The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated while driving at speeds above 25 MPH, the ABS system failed, causing the front brakes to activate without the driver depressing the brake pedal. During the failure the active handling warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the active handling control module wiring harness was faulty and needed to be replaced. Additionally, while operating the vehicle the low beam headlights inadvertently turned off. The mechanic diagnosed that the wiring harness for the exterior lighting needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V251000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 50,000. The contact stated that he pulled the fuse box and wiring from the car. In the photos, we can see a damaged wire around a tight bend that has created tension and caused a faulty connection.

THE HEADLIGHT COVERS ARE CRAZING OVER WHICH IS MATERIALLY REDUCING THE LIGHT OUTPUT. 1. THE COVERS CANNOT BE POLISHED. NOT ONLY DOES THAT DESTROY THE OUTER COATING, THE CRAZING IS THROUGH-AND-THROUGH. 2. THE COVERS ARE GLUED ON AND CANNOT BE REPLACED BY ANY OFFICIAL MEANS, ALTHOUGH SOME INVENTIVE PEOPLE HAVE MANAGED TO SUCCEED (USUALLY AFTER MULTIPLE FAILED ATTEMPTS) BY STICKING THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY IN THEIR KITCHEN OVEN. HOWEVER, [SEE NEXT POINT] 3. THE COVERS THEMSELVES ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE. 4. THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES THEMSELVES, WHICH COST AROUND $1,000 PER SIDE, ARE SPECIFIC TO THE COLOR OF THE CAR, AND ARE NOW DISCONTINUED. IN OTHER WORDS, THERE IS NO LEGIT PATHWAY TO FIXING THIS PROBLEM. GM MADE A THROWAWAY HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY THAT COST A FORTUNE TO REPLACE WHEN IT WAS PRODUCED, AND NOW IT'S NOT AVAILABLE AT ALL. THIS IS NOT AN OLD CAR. THESE CARS WERE PRODUCED UNTIL 2013. THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER, YOU CAN'T GET ESSENTIAL PARTS TO MAKE THE HEADLIGHTS SAFE. THOUSANDS OF C6 HEADLAMP COVERS ARE STARTING TO FAIL NOW. THE NHTSA DID A RECALL FOR THE LOW-BEAM WIRING MALFUNCTION ON THIS CAR. THIS IS A SIMILAR PROBLEM IN ITS EFFECT.

