On three occasions, when driving at night, both headlights suddenly went out. The next day the headlights were working normally. The dealer's service department could not find anything wrong. Later, we found out there was a "Safety Recall" (#14291),but it expired one year before our car developed the problem. We have contacted the dealership and Buick, neither one will help us. They expect us to pay for the replacement of the defective part (Headlamp Driver Module).
My vehicle has been parked for the better of about two years due to head lamp failure and engine shutting off without warning at any particular time. Steps were made to fix the issue but the problem continues still to this day.
The contact owns a 2008 Buick LaCrosse. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the headlights failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the headlamps had failed. The headlamps were replaced and the failure was remedied however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V519000 (Exterior Lighting). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 41,000.

THE DRIVERS SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT KEEPS GOING OUT. I DID LOOK UP ANY RECALLS, WHICH THERE WAS FOR THIS, BUT IT SHOWS THAT IT WAS FIXED. WE DIDN'T HAVE AN ISSUES FOR THE FIRST 9 MONTHS AND HAVE NOW REPLACED THE BULB SEVERAL TIMES. I AM CONCERNED THAT IT IS HAPPENING WHILE MY DAUGHTER IS DRIVING THIS AT NIGHT IN A RURAL AREA WITH A LOT OF DEER AND OTHER ANIMALS RUNNING INTO THE ROADS.

THE HDM FAILED LEAVING ME WITH ONLY HIGH BEAMS, HAVE BEE TOLD THEY ARE NOT UNDER RECALL. SHAMROCK SERVICE CENTER, SPENT 1 AND 1/2 HRS DIAGNOSING AND FOUND NO RECALL. MANY OTHER MODELS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I AM RETIRED AND CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR. WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME. WHEN I TURNED ON THE LIGHTS TO GO HOME LAST WEEK, THERE WERE NO LIGHTS BUT HIGH BEAMS. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST BULBS, SO I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. MY WIFE CALLED ANOTHER AREA BUICK DEALER AND RECIEVED THE SAME REPLY..SHE WAS ABLE TO GET A HOLD OF G.M. AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WOULD GET BACK TO US.. WE NEVER R GOT ANY RECALL NOTICE FROM G.M. I HAD TO PRINT ALL THE FORMS FROM THE NHTSA WEB SITE.. SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR LAW SUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN AFTER SOMETHING REALLY BAD HAPPENS (IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME). IN JANUARY OF 2015 WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM GM CONCERNING THE HEADLIGHT DRIVER MODULE (GM SAFETY RECALL 14291). WE CALLED THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES TO BE TOLD THEY WERE WAITING FOR PARTS. WE BEGAN EXPERIENCING A "HEADLIGHTS RECOMMENDED" SIGNAL SEVERAL TIMES IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, BUT LIVED WITH IT. WHEN I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL IN OCTOBER RECOVERING FROM CANCER SURGERY MY WIFE EXPERIENCED A HEADLIGHT FAILURE WHEN DRIVING HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. A NEIGHBOR TOOK THE CAR TO THE BUICK DEALER AND THEY INSTALLED A RELAY, PART #15016745. WE THEN NOTICED THAT THE LEFT FRONT HEADLIGHT AND THE RIGHT REAR TAILIGHT WERE NOT LIT. AS SOON AS I WAS CLEARED TO DRIVE I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY INSISTED THAT IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN THEIR FAULT, THAT IT WAS JUST A COINCIDENCE THAT IT HAPPENED AT THAT TIME. I PAID THE $68.93 FOR NEW BULBS. TODAY I LOOKED AT THE WEBSITE, WWW.MYGM.COM/RECALLS AND IT SAID THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS PENDING FOR OUR VEHICLE. WHEN I CALLED THE TELEPHONE NUMBER GIVEN ON THAT WEBPAGE, THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THAT WAS A MISTAKE, BUT HE COULD NOT FIND ANY INFORMATION ON WHEN THEY WOULD HAVE PARTS AVAILABLE OR WHY THE WEBSITE DENIED THERE WAS A RECALL. THIS SEEMS TO ME TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO THE IGNITION SWITCH ISSUE WHERE GM'S STRATEGY WAS TO IGNORE THE PROBLEM, HOPING IT WOULD GO AWAY.

