EXCESS HEAT HAS MELTED THE BRAKE LINE TWICE, MASTER CYL. MELTED, BRAKS GET SOFT AND INHIBIT STOPPING POWER, ELECTRICAL WIRINGIS DEGRADING FROM EXCESS HEAT, GAS TANL GET SO HOT THE GAS STARTS TO BOIL, PANELS ARE MELTING AND WARPING FROM EXCESS HEAT. THE UNIT HAS BEEN DECLARED UN SAFE TO RIDE. BRP REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUES, ALL RECALLS AND UPGRADES HAVE BEEN DONE AND THE PROBLEM IS JUST GETTING WORST, BRP, WILL NOT FIX ONLY OFFERS TO HIDE THE COMETIC DAMAGE

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CAN-AM SPYDER RT. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V095000 (ENGINE); HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURER'S REMEDY WAS INCOMPLETE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD BE REPLACING THE BODY PANEL WITH NEW IMPROVED BODY PANELS AND AN UPGRADED FUEL SYSTEM KIT. THE CONTACT RECEIVED TEMPLATES TO USE TO CUT OUT PIECES OF THE BODY PANEL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THIS WAS THE ONLY AVAILABLE REPAIR FOR THE ISSUE. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A RECALL FIX THAT WAS INFORMED BY BRP WOULD BE IN MAY 2015. THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA WE WERE TOLD BY BRPCARE THAT THE FIX WAS READY AND SUPPLIED PICTURES. WE HAVE SCHEDULED THE WORK BUT AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE FIX AS IT CHANGES THE APPEARANCE OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I CALLED NHTSA I WAS INFORMED THAT SHE COULD NOT FIND ANY INFORMATION THAT THIS FIX WAS APPROVED. *TR
WE WERE PART OF A NATIONAL BIKE CLUB RIDE TO A BEACH RESORT ACCOMPANIED BY APPROXIMATELY 300 RIDERS. WHEN WE DEPARTED ABOUT 7 AM, TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE LOW 70'S. THE ROUTE WAS MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND WE MAINTAINED AN AVERAGE SPEED OF ABOUT 50, 60 MPH. AFTER JUST OVER ONE HOUR WE ARRIVED AT THE RESORT WHERE WE ALL MOVED TO A LARGE GRAVEL PARKING AREA NEAR THE BEACH. WITHIN SECONDS AFTER I SHUT DOWN AND DISMOUNTED, GREY SMOKE STARTED SEEPING UP BETWEEN THE BODY PANELS WHICH QUICKLY TURNED INTO BLACK SMOKE SMELLING STRONGLY OF BURNING INSULATION. IN LESS THAN A MINUTE FIRE BROKE OUT FROM THE FRONT TOP VENTS AND BURNED THROUGH THE UPPER PLASTIC BODY PANELS EXTENDING MORE THAN 3 FEET INTO THE AIR. A FAST THINKING MEMBER RUSHED UP WITH A CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND STARTED EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE THAT BY THEN FLOWED OUT FROM UNDER THE BIKE AN THREATENED BIKES PARKED NEARBY. FORTUNATELY, THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT WITHIN 2 OR 3 MINUTES WITH NO DAMAGE TO OTHER PROPERTY OR ANY INJURIES. AT NO TIME DURING THE RIDE OR AT ANY OTHER TIME, EVEN WHEN AMBIENT TEMPERATURES WERE OVER 80 DID THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE REGISTER MORE THAN NORMAL. IT WASN'T UNTIL THE DAY AFTER THE INCIDENT THAT A FRIEND INFORMED ME THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THE YEAR & MODEL WARNING OF POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD. ALSO, UPON CLOSE INSPECTION IT WAS NOTED THAT ONE OF THE FUEL LINES WAS BURNED, AND WAS LEAKING. *TR

ON 26 MARCH 2015 I RODE HOME AFTER WORK OF APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES. THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE THIS DAY WAS APPROXIMATELY 85 DEGREES AS A HIGH THAT DAY. UPON ARRIVING HOME, I LEFT MY 2013 CAN AM SPYDER RT SE-5 OUT SIDE THE GARAGE AS DIRECTED BY THE INTERIM RECALL NOTICE. I GOT OFF MY SPYDER AND NOTICED A STRANGE SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE SEAT. I REMOVED MY HELMET AND LIFTED THE SEAT. THE SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE GAS TANK. I REMOVED THE GAS CAP AND COULD SEE GAS BOILING IN THE TANK. I HAVE NOTICED STRONG GAS SMELLS AND REPORTED THAT EARLY, BUT NEVER HAVE I HAD GAS BOILING IN THE TANK. I PUT THE GAS CAP BACK ON AND PUT MY HELMET IN THE GARAGE. I REOPENED THE GAS CAP IT WAS STILL BOILING AND WAS GOING TO FILM THIS, BUT WAS FEARFUL SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN. I CONTACTED MY DEALER WHO RETURNED MY CALL THE NEXT DAY. HE RELATED THEY HAD EXPERIENCED THAT BEFORE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. THEY SAID IT WAS STILL SAFE TO RIDE AND TAKE THE APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS AND WE WOULD HAVE TO SEE HOW THE RECALL DESIGN DISSIPATES THE HEAT. I CONTACTED A SECOND DEALER WHO RELATED THEY CONTACTED BRP AND NO ONE HAS REPORTED OR DEALT WITH ISSUES LIKE THIS? THEY RECOMMENDED I TRANSPORT THE UNIT TO THEM APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS AWAY. I CALLED A THIRD DEALER AND WAS ADVISED OF THE PENDING RECALL. BOILING GAS IS SCARY IN MY BOOK, SINCE WHEN YOU ARE RIDING THE SPYDER YOU ARE RIDING VIRTUALLY ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK. THIS IS A BIT DISCOURAGING FOR THE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO PURCHASE THIS UNIT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V095000 (ENGINE) HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 700.

