ON NOVEMBER 21ST, 2011, I WAS DRIVING MY ASTRO VAN ON A STRAIGHT ROAD. THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME APPLIED THEIR BRAKES. I ALSO APPLIED MY BRAKES, BUT MY FOOT SLIPPED OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. I ATTEMPTED 4 TIMES IN A PANICKED STATE TO TRY AND RE-APPLY MY BRAKES WITH NO SUCCESS. I STRUCK THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER CONSIDERING WHAT HAD HAPPENED THAT DAY AND LOOKING AT THE BRAKE PEDAL SIZE IN THE VEHICLE IT IS NO WONDER I COULDN'T READILLY RE-APPLY THE BRAKE. I MEASURED THE BRAKE PEDAL SURFACE AREA. IT IS APPROXIMATELY 4 SQ. INCHES. I HAVE SINCE BEEN LOOKING AT OTHER VEHICLES AND THE SIZE OF THEIR BRAKE PEDAL SURFACE AREA. I HAVE YET TO DATE FOUND SUCH A SMALL BRAKE PEDAL IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS VAN THOUSANDS OF MILES AND KNOW WITHOUT MUCH CONSIDERATION THE PEDALS LOCATION WITHOUT LOOKING, BUT IN A PANICED STATE I FOUND YOU LOOSE THAT REFERENCE AND IT SIMPLY COMES DOWN TO AN INCREASED OR DECREASED CHANCE OF HITTING THAT PEDAL GIVEN SURFACE AREA. *TR

DT: THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH THE METAL BRAKE LINE HAD BURST ON THE LEFT FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VAN WITHOUT ANY PRIOR INCIDENT. THE LINE BROKE AS THE BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED. THE CONSUMER AVOIDED A COLLISION AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE CONSUMER'S HUSBAND DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE APPLIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LINES. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE. SINCE THE REPAIR, THERE HAVE BEEN NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. *AK (11/29/05) *SC

INTERMITTENTLY WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED ON WET PAVEMENTS THE PEDAL BECOMES HARD, RESULTING IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
VEHICLE EXPERIENCING BRAKE FAILURE, BRAKES FEEL AS IF THERE LOCKING UP WHICH RESULTS IN NOISE. BRAKES WERE CHANGED TWICE DUE TO FAIURE. *YC
MODULE FAILURE CAUSED VEHICLE TO DRIVE RIGHT WHEN INITIALLY APPLYING THE BRAKES, AT ANY SPEED. THE HARDER THE STOP, THE GREATER THE SEVERITY OF THE DIVING TO THE RIGHT. DRIVING SITUATION WOULD GO AWAY AFTER THE LEFT SIDE BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE. FAILURE WAS UNEXPECTED, NO WARNING LIGHT OR OTHER WARNING DEVICE INDICATED A PROBLEM. COMPUTER READINGS @ DEALER DID NOT GIVE ERROR CODES, BUT REPLACEMENT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM.
INTERMITTENTLY WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED VEHICLE PULLS TO THE RIGHT/VIBRATES AND SKIDS, RESULTING IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE ABS SYSTEM KICKS IN, CAUSING THE ABS SYSTEM TO FAIL. ALSO THERE IS VIBRATION WITHIN THE FRONT TIRES. *AK

DROVE OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND ABS BRAKE LIGHT WENT ON AND WOULD NOT GO OFF. SHUT CAR DOWN AND RESTARTED. LIGHT WENT OFF BUT AS I DROVE OUT, ABS LIGHT WENT BACK ON. TOOK TO DEALER SAID IT WAS THE ABS COMPUTER THAT FAILED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY . REGULAR BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, BUT I DO NOT HAVE ABS BRAKES. ESTIMATED COST TO REPLACE ABS COMPUTER $1300-$1400.

AFTER PULLING THE VEHICLE IN OVERDRIVE, IT BEGAN TO SLOWED DOWN. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN CHECKED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK

A HYDRALIC BRAKE FAILURE CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN STOPING DISTANCE AND RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. UPON EXAMINATION AT THE BODY SHOP IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE HOSE HAD FAILED AS A RESULT OF FRICTION ABRASION OF THE BRAKE HOSE. THE SPLASHSHIELD HAS AN OPENING FOR THE BRAKE HOSE. THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE HOSE IS ONLY PARTLY SHIELDED BY AN RUBBER SLEEVE. THIS SLEEVE COVERS THE BRAKE HOSE AND THE SLEEVE EXTENDS FROM THE POINT WHERE THE BRAKE HOSE IS CONNECTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO THE SPLASHIELD -- A DISTANCE OF ABOUT THREE INCHES. WHERE THE HOSE PASSES THROUGH THE SPLASHIELD, THE BRAKE HOSE IS UNPROTECTED. THERE IS CLEAR EVIDENCE ON THE BRAKEHOSE OF ABRASION WEARING TO THE POINT WHERE THE SPLASHSHIELD WORE A HOLE IN THE HOSE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT FOR WHICH A SERVICE BULLETIN OR RECALL SHOULD BE INITIATED.
THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE HOSE FAILED. HAPPENED WHILE SLOWING DOWN. HAD REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE WHICH WAS MAKING A TURN. HAD VEHICLE TOWED & AND REPAIRED. TEST DROVE VEHICLE. STILL NO BRAKES. HAD IT RECHECKED & NOTICED HOLE IN BRAKE LINE. INSURANCE COMPANY HAS HOSE HOUSING. *AK
BRAKES AND ENGINE FAILED REPEATEDLY. THERE IS NO COMPLAINT IN NHTSA'S DATABASE, WHEN CHEVROLET ITSELT RECALLED THE PART.
ANTI LOCK BRAKES FAILED.
THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING LIGHT CAME ON INSIDE THE VAN. TOOK VAN TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM HAD FAILED AND NEEDED A NEW MODULE. THE VAN HAS REGULAR BRAKES, BUT NO ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. *AK
ABS BRAKE PROBLEMS; WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES GOING DOWNHILL, ON DRY ROAD CONDITIONS, THE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD, AND THE VAN SLOWED DOWN, BUT DID NOT STOP. CRASHED INTO A MERCEDES BENZ. WHEN THE DRIVER RETURNED THE VAN, THE PEDAL WAS NORMAL. THE VAN HAS BEEN REPAIRED. DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. *AK

ABS BRAKES FAILED ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.

WHENEVER IT'S WET OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE'S ABS LOCKS UP. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE WON'T GO INTO REVERSE. DEALER HAS SEEN VEHICLE. *AK
