITSELF THAT HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I JUST BEEN WAKE UP IN THE MORNING THE AND THE LIFTGATE IS OPEN. ONE MORNING MY HUSBAND WAKES UP TO GO TO WORK AND GOES OUTSIDE MY CAR HAS ACTUALLY REMOTE START ITSELF I WAS JUST SITTING IN THE YARD RUNNING LIKE SOMEBODY REMOTE STARTED IT BUT NO ONE WAS UP TO DO THAT. AT NIGHT WHEN I GO TO BED I DON'T LOCK MY VEHICLE BECAUSE I'M AFRAID IT MAY BE AUTO STARTED THE NEXT MORNING WHEN I GET UP AND NOW MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON WITH MY SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL AND SERVICE STABILITRAK LIGHT THE ENGINE IS GIVING THE CODE FOR INJECTORS 2 4 AND 6. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND TWO GMC BUICK DEALER HAVE SAID DIFFERENT FIX METHOD. VERY BACK FOR ME. THEY WANT TO FIX DIFFERENT PROBLEMS. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE REAL PROBLEM IS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE OTHER THAN RECOMMENDING THE CONTACT REPLACE THE PART. THERE WERE NO RECALLS REGARDING THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE BUICK DEALER IDENTIFIED TIMINIG CHAIN AND TIMING ACTUATOR AS ISSUES. THESE PARTS WERE REPLACED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT WE PURCHASED. AT 104K MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN; THE DEALER SAYS IT IS THE SAME TIMING CHAIN THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACE. BUT THIS GM NOR THE DEALER CAN EXPLAIN WHY THE TIMING CHAIN FAILED AFTER ONLY 14K MILES OF USE. TIMING CHAIN APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE ON 2008 ENCLAVE EVEN THOUGH GM HAS REFUSED TO COVER THEM. ALSO IT APPEARS THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE NOT ANY BETTER.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT 70000 MILES. BROUGHT INTO DEALER AND TOLD STRETCHED TIMING CHAIN. ALTHOUGH GM HAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MANY OF THESE ENGINES IN THE ENCLAVE, I WAS TOLD THAT MINE WAS NOT A PART OF THE QUALIFIED BATCH FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THAT ALL COSTS WOULD BE OUT OF POCKET. I AM CURRENTLY STUCK WITH A VEHICLE THAT NEEDS OVER $3500 IN REPAIRS ON A KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS NEEDED EMISSIONS TESTING AND IS AS SUCH UNDRIVABLE.

MYRPM HAND WENT ALL THE WAY UP TO 4 WHICH IT NORMALLY STAYS BETWEEN 1 AND 2, AND MY GAS HAND WENT FROM FULL, TO HALF, FULL, AND ALMOST EMPTY IN A FEW SECONDS. IT HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES WITH THESE SAME ISSUES BUT DEALERSHIP KEPT SAYING THAT NO CODES WOULD POP UP TO SEE WHAT'S THE ISSUE UNTIL A WEEK AGO, IT DID IT AGAIN FOR ABOUT 5TH TIME AND I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO ADVISED ALL KINDS OF CODES WERE POPPING UP WITH MY ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. ALSO THE WRITING ON MY CONTROL BUTTONS HAVE WORN OFF AND MY FRONT SUSPENSION NEEDS REPLACED AND MY DRIVER SEAT TRACKS WHICH ARE NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY. BUICK NERDS TO HOLD TRUE TO THEIR NAME AND COMPENSATE OR REPLACE THESE DETECTED 2008 BUICK ENCLAVES. BUICK IS NOT HOLDING TRUE TO THEIR NAME. LOST STEERING AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. HAD TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC. GM STATED REPLACEMENT WOULD COST $4500 FOR NEW TRANSMISSION. DECLINED GM'S ESTIMATE AND WENT TO A DIFFERENT AUTO SHOP AND REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION. MECHANICS AT THE TRANSMISSION SHOP STATED THAT GM/BUICK WAS WELL AWARE OF THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION BUT THEY HAVE NOT RECALLED THESE FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS. AUTO SHOP STATED THE PART TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION ONLY COSTS $7. DIDN'T WANT TO GET A NEW GM TRANSMISSION AS IT MAY BE JUST AS FAULTY AS THE CURRENT TRANSMISSION THAT HAD THE PROBLEM. DRIVING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON, SET TO 80MPH. AFTER