CAN"T STOP AN OIL LEAK. AFRAID IT MIGHT GET HOT AND CATCH ON FIRE!!! *DT

I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THE ELEVATED TEMPERATURE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON FEBRUARY 26, 2015. IN THE SAFETY RECALL NOTICE I WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT BRP DEALERSHIP, WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY. I WAS TOLD THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER AND TO CALL BACK IN APRIL I CONTACTED THEM AGAIN IN APRIL, WAS TOLD THE STATES WITH THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE WAS FIRST CALL BACK IN A MONTH. I CALL IN MAY, WAS TOLD AGAIN, THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE. CALLED BACK IN JUNE WAS TOLD THE TOOL TO FIX THE PROBLEM WAS NOT AVAILABLE. MEANWHILE IN OHIO THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE, AND THIS STILL HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. I CONTACTED BRP IN CANADA, NO RESPONSE. THIS CAN AM WAS PURCHASED NEW OFF THE SHOW ROOM FLOOR IN 2014, AND I AM ADVISED TO NOT RIDE IT WHEN ITS HOT, OR IN TRAFFIC. I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER RIGHT NOW, I PURCHASED THE BIKE TO ENJOY THE SUMMER MONTHS, RIDE WITH THE LEGION RIDERS AND IT SITS IN THE GARAGE.
WHILE RIDING MY CAN AM SPYDER FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES, I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT FOR OVER A MINUTE. I THEN BEGAN TO FEEL EXCESSIVE HEAT FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BIKE, WHERE MY LOWER THIGH AND KNEE TOUCHES THE PANEL OF THE BIKE. I ALSO BEGAN TO SMELL A STRONG ODOR OF BURNING PLASTIC (SORT OF LIKE WHEN A RESISTER OR COMPUTER CHIP GETS FRIED). I IMMEDIATELY DROVE HOME WHERE I CHECKED THE BIKE FOR BURNT PLASTIC. I DID NOT NOTICE ANY BURNT PLASTIC, HOWEVER I DID NOT REMOVE ANY OF THE PANELS TO CHECK UNDERNEATH THEM. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 77F WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WILL MELT COMPONENTS UNDERNEATH THE PANELS OR START A FIRE. THE PANEL WAS VERY HOT TO THE TOUCH. I DID RECEIVE A VERY SLIGHT BURN TO MY THIGH AREA AFTER THE RIDE.

WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A RECALL FIX THAT WAS INFORMED BY BRP WOULD BE IN MAY 2015. THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA WE WERE TOLD BY BRPCARE THAT THE FIX WAS READY AND SUPPLIED PICTURES. WE HAVE SCHEDULED THE WORK BUT AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE FIX AS IT CHANGES THE APPEARANCE OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I CALLED NHTSA I WAS INFORMED THAT SHE COULD NOT FIND ANY INFORMATION THAT THIS FIX WAS APPROVED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CAN-AM SPYDER RT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE MOTORCYCLE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT AND STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED ON TWO OTHER OCCASIONS. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING TO SLOW WHICH CAUSED THE MOTORCYCLE TO OVERHEAT. THE COMPUTER WAS REPROGRAMMED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V095000 (ENGINE), HOWEVER THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 900.

THIS WAS AN UNREASONABLE TIMEFRAME BECAUSE THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER HAD NO INTERIM REPAIR TO APPROVE FOR THE AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER DID NOT PROVIDE A SPECIFIC DATE WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ESTIMATED DATE FOR WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD RECEIVE THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.