TO BRP CAN AM SPYDER 2013 CAN AM SPYDER RT LIMITED 9-29-2014 I HAVE A BRAND NEW CAN AM SPYDER RT LIMITED STOPPED ON ME 2 TIMES IN FIRST GEAR WITH 120 MILES. NEXT THIS BIKE STOPPED ON ME AGAIN 11 TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND. THIS BIKE SHUTS OFF AT EVERY LIGHT I STOP AT. WHICH IS DANGEROUS. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED AT LEAST 2 TIMES .. I TOLD MY SALESMAN THAT I HAVE A STRONG GAS SMELL IN MY GARAGE .I TOOK BIKE AND DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO LEAVE OVERNIGHT DUE TO STRONG GAS SMELL AND SHUTTING OFF. MY BIKE WAS READY FOR PICK UP THE NEXT DAY. I WAS TOLD THE CANISTER WAS OK AND THE LOUD FUEL SMELL SHOULD BE GONE .I WAS ADVISED THAT ALL RECALLS FOR THIS MODEL HAVE BE DONE. I WAS TOLD DEALER DID A GAS TREATMENT AND WAS ADVISED BIKE IS A 2013 MODEL WHICH HAD GAS SITTING IN TANK FOR A LONG TIME . I WAS ASK IF I TOP OFF GAS AND I TOLD THE DEALER NO! I READ ALL THE BOOKLET AND WATCH VIDEO PERTAINING TO THIS BIKE ALONG WITH SIGNING UP FOR SPYDERLOVER.COM. . I KNOW ALL BIKE HAVE BREAK IN PERIODS, BUT THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND SURELY NOT SAFE. I WAS INFORMED TO JUST RIDE MY BIKE AND TO REV THE ENGINE WHEN IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S GOING TO SHUT OFF. NOW WITH 500 MILES THE FUEL SMELL IS EVEN STRONGER AND I HAVE LOST COUNT ON HOW MANY TIMES IT SHUTS OFF IN 1ST GEAR AT A LIGHT OR JUST SITTING IN THE GARAGE. I CALL THE DEALER AGAIN. THEY INFORMED ME THAT AFTER 1,000 TO 1,500 MILES THESE ISSUES SHOULD GO AWAY AFTER THE 600 SERVICE. NOW, . THE REASON FOR THIS LETTER IS THAT THIS BIKE IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE OF THE STRONG FUEL SMELL AND I DON'T WANT TO BE REAR ENDED DUE TO BIKE SHUTTING OFF AT EVERY LIGHT. I AM ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE TO PREVENT THE ISSUE OF A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT OR A FIRE. NOW WITH 1,300 MILES AND SERVICED AT THE DEALER THE GAS SMELL HAS GOTTEN WORSE. PURCHASED MY 2013 CAN-AM SPYDER ON 03/05/14, IN SPRINGFIELD, MI. MY HOME ADDRESS IS NEW IBERIA, LA. I DROVE THE BIKE BACK HOME. MY FIRST FUEL STOP I WAS OVERWHELMED BY THE STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE AND I CAN SMELL GAS FUMES EVERY TIME I FUEL UP. AT EVERY FUELING I HAVE TO USE GLOVES OR A RAG TO PUT OVER THE GAS CAP TO UNSCREW IT BECAUSE IT IS SO HOT. THEN WHEN I TRY TO UNSCREW THE CAP IT JUST RATCHETS WITH OUT UNSCREWING IT. I HAVE SPENT AT LEAST 30 TO 45 MINUTES TRYING TO UNSCREW THE CAP AND AFTER TANK COOLS OFF THE GAS CAP RELEASES, THEN YOU CAN FUEL UP. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD TO PRY THE GAS CAP WITH A SCREW DRIVER TO REMOVE IT AND THEN YOU CAN HEAR THE FUEL BOILING IN THE TANK. I HAD 3 GAS CAPS FROM ANOTHER RECALL AND TRIED ALL 3 CAPS AND THEY DID THE SAME THING, JUST RATCHET AND NOT UNSCREW. WHILE TRAVELING I WAS IN PENSACOLA, FL AND COULD NOT REMOVE THE GAS CAP AND WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THERE AND THEY REPLACED THE GAS CAP AFTER IT COOLED OFF. THE NEXT DAY I HAD TO RE-FUEL AND THE CAP THEY JUST PUT ON WOULD NOT UNSCREW. THURSDAY OCTOBER 30, 2014, I HAD TO REFUEL AND COULD NOT OPEN THE FUEL TANK AND HAD TO PRY IT OPEN WITH A SCREW DRIVER TO PUT FUEL TO GET HOME. WHILE DOING SO THE CAP WAS SO TIGHT THAT THE TOP PORTION BROKE OFF LEAVING THE BOTTOM PORTION IN THE FUEL TANK NECK. IT GETS SO HOT MY RIGHT FOOT ACTUALLY BURNS FROM THE ENGINE HEAT. WHEN I WANT TO CRANK THE BIKE AFTER FUELING THE BIKE DOES NOT WANT TO CRANK. IT SPINS THE ENGINE FOR A LONG TIME BEFORE IT CRANKS AND THEN IT RUNS SO BAD, MISSING ETC., AND DIES OUT 2 OR 3 TIMES BEFORE I CAN TRAVEL. THEN WHEN I GET TO PLACES I HAVE TO STOP THE BIKE ENGINE DIES OUT WHILE COASTING OR TAKING OFF, LEAVING YOU IN AN INTERSECTION WITH NO POWER. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP TECH IN PENSACOLA WHAT CAUSED THAT AND HE ADVISED CAN-AM HASN'T FIGURED OUT WHY THAT HAPPENS JUST YET. *TR

