The contact stated that after arriving to his destination, he saw fuel leaking from the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the fuel module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V459000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

The contact also stated that the vehicle would appear to lose nearly half a tank of gasoline approximately 1 to 2 hours after fill-up. The contact also stated that a friend who was also an independent mechanic had checked underneath the vehicle and discovered a small amount of gasoline that had spilled out of the fuel pump. IN THE MORNING OF MAY 1, 2014, I WENT TO THE PARKING LOT TO GET THE EQUINOX TO BUY SOME GROCERIES. WHEN I WAS OPENING THE DOOR, I SMELLED GASOLINE. SO I LOOKED UNDER THE EQUINOX AND SAW A BIG WET SPOT UNDER THE FUEL TANK. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT THE EQUINOX TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP. IT WAS FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING. SO I BOUGHT A NEW FUEL PUMP AND THE REPAIR WAS FINISHED ON MAY 3, 2014. I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION THAT ON JUNE 18, 2013, I BROUGHT THE EQUINOX TO THE CHARLES CLARK CHEVROLET FOR INSPECTION AFTER I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM GENERAL MOTORS FOR THE FUEL PUMP THAT WOULD LIKE. AFTER THE INSPECTION OF THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP, THE DEALER DECLARED NO LEAKS AND FOUND ALL WITHIN SPECS. I WAS MISLED BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP LEAKED. BEING RECALLED, THE DEALER SHOULD HAVE CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP LEAKING OR NOT AND I WOULD NOT HAVE SPENT FOR THE REPAIR. OF COURSE THIS WOULD END UP COSTING ME 9 ARMS AND 3 LEGS BUT AT THAT TIME THE CHEVROLET DEALER IN TUPELO MS. ABOUT A MONTH AGO WE STARTED SMELLING GAS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. AFTER A FEW WEEKS THE VEHICLE WAS STARTING TO HAVE TROUBLE STARTING WHERE IT WOULD SOUND LIKE THE CAR WAS "FLOODED" AND WOULDN'T TURN OVER RIGHT AWAY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TODAY AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CRACKED FUEL MODULE SYSTEM THAT WAS LEAKING FUEL. I HAVE READ THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS PART ON THIS PARTICULAR EQUINOX AND THERE IS EVEN A RECALL ON THE PART BUT IN ONLY 4 STATES WHICH ISN'T FAIR TO REST OF THE OWNERS THAT ARE SUFFERING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

I CONTACTED GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE BY PHONE (800-243-8872) TO FIND OUT IF MY VEHICLE WAS COVERED, WAS TOLD NO, ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ORIGINALLY TITLED IN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STATES "ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, NEVADA, AND TEXAS". WAS TOLD BY GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT ME IF IT WAS DECIDED THAT MY VEHICLE WOULD BE COVERED. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM, I CAN PROVIDE A CASE # UPON REQUEST. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHERE THE CAR WAS TITLED, DID NOT MY VEHICLE COME DOWN THE SAME ASSEMBLY LINE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMPONENT FAILURE/MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. HE DROPPED THE TANK AND A POOL OF GASOLINE IS SITTING IN A DEPRESSED AREA ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK WHERE THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED. THE GAS IS LEAKING WHERE THE FUEL PRESSURE LINE CONNECTS TO THE PIPE ON TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A HEAT SHRINKED WRAPPED CONNECTION ( NO CLAMPS ) WHICH HAS CRACKED CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK OUT AND DOWN THE SIDES OF THE FUEL TANK IN CLOSE VICINITY OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. MY MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP/FUEL MODULE/FUEL LINE ASSEMBLY ( YES, ITS ALL ONE UNIT ). SET ME BACK $ 1,200 DOLLARS AND NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY AND I HOPE THIS ONE'S NOT DEFECTIVE. I LOOKED UP UNDER THE VEHICLE AND FOUND A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK AND RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE NEXT TO THE FUEL FILL NECK THAT'S LOCATED VERY CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. AT THAT POINT WE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND CALLED OUR LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WHERE TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FUEL PUMP ISSUE AND WE NEEDED TO BRING IT IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE GUESSTIMATE COST IS ABOUT $1000.00 PARTS AND LABOR IF THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I DECIDED TO REMOVE THE FUEL TANK MYSELF SINCE I HAVE BEEN A MECHANIC FOR 20+ YEARS. I WAS CORRECT THAT IT'S A CRACKED IN THE FUEL PUMP PIPE ON THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK THAT'S PART OF THE FUEL PUMPASSEMBLY. THE LEAK WAS SOAKING THE ELECTRIC CONNECTORS FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND RUNNING DOWN THE TANK NEXT TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY HAVE NOT SEEN AN ISSUE WITH THIS BEFORE. THE TOP OF THE TANK IS VERY PROTECTED. THERE IS NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE FROM SOMETHING FROM THE ROAD THAT MIGHT HAVE HIT IT OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS PROBLEM OTHER THAN STRESS FROM NORMAL USE. STARTED SMELLING GASOLINE AFTER LEAVING MY 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX PARKED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THEN MY EQUINOX HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING AFTER BEING PARKED OVERNIGHT. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER, AND THEY FOUND A CRACKED FUEL TANK AND A LEAK IN THE FUEL PUMP. THE COST FOR THE FUEL TANKS WAS $1,000, BUT THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO APPLY A ONE-TIME GM SAFETY FIX, WHERE I ONLY PAID $200 AND GM COVERED THE REST. THE LEAK IN THE FUEL PUMP WAS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. *TR
THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. PRIOR TO TAKING THE VEHICLE INTO THE SHOP YOU WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE KEY OVER A COUPLE TIMES TO PRIME THE LINE BEFORE IT WOULD START. I WAS TOLD THERE IS A GAS LEAK DUE TO FAULTY FUEL LINES. GM DOES NOT MAKE THE REPLACEMENT LINES SEPARATELY SO THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP MOST BE REPLACED. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND A MANUFACTURING DEFECT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR, UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO RECALL SO I WILL BE PAYING FOR IT OUT OF POCKET. *TR