TO BRP CAN AM SPYDER 2013 CAN AM SPYDER RT LIMITED 9-29-2014 I HAVE A BRAND NEW CAN AM SPYDER RT LIMITED STOPPED ON ME 2 TIMES IN FIRST GEAR WITH 120 MILES. NEXT THIS BIKE STOPPED ON ME AGAIN 11 TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND. THIS BIKE SHUTS OFF AT EVERY LIGHT I STOP AT. WHICH IS DANGEROUS. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED AT LEAST 2 TIMES .. I TOLD MY SALESMAN THAT I HAVE A STRONG GAS SMELL IN MY GARAGE .I TOOK BIKE AND DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO LEAVE OVERNIGHT DUE TO STRONG GAS SMELL AND SHUTTING OFF. MY BIKE WAS READY FOR PICK UP THE NEXT DAY. I WAS TOLD THE CANISTER WAS OK AND THE LOUD FUEL SMELL SHOULD BE GONE .I WAS ADVISED THAT ALL RECALLS FOR THIS MODEL HAVE BE DONE. I WAS TOLD DEALER DID A GAS TREATMENT AND WAS ADVISED BIKE IS A 2013 MODEL WHICH HAD GAS SITTING IN TANK FOR A LONG TIME . I WAS ASK IF I TOP OFF GAS AND I TOLD THE DEALER NO! I READ ALL THE BOOKLET AND WATCH VIDEO PERTAINING TO THIS BIKE ALONG WITH SIGNING UP FOR SPYDERLOVER.COM. . I KNOW ALL BIKE HAVE BREAK IN PERIODS, BUT THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND SURELY NOT SAFE. I WAS INFORMED TO JUST RIDE MY BIKE AND TO REV THE ENGINE WHEN IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S GOING TO SHUT OFF. NOW WITH 500 MILES THE FUEL SMELL IS EVEN STRONGER AND I HAVE LOST COUNT ON HOW MANY TIMES IT SHUTS OFF IN 1ST GEAR AT A LIGHT OR JUST SITTING IN THE GARAGE. I CALL THE DEALER AGAIN. THEY INFORMED ME THAT AFTER 1,000 TO 1,500 MILES THESE ISSUES SHOULD GO AWAY AFTER THE 600 SERVICE. NOW, . THE REASON FOR THIS LETTER IS THAT THIS BIKE IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE OF THE STRONG FUEL SMELL AND I DON'T WANT TO BE REAR ENDED DUE TO BIKE SHUTTING OFF AT EVERY LIGHT. I AM ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE TO PREVENT THE ISSUE OF A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT OR A FIRE. NOW WITH 1,300 MILES AND SERVICED AT THE DEALER THE GAS SMELL HAS GOTTEN WORSE. HAVE OWNED RT LIMITED FOR LESS THAN ONE YEAR WITH HEAT ISSUES. WHILE RETURNING FROM EVENT IN NORTH CAROLINA BIKE RAN FINE IN THE COOLER TEMPERATURES. AS SOON AS RETURNED TO THE SOUTH, ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN HOT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND OFF AS WELL AS BIKE CHUGGING AND RUNNING ROUGHLY. BIKE SHUTTING DOWN AND HAD TO LET COOL OFF BEFORE WOULD RESTART. HAVE HAD EXTREME HEAT ISSUES SINCE PURCHASING BIKE ESPECIALLY IN HOTTER MONTHS HERE IN HOUSTON AREA. HAVE HAD UPDATES DONE PER BRP RECOMMENDATIONS TO NO SUCCESS. BIKE IS NOT SAFE AND FEAR RIDING ANY LENGTH OF TIME OR PROLONGED DISTANCE. WHEN PARKED IN GARAGE AFTER RIDING FIND THERE IS A STRONG GAS SMELL IN THE GARAGE. FOR THIS REASON USUALLY LEAVE BIKE IN YARD FOR UPTO 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO PUTTING GARAGE FOR FEAR OF FIRE CONSUMING HOME. NOT SURE WHAT THIS REPORT WILL DO BUT FEEL LIKE SOMEONE SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF HOW UNSAFE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS THESE VEHICLES ARE. DEALERS ARE AT A LOSS FOR WHAT TO DO AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED SAME PROBLEMS WITH A 2013 ST LIMITED MODEL THAT WAS TRADED DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE AND EXTREME HEAT ISSUE MELTING PARTS. I WAS RIDING ON HIGHWAY 291 IN LEES SUMMIT MO TRAVELING AT 65 MPH. THE DAILY TEMP WAS BETWEEN 92 - 95 DEGREES. THE FAN WAS BLOWING THE HOT AIR OUT FROM THE BIKES RADIATOR AREA AND WITH THE BIKE BEING IN MOTION THE HOT AIR WAS BEING ROUTED ONTO MY RIGHT LEG AND I COULD FEEL MY LEG GETTING HOT TO THE POINT THAT I WAS UNABLE TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE FOOT PEG FOR LONGER THAN 10-15 SECONDS AFTER WHICH, I NEEDED TO KEEP SHIFTING THE LOCATION OF MY FOOT ON THE FOOT PEG. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT SIDE PANELS AND THE AIR COMING FROM UNDER THE SEAT WAS UNCOMFORTABLY HOT. ALSO WHEN REFUELING THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS TOO HOT TO TOUCH. DURING THE FIRST LONG TRIP ON THIS BIKE (WEEKEND OF OCT 25-26) FROM GRAIN VALLEY MO TO EUREKA SPRINGS AR (540 MILES ROUND TRIP). TEMPS WERE IN THE 70'S DURING THE TRIP TO AR AND WHEN REFUELING I NOTICED THAT THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS OVERLY WARM. THE RETURN TRIP, WITH TEMPS IN THE MID 80S, THE HEAT ON MY RIGHT LEG WAS BECOMING UNCOMFORTABLE, THE RIGHT SIDE PANELS WERE HOT AND THE HEAT UNDER THE SEAT WAS OVERLY WARM. REFUELING, THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS ALMOST TOO HOT TO TOUCH. *TR

I TOOK A TRIP TO GEORGIA ON OCTOBER 24, , AND ON SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 26, WHEN I STARTED THE SPYDER TO LEAVE, IT BEGAN TO STALL AT IDLE, IT CUT OFF REPEATEDLY, AND IDLED ROUGH. IT WOULDN'T MAINTAIN THE NORMAL IDLE RANGE OF 1200-1300 RPM. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT OFF, AND AS I RODE, THE IDLE WAS ROUGH FOR A FEW MILES, BUT AFTER I GOT IT ON THE FREEWAY, IT SEEMED OKAY. ONCE AGAIN, THE HEAT ISSUE AND FUEL SMELLS BECAME EVIDENT AS I RODE BACK TO ALABAMA, AND THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE ROSE. IT SEEMS THAT ANY OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES ABOVE 70 DEGREES AND THE HEAT FROM THE VEHICLE BECOMES WORSE WITH THE RESULTING FUEL SMELL AND A LOT OF HEAT COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND FUEL TANK WHEN GOING TO FILL UP. ON FRIDAY, 24 OCTOBER 2014I RODE THE SPYDER TO THE DEALER, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN, [XXX], CONNECTED IT TO THE B.U.D.S. COMPUTER. I AM ALSO SENDING [XXX]. A COURTESY COPY OF THIS EMAIL. THE COMPUTER OBTAINED INFORMATION THAT POINTED TO A PROBLEM WITH THE PURGE VALVE AND VAPOR RECOVERY CANISTER, AS WELL AS A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM). THIS IS IN ADDITION TO HEAT AND GAS VAPOR ISSUES WHEN THE AMBIENT OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS 75 DEGREES AND ABOVE. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON 27 OCTOBER 2014, I TOOK THE SPYDER ON A RIDE YESTERDAY OF ABOUT 30 MILES ON LOCAL ROADS. AFTER I RETURNED HOME AND SHUT OFF THE SPYDER BRIEFLY TO OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR, IT DIDN'T WANT TO START. THE STARTER TURNED THE MOTOR OVER, BUT THE MOTOR WOULD NOT START. AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET IT STARTED. I AM FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN OUT ON THE ROAD. THE SPYDER HAD A STRONG GAS VAPOR SMELL, WHICH WAS STILL EVIDENT THE MORNING IN MY GARAGE. I CHECKED THE SPYDER THIS MORNING AND IT STARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. I SUSPECT THE ECM AND PURGE VALVE CODES THAT THE B.U.D.S. COMPUTER DETECTED ARE TO BLAME, BUT THE HEAT ISSUE IS SOMETHING THAT BRP NEEDS TO ADDRESS. I, ALONG WITH MANY OWNERS OF THE CAN-AM SPYDER, HAVE CONCERNS WITH SAFETY AND HEAT ISSUES. I WILL SAY THAT I ENJOY THE SPYDER, BUT I WOULD ENJOY IT FAR MORE IF MY CONCERNS WITH SAFETY AND RELIABILITY ARE ADDRESSED. MY SPYDER IS STILL UNDER BRP ORIGINAL WARRANTY, AND I'D LIKE THESE PROBLEMS TO BE ADDRESSED BY BRP UNDER THOSE TERMS AND NOT AT ADDITIONAL COST TO ME, BECAUSE THE SPYDER IS NOT INEXPENSIVE TO BUY. I PURCHASED THIS WHEN THERE WAS A LARGE REBATE FOR BUYING THE 2013 SPYDERS. I HAVE BEEN PLAGUED WITH A HOT SEAT AND RIGHT FOOT SINCE THE BEGINNING. I WIND UP HAVING TO MOVE MY RIGHT FOOT TO THE REAR PASSENGER FLOOR BOARD TO ESCAPE THE HEAT AND THERE ARE TIMES WHERE MY INNER THIGHS ARE BURNED WHERE THE HEAT IS COMING UP AROUND THE SEAT. I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS BIKE AND WILL BE HAVING THIS DONE AS SOON AS THEY GET THE PARTS IN BUT FROM READING INFORMATION ON A BLOG THAT I SUBSCRIBED TO, IT PROBABLY WON'T HELP. AFTER BUYING MY SPYDER I NOTICED EXCESSIVE HEAT COMING FROM THE ENGINE AREA UNDER MY SEAT. AT TIMES ITS SO HOT THAT I CAN BARELY TOUCH MY GAS CAP WITH IS LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW TIME THAT AFTER RIDING FOR A EXTENDED PERIOD AND STOPPING THE BIKE I'VE NOTICED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE. I'VE CHECKED FOR FUEL LEAKS AND FOUND NONE, AND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO COMPLAIN. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY THE FUEL TANK OVER PRESSURIZING BECAUSE OF THE HEAT AND VENTING TO THE AIR. I WAS ADVISED TO PARK THE BIKE OUT SIDE UNTIL IT COOLED DOWN BEFORE BRINGING IT INTO THE GARAGE. WHILE RIDING THE HEAT COMING UP FROM UNDER THE SEAT IS REALLY BAD, MAKING RIDING NOT MUCH FUN. I'VE CALLED BRP TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT AS OF YET HEARD ANY THING BACK FROM THEM. I'VE READ THAT SEVERAL SPYDER'S HAVE CAUGHT FIRE, AND STILL NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. SO ON JUNE 23RD I LEFT IT AT DEALERS AND BRP INFORMED THEM TO APPLY MORE HEAT TAPE AND REPLACE THE SEAT,WHICH WAS DONE. I PICKED IT UP ON JULY 9 THE AND RODE IT HOME AND GOT BURNED AND IT REGISTERED 150 AFTER A 20 MINUTE RIDE AND THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS MID 70'S. I ROAD MY RT FROM MARYLAND TO MYRTLE BEACH SC. ON THE WAY THERE THE BIKE WAS HEATING UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE BURNING MY PASSENGER AND MY LEG. ONCE I GOT THERE I TOOK THE BIKE TO A BRP DEALERSHIP TO GET AN OIL CHANGE AND HAD TO PAY $335. I ASKED THEM TO DO A CHECK UP BECAUSE MY BREAKS WERE SQEAKING AND THERE WAS HOT AIR COMING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE AND THAT THE CONTROLS FOR THE PASSENGER DO NOT WORK . WHEN I WENT TO PICK MY BIKE UP THEY TOLD ME I HAD SEVERAL RECALLS ON MY BIKE, AND THE SWITCH WAS BAD. I SAID I JUST GOT IT MAY 17, 2014 AND THEY SAID NONE OF THE RECALLS WERE DONE. THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT TELL ME THERE WERE RECALLS ON THE RT. I THINK THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE TO TELL CUSTOMERS THAT THERE ARE RECALLS. I DID NOT RECEIVE AND RECALL NOTIFICATION IN THE MAIL EITHER. I DID CONTACT A BRP DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WILL HAVE TO KEEP MY BIKE FOR 1 - 2 WEEKS TO FIND OUT WHAT THE RECALLS ARE. E ARE 25 COMPLAINTS AND NO INVESTIGATIONS I THINK NHTSA NEED TO DO SOME INVESTIGATIONS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS BADLY INJURED. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ HAD BASICALLY HAPPENED TO ME TOO. ADDITIONALLY, I CAN SMELL GAS FUMES WHEN RIDING, AND THE FUMES ARE OVERPOWERING WHEN PARKING THE BIKE AFTER RIDING. I LEAVE THE BIKE OUTSIDE MY GARAGE UNTIL THE FUMES DISSIPATE, AS I FEEL THAT IT DANGEROUS TO PARK IN THE GARAGE WITH THE OVERPOWERING GAS FUMES. BRP AND THE DEALERS ARE AWARE OF THESE PROBLEMS, AND CAN OFFER NO FIX FOR THEM. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED IN THE 2014 MODELS, SO OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A WAY TO REMEDY THEM. WHENEVER I AM ASKED HOW I LIKE THE BIKE, I TELL PEOPLE THAT THE GAS MILEAGE IS HORRENDOUS, THE HEAT PROBLEM IS UNCOMFORTABLE, AND THE GAS FUMES ARE UNBEARABLE AND DANGEROUS. AS SOME OF YOU MIGHT ALREADY KNOW, TODAY TRANSPORT CANADA PUBLISHED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FROM BRP ON ALL 2013 CAN-AM SPYDER RT AND ST SERIES ROADSTERS. BRP HAS PROPOSED A SOLUTION TO THE ISSUE RAISED BY THE RECALL; THIS RECALL NOTIFICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES WITHIN CANADA BY TRANSPORT CANADA. I JUST RETURNED FROM A 300 MILE TRIP TODAY ON MY 2013 CAN-AM SPYDER RT-S AND HEARD ABOUT THE CANADIAN RECALL. I CHECKED THE SECONDARY MASTER CYLINDER AND DISCOVERED THE PLASTIC TOP PIECE HAD BEGUN TO MELT. IT IS VERY CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST PIPE. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER THAT THERE WAS A HEAT ISSUES AND WAS TOLD THE HEAT WAS NORMAL. I HAVE ALSO HAD TO USE A GLOVE TO REMOVE THE GAS CAP AS IT WILL BURN YOUR FINGERS AFTER RIDING FOR ANY DISTANCE. YOU CAN ALSO HEAR THE GAS BOILING IN THE TANK WHEN REFUELING.