RODE HOME AND NOTICED THAT THE FUEL SMELL WAS THE SAME. WHEN I CHECKED UNDER THE ROADSTER I FOUND FUEL DRIPPING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE ROADSTER. I CALLED DEALER AND WAS TOLD TO TOP OFF THE FUEL TANK BEFORE PUTTING VEHICLE IN GARAGE. DEALER SAID THAT THIS WAS NORMAL. 4600 MILE SERVICE AGAIN COMPLAINED OF EXTREME FUEL SMELL AFTER RIDES. ASKED DEALER ABOUT HOT HOT RIGHT FOOT WAS TOLD BY DEALER THIS WAS NORMAL AND THE ROADSTER WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. 9200 MILE SERVICE COMPLAINED OF EXTREME FUEL SMELL AND HEAT ON RIGHT FOOT, NO HEAT LEFT HAND GRIP, AND INTERMITTENT HEAT ON RIGHT HAND GRIP, WARPED RIGHT HAND CENTER BODY PANEL. WHEN SERVICE WAS COMPLETE I ASKED ABOUT NO HEAT ON HAND GRIPS. TECHNICIAN FOUND LOOSE CONNECTORS AT BOTH HAND GRIPS AND THAT THE CONNECTIONS COULD BE A PROBLEM IF THERE WERE GAS FUMES IN THE AREA. BODY PANEL ORDERED AND REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. TOLD BY DEALER THAT THE PANEL WAS BENT FROM FACTORY NOT HEAT. TECHNICIAN AND SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT AGREE AND BOTH SAID IT WAS CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE HEAT. *TR

AS SOON AS RETURNED TO THE SOUTH, ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN HOT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND OFF AS WELL AS BIKE CHUGGING AND RUNNING ROUGHLY. BIKE SHUTTING DOWN AND HAD TO LET COOL OFF BEFORE WOULD RESTART. HAVE HAD EXTREME HEAT ISSUES SINCE PURCHASING BIKE ESPECIALLY IN HOTTER MONTHS HERE IN HOUSTON AREA. HAVE HAD UPDATES DONE PER BRP RECOMMENDATIONS TO NO SUCCESS. BIKE IS NOT SAFE AND FEAR RIDING ANY LENGTH OF TIME OR PROLONGED DISTANCE. WHEN PARKED IN GARAGE AFTER RIDING FIND THERE IS A STRONG GAS SMELL IN THE GARAGE. FOR THIS REASON USUALLY LEAVE BIKE IN YARD FOR UPTO 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO PUTTING GARAGE FOR FEAR OF FIRE CONSUMING HOME. NOT SURE WHAT THIS REPORT WILL DO BUT FEEL LIKE SOMEONE SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF HOW UNSAFE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS THESE VEHICLES ARE. DEALERS ARE AT A LOSS FOR WHAT TO DO AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED SAME PROBLEMS WITH A 2013 ST LIMITED MODEL THAT WAS TRADED DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE AND EXTREME HEAT ISSUE MELTING PARTS. IN AUGUST OF 2013 I NOTICED THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAYING ON, REMOVED SIDE PANEL TO FINED THE WIRES MELTED AND SHORTED TOGETHER. I ALSO NOTICED THE PLASTIC ON THE MASTER CYLINDER SHOWED SIGNS OF MELTING AND OF GETTING HOT. I REPAIRED THE WIRES WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE ELECTRICAL TAPE. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM BRP IN SEPTEMBER FOR HEAT RELATED PROBLEMS. THE DEALER FOUND THE FUEL EVAPORATOR CANISTER ALMOST BURNED THROUGH, IT WAS REPLACED AND COVERED IT WITH TIN FOIL HEAT SHIELD. THE DEALER DID NOT THINK THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS MELTED BAD ENOUGH TO WARRANT CHANGING AND COVERED IT WITH TIN FOIL HEAT SHIELD. I HAD THEM TO LEAVE THE WIRING AS I HAD ALREADY REPAIRED IT. THE BAD FUEL SMELL CONTINUED WITH THE NEW FUEL EVAPORATOR CANISTER AND THE FUEL BOILS WHERE YOU CAN HEAR IT AFTER A RIDE. IF YOU LOOK UNDER THE SPYDER AFTER A RIDE YOU CAN SEE FUEL VAPORS SPEWING AND DRIPPING FROM THE VENT LINE, AND IT WILL CONTINUE FOR MAYBE AN HOUR OR LONGER. IT IS SOMETIMES HARD TO PUT FUEL IN BECAUSE IT MAKES THE GAS PUMP NOZZLE KEEP CUTTING OFF. *TR