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM STORE MY WIFE AND I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING THREE BLOCKS FROM HOME. WE GOT HOME AND I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND THE RELAY/FUSE BLOCK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS HOT AND SLIGHTLY SMOLDERING. I WAITED A WHILE AND THE POPPED OFF THE FUSE BLOCK COVER AND SAW THE HDM MODULE (ACCORDING TO THE DIAGRAM IN THE MANUAL) HAD MELTED AND FUSED TO THE BLOCK. THE MELTING AND BURNING HAD ALSO AFFECTED THE SURROUNDING RELAYS AND FUSES. I IMMEDIATELY DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND SCRAPED AWAY THE BURNT, FUSED PORTION OF THE HDM RELAY AND VISUALLY CHECKED THE FUSES WHICH WERE SINGED OR PARTIALLY MELTED AND REPLACED THE BAD ONES. I DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO CHECK THE RELAYS WITH. MY WIFE IS ON OXYGEN 24-7 AND HAD A TANK IN THE PASSENGER FRONT WITH HER AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WHICH, IF A FIRE HAD SPREAD, COULD HAVE BECOME A CATASTROPHIC INCIDENT. AFTER CLEANING OUT THE BURNT PORTION OF THE FUSE BOX OF CHARRED REMAINS FROM THE HDM MODULE, I RE-CONNECTED THE BATTERY CABLES AND WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT WORK AND SOME GAUGES APPEAR TO BE ERRATIC IN THEIR READINGS ( FUEL TANK AND MILEAGE). I THEN GOT ONLINE AND FOUND MANY 2006 THRU 2011 BUICK'S HAVE REPORTED THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM BUT NO RECALL ( TO MY KNOWLEDGE) HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY CATASTROPHIC ISSUE INHERENT IN GM AND SPECIFICALLY BUICK PRODUCTS. ETC. THE CAR IS COMPLETELY SEIZED UP. INSPECTION WILL DISCLOSE THAT BATTERY, INCLUDING BRAND NEW BATTERY, IS DEAD ( NO VOLTAGE WHATSOEVER). ONLY WAY TO RESTART VEHICLE IS TO RECHARGE BATTERY. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES OVER SPAN OF 9 TO 10 MONTHS. WHEN BATTERY IS RECHARGED, VEHICLE WILL OPERATE FOR MONTHS UNTIL IT IS DEAD AGAIN. SOMETHING IS DRAINING THE BATTERY, BUT THERE NO LOGICAL EXPLANATION; NOTHING SUCH AS RADIO, LIGHTS, ETC., IS BEING LEFT ON. SOME AUTO REPAIR PEOPLE BELIEVE THERE IS A SHORT IN THE CAR'S WIRING HARNESS; OTHERS BELIEVE THE DEFECTIVE IGNITION SYSTEM IS AT FAULT. *JS

UNDERHOOD FUSE BLOCK CAUGHT ON FIRE FROM THE HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY #35 MELTING DOWN. HEADLIGHTS WENT OFF AND THE BATTERY STARTED DRAINING. PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF THE CAR, AND OPENED THE HOOD TO DISCOVER THAT THE #35 MICRO-RELAY WAS ARCING AND HAD MELTED ITSELF TO MICRO-RELAYS #44 WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND #38 AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR. BOTH WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND AIR CONDITIONER WAS OFF AT THE TIME. EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS OFF THE RELAY CONTINUED TO ARC AND WAS MELTING THE UNDERHOOD FUSE BLOCK. GRABBED AN INSULATED SET OF PLIERS AND PULLED THE #35 MICRO-RELAY (THE #44 AND #38 RELAY CAME OUT AT THE SAME TIME). ARCING STOPPED WITH THE MICRO-RELAYS REMOVED. I HAVE FILED A PREVIOUS REPORT ON THE #35 HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY, BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED OFF THE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS WHILE I WAS DRIVING, AT NIGHT, ON THE HIGHWAY. TURNING THE LIGHT SWITCH TO MANUAL-ON DID NOT TURN THE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS BACK ON. I HAD THE #35 HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY REPLACED AND IT TOO PROVED TO BE DEFECTIVE. AFTER JUST A FEW MONTHS, IT STARTED TURNING ON THE HEADLIGHTS ABOUT 10 MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED-OFF. HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE JUMP STARTED, REPLACED THE BATTERY, AND REPLACED THE #35 HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY, YET AGAIN. THE 3RD #35 HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY, CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL FIRE, COSTING ME OVER $700 TO REPAIR. APPARENTLY THERE IS NO FUSE TO PREVENT THE MELT-DOWN OF THE MICRO-RELAYS. THERE IS NO CAUTION, AND NO WARNING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL, TO ADVISE THE USER ABOUT WHAT TO DO IN THE CASE OF THE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY GOING OFF. THERE IS NO PROTECTION AGAINST AN ELECTRICAL FIRE BEING CAUSED BY THE #35 HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE MICRO-RELAY, OR ANY OTHER RELAY FROM STARTING AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. *TR

HEADLIGHTS WENT OFF WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH IN THE DARK AND NO NEARBY LIGHT SOURCES WERE PRESENT. TURNED HEADLIGHT CONTROL TO MANUAL AND STILL NO HEADLIGHTS. STOPPED VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING BUT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE STILL WORKING. TURNED OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING, THE FAN, THE RADIO, AND STILL NO HEADLIGHTS. TURNED CAR OFF AND BACK ON, STILL NO HEADLIGHTS. TURNED CAR OFF AGAIN AND WAITED 5 MINUTES AND RESTARTED CAR AND HEADLIGHTS CAME ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED 2 TIMES NOW, 3 MONTHS APART. DEALERSHIP DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM THE 1ST TIME I TALKED TO THEM, BUT ADMITS NOW THAT SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE HAVE ALSO TRIED TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING ON A CURVE, I WOULD MOST LIKELY BE DEAD NOW AND THEY WOULD BE GUESSING WHY I RAN OFF THE ROAD (USER ERROR), WHEN THEY KNOW THERE IS A DEFECT IN DESIGN. LIGHT SWITCH ON MANUAL SHOULD BYPASS EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE FUSE. *TR