2007 EQUINOX WITH 69,000 MILES HAD A GAS SMELL OUTSIDE AS WELL AS IN THE CABIN. TOOK IT RIGHT TO THE DEALER ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE SERVICE SUPERVISOR PUT IT ON THE LIFT AND SAID I HAD A GAS LEAK AND COULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE. INDICATED IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL PRESSURE MODULATOR. ESTIMATED THE COST OF REPAIR WOULD BE ABOUT $650 PLUS LABOR. I CALLED BACK THAT MONDAY EVENING TO INQUIRE IF THE LEAK HAD BEEN PINPOINTED. GOOD NEWS!!! THE PART WOULD TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO GET IN BUT IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY!!! SAVED ME BETWEEN $1200 - $1500. CHEVY DEALER IN ENTERPRISE, AL IS THE GREATEST! TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. THE CONTACT SMELLED GASOLINE AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A GASOLINE LEAK. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 58,000.

2007 CHEVY EQUINOX GAS LEAK. NOTICED INCREASED SMELL OF GAS. PREVIOUS TO THIS I HAD A LONGER THEN NORMAL STARTING PROBLEM, WINDS OUT THEN STARTS. I WAS TOLD TO LEAVE THE KEY IN START POSITION TO BUILD UP PRESSURE IN THE GAS LINES. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT WANT TO WARRANTY THE DEFECT. I ASKED FOR A QUOTE AND SAID IT WAS UPWARD OF $1,500. THIS IS AFTER HAVING TO PAY $93 DOLLARS FOR TELLING ME I HAD A GAS LEAK I KNOW I ALREADY HAD. TO MY OWN TROUBLESHOOTING I FOUND THAT THE FITTING THAT ATTACHES THE HIGH PRESSURE GAS LINE TO THE GAS PUMP MANIFOLD APPEARS TO BE A PLASTIC TO PLASTIC COMPRESSION FITTING. IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT AFTER CONSTANT VIBRATION THESE TWO PLASTIC PARTS CAN CREATE A GAP FOR GAS TO ESCAPE IN LARGE QUANTITY. THUS THE CONSTANT GAS SMELL. WITH THE KEY IN THE START POSITION NOTICEABLE GAS CAN BE SEEN DISPENSING ONTO THE FLOOR. A MANUFACTURE DEFECT IN MY EYES. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FIX IT MYSELF WITH GM PARTS AT A HIGH COST OF & 600.00 DOLLARS, A GAS PUMP ASSEMBLY NOT OTHERWISE FOUND ELSEWHERE. WITH THE ANTICIPATION OF THE NEW PART HAVING THE SAME DEFECT. *TR

NOTICED STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE AFTER DRIVING. THE SMELL LINGERED FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. BROUGHT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK. ALSO FUEL SENSOR INDICATED GAS TANK WAS 1/2 FULL, BUT DEALER STATED TANK WAS FULL. VEHICLE HAS 67000 MILES ON IT. DEALER IS REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL SENSOR UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE RESULTED FROM THIS, BUT I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS HAZARD AS LEAKING FUEL/FUMES COULD HAVE SPARKED AN EXPLOSION. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, IT APPEARS OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. *TR

I DISCOVERED A SMELL OF FUEL FROM MY VEHICLE. HAD VEHICLE INSPECTED ON 3/25/10 AND FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL TANK IS LEAKING DUE TO FAULTY MANUFACTURING. THE VEHICLE IS A 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX LT. IT IS JUST BEYOND WARRANTY AND NO EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS PURCHASED. THE FUEL LEAK IS BENEATH THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT. THERE IS NO WEAR AND TEAR TO THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN A COLLISION. THE LEAK IS DUE TO POOR MANUFACTURING OF THIS PART. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY INJURY OR FIRE YET. BUT THE POTENTIAL EXISTS.