I WAS RIDING ON HIGHWAY 291 IN LEES SUMMIT MO TRAVELING AT 65 MPH. THE DAILY TEMP WAS BETWEEN 92 - 95 DEGREES. THE FAN WAS BLOWING THE HOT AIR OUT FROM THE BIKES RADIATOR AREA AND WITH THE BIKE BEING IN MOTION THE HOT AIR WAS BEING ROUTED ONTO MY RIGHT LEG AND I COULD FEEL MY LEG GETTING HOT TO THE POINT THAT I WAS UNABLE TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE FOOT PEG FOR LONGER THAN 10-15 SECONDS AFTER WHICH, I NEEDED TO KEEP SHIFTING THE LOCATION OF MY FOOT ON THE FOOT PEG. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT SIDE PANELS AND THE AIR COMING FROM UNDER THE SEAT WAS UNCOMFORTABLY HOT. ALSO WHEN REFUELING THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS TOO HOT TO TOUCH. DURING THE FIRST LONG TRIP ON THIS BIKE (WEEKEND OF OCT 25-26) FROM GRAIN VALLEY MO TO EUREKA SPRINGS AR (540 MILES ROUND TRIP). TEMPS WERE IN THE 70'S DURING THE TRIP TO AR AND WHEN REFUELING I NOTICED THAT THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS OVERLY WARM. THE RETURN TRIP, WITH TEMPS IN THE MID 80S, THE HEAT ON MY RIGHT LEG WAS BECOMING UNCOMFORTABLE, THE RIGHT SIDE PANELS WERE HOT AND THE HEAT UNDER THE SEAT WAS OVERLY WARM. REFUELING, THE GAS TANK FILLER NECK WAS ALMOST TOO HOT TO TOUCH. *TR

I TOOK A TRIP TO GEORGIA ON OCTOBER 24, , AND ON SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 26, WHEN I STARTED THE SPYDER TO LEAVE, IT BEGAN TO STALL AT IDLE, IT CUT OFF REPEATEDLY, AND IDLED ROUGH. IT WOULDN'T MAINTAIN THE NORMAL IDLE RANGE OF 1200-1300 RPM. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT OFF, AND AS I RODE, THE IDLE WAS ROUGH FOR A FEW MILES, BUT AFTER I GOT IT ON THE FREEWAY, IT SEEMED OKAY. IT SEEMS THAT ANY OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES ABOVE 70 DEGREES AND THE HEAT FROM THE VEHICLE BECOMES WORSE WITH THE RESULTING FUEL SMELL AND A LOT OF HEAT COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND FUEL TANK WHEN GOING TO FILL UP. ON FRIDAY, 24 OCTOBER 2014I RODE THE SPYDER TO THE DEALER, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN, [XXX], CONNECTED IT TO THE B.U.D.S. COMPUTER. I AM ALSO SENDING [XXX]. A COURTESY COPY OF THIS EMAIL. THE COMPUTER OBTAINED INFORMATION THAT POINTED TO A PROBLEM WITH THE PURGE VALVE AND VAPOR RECOVERY CANISTER, AS WELL AS A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM). THIS IS IN ADDITION TO HEAT AND GAS VAPOR ISSUES WHEN THE AMBIENT OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS 75 DEGREES AND ABOVE. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON 27 OCTOBER 2014, I TOOK THE SPYDER ON A RIDE YESTERDAY OF ABOUT 30 MILES ON LOCAL ROADS. AFTER I RETURNED HOME AND SHUT OFF THE SPYDER BRIEFLY TO OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR, IT DIDN'T WANT TO START. THE STARTER TURNED THE MOTOR OVER, BUT THE MOTOR WOULD NOT START. AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET IT STARTED. I AM FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN OUT ON THE ROAD. THE SPYDER HAD A STRONG GAS VAPOR SMELL, WHICH WAS STILL EVIDENT THE MORNING IN MY GARAGE. I CHECKED THE SPYDER THIS MORNING AND IT STARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. I SUSPECT THE ECM AND PURGE VALVE CODES THAT THE B.U.D.S. COMPUTER DETECTED ARE TO BLAME, BUT THE HEAT ISSUE IS SOMETHING THAT BRP NEEDS TO ADDRESS. I, ALONG WITH MANY OWNERS OF THE CAN-AM SPYDER, HAVE CONCERNS WITH SAFETY AND HEAT ISSUES. I WILL SAY THAT I ENJOY THE SPYDER, BUT I WOULD ENJOY IT FAR MORE IF MY CONCERNS WITH SAFETY AND RELIABILITY ARE ADDRESSED. I PURCHASED A CAN AM SPYDER RT 2013 ON AUGUST 23, 2013. FROM DAY ONE I'VE HAD EXCESSIVE FUEL SMELLS AFTER RIDES,ALSO GAS BOILING IN FUEL TANK AFTER RIDES. YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR AND SEE THE GAS BOILING IN THE TANK. THERE IS EXCESSIVE HEAT COMING OUT FROM AROUND THE GLOVE BOX AREA AND ALSO AROUND THE PASSENGER RIGHT FOOT REST. NEEDLESS TO SAY ALL THIS HEAT MAKES FOR AN EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE RIDE. I HAVE HAD ALL RECALLS AND UPDATES DONE TO DATE. SEPTEMBER 2013 TOLD MY DEALER OF EXCESSIVE FUEL SMELLS WHILE THE BIKE WAS IN HAVING THE HEAT SHIELDING RECALL WORK PERFORMED. HE SAID THAT HE DID NOT SMELL THE FUEL COMING FROM THE BIKE. I WENT BACK A WEEK LATER TO HAVE WORK DONE TO THE AIR RIDE SUSPENSION THAT WAS BROKEN UPON RECEIVING MY NEW BIKE. WHILE HE WAS WORKING ON THE BIKE REPAIRING