HITTING A RIDGE AT EDGE AT EDGE OF BRIDGE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUTTERED CAUSING VEHICLE TO AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF CRUISE CONTROL AND DECELERATE QUICKLY. I WENT FROM GOING 80MPH TO 55MPH IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. AFTER TOUCHING THE GAS TO TRY TO MAINTAIN SPEEDS, CAR SUDDENLY SHIFTS INTO A NEUTRAL POSITION PUSHING ENGINE TO RED-LINE, THEN SHIFT INTO 5TH GEAR ROUGHLY. THE VEHICLE FROM THIS POINT ON, HAD ISSUES SHIFTING INTO 3RD AND 5TH GEARS. THIS CAR HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO THIS DATE. I HAD THE CAR SERVICED AND COMPLETELY CHECKED OUT BY A MECHANIC FOR ANY MECHANICAL ISSUES A FEW DAYS PRIOR TO THIS TRIP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WHO FIXED TWO SEPARATE TRANSMISSION PLATES AND REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION MODULE. I WAS GUARANTEED BY THE REPAIR SHOP MANAGER THAT I WOULD HAVE NO FURTHER ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION. LITTLE DID I KNOW, I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT CONVERSATION IN WRITING. I CONTINUED TO HAVE HARD SHIFTS AFTER THE REPAIR, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT'S THE TRANSMISSION MODULE SENSING HOW I DROVE. LESS THAN ONE WEEK LATER, TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAILED, LEAVING MY WIFE STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE VEHICLE UNABLE TO NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR, FORCING ME TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO BRING IT TO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME I HAVE TO REPLACED THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION, ALL AT MY COST. AFTER PAYING FOR THE PLATES AND MODULE TO BE REPLACED LESS THAN A WEEK PRIOR, NOW THEY WANT TO AGAIN REPLACED THOSE PARTS WITH A COMPLETELY NEW TRANSMISSION. IF I WERE BEING FOLLOWED TOO CLOSELY BY ANOTHER CAR OR SEMI ON THE INTERSTATE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED. IF THAT WERE THE CASE- THERE WOULDN'T BE A COMPLAINT, BUT A LAWSUIT. I HAVE AN 08' ENCLAVE AND I LIVE IN WISCONSIN, TODAY I STARTED MY VEHICLE AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE AND ABOUT 2-3 MINUTES INTO THE RIDE, THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO JERK. THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE 7-YEAR-OLD CHILD SITTING THERE WERE LEFT EXPOSED TO THE THREAT OF IMPACT BY FAST-APPROACHING TRAFFIC. AFTER ABOUT 2 SECONDS, THE ENGINE ACCELERATED AND WE WERE ABLE TO LEAVE THE INTERSECTION MOMENTS BEFORE ON-COMING TRAFFIC ARRIVED. THE SECOND EVENT OCCURRED TWO DAYS LATER. TRAVELING 45-50 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE SLIPPED GEARS AND WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE RETURNED HOME AT SLOW SPEED. IN THE DRIVEWAY, WE PUT THE CAR IN PARK, THEN IN DRIVE AND REVERSE. IT BARELY MOVED IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE NEXT DAY, WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT TO THE NEARBY DEALERSHIP. IT SHIFTED GEARS ON THE WAY, BUT THE WARNING LIGHT STAYED ON. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED US THAT THE WAVE PLATE IS BROKEN AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION MUST BE REPLACED. WE TRIED CONTACTING GM CUSTOMER SERVICE BUT RECEIVED NOTHING MORE THAN A RECORDED MESSAGE ASKING US TO HOLD ON THE LINE. WE HELD FOR OVER ONE HOUR AND RECEIVED NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. A REVIEW OF MANY WEBSITE POSTINGS REVEALS A WIDESPREAD FAILURE OF THE ENCLAVE WAVE PLATE AND TRANSMISSION, THAT GM IS FULLY AWARE OF IT AND HAS TAKEN NO STEPS TO ADDRESS IT OR TO ENSURE OF THE SAFETY OF THE THOUSANDS OF ENCLAVE OWNERS AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. FAILING ANY ACCOUNTABILITY BY GM, WE INSIST THAT NHTSA TAKE ACTION ON THIS WIDESPREAD SAFETY HAZARD AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

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
