TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE BRAKES WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SEIZE AND THE TURN SIGNALS BEGAN TO MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STRUTS, AND BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 142,185.

CONSUMER RECEIVED SEVERAL RECALLS FOR 1996 CHEVROLET S10 BLAZER. *MR THE VEHICLE'S HEATING/COOLING SYSTEM AND TRANSMISSION FAILED PREMATURELY. DURING A ROUTINE CHECK THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE DEX COOL COOLANT HAD TURNED INTO A REDDISH CLAY-LIKE SUBSTANCE. GIVEN THE CONDITION OF THE COOLANT THE CONSUMER PROCEEDED TO FLUSH THE SYSTEM. AFTER THE SYSTEM WAS FLUSHED BOTH THE RADIATOR AND HEATER CORE BEGAN TO LEAK. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO FAILED AND AS A RESULT ONLY FIRST GEAR AND REVERSE WERE OPERATIONAL. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY 1996 CHEVY BLAZER BEGAN TO SMOKE UNDER THE HOOD. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE SHOWED THE CAR WAS NOT OVER HEATING. I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY TO ALLOW THE SMOKE TO CLEAR AND PULLED THE HOOD RELEASE. AFTER 5 MINUTES THE CAR CONTINUED TO SMOKE. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO CHECK UNDER THE HOOD. I NOTICED A BLACK SPOT ON THE HOOD AND HAD THE SENSE TO REALIZE THE CAR WAS ON FIRE WITHOUT TRYING TO LIFT THE HOOD. I YELLED TO MY MOTHER TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. I CALLED 911 TO REACH THE POLICE. WHEN THEY CAME THEY COULD NOT PUT OUT THE FIRE. THE POLICEMAN CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. THIS BLAZER HAS OFFERED NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. WE HAVE REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR, BRAKE PADS THREE TIMES, THE BATTERY THREE TIMES, THE AIR CONDITIONER WENT OUT IN JULY, 1999, AND EVEN AFTER HAVING IT REPAIRED TWICE, IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR BECAUSE OF A "GURGLING" NOISE, BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND WHAT WAS CAUSING IT, (IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AT THAT TIME). NOW GAS FUMES FLOOD INTO THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS TIMES, AFTER FILLING UP, AND EVEN WHILE DRIVING. THEY CLAIM THAT A $1,000.00 VALVE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT I SURE WISH THEY HAD KNOWN THAT WHILE THE WARRANTY WAS STILL GOOD! THE WIPERS WORK SOMETIMES, THE BRAKES ALLOW ME TO SLIDE TO A STOP ANY TIME THERE IS MOISTURE, THE LEFT RADIO SPEAKERS ONLY WORK SOMETIMES, DOME LIGHT COVER FALLS OFF, HOOD WON'T OPEN WITHOUT FORCE, PWR. WINDOWS ONLY WORK WHEN THEY WANT TO, LOCKS STOPPED WORKING BEFORE WARRANTY EXPIRED, AND THEY "FIXED" THEM, BUT THEY STILL DIDN'T WORK. IS THERE ANY WAY THEY WILL TAKE THIS LOUSY EXCUSE FOR A VEHICLE BACK? I CAN'T AFFORD TO DRIVE MY CHILDREN AROUND IN SOMETHING THAT OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPLOSION DUE TO GAS LEAKAGE, NOT TO MENTION THAT THE SMELL AND FUMES MAKE US ALL NAUTIOUS. THE ALTERNATOR FAILURE HAPPENED SLOWLY ENOUGH THAT I COULD GET OFF THE ROAD BEFORE IT THE VEHICLE DIED COMPLETELY. HAD IT FAILED FASTER, WELL, THERE'S NO TELLING. I WAS DOING 45 MPH IN TOURIST TRAFFIC WHEN THE LIGHTS BEGAN TO DIM. AS FOR THE BATTERY, I KNEW IT WAS DEAD, BUT THE CORROSION TO THE FRAME COMES THANKS TO A SHARP EYED MECHANIC. SURFACE CORROSION IS APPARENT, AND I SHALL HAVE TO PULL THE TIRE, SAND, PRIME, AND PAINT THE FRAME TO STEM THE CORROSION. I'M WONDERING HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE SERIOUS BATTERY ACID LEAKS CAUSING FRAME CORROSION, AND HOW MANY OF THEM WILL FAIL WITH CATASTROPHIC RESULT IN THE FUTURE. FURTHER ON THE ALTERNATOR, I HAVE ANECDOTAL INFORMATION THAT A NUMBER OF GM TRUCKS AND SUVS HAD ALTERNATORS THAT FAILED JUST OVER THE 40,000 MILE MARK. THE INSIDE OF THE RADIATOR ERUPTED AND CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND ANTIFREEZE TO MIX. THIS CAUSED WATER TO FLOW IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE RADIATOR, RESEVOIR AND THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE ALTERNATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THIS FAILURE. I WAS TRAVELING ON I-95 WHEN THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED WITH NO WARNING. THERE MUST BE A DEFECT IN THE RADITOR TO ERUPT INSIDE, PLEASE INVESTIGATE, IF REQUESTED, I CAN PROVIDE REPAIR BILLS.

CLOSED DEXCOOL RADIATOR SYSTEM WAS FILLED WITH BLACK SYRUP AND HAD NO FLUID BUT SHOWED NO SIGNS OF LEAKING!? ENGINE LOST POWER AND SPUTTERED PRIOR TO ENGINE REPLACEMENT(WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN UNNECCESSARY!) AND SHOWED IDENTICAL SYMPTOMS 7 DAYS LATER, FOR WHICH A DISTRIBUTOR REPLACEMENT FIXED SYMTOMS. NOW MY "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT IS ON FOR MY ENGINE WITH 600 MILES ON IT! I AM GETTING A 3RD DEALER'S OPINION TODAY. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.