THE AIR RIDE SUSPENSION HE NOTICED THE SMELL AND REPLACED MY EVAP.CANISTER. THIS WAS AFTER I HAD THE RECALL DONE. HE HAD TO REMOVE THE RECALL WORK AND REPLACE MY EVAP CANISTER AND THEN REINSTALL THE RECALL WRAPPING. TODAY OCTOBER 28, 2014 WENT FOR A RIDE FUELED UP ON THE WAY HOME.I RODE HOME APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES. WHEN I PARKED THE BIKE I COULD HEAR THE FUEL BOILING AND COULD SEE IT IN THE TANK. OBVIOUSLY ALL THE UPDATES AND RECALLS ARE NOT HELPING. I ALSO HAD HANDLING ISSUES WITH THE BIKE FROM BRAND-NEW. THAT I HAD TO HAVE CORRECTED WITH MY OWN MONEY SPENT. *TR

THIS IS MY THIRD COMPLAINT REGARDING THIS VEHICLE. IN ADDITION TO THE SEVERE HEAT AND GASOLINE ODOR PROBLEMS WHICH I DESCRIBED IN EARLIER COMPLAINTS, THE VEHICLE HAS BECOME VERY HARD TO START WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM. NORMAL IDLE RPM IS 1,300 TO 1,400. WHEN THIS CONDITION OCCURS - AS IT HAS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS - THE RPM DOES NOT EXCEED 500, AND THERE IS LIMITED THROTTLE RESPONSE. THE ENGINE STALLS, AND THERE IS AN OVERPOWERING ODOR OF GASOLINE EMANATING FROM THE VEHICLE AS IF THE THROTTLE BODY IS BEING FLOODED WITH GASOLINE. THE DEALER AND BRP (BOMBARDIER RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS) HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. BRP HAS PROPOSED THAT MY DEALER REPLACE THE PURGE VALVE AND OXYGEN SENSOR TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM, AS WELL AS THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED HEAT PROBLEM. I AM WAITING FOR THE DEALER TO OBTAIN THE REPAIR PARTS. I WAS TOLD BY A REPRESENTATIVE FROM BRP THAT IF THESE REPAIRS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEMS, THERE WOULD BE NOTHING MORE THAT THEY COULD DO TO ADDRESS THEM. I, AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS, BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE MAY DESIGN FLAWS WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FRAME FOR THE 2013 RT WAS INTENDED TO HAVE A NEW ENGINE, A 1330 CC INLINE THREE CYLINDER RATHER THAN THE 998 CC V-TWIN. THE BRP REPRESENTATIVE ADMITTED TO ME THAT THE NEW ENGINE FOR THIS VEHICLE "WAS NOT READY" AT THE TIME OF PRODUCTION OF THE 2013 MODEL, AND THEY WERE FORCED TO USE THE OLDER ENGINE. THIS ENGINE RUNS VERY HOT, AND BEING FULLY ENCLOSED BY PLASTIC PANELS EXACERBATES THE PROBLEM. IT IS INFURIATING TO SPEND $27,000.00 ON A VEHICLE WHOSE PROBLEMS ARE NOT BEING PROACTIVELY ADDRESSED BY BRP. THE DEALER THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM WAS AWARE OF THESE PROBLEMS, YET MADE NO MENTION OF THEM AT THE TIME OF THE SALE. I WAS TRAVELING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC WHEN THE SPYDER STARTED PRODUCING EXCESS HEAT FROM UNDER THE MACHINE AND AROUND THE GAS TANK. I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION TO FILL THE TANK AS IT HAD ABOUT AN 1/8 OF A TANK. THE GAS CAP WAS SO HOT IT COULDN'T BE TOUCHED FOR TEN MINUTES. YOU COULD HEAR THE GAS BOILING IN THE TANK. UPON GETTING THE CAP OFF, IT TOOK SEVERAL MINUTES TO PUMP GAS INTO THE TANK AS THE NOZZLE KEPT SHUTTING OFF. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS 83 DEGREES. IT WAS GIVING OFF A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL. I RETURNED TO MY DEALER AND EXPRESSED MY CONCERNS AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD CONTACT BRP. THE DEALER HAS WRAPPED THE HEADER PIPES AND REPLACED THE EVAPORATOR CANISTER AND PURGE VALVE MANY TIMES. AT THIS TIME MY SPYDER HAS 22500 MILES AND THE GAS CAP CAN'T BE TIGHTENED COMPLETELY BECAUSE IT WON'T UNSCREW IF THE SPYDER IS WARM. DURING THIS ENTIRE RIDE, I STRUGGLED TO FIND A POSITION IN WHICH I COULD PLACE MY RIGHT BOOT WHERE IT WAS NOT UNBEARABLY HOT! THE SPYDER NEVER SHOWED ANY SIGNS OF OVERHEATING, BUT MY BOOT SURE DID!!! I WILL ADD THAT I WAS RIDING IN JEANS, LEATHER CHAPS, HIKING BOOTS AND HEAVY SOCKS. POSITIONING MY BOOT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO TRY TO COOL IT DOWN SOME WOULD PLACE IT CONCERNING FAR FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. I WAS FORCED TO CHOSE BETWEEN SOME HEAT RELIEF AND SAFETY. ? I WAS ADVISED TO PARK THE BIKE OUT SIDE UNTIL IT COOLED DOWN BEFORE BRINGING IT INTO THE GARAGE. WHILE RIDING THE HEAT COMING UP FROM UNDER THE SEAT IS REALLY BAD, MAKING RIDING NOT MUCH FUN. I'VE CALLED BRP TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT AS OF YET HEARD ANY THING BACK FROM THEM. I'VE READ THAT SEVERAL SPYDER'S HAVE CAUGHT FIRE, AND STILL NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. (IN WARMER WEATHER THE CONDITION OCCURS MORE QUICKLY AND MORE SEVERELY) THE LOCATION ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BIKE WHERE YOUR LEG IS POSITIONED BECOMES UNBEARABLY HOT. IN WARMER WEATHER 80 DEGREES F. OR MORE IT ACTUALLY BECOMES PAINFUL TO BARE SKIN. IT BECOMES SO HOT YOU MUST MOVE YOUR LEG AWAY AND INTO THE WIND TO PROVIDE SOME RELIEF. THIS FORCES YOU TO TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE FOOTREST AND AWAY FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. ALSO, AFTER RIDING THE BIKE AS STATED ABOVE AND STOPPING FOR TRAFFIC OR TO STOP AND GET OFF YOU CAN CLEARLY SMELL GASOLINE VAPORS. WITH THE PANELS REMOVED I OBSERVED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER THE FUEL TANK. THE HEAT FROM THIS COMPONENT APPEARS TO BE HEATING UP THE FUEL TANK AND CREATING THE FUEL VAPORS YOU SMELL NEAR THE BIKE. TO REFUEL THE BIKE YOU MUST LIFT THE SEAT TO ACCESS THE FUEL CAP, AFTER RIDING IN THE CONDITIONS STATED ABOVE THIS FUEL CAP ALSO BECOMES VERY, VERY HOT TO THE TOUCH. AGAIN, ALL OF THESE CONDITIONS ARE MORE PRONOUNCED THE WARMER THE WEATHER. I BELIEVE BOTH THESE CONDITIONS DESCRIBED ABOVE ARE A DANGER TO THE CONSUMER. THE FIRST CONDITION COULD CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION OR POSSIBLY EVEN A SLIGHT BURN TO THE SKIN. IT COULD ALSO CAUSE A DELAY IN REACHING THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH HEAT CAUSING YOU TO MOVE YOUR LEG FROM THE VICINITY OF THE BRAKE. THE SECOND CONDITION HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A FIRE. THIS VEHICLE RUNS EXTREMELY HOT, AND IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO RIDE. AFTER RIDING IN 74 DEGREE TEMPERATURE FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR, I USED A DIGITAL THERMOMETER AND MEASURED THE HEAT UNDER THE SEAT AT 157.1 DEGREES WITH THE ENGINE OFF. HEAT RISES FROM THE FRONT AND SIDES OF THE SEAT, WHICH RESULTED IN A BURN TO MY RIGHT LEG. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS INSTANCES OF THESE VEHICLES WITH NO WARNING SUDDENLY CATCHING FIRE AND BEING COMPLETELY DESTROYED. BRP IS AWARE OF THE HEAT PROBLEMS WITH THESE VEHICLES, AND SO FAR HAS ONLY OFFERED A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN AN EFFORT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS UPDATE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. ADDITIONALLY, GASOLINE BOILS IN THE TANK, AND THE GAS CAP GETS SO HOT THAT IT CANNOT BE REMOVED WITHOUT WEARING A GLOVE. MY WIFE AND I ARE AFRAID TO TAKE A LONG TRIP - WHICH IS THE REASON THAT WE BOUGHT THIS VERY EXPENSIVE TOURING MOTORCYCLE - FOR FEAR THAT OUR VEHICLE WILL BURST INTO FLAMES. AFTER A FOUR HOUR RIDE, I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION TO REFUEL. WHEN I WAS READY TO LEAVE, MY PARKING BRAKE CABLE WOULD NOT RELEASE. I HAD TO GET UNDER THE MACHINE AND PULL IT FREE IN ORDER TO RIDE HOME. IT TURNED OUT THE CABLE HAD MELTED, ALONG WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE CHARCOAL CANISTER. ALL THREE WERE REPLACED DURING THE RECALL. IN MARCH, WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON I-95 SOUTH OF FREDERICKSBURG VA, MY MACHINE STALLED AND I HAD TO CALL FOR A TOW TRUCK. A RUBBER HOSE GOING TO THE THROTTLE BODY HAD CRACKED. AT NUMEROUS TIMES I HAVE RECEIVED FIRST DEGREE BURNS ON MY INNER THIGHS FROM HEAT, UNDER THE SEAT. I'VE HAD NUMEROUS