WHILE STEERING AND MAKING A LANE CHANGE ON A CITY STREET, THE VEHICLE'S ACTIVE HANDLING KICKED IN LOCKING UP MY FRONT BRAKES. IT VEERED ME TO THE LEFT AND IN TO THE OTHER LANE. ESPECIALLY HAZARDOUS IF YOU'RE NOT EXPECTING IT AND DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT, AS THIS TIME I WAS NOT EXPECTING IT TO HAPPEN. TYPICALLY TENDS TO HAPPEN AT LOWER SPEEDS AROUND 35 MPH WHILE MAKING SOME STEERING MOVEMENT LIKE LANE CHANGES.

FIRST TIME ON THE FREEWAY AFTER HITTING A BUMP AND 2ND GOING ABOUT 40MPH. BOTH TIMES DRIVING STRAIGHT. AFTER TURNING CAR OFF AND ON THE MESSAGE WAS GONE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND THE DEALERS SEEM TO DENY ANY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS ALTHOUGH IV SEEN THOUSANDS OF POSTS ON THE MATTER FROM OTHER OWNERS.

I THEN HEARD A CHIMING NOISE AND SAW AN ERROR CODE ON MY DASH SAYING "SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM". I GAINED CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND EXITED THE HIGHWAY. I READ ON MANY FORUMS THAT OTHER C6 OWNERS, ESPECIALLY YEARS '05-'06 HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND THAT THE DEFECT MAY LIE IN THE STEERING WHEEL POSITION SENSOR CONNECTOR. MY VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A TELESCOPING STEERING WHEEL WHERE THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO ARISE.

VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUS RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED BUT RECALL SERVICE DOES NOT PREVENT THE LOCK UP. DATE LISTED BELOW IS THE LAST TIME AS I HAD THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DISCONNECT THE SENSOR TO TURN THE SYSTEM OFF UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS DONE TO ELIMINATE FAULT THAT COULD RESULT IN A POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT.

I THOUGHT THIS WAS VERY ODD AS IT WASN'T RAINING, NO SAND OR FLUIDS WERE PRESENT ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME, AND I WAS BARELY TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL. I THEN CHECKED TO SEE IF I HAD RUN SOMETHING OVER OR IF ANYTHING WAS JAMMED IN THE WHEELS/BRAKES.... NOTHING VISIBLE. I GET BACK IN, REVERSE JUST FINE, BUT AS SOON AS I SHIFT BACK TO FIRST AND ATTEMPT FORWARD MOTION BOOM IT JAMS THE BRAKES ON AGAIN. I THEN RE-CLUTCHED, TRIED AGAIN WITH A LITTLE MORE GAS, THINKING MAYBE I DO HAVE SOMETHING STUCK UNDER THE CAR.... NOPE, IT STILL BRINGS ME TO A STOP IMMEDIATELY. AT THIS POINT, I WAS FREAKED OUT....(NEEDLESS TO SAY) I HELD THE ACTIVE HANDLING (TRACTION CONTROL) BUTTON DOWN UNTIL THE SYSTEM WAS FULLY DISABLED, AFTER DOING THIS I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO WORK. I THEN FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL AND CALLED THE DEALER. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS RECALL FOR ACTIVE HANDLING HAD BEEN COMPLETED IN 2010. I ASKED THEM TO PLEASE VERIFY THIS AS I HAD A HEADLIGHT RECALL TO DO ANYWAYS AND SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT. LONG STORY SHORT... THE SERVICE ADVISER TOLD ME THAT THE PREVIOUS REPAIR HAD FAILED AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE DONE AGAIN. HE THEN TELLS ME THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO FIX MY CAR BECAUSE THEY ALREADY REPAIRED IT BACK IN 2010 AND THAT IT WOULD BE UP TO ME TO COVER THE COST. AFTER TRYING FOR OVER A WEEK TO CONVINCE THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING, I GAVE UP AND PAID THEM FOR THE REPAIR. IM VERY WORRIED THAT THIS WILL ALSO NOT HOLD UP. IF THIS REPAIR FAILED IN THE PAST, WHO IS TO SAY THAT IT WONT HAPPEN AGAIN, AND THIS TIME IT COULD CAUSE A CRASH, EVEN DEATH. PLEASE HELP, SOMEONE HAS TO HOLD THESE PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE.

APPARENTLY THE "MECHANICS" CANNOT PHYSICALLY INSPECT CARS ANYMORE. RECENTLY AND AFTER THE DEALER SERVICED THE CAR, IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL MORE TIMES WITH MY WIFE DRIVING. IT IS BACK AT THE DEALER AS WE SPEAK. WE ARE BOTH BEGINNING TO BE WORRIED ABOUT OUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OTHER MOTORISTS.

