The contact’s wife owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated there was an abnormal fuel odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. While exiting the vehicle, the contact became aware that there was an oil leak underneath the rear end of the vehicle, and the fuel odor was more evident. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was jerking while accelerating and while driving from being stationary. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Upon inspection, the contact discovered severe corrosion on the rear driver’s side undercarriage of the vehicle. Due to the rust, the fuel lines started leaking. AT APPROXIMATELY 7:47AM CST ON AUGUST 7TH 2014, I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN WHEN THE ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS DIED. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND SAFELY DRIVE, WITH NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS/OTHER DASH WARNINGS, APPROXIMATELY HALF A MILE BACK HOME. THERE WAS NO WARNING ON THE DASH (IE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) BEFORE THE MASSIVE FAILURE OCCURRED; IT WAS INSTANTLY DEAD. THIS FITS THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE IN THE AFFECTED GM MODELS. I WAS ONE TURN FROM MERGING ON THE FREEWAY. HAD THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED A MINUTE LATER, THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE INJURY/LOSS OF LIFE WAS GREAT. I HAVE BEEN WAITING ON A LIST SINCE APRIL TO GET THE DEFECTED IGNITION SWITCH REPAIRED. I HAVE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES FOR UPDATES, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD UP TO 800 PEOPLE WERE AHEAD OF ME FOR REPAIRS. WHEN I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO GM VIA THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL HOTLINE, THEY SUDDENLY FOUND THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR MY CAR. THIS IS SUSPECT TO ME. THEY ARE ALSO CLAIMING THAT THIS INCIDENT WAS NOT IGNITION SWITCH RELATED, BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT THIS WAS A NEAR-MISS INCIDENT WITH POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC IMPLICATIONS THAT FITS ALL DESCRIPTIONS OF IGNITION SWITCH FAILURES. I HAVE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS BY GM TO DRIVE WITH ONLY THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND TO AVOID BUMPY ROADS, BUT THIS INCIDENTS HAS MADE ME FEEL EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE THIS CAR. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO IGNITION SWITCH AND OTHER VEHICLE PROBLEMS AND UNSATISFACTORY CUSTOMER SERVICE AT DEALERSHIP. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AFTER SHE SWITCHED THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION AND REMOVED THE KEY. THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY RAN OUT OF GAS. THERE WAS NO WARNING. THE VERY SAME DAY, SHE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL REGARDING AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP. ALSO, THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THE BATTER EXPLODED, WHEN AN ODOR BEGAN TO COME INSIDE THE VEHICLE. ALSO, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE AC AND HEAT DID NOT WORK, THE DASH LIGHTS WORKED OCCASIONALLY, THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND THE INTERIOR WAS FALLING APART. *JB THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED, THE AC COMPRESSOR FAILED. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THEN SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH THE BATTERY AND TOXIC FUMES FROM THE BATTERY IN THE TRUNK WERE BEING SUCKED INTO THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED A SMELL OF GAS WHEN ENTERING AND EXITING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN I CAN STILL SMELL GAS. ANY TIME THE VEHICLE IS PARKED WHEN LOOKING UNDER THE CAR YOU CAN SEE AND SMELL THE GAS DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION FOUND THE FUEL PUMP SEAL TO BE LEAKING THUS CAUSING THE FUEL TO LEAK ON THE GROUND. AS I RESEARCHED RECALLS I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE FUEL PUMP IN 2006 CHEVY COBALTS BUT IT WAS ONLY FOR CERTAIN STATES. THE GM RECALL NUMBER FOR THIS IS 090226. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000. THE CONSUMER STATED ON I APRIL OF 2014, HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HAVE TWO RECALLS PERFORMED; THE IGNITION AND POWER STEERING, AND HE SIGNED AN ESTIMATED TICKET STATING ONLY THOSE TWO THINGS WOULD BE DONE AND HE WAS QUOTED OF A PRICE OF $218. HOWEVER, WHEN HE RETURNED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, THE CONSUMER NOTICED THE INVOICE HAD BRAKE WORK AND A FUEL SYSTEM CLEAN OUT, AMONG OTHER ITEMS THAT WERE NOT REQUESTED OR AUTHORIZED. WHEN THE CONSUMER DROVE OFF THE LOT, THERE WAS AN ODOR AN GAS. A MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER IT WAS PROBABLY A BAD FUEL MODULE. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING PART FAILURE, WITH SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF GASOLINE LEAKING FROM THE CAR, EITHER WHILE IT IS MOVING OR STOPPED, AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS ISSUE. MY CAR CURRENTLY HAS THIS PROBLEM, LEAKING GASOLINE AT QUITE A RAPID RATE. THE FUEL SMELL WHILE DRIVING IS UNBEARABLE. WHEREVER I PARK A PUDDLE OF GASOLINE FORMS UNDER THE CAR. IF I PARKED IN A CLOSED GARAGE, THIS WOULD BE A TERRIBLE SAFETY ISSUE. IT IS FOR GOOD REASON THAT THIS RECALL WAS PUT IN PLACE. I WAS STOPPED AT A TURN AROUND EAST OF GARFIELD ON 16 MILE ROAD IN CLINTON TOWNSHIP MICHIGAN. MY LOCAL SHOP REPLACED FUEL PUMP IN DECEMBER, BUT IT WAS NOT UNTIL LAST WEEK THAT MY MECHANIC CONTACTED ME AND STATED THAT THERE WAS A POSSIBLE RECALL. GM DENIED MY RECALL REQUEST. I EXPERIENCES FIRST A GAS ODOR IN MY VEHICLE THAT WAS EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. I THEN WAS ABLE TO SEE A VISIBLE GAS LEAK COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK OF MY VEHICLE. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE VEHICLE, IT HAS BEEN CONCLUDED THAT THE CAP ON THE FUEL TANK HAS MALFUNCTIONED. I HAVE INVESTIGATED THE VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEM AND I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE AND THIS ISSUE HOWEVER ONLY IN SPECIFIC STATES. I WAS ON MY WAY HOME, AND NOTICED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE FROM THE OUTSIDE OF MY VEHICLE. I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS FROM PUTTING A COUPLE OF GALLONS OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE EARLIER, BUT THE SMELL PERSISTED INTO THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, THE SMELL OF GASOLINE WAS STRONGER OUTSIDE. I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND SAW THE PATH THAT THE GASOLINE HAS BEEN TRAVELING. I LET THE VEHICLE SIT IN THE DRIVEWAY UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO BRING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, FOR THE FEAR OF IT CATCHING ON FIRE, OR EXPLODING WHILE DRIVING WITH MY TWO CHILDREN. THIS IS THE 2ND COMPLAINT I HAVE FILED FOR MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT. THE FIRST INVOLVED THE STEERING PROBLEM,WHICH WAS EVENTUALLY RECALLED, BUT NOT UNTIL I SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS, FOR WHICH I STILL HAVE NOT BEEN REIMBURSED. ON JULY 21, 2011, WHICH HIT OVER 100 DEGREES INN CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA, I BEGAN SMELLING GASOLINE AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE UNDER AN OZONE ACTION ALERT, BUT WHEN THE PROBLEM DID NOT RESOLVE AND BECAME WORSE I CONTACTED THE DEALER. LIKE MANY OTHER CHEVY COBALT, SATURN ION, AND PONTIAC GS OWNERS, I WAS TOLD THAT THE ODOR WAS COMING FROM A LEAKY FUEL PUMP. DESPITE MY ATTEMPTS TO GET THE PROBLEM RESOLVED, I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT AMONG THE LIMITED VIN NUMBERS THAT QUALIFIED UNDER A VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN #09V419000 NOR DID I LIVE IN ONE OF THE STATES THAT QUALIFIED. MY DEALER TOLD ME THAT I MIGHT HAVE A CASE TO FILE FOR SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT #09275A. WHICH DID INCLUDE MY VIN,, BUT MY MILEAGE WAS TOO HIGH. AS A RESULT, I HAD TO SPEND ANOTHER $496.27 TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM MYSELF, AND THAT WAS WITH A COURTESY DISCOUNT FROM THE DEALER. WHILE I FULLY UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT THAT EVEN GOOD PARTS WILL EVENTUALLY WEAR OUT, IT IS STILL NOT UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT THAT A KNOWN FAILURE OF A PARTICULAR PART SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. IF OTHER DRIVERS RECEIVE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A FAULTY PART REPLACED, ALL DRIVERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM SHOULD REGARDLESS OF WHERE THEY LIVE AND WHAT THE VEHICLE'S MILEAGE IS WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WHEN THAT PROBLEM CAN RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH SUCH AS A FIRE THAT MIGHT OCCUR FROM LEAKING FUEL OR HAVING STEERING GO OUT WHILE DRIVING. BESIDES PRIOR PROBLEMS WITH MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT INCLUDING REPLACING THE MOTOR AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION, I RECENTLY NOTICED A STRONG FUEL ODOR WHEN I WAS DRIVING MY CAR OR AFTER I HAD PARKED. I NOTICED THE SMELL ON JUNE 29, 2011. I CALLED MY MECHANIC ON JULY 1, 2011 AND HE SCHEDULED ME FOR SERVICE ON JULY 5, 2011 FOLLOWING THE INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND. HE LOOKED AT THE CAR AND NOTICED THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE MRA OR MODULAR RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY WHICH HAD CAUSED THE FUEL PUMP TO LEAK. HE STRESSED THE DANGER I HAD BEEN IN WHILE DRIVING MY CAR DUE TO THE HIGHLY FLAMMABLE NATURE OF THE FUEL LEAKING FROM MY CAR. HE NEEDS TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP WHICH WILL COST SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT GM HAD RECALLED MANY 2006 CHEVY COBALTS FOR THIS SPECIFIC REASON. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP 3 TIMES AND IT IS STILL LEAKING. 2006 CHEVY COBALT, 64, 000 MILES. THE CAR LEAKS FUEL FROM THE FUEL PUMP HOSE ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK NEAR THE EXHAUST PIPE LOCATION WHICH COULD BE A SOURCE OF IGNITION. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME YOU START THE CAR. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER, THEY REPAIRED THE CAR FOR ABOUT $600.00. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THIS MODEL. I FOUND FROM THE GM WEB SITE AND THE NHTSA SITE THAT IN FACT GM HAS RECALLED 53000 OF THESE CARS FOR THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I WAS ASSIGNED A SPECIALIST AND A CASE NUMBER AND GM WAS INVESTIGATING IF I QUALIFY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. AFTER 3 DAYS OF GM INVESTIGATING, THEY DECIDED MY VIN NUMBER DOESN'T MATCH WITH THIS RECALL. THEY SAID THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND I ARGUES THAT THIS IS A SAFETY RECALL FOR 53000 OTHER COBALTS AND SIMILAR MODELS, NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE AT ALL, ITS A SAFETY RECALL. THEY SAID THEIR DECISION WAS FINAL, AND I WILL RECEIVE NO FINANCIAL HELP. THE GM RECALL NUMBER IS 090226. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER ID NUMBER IS 09V419000. THE MECHANIC DESCRIBED MY CARS PROBLEM EXACTLY HOW THE RECALL READS, AND THE RECALL SAYS AT NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER THIS PART WILL BE REPLACED BY THE DEALER. LAST AUG 2009 I WAS LIVING MY DRIVE WAY AND THEY STEER WHEEL GOT STUCK AND I GOT TRAPPED BETWEEN MY TREES. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPEN SO I JUST ASSUMED IT WAS ME BEING A BAD DRIVER. TWO WEEKS AGO I WAS DRIVING IN A STREET AND THE BELL IN THE COMPUTER START RINGING AND GAVE ME A MESSAGE "POWER STEER" THEN THE STEER WHILE GOT STUCK AGAIN. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO SO I STOP AND CALLED A TOWING TRUCK TO GET MY CAR AND TAKE IT TO MY MECHANIC. MY MECHANIC KEPT IT FOR A DAY AND SAID THAT COBALTS 2006 AND 2007 HAVE THIS PROBLEM THE COMPUTER DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE ENGINE AND THAT'S WHAT HAPPEN. I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS AND THEY ASKED ME HOW MANY MILES I HAD IN THE CAR WHICH IS 64,000 AND THEN THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO TAKE IT TO ONE OF HIS DEALER SHOPS TO MAKE SURE. I TOLD THE LADY TO BE SURE THEY WERE GOING TO CONSIDER THIS BECAUSE I HAVE TO PAY AND THEN THEY WILL DECIDE IF IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. I DID PAY A LOT OF MONEY AND THEY SAY -YOU ARE NOT UNDER GUARANTEE- I GOT MAD BECAUSE THEY KNEW SINCE THE BEGINNING HOW MANY MILES I HAD. NOW IF I TURN LEFT OR RIGHT THE STEER WHEEL GET STUCK SO I HAVE TO STOP AND TURN OFF THE CAR. AFTER THAT I CAN DRIVE OK. IS ALWAYS DANGEROUS IF I'M IN A BUSY STREET OR HIGHWAY. TO REPAIR THEY WANT $1,000.00 THAT I DON'T HAVE. THE LADY WHO "HELPED" ME HER NAME IS MARIANA JIMENEZ AND SHE TOLD THE THEY ARE GOING TO PAY FOR A GAS LEAK THAT I HAD IN THIS YEAR TOO. BECAUSE THAT IS A RE-CALL. SHE SAID SHE WILL SEND THE PAPERS TO GET REIMBURSE BUT SHE NEVER DID. THE CASE NUMBER FOR THE PROBLEM I HAVE NOW FROM GENERAL MOTORS IS 71759207211. THEY ARE ONLY RECOGNIZING THE PROBLEM WITH THE GAS LEAKING BECAUSE THAT WAS A "SAFETY ISSUE" HOW IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE DRIVING AND THE STEER WHEEL GETS STUCK?