INCIDENTS OF FUMES AFTER PARKING, DRIPPING FUEL, AND FUEL BOILING WITH THE GAS CAP HEATED TO THE POINT THAT I COULD ONLY OPEN IT WHILE WEARING GLOVES. DURING ONE OF MY FIRST TIMES REFUELING WHILE LOOSENING THE GAS CAP MY HANDS WERE WASHED WITH FUEL THAT WAS EXPELLED UNDER PRESSURE, SOAKING MY GLOVES. AFTERWARD I WAS CAREFUL TO OPEN THE CAP SLOWLY (LIKE A COKE CAN UNDER PRESSURE) TO RELIEVE THE BUILT UP PRESSURE IN THE GAS TANK. HEAT ON MY FOOT WAS SO BAD THAT I'VE GONE THROUGH MANY PAIRS OF BOOTS AND WORE FIRE/HEAT RESISTANT SOCKS TO MITIGATE DISCOMFORT. I HAD THE ECM SOFTWARE UPDATE/FUSE BOX SEALING WARRANTY CAMPAIGN [2013-9] DONE ON MY BIKE AT THE MALCOLM SMITH MOTORSPORTS DEALERSHIP. I CONTINUED TO HAVE HEAT ISSUES. AFTER IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THERE WASN'T A SOLUTION TO MY HEAT PROBLEM, I HAD THE EXHAUST WRAPPED AND INSULATION INSTALLED. THIS HAD LITTLE TO NO EFFECT ON REDUCING HEAT. ON SATURDAY (JULY 26, 2014) I LEFT MY HOME AT 5:50 PM TO RIDE. THE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 95 DEGREES. ONCE AGAIN, I NOTICED HEAT WHILE RIDING. AT ABOUT 6:20 PM, TRAVELING AT A CRUISE-CONTROLLED 60 MPH ON AMBOY ROAD IN THE MOJAVE DESERT, I SMELLED HOT OR BURNING PLASTIC AND THEN I OBSERVED IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR SMOKE COMING FROM THE REAR OF MY SPYDER. AS I BEGAN TO SLOW, I ALSO NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE AREA JUST AHEAD OF THE SEAT. THINKING IT WAS EITHER AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM OR MELTING BODYWORK, I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, STOPPED AND HIT THE KILL ENGINE SWITCH. AFTER GETTING OFF THE BIKE, I OPENED THE SEAT. INSTANTLY THERE WAS A ?WHOOSHING? SOUND AND THE BIKE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I RAN ACROSS THE ROAD, CALLED 911, AND WHILE WAITING FOR THE FIRE CREW I TOOK PICTURES AND VIDEO OF MY BURNING SPYDER. *TR

I HAD THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT CHECK THE GAS VAPOR CONCENTRATION IN THE GARAGE AFTER RIDING AND FOUND IT WAS CLOSE TO BEING STRONG ENOUGH CONCENTRATION TO CAUSE A EXPLOSIVE SITUATION IF THE RIGHT SPARK WAS INTRODUCED, WAS CAUTIONED NOT PARK IN THE GARAGE UNTIL THE UNIT COOLED OFF, BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THERE IS A SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUE INVOLVED ALSO, WAS ADVISED BY A UROLOGIST THAT CONTINUED EXPOSURE TO HIGH HEAT ON THE MALE GENITALIA, COULD PRODUCT MALE REPRODUCTIVE ISSUES AS WELL AS MALE PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS WAS TOLD TO REFRAIN FROM RIDING THE BRP CAN-AM SPYDER FOR PERIODS OVER AN HOUR AT A TIME TO AVOID EXPOSER TO HARMFUL HIGH HEAT. I HAVE HAD ALL THE RE-CALL, AND RECOMMENDED SERVICE DONE. THE DEALER HAS CONTACTED BRP AND THERE IS NO SOLUTION OFFERED. I HAVE CONTACTED BRP AND BEEN GIVEN THE RUN-A-ROUND, AND TOLD TO GO TO THE DEALER, DEALER IS AT A LOSS ON WHAT TO DO. I WAS TOLD BY THE BRP TECH. DEPARTMENT TO KEEP THE ENGINE RPM ABOVE 5000 WHICH I HAVE DONE, WHICH IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE IN CITY TRAFFIC, THIS MADE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE EXTREME HEAT. DEALER SAID NOTHING WAS OUT OF THE ORDINARY. SINCE THE WEATHER HAS STARTED TO WARM UP YOU CAN FEEL THE HEAT ON THE RIGHT SIDE AROUND THE FOOT. TEMP HAS STARTED TO KICK UP QUIET HIGH AND WE ARE NOT EVEN IN THE HOT MONTHS YET. PASSENGER CAN FEEL THE HEAT AS WELL. HEAT IS ALSO ON PRETTY WARM ON THE SEAT AS WELL. AGAIN DEALER SAYS THAT IS NORMAL. I TOTALLY DISAGREE AND WONDER WHAT THE LONG TERM EFFECTS ARE GOING TO BE ON THE BIKE AS FAR AS PARTS AND WIRING. GAS SMELL AFTER RUNNING ON WARMER DAYS HAS PRODUCED THE SMELL OF GAS AS WELL. I HAD THE LATEST UPDATES COMPLETED AS WELL WHILE IN THE SHOP. WHILE THE BIKE IS SMOOTHER, I DON'T THINK IT SOLVED ANY OF THE HEAT ISSUES OR BOILING GAS ISSUE. HARD TO BELIEVE THAT BRP HAS NOT OFFERED MORE OF A SOLUTION FOR A WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED PROBLEM AND THEY HAVE KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE FOR SOME TIME. A COUPLE OF BIKES HAVE CAUGHT FIRE AND THERE IS A HEAT RECALL WHERE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS ARE MELTING AND THEIR FIX FOR THIS IS A HEAT TAPE ON THEM. THE NEW BIKES THAT HAVE COME OUT FOR 2014 ADDRESSES ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND SEEM LIKE THEY KNEW OF ALL OUR PROBLEMS AND FIXED THEM IN THE NEWER BIKE. I EVEN TRIED TO TRADE THE BIKE IN AND THE DEALERS DON'T WANT THEM, SO WE THE OWNERS OF THE 2013 RT'S ARE STUCK WITH A BAD BIKE. THEY KNOW THE BIKES HAVE A PROBLEM BUT DON'T HAVE A SOLUTION FOR IT. SO WE JUST KEEP GOING BACK TO THE DEALERS AND THEY JUST SHAKE THEIR HEADS AND RUN TEST'S TO NO AVAIL . I DROVE THE NEWLY PURCHASED SPYDER RTS FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND PARKED THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE. AFTER TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE BOILING SOUNDS COMING FROM THE GAS TANK AREA. WITHIN MINUTES, THE GARAGE WAS FILLED WITH GASOLINE FUMES. IT WAS SO OVERWHELMING, I HAD OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR AND LEFT IT OPEN FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS. THIS IS NOW HAPPENING EVERY TIME AFTER THE VEHICLE IS RIDDEN. IT APPEARS TO BE VERY LIKELY THAT THE BOILING SOUNDS AND FUMES ARE ALSO OCCURRING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. *TR

AFTER PARKING IN THE GARAGE I AM GETTING A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE GARAGE AND HONESTLY I AM AFRAID TO ANY LONGER PARK IT IN THE GARAGE. WHEN I REMOVED THE GAS CAP FROM THE TANK AFTER RIDING ON A 90 DEGREE DAY THE GAS WAS BOILING INSIDE THE TANK.I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM CAN AM ON SEPT 4 3013 ABOUT THE MASTER CYLINDER MAY MELT FROM EXCESS HEAT GENERATED UNDER THE BODY PANELS. I CALLED THEM AND ASKED ABOUT THE BOILING GAS AND THEY SAID THIS WAS COMMON AND THERE WAS NO RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THAT ISSUE. I AM NOW VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS MACHINE CATCHING FIRE OR EXPLODING BECAUSE OF THE BOILING GAS ISSUE. *TR

SINCE THE PURCHASE OF MY SPYDER THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE THE FUEL IS BOILING IN THE FUEL TANK AND VERY STRONG SMELL OF GAS COMES FROM THE CYCLE. THE FUMES ARE SO STRONG THAT I FEEL IT IS UNSAFE TO PARK IT IN MY GARAGE UNTIL THE FUMES GO AWAY. I LEAVE THE CYCLE ON THE DRIVEWAY AWAY FROM THE HOUSE ON THE OFF CHANCE SOMETHING IGNITES THE FUMES. TYPICALLY, I HAVE TO LEAVE THE CYCLE OUTSIDE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS TO TOTALLY CLEAR. THE EVAP CANISTER THAT SHOULD CONTROL THESE FUMES ISN'T DOING THE JOB. *TR

THE RIGHT SIDE PANEL BY THE SEAT GETS EXCESSIVELY HOT TO THE POINT YOU CANNOT LAY YOUR HAND ON IT, THE SCREWS WILL CAUSE A BURN IF TOUCHED. THE EXCESSIVE HEAT CAUSED A 1ST DEGREE BURN TO THE THIGH. THE GAS CAP GETS SO HOT IT WILL BURN YOUR FINGERS UNLESS YOU WEAR GLOVES AND THE GAS IN THE TANK GET NEAR BOILING FROM THE EXCESS HEAT. I DO BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE, GASOLINE CAN BE COME EXPLOSIVE IF IT GET TOO HOT. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND BRP, ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD IT IS JUST CHARACTERISTIC. I HAVE RECEIVED A 1ST DEGREE BURN TWICE AND THE BOILING GASOLINE ISSUE JUST IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE ANSWER. IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I WOULD HOPE THAT ACTION TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WILL NOT WAIT UNTIL THERE IS A SERIOUS INJURY OF DEATH. I BELIEVE IMMEDIATE ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO CORRECT THE EXCESSIVE HEAT PROBLEM AND BRP WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT HAS CHOSEN TO IGNORE IT UNTIL THERE IS OFFICIAL ACTION TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
