While driving the power steering stopped working. I could still steer manual but was very hard. The service stability light came on. I pulled over to the side of the road turned car off then back on and still wouldn’t work. I decided to drive home with no power steering. Took to a local mechanic and he found that there is a TSB for this issue but is having challenges following the TSB. Due to he needs a “tech2” scanner. He thinks he found a workaround but that web site was down. He still has car and will resume today

I HAD MY REAR BRAKES REPLACED AND THEN A WEEK LATER THE SERVICE STABILITRAK LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP I GOT MY BRAKES REPLACED AT AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF AND THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE LIGHT WENT OFF AND ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR WEEKS AND THEN FINALLY TURNED OFF. NEXT I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF. I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON, PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND TURN IT OFF AGAIN TO GET THE KEY OUT SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW. NOW I DROVE MY CAR AND PARKED AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE AND THEN I TURNED IT ON A FEW HOURS LATER AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAY THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. MY ISSUES ARE THE EXACT SAME AS MANY OTHER DRIVERS HAVE NOTED AND MY CAR IS NOT PART OF A RECALL, BUT THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILING WITH NO WARNING LIGHT MONTHS AFTER THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS FINE AND REPLACED BRAKES SEEMS ODD. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT TO THE POWER STEERING IN THE EQUINOX THAT'S LEADING TO ERRATIC WARNING LIGHTS, KEY REMOVAL DIFFICULTIES, AND POWER STEERING SUDDENLY GOING OUT. CHEVY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING!

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE INTERMITTENT ELECTRONIC DISCONNECTION WAS IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO WARRANTIES OR RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. NOW I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE A MONTH AGO FROM A DEALERSHIP AND WAS GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR THIS BUT TO NO AVAIL I COMPLAINED BECAUSE I AM A NEW OWNER AND THAT SHOULD NOT BE A REPAIR I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR. BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP THEM FOR MAKING ME PAY A DEDUCTIBLE AS IF IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK HOME BUT AS I WAS DRIVING I NOTICE MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF AT ALL. AFTER MAKING IT BACK TO INTO MY DRIVEWAY I CUT OFF THE IGNITION WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON TO SEE IF THIS WOULD HELP EITHER OF THE PROBLEMS BUT TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE NOW TAKEN THE CAR TO MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND THEY HAVE INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE SEN THIS ISSUE WITH A NUMBER OF EQUINOX AND IT IS INDEED AN ISSUE MY STABILITRAK.

THIS WAS THE DAY AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AUTO SHOWCASE OF BELAIR MD. THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT HAPPENED ATLEAST 7 TIMES IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS ALONE. I REQUESTED FOR THEM TO TAKE THE CAR BACK, THEY REFUSED.. 4 WEEKS INTO OWNING THIS CAR THE POWER STEERING ISSUE WAS FINALLY RESOLVED.DURING THAT TIME PERIOD I FOUND OUT THAT THE CAR SOLD TO ME WAS STOLEN, THE DEALER DID NOT TELL ME THAT AND SHOWED ME PAPER WORK THAT WAS NOT A CAR FAX REPORT. THREE MONTHS LATER IN OCTOBER OF 2013 MY CAR STARTED OVER HEATING AND CUTTING POWER OFF TO THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT ON 95. IT HAPPENED 5 TIMES. A MECHANIC LOOKED IT OVER AND SAID THE HEAD GASKETS WERE BLOWN. AFTER A MONTH IT WAS FIXED. ONE MONTH LATER IN DECEMBER, MY CAR WOULD SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE DRIVING. I AM NOT JOKING WHEN I SAY THAT HAPPENED OVER 100 TIMES. I HAVE OVER 20 VIDEOS OF THIS HAPPENING UP UNTIL JUST RECENTLY IN FEBRUARY OF 2015. SO THE ISSUE NOW,OTHER THAN MY CAR JUST RANDOMLY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING, IS MY HEAD GASKETS BLEW AGAIN. MY KEY KEEPS GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION. I LITERALLY HAVE TO TURN MY CAR ON AND OFF, MOVE THE SHIFTER IN AND OUT OF PARK, SHAKE THE SHIFTER, TAKE MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKES, AT LEAST 10-15 TIMES BEFORE THE IGNITION WILL RELEASE THE KEY. THE TRACKING CONTROