I FOUND MY RESULT FOR A CHEAP PIECE OF PLASTIC ON THE VENT DOOR THAT BREAKS SO OFTEN SURE ITS A 70$ PART BUT AS A SINGLE FATHER , I CANNOT AFFORD A 1500.00$ SHOP FEE FOR THAT, THIS IS SOMETHING CHEVY KNOWS IS WRONG , AND CAN BE A VERY LIABLE HAZARD TO ACCIDENTS ! THE HEATER IS BLOWING OUT COLD AIR, IT'S IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE TO DRIVE TO WORK WITH A BLANKET ON MY LAP, HEAVY JACKET AND GLOVES. A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AGO, I BEGAN EXPERIENCING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX. THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING. THE FAN WOULD WORK AND BLOW AIR - BUT NO HEAT. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A GM DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE ISSUE. IMMEDIATELY UPON TELLING THEM THE SYMPTOMS, THEY DIAGNOSED MY VEHICLE WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT IT. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT IT WAS "KNOWN ISSUE" WITH THE EQUINOX, THAT ALMOST 4 OUT OF 5 VEHICLES OF THAT MAKE/MODEL/YEAR HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. HE TOLD ME THE GOOD NEWS WAS THAT THE PART TO FIX IT WAS ONLY $65, BUT THE BAD NEWS WAS THAT THE LABOR WAS $1000. I WAS TOLD THAT THE HINGE ON THE TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR" WAS BROKEN AT THE ACTUATOR AND THAT THE ENTIRE DASH ASSEMBLY WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED TO GET TO THE BROKEN PART. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND HAD ALMOST THE SAME ANSWER - ALTHOUGH, TO THEIR CREDIT, THEY DID ACTUALLY LOOK AT THE VEHICLE BEFORE DIAGNOSING IT. BOTH OF THESE GM/CHEVY DEALERSHIPS SHOOK THEIR HEADS AND ALMOST LAUGHED AT ME - SAYING THAT IT WAS A "KNOWN ISSUE". I DECIDED THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY $1000 TO FIX A "KNOWN ISSUE", SO I CALLED CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE. KEEP IN MIND THAT MY VEHICLE IS SITTING AT THE DEALERSHIP DURING ALL THIS. ALL EQUINOX OWNERS ARE COVERED TO 120,000 MILES OR 1/1/2016.....SO IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE WITH HEAT BLOWING COLD TAKE IT TO AUTHORIZED CHEVY GM DEALER BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE DASH OUT TO FIX A 10.00 PART, THE LABOR CHARGE IS $2600 MY DEALER TOLD ME. THE HEAT IN THE VEHICLE HAS QUIT AND AFTER INVESTIGATING, WE BELIEVE THAT THE HEATER DOOR IN THE DASH COULD BE BROKEN. MY 16 YEAR OLD NEW DRIVER WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND THE WINDOWS FOGGED UP AND WOULD NOT DEFROST. I SAW THAT TSB 11135 WAS RELEASED FOR EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT BUT ONLY FOR LIMITED AGE AND MILEAGE. IT IS A $35 PART THAT REQUIRES THE ENTIRE DASH TO BE DISASSEMBLED RESULTING IN OVER $1000 IN LABOR COSTS. THIS SHOULD BE REPLACED REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE ON VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY HAZARDS IF OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT NORMAL SPEEDS AND THE WINDOWS FOG UP OR FROST OVER. *TR

I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. MY FRONT WINDOWS DO NOT DEFROST ON COLD MORNINGS, CREATING A SIGNIFICANT DRIVING HAZARD ON THE ROADS. I AM AWARE THAT A SERVICE BULLETIN WAS RELEASED IN JUNE OF 2012 TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE AND OFFER REPAIR AT NO CHARGE. HOWEVER, THE BULLETIN ONLY COVERS VEHICLES 'WITHIN 10 YEARS OF THE DATE YOUR VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PLACED IN SERVICE OR 120,000 MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST'. THAT SAID, I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS MY CONCERN FOR VEHICLE OWNERS SUCH AS MYSELF WHOSE MILEAGE/YEARS HAVE EXCEEDED THOSE SPECIFIED IN THE PARAGRAPH. WHEN HE QUOTED ME THAT PRICE, THAT'S WHEN I KNEW SOMETHING WAS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH MY CAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO A MECHANIC AGAIN AND WAS ADVISED THAT CHEVY/GM HASN'T ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM (CAR HEATER BLOWING COLD AIR) BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT BE COST-EFFECTIVE FOR CHEVY TO FIX IT. THE COST TO GET IT REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP IS ANYWHERE FROM $700 TO $1500 AND THAT IS WAY OUT MY POCKETS. THE COMMENTS THAT PEOPLE SAID THE COMMON PROBLEM IS THE "ACTUATOR" OR THE "HEATER CORE", BUT A LOT OF THEM WERE STEERING MORE TOWARDS THE "ACTUATOR" PART THAT CONTROLS THE DOOR FLAP TO GET EITHER HOT OR COLD AIR. I ASKED THE TECH, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT, HE STATED THAT THE HEATER STOPPED PUTTING OUT HOT AIR THROUGH THE HEATER DUCTS. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS DISASSEMBLED. THERE WAS A BAD FEELING COMING UPON ME. HE SHARED HIS FRUSTRATIONS ABOUT THIS JOB, AND THE DESIGN/PART THAT WAS USED FOR THIS SYSTEM, THAT CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. THIS WAS HIS 2ND REPAIR OF THIS PROBLEM. WELL, NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE HEATER BLEND DOOR WAS BROKE. WHILE LEAVING A PARKING LOT DURING A RAIN STORM ON THE NIGHT OF JUNE 18TH, 2011, I TURNED ON THE HEATER AND HEARD A CLICKING SOUND FROM THE DASH AREA, AND THE HEATER WOULDN'T BLOW HOT AIR. THERE WAS/IS STILL COOL AIR BLOWING FROM THE VENT(S). BECAUSE OF THIS, THE DEFROSTER ON THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT/DOESN'T WORK EITHER, IT TOO ONLY BLOWS COLD AIR. I HAD TO CRACK THE WINDOWS OPEN IN ORDER FOR THE WINDOWS NOT TO FOG UP DURING MY DRIVE HOME. BELIEVING THIS WAS JUST A SIMPLE MATTER OF REPLACING A HEATER CORE OR THERMOSTAT, AND BECAUSE I WOULDN'T NEED THE HEATER DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS I DIDN'T START LOOKING INTO THE MATTER UNTIL A FEW WEEKS AGO. IN HAVING THE PROBLEM CHECKED, IT SEEMS THAT IT IS A FAULTY HEATER BLEND DOOR/ACTUATOR. THE COST TO FIX IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE, DUE TO THE LABOR INVOLVED. CHEVROLET SEEMS TO BE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT ARE DOING NOTHING ABOUT THE POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. IN OCT 2010 THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING ON MY 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM MIGHT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY AIR GETTING INTO THE COOLING SYSTEM LINES, BECAUSE THE COOLANT LEVEL IN THE RESERVOIR HAD GOTTEN A BIT LOW. BUT ADDING COOLANT AND TRYING TO "BURP" THE SYSTEM DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. UPON SEARCHING THE WEB, I DISCOVERED THAT QUITE A FEW PEOPLE HAD THE SAME NO-HEAT PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY EQUINOX AND PONTIAC TORRENT (WHICH IS THE SAME VEHICLE PLATFORM). IT TURNS OUT THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY A SMALL "DOOR" THAT ALLOWS AIR TO FLOW PAST THE HEATER CORE. APPARENTLY THIS "AIR TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR" HAS A PLASTIC CONNECTING SHAFT TO AN ELECTRIC MOTOR, AND THE SHAFT IS PRONE TO BREAKING AFTER A FEW YEARS. THE TROUBLE IS... REPLACING THIS LITTLE PART IS NOT EASY. IT INVOLVES REMOVING MUCH OF THE DASHBOARD, WHICH TAKES A LONG TIME. LETTER FROM THE OFFICE OF SENATOR COLLINS ON BEHALF CONSTITUENT RE THE CHEVY EQUINOX RECALL *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HIS DAUGHTER PURCHASED THE VEHICLE LAST YEAR AND OCCASIONALLY THE HEAT WOULD NOT WORK. DURING THE SUMMER, THE PROBLEM BECAME WORSE WHEN HIS DAUGHTER WAS UNABLE TO CHANGE THE HEATING AND AIR CONDITION MODE. THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED IT WAS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THE 2005-2010 MODELS AND A RECALL HAD ALSO BEEN ISSUED FOR THE 2010 MODEL. MY CAR HAD ONLY 44,495 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE MALFUNCTION, AND WHEN I WENT ONLINE, I FOUND THAT MANY OTHERS COMPLAINED OF THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2006 EQUINOX. I WAS DISMAYED AT THE COST, BUT WAS MORE DISMAYED TO LEARN THEY REPLACED THE BROKEN PLASTIC PARTS WITH IDENTICAL PLASTIC PARTS ON WHICH THERE IS ONLY A 12-MONTH WARRANTY. I LEARNED THAT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE 2010 CHEVY EQUINOX ON WHICH THEY REPLACED THE PLASTIC PARTS WITH METAL PARTS. THE 2006 EQUINOX SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED, SINCE A DEFROSTER WILL NOT CLEAR A WINDSHIELD IN WINTER WITH COLD AIR, WHICH IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD! THE HEATER/DEFROSTER ON MY 2006 CHEVROLET EQUINOX FAILED TO PRODUCE HEAT. AS A RESULT, I COULD NOT DEFROST MY WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A PLASTIC AIR BLEND DOOR (PART# CH19130554) THAT IS CONTROLLED BY AN ELECTRIC ACTUATOR (PART# CH15781467). THE ACTUATOR IS NOT CALIBRATED APPROPRIATELY AND PLACES EXCESSIVE STRESS ON THE PLASTIC AIR BLEND DOOR CONNECTION. OVER TIME, THE PLASTIC BREAKS, DISABLING THE DOOR AND NOT ALLOWING HEAT TO BE DIRECTED INTO THE CABIN. THE REPAIR REQUIRES THE REMOVAL OF THE DASHBOARD, DRIVING CONTROL CONSOLES AND STEERING COLUMN TO ACCESS THE BLEND DOOR. IT COST ME $1,145.08 TO REPLACE AND REQUIRED MY CAR TO BE IN THE REPAIR SHOP FOR 2 DAYS. I LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA AND NEEDED THE REPAIR COMPLETED SO I COULD SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED BY GM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INTO AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY TO DISCOVER THE PROBLEM IN THE EARLY FALL MONTHS. I COULD ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF IT BROKE IN THE WINTER. SINCE GM HAS YET TO ADDRESS THE DESIGN ISSUES, I AM CONCERNED THAT I WILL EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. THE FAILURE OF THE HEATER ACTUATOR CAUSED ONLY COLD AIR TO BLOW. THIS PREVENTS WARM AIR FROM BEING DIRECTED TO THE FRONT WINDSHIELD TO PREVENT BUILDUP OF FROST. I WAS DRIVING ON A COLD MORNING AND DISCOVERED THAT I COULD NOT OBTAIN ANY HEAT OR DEFROSTER ACTION IN MY VEHICLE. FROM SEARCHING ONLINE I DISCOVERED THIS IS A VIOLATION OF YOUR RULE WHICH MOTOR VEHICLES MUST HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO DEFROST THE WINDSHIELD. I FOUND THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2010 CHEVY EQUINOX AT THE PRESENT TIME. THE MODULE WHICH CONTROLS THE SAME PART WHICH FAILED IN MY VEHICLE HAS TO BE REPLACED. THE END RESULT FROM THE MODULE FAILURE IS THE SAME THING WHICH I EXPERIENCED, THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO DEFROST THE WINDSHIELD. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM. THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL DOOR HAD BROKEN OFF WHERE IT IS DRIVEN BY THE ELECTRIC MOTOR. THE ENTIRE DASH HAD TO BE REMOVED TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL DOOR. I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $895 LABOR AND $55 FOR THE PART. AFTER CALLING GM AND THEY INVESTIGATED THEY OFFERED ME A DISCOUNT WHICH REDUCED THE PRICE TO$458.40 WHICH I PAID TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. ONCE THE PART BREAKS, THERE IS NO CHANCE OF DEFROSTER ACTION. THE CONSEQUENCES OF NO DEFROSTING ACTION IN WISCONSIN IN THE WINTER MEANS YOU CANNOT SEE WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND NO WAY TO RECTIFY IT TEMPORARILY. IT CAN HAPPEN ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT SINCE ONCE THE CONTROL DOOR FAILS YOU HAVE NO DEFROST ACTION. I ASKED THE DEALER FOR THE PARTS WHICH WERE REPLACED AND HE TOLD ME THAT GM MIGHT ASK FOR THEM. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX. THE HEAT IS NOT FUNCTIONING. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TELLS ME THAT IT IS A HEATER BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 72K MILES AND THIS PART SHOULDN'T BE FAILING ALREADY. IMAGINE THIS SCENARIO - A YOUNG COUPLE IN A REMOTE AREA OF NORTH DAKOTA IN THE WINTER. AND, THEY HAVE TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE BACKSEAT. THE HEATER BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FAILS AND THEY ARE 200 HUNDRED MILES FROM THE NEAREST PLACE THEY CAN STOP FOR HEAT. THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE ALRIGHT WHEN THEY LEFT ON THEIR TRIP SINCE THE VEHICLE IS ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD. INSTEAD, THEY ARE FACED WITH A SITUATION THAT COULD BE FATAL. GM SHOULD BE FORCED TO FIX THIS SITUATION ON ALL CHEVY EQUINOXES AND PONTIAC TORRENTS. *TR

HVAC SYSTEM WENT OUT ON 2006 CHEVROLET EQUINOX VEHICLE. VEHICLE HAS 38,000 MILES AND WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY WHICH WAS 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. WE LIVE IN COLORADO SPRINGS,COLORADO AND HAD MAJOR SNOWSTORM WHEN HEATER WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 25. SAFETY OF DRIVER AND OTHERS WERE PUT AT JEOPARDY DUE TO VEHICLE HEATER FAILURE. FRONT WINDSHIELD AND WINDOWS WOULD NOT DEFROST PUTTING DRIVER AT RISK. AFTER GETTING HOME SAFELY LOOKED AT INTERNET SITE (TOPIX.COM) AND FOUND APPROXIMATELY 230 OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS WITH SAME MAKE AND MODEL THAT HAS HAD THE SAME TYPE FAILURE OF THE 2006 EQUINOX HEATER SYSTEM FAILURE. THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL OF THIS PROBLEM BY CHEVROLET PUTTING AT RISK THE SAFETY OF DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE MODEL WHEN CHEVROLET KNOWS OF THE FAILURE OF THE HEATER SYSTEM. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER ON JANUARY 8, 2009 AND EXPLAINED HEATER FAILURE AND CONCERN TO LOCAL SERVICE MANAGER. SERVICE MANAGER STATED THAT THERE IS NO VEHICLE RECALL FOR THIS FAILURE AND THAT THE NUMBER OF HEATER FAILURES FOR THIS MODEL VERSUS SALES OF THIS MODEL IS LOW. COSTS TO REPLACE HEATER ON VEHICLE WAS $1100 BUT DUE TO MY COMPLAINT. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL NOTICE ISSUED BY CHEVROLET DUE TO NUMBER OF HEATER FAILURES ON THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE PUTTING DRIVERS AT RISK BY NOT BEING ABLE TO USE DEFROSTER TO PROVIDE CLEAR VISIBILITY ON WINDSHIELD AND COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING. THERE IS PRESENTLY A SAFETY RECALL (#090298) DATED DECEMBER 18,2009 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V489000 FOR THE 2010 EQUINOX DEALING WITH THE SAME ISSUE ON SAFETY AND VISIBILITY ISSUE. DUE TO THE NUMBER OF FAILURES OF THE HEATER SYSTEM IN THE 2006 CHEVROLET EQUINOX A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED FOR VEHICLE OWNERS. OWNERS ARE HAVING TO PAY FROM $800 TO $1100 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE HEATER SYSTEM REPAIRED SO THAT THEY CAN SAFELY DRIVE IN THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER AND SAFELY SEE OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH A WORKING DEFROSTER. 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX. NO EVENTS LED UP TO FAILURE I WENT TO TURN ON MY DEFROST ONE MORNING BEFORE GONG TO WORK AND THE HEAT DID NOT WORK. THE COST TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM IS B/W $1,000 AND $1,500. PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED YET AS I DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDS AT THIS TIME TO FIX CAR. WILL TRY TO REPLACE PART MYSELF. THE BLOWER WORKS BUT IT ONLY PUTS OUT COLD AIR. RESEARCHED ONLINE AND IT SEEMS ALOT OF EQUINOX OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND SAYS GM HAS REDESIGNED PART (TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR). GM HAD TO REALIZE A PROBLEM WITH THE PART DESIGN THAT CAUSED IT TO FAIL, SO WHY HAS NO RECALL BEEN ISSUED. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO DEFROST YOUR WINDOWS. POOR VISIBILITY CAN AND WILL RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. GM NEEDS TO STEP UP AND CORRECT THE ISSUE FOR THEIR CURRENT OWNERS. I AM SURE THAT MANY OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE CHILDREN AND IF WE HAVE TO TRANSPORT THEM WE WILL BE PLACING THEM IN A UNSAFE SITUATION DUE TO THE INABILITY TO DEFROST WINDOWS IN THE WINTER, PROVIDE HEAT FOR THEM AND EVEN IN THE RAIN WHEN THE WINDOWS FOG UP HOW ARE YOU TO CLEAR THE WINDOWS W/O THE HEATING SYSTEM WORKING PROPERLY. I OWN A 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX WITH 63000 MILES ON IT. THE BLEND DOOR ON THE HEATER COIL ASSEMBLY BROKE CAUSING MY HEATER TO STOP BLOWING WARM AIR. I HAD TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AND TOTAL COST WAS $1079.60 AS THERE IS NO SERVICE PANEL TO ACCESS THIS AREA AND THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD HAD TO BE REMOVED IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. I WAS TOLD THE EXACT SAME PART, THAT APPARENTLY IS DEFECTIVE,HAS NOT BEEN REDESIGNED AND THEY HAD TO PUT THIS SAME PART IN WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WILL NOT BREAK AGAIN. THE BROKEN DOOR IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BUSINESS ENVELOPE AND IS A PIECE OF PLASTIC LINED WITH FOAM STRIPPING. NOW I AM TERRIFIED TO EVEN USE THE HEATER ASI LIVE IN OHIO AND CANNOT DRIVE MY CAR IN THE WINTER WITHOUT HEAT TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD. THIS CREATED A VIABILITY ISSUE, AND NEARLY RESULTED IN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT AS I ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE I-17 TODAY (10/12/2009) I WAS INFORMED BY THE REPAIR SHOP I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO (2006 CHEVROLET EQUINOX) THAT THE HVAC AIR TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ASSEMBLY FAILED. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY REPAIR SHOP AND 2 CHEVROLET DEALERSHIPS THAT GM HAS REDESIGNED THIS ASSEMBLY TO CORRECT THE ISSUE, AND HAVE ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN, HOWEVER THEY HAVE YET TO ISSUE A RECALL. MY REPAIR SHOP IS CURRENTLY REPLACING THE AIR TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ASSEMBLY. I WAS QUOTED THAT THIS IS A 9.5 HOUR PROCEDURE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO DISABLE THE DASH TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE ASSEMBLY. THE CAR WAS PARKED FROM TUESDAY 8/19 UNTIL 8/23 DUE TO TROPICAL STORM FAY. ON 8/24, THE FLOORBOARDS WERE SOAKING WET FROM UNDER THE DASHBOARD TO UNDER THE BACK SEAT; PUSH ON THE CARPET AND WATER WOULD JUST WELL UP.