CONTACTED MY MECHANIC AND HE ADVISED ME THAT IT WAS THE ABS SYSTEM CAUGHT ON FIRE DAMAGING THE CONECTOR, MODULE AND REGULATOR. HE FOUND A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID THRU THE MODULATOR THAT CAUSE THE MODULES CABLES BURNED THE CONNECTOR. HAD TO CHANGE ALL THE ABS SYSTEM SINCE CHEVROLET MODIFIED THE PREVIOUS ABS SYSTEM CAUSE IT WAS DEFECTIVE. HOWEVER NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE TO THIS SYSTEM. AN APROX $3500. IN REPAIRS FOR A SYSTEM THAT THEY KNOW IS DEFECTIVE. WE WERE LUCKY NOTHING ELSE IN OUR GARAGE/HOUSE GOT DAMAGE IT WAS AN SCARY SITUATION.

LUCKY FOR ME THERE WERE NO VEHICLES BEHIND OR TO THE RIGHT OF ME SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A DEAD STOP ON THE SAFE SIDE OF THE ROAD SHOULDER (RIGHT). THE CAR NORMALLY WOULD START AGAIN AFTER THIS SYSTEM FAILURE. THIS TIME IT DID NOT AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST GARAGE WHICH WAS A FORD DEALERSHIP. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY SERIOUS HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR LIGHT TRAFFIC. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICE A NUMBER OF TIMES AT GM DEALERSHIPS FOR THE ENGINE LIGHT BEING ON. THE ISSUE IS STILL UNRESOLVED. I NO LONGER HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE AS TO ITS DRIVABILITY AND SAFETY.