IN NOV AND DEC OF 2013 AND IN JAN 2014 MY LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS WOULD GO OUT PERIODICALLY AND I TOOK MY CAR TO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WHO COULD NOT DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM. AND I WAS NOT TOLD THERE HAD BEEN HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE FROM OTHER CORVETTE OWNERS. WHY DO YOU THINK I WAS NOT TOLD ABOUT HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS? DID GM KEEP IT A SECRET FROM ALL THE DEALERS ALL OVER THE WORLD? WHEN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS AND PROBLEMS ON ONE SINGLE ISSUE, IS THAT NOT SOMETHING THAT IS PASSED TO THE DEALERSHIPS AS SOMETHING TO BE AWARE OF, TO LOOK FOR, AS WELL AS A CLUE AS TO HOW TO FIND AND FIX THE PROBLEM? THE CHEVROLET DEALER IN JAN THEY SAID THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING MY ELECTRICAL BOX AT A COST OF JUST OVER $1,000.00. I DECLINED, THAT SHOTGUN APPROACH. THEY DID NOT FIND THE EXACT PROBLEM AS PER THEIR INVOICE. THEIR SHOTGUN FIX WOULD HAVE NEVER MADE ITS WAY TO BECOME A GM RECALL ISSUE. I WAS TOLD YESTERDAY BY THE GM DEALER THEY FOUND SOME WIRES THAT WAS CAUSING MY PROBLEM. WHEN THERE IS A RECALL & A GM CUSTOMER HAS THAT RECALL PROBLEM & IT'S A KNOWN POTENTIALLY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE RECALL HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED, IT SEEMS THE PRUDENT, THE REASONABLE, THE COMMON SENSE, THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO SOLVE YET ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THE RECALL IS FOR GM TO AUTHORIZE A FIX WHEN THE THE CUSTOMER IS IN THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE SPECIFIC RECALL PROBLEM AS IN MY CASE YESTERDAY. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, THE LIGHTS ON THE CAR WENT OUT. AFTER PULLING OFF THE ROAD TO A SERVICE STATION, I NOTICE ALL THE LIGHT WERE WORKING EXCEPT FOR THE DRIVE LIGHT. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE LIGHT ON AND OFF, CHECKING THE FUSES AND FINDING OUT THE HIGH BEAM WERE WORKING. I DROVE HOME WITH HIGH BEAMS. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SAID THE LIGHT WERE WORKING. THEN THAT EVENING, AGAIN THE LOW BEAM WHEN OUT WHILE DRIVING, I REALIZED THAT THEY WORK FOR ABOUT 30 TO 45 MINUTES BEFORE THE CUT OUT EVERY TIME. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND SPOKE WITH THEM. THEY HAVE SAID THAT THIS IS ON GOING ISSUE AND THE DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF. FOR THEY KEEP FUSE BOXES FOR CORVETTES IN STOCK, MAKING A COMMENT THAT THEY DON'T KEEP FUSE BOXES IN STOCK FOR HIS TRUCK. I HAVE CHECK OUT A FEW FORUM AND FOUND OUT THAT HIS HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT ISSUES FOR THIS MODEL OF CORVETTES. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AS YOU DEPEND ON THE DEPENDABILITY OF HAVING LIGHTS WHILE DRIVING. IF SOMEONE IS UNPREPARED WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE COULD BE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. ON MONDAY WHEN I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE LIGHTS WERE WORKING AGAIN. WHEN THEY WENT TO TEST THE CAR, THEY ONCE AGAIN HAD THE PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHTS AND COULD NOT TURN THEM ON. WHEN THEY CALLED WITH THE REPAIR COSTS, THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE THE INTERMITTENT SWITCH ON THE LIGHTS. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS. THEY SAID OTHER THAN ON THAT INITIAL INSPECTION THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AGAIN SO IN GOOD FAITH THEY COULD NOT JUSTIFY THAT REPLACING THE SWITCH WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM SO THEY DID NOTHING TO THE CAR TO FIX THE LIGHT PROBLEM. THE EVENING I GOT THE CAR BACK, WEDNESDAY 5/15, THE LIGHTS ONCE AGAIN WOULD NOT WORK. THIS MORNING, THURSDAY 5/16 THEY WORKED AGAIN. I WAS SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF OTHERS HAD EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM AND TO SEE WHAT THE FIX WAS, AND I NOTICED THAT THE NHTSB WAS RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM CURRENTLY. DRIVING AT NIGHT ON MY WAY HOME, MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WHEN OUT. HIGH BEAMS STILL WORKED, SO WHEN I GOT HOME I STARTED CHECKING THE FUSES AND RELAYS BUT THEY WERE ALL GOOD. AFTER 2 HOURS WHEN THE CAR COOLED DOWN I RESTARTED THE CAR AND LOW BEAMS WERE WORKING FINE, LEFT THE CAR RUNNING FOR 20 MINUTES AND HEADLIGHTS WHEN OUT AGAIN. APPEARS TO BE A HEATING PROBLEM AT THE FUSE BOX. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT CAN RESULT IN FATALITIES IF GM DOESN'T FIX.

LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF AND WILL NOT TURN BACK ON. THE HIGH BEAMS WILL COME ON, THE FOG LIGHTS WORK. LOW BEAMS WILL NOT WORK IN AUTO MODE, OR MANUAL. TESTED DASH BOARD SENSOR, WORKS CORRECTLY, CHANGED LOW BEAM MINI RELAY AND FUSES, TWICE, PROBLEM REMAINS UNRESOLVED. CAN SOMETIMES LEAVE CAR PARKED OVERNIGHT, COME OUT AND LOW BEAMS ARE WORKING AGAIN. NEVER KNOW WHEN THEY WILL WORK AND WHEN THEY WON'T. WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE THE OTHER DAY AND LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING, WAS UNABLE TO SEE. HAD TO DRIVE WITH HIGH BEAMS, OTHER DRIVERS ON ROADWAY WERE NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT. LOW BEAMS SUDDENLY CUT OUT. SINCE THEN, LOW BEAMS ARE OK WHEN CAR IS COLD (IN MORNING OR AFTER SITTING FOR SEVERAL HOURS) BUT THEN CUT OUT AGAIN AT RANDOM TIME AFTER CAR WARMS UP, AND STAY OFF UNTIL NEXT TIME CAR IS COLD. HIGH BEAMS & FOG LIGHTS WORK FINE, ALL OTHER LIGHTING AND FUNCTIONS WORK FINE. SUSPECT FAILED CONNECTION AT PUNCH-DOWN BOARD INSIDE FUSE BOX FOR CIRCUIT THAT SUPPLIES POWER TO LOW-BEAM RELAY, REQUIRING FUSE BOX REPLACEMENT, AS HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH SEVERAL OTHER REPORTED IDENTICAL INCIDENTS IN C6 MODEL CORVETTES (FIRST INTRODUCED IN 2005) THAT I DISCOVERED DURING ONLINE RESEARCH.