MY CONCERN IS AFTER I REPLACE THESE SENSORS WHAT HAPPENS THE NEXT TIME THEY FAIL AND A FRONT BRAKE LOCKS UP. SHOULDN'T THIS BE A FAIL SAFE SYSTEM. WHEN IT FAILS A LIGHT SHOULD COME ON TO WARN ME BUT NOT TRY TO WRECK ME. CONTACTED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY THEN PUT ME IN TOUCH WITH THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DISTRICT OFFICE. ALL I GOT FROM THEM WAS THEY CUT THE ESTIMATE TO $550.00. THEY WOULD NOT ADDRESS THE SAFETY FACTOR OF LOCKING ONE FRONT WHEEL. THERE WAS A RECALL LAST YEAR WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS OF ONE FRONT BRAKE LOCKING. I HAD THE CAR SERVICED LAST YEAR FOR THIS. IT DEALT WITH WIRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN. I NEVER SHUT THE CAR OFF & AS I RESUMED DRIVING I COULD FEEL THE STEERING WAS NOT RIGHT IT FELT LIKE THE VARIABLE ASSIST STEERING THOUGH THE CAR WAS GOING WAY FAST (THE STEERING WAS WAY TO HEAVY). I WENT ABOUT 2 MILES LIKE THIS AND IT DID NOT CHANGE. I PULLED OVER & SHUT THE CAR OFF & RESTARTED IT & THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. AS THIS WAS HAPPENING THE DIC WAS DISPLAYING SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING. I TOOK THE CAR TO A GM DEALER THE TECH READ THE CODES AND SAID IT NEEDED A NEW STEERING WHEEL SENSOR HE INSTALLED THE NEW SENSOR AND SAID THAT SHOULD FIX IT AFTER ABOUT ONE OR TWO DAYS THE SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING MESSAGE CAME ON AGAIN SO I STARTED TURNING OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL AND ACTIVE HANDLING, AFTER SOME TIME I FORGOT TOO TURN OFF A/H A COUPLE OF TIMES AND FOUND IT WASN'T FLAGGING ACTIVE HANDLING MESSAGE ANY MORE THEN WENT ON A ROAD TRIP AND GOT INTO THE WAKE UP BUMPS ON THE EDGE OF THE ROAD THIS STARTED IT TO TURN ON A/H MESSAGE AGAIN, WHILE AT MY DESTINATION AND GOING FOR BREAKFAST ONE MORNING AND NOT TURNING OFF THE A/H THE CAR DID THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE THING AGAIN AND PUT ME IN THE ONCOMING LANE AGAIN . ON 07/09/2010, AND 07/11/2010, THE WARNING REAPPEARED. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE ON 07/12/2010 BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS UNABLE TO REPAIR IT AT THAT TIME BECAUSE NO "CODES" WERE BEING FOUND INDICATING A PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND, THROUGH RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET THAT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF BRAKES LOCKING UP DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND THIS CAUSES ME CONCERN. I PULLED INTO THE COMMUTER LANE TO PASS 2 VEHICLES THAT WERE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 40-45 MPH. I PASSED THE FIRST VEHICLE AND WAS ABOUT TO PASS THE SECOND WHEN MY 2005 CORVETTE STEERED TO THE RIGHT CAUSING THE RIGHT FRONT OF MY CAR TO IMPACT A 1984 4 DOOR SEDAN TOYOTA ON THE LEFT REAR QUARTER PANEL/BUMPER, BEHIND THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. THE TOYOTA STARTED TO SLIDE RIGHT AND WHEN THE WHEELS WENT FROM ASPHALT TO DIRT CAUSED THE TOYOTA TO ROLL OVER COMING TO REST ON ITS' WHEELS IN THE MEDIAN ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ON RAMP. MY CAR CAME TO REST IN THE DIRT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD APPROXIMATELY HALF WAY ON THE ON RAMP. THE DRIVER OF THE TOYOTA HAD A CUT ON ONE OF HER FINGERS AND WAS EXTREMELY EMOTIONAL. I WAS NOT INJURED. MY CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH ON-STAR WHICH DID NOT ACTIVATE DUE TO THE CRASH. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN MY CAR. I WAS TOLD THAT TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON CLEARED THE ERROR CODE SO THERE WAS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. I HAD THE CAR ALIGNED. THE IMPACT ON THE GUARD RAIL WAS AT THE TOP ABOUT 3' FROM THE GROUND. BEHIND THE GUARD RAIL IS A 75' DROP TO A GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT. THE CAR THEN CAME BACK ACROSS THE ROAD AND STOPPED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TRAFFIC. THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE NOW STANDS AT $20,000.00. SHE STATES THAT IT FELT AS IF THE FRONT LEFT TIRE LOCKED UP AND HAS NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED FROM THAT POINT ON. SHE WAS JUST HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE. I THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING WAS BACK TO NORMAL. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHEN THERE WAS ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THERE WAS ONE TIME A COUPLE OF DAYS PRIOR THAT THE "SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING" MESSAGE SHOWED OF THE DIC BUT NO NOTICEABLE PROBLEMS CAME ABOUT. I TALKED TO MY LOCAL DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY SAID THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS AN ERROR FROM DRIVING ON WET ROADS SINCE THE LIGHT DIDN'T APPEAR AGAIN AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR. I BELIEVED THIS AND RETURNED TO DRIVING UNTIL YESTERDAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION TO THIS MATTER IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF GM WILL ISSUE A PROPER FIX. PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT I EXPERIENCED THE SERVICE TRACTION LIGHT WOULD COME ON MAYBE A HANDFUL OF TIMES A MONTH. MY VEHICLE CROSSED THE NEXT LANE OVER AND WITH ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL WHAT SO EVER I WAS FORCED OVER A CURB AND INTO A STREET SIGN. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A FAULT IN THE STEERING COLUMN (TELESCOPING) AND WOULD BE FIXED WITH A COUPLE OF ZIP TIES, BUT THE PROCESS REQUIRED A LOT TO BE REMOVED AND WHILE I DID IT I SHOULD REPLACE THE TIRE SENSOR AS WELL, AS THAT COULD BE PART OF THE ISSUE. I HAD THE REPAIR DONE OUT OF FEAR THAT IF I DIDN'T , IT WOULD ENDANGER MY FAMILY. WHEN THE BRAKES SELF APPLIED, THE STEERING WOULD PULL HARD TO THE LEFT. THEY WOULD REMAIN THAT WAY UNTIL I EITHER TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF OR HELD DOWN THE TRACTION CONTROL BUTTON FOR SEVEN SECONDS WHICH TURNS OFF TRACTION CONTROL AND ACTIVE HANDLING. IF THIS WASN'T DONE, AND ANY GAS WAS APPLIED, THE BRAKES WOULD LOCK HARDER, PULSING OFF AND ON INTERMITTENTLY. THE PULL WAS DRASTIC ENOUGH TO HAVE PULLED ABOUT TEN DEGREES OFF OF CENTER-LINE, BUT SINCE IT HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS, IT DID NOT CAUSE ANY ACCIDENTS. MY CONCERN WAS, THE FEW TIMES IT HAPPENED WHILE OTHER DRIVERS WERE FOLLOWING... ALMOST HAD SOME REAR END COLLISIONS. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED FOR TWO WEEKS NOW, AND HAVE HAD NO SIGN OF IT REPEATING. THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID HE'S DONE THREE OR FOUR OF THESE AND HE PUTS IN TWO "ZIP-TIES" TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS HE STATES THE RECOMMENDED ONE IS NOT ENOUGH.
MY SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING LIGHT CAME ON 11/13/09.ON 11/14/09 I WAS TRAVELING ACROSS A BRIDGE AT 55 MILES PER HOUR WHEN MY BRAKES AND STEERING LOCKED UP. I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I EVENTUALLY SLID TO A STOP CAUSING TRAFFIC BEHIND ME TO SWERVE INTO THE NEXT LANE. I COULD BARELY GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RELEASE. THIS IS A 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE WITH 33,000 MILES. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE STEERING SENSOR INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE WIRES NEEDED TO BE CHECKED AND RE TIGHTENED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MORE SEVERE OR EVEN FATAL IF NOT FOR THE TIME OF DAY AND THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC. I COULD NOT BELIEVE SOMETHING SO DANGEROUS WAS NOT RECALLED. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, A WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES FOR THE MANUAL ACTIVE CONTROL. THE FAILURE OCCURS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THEY REPLACED THE SENSORS AND STATED THAT MORE COULD BE DONE. NO WORK WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. I'VE HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM AND CHEVY HAS ATTEMPTED REPAIR ONCE. USUALLY ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES WILL READ ZERO PSI AND THE AFOREMENTIONED WARNINGS WILL APPEAR, AND THE CAR'S ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM WILL ENGAGE MORE EASILY, THEN A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE CAR WILL DISPLAY NORMAL TIRE PRESSURES AGAIN.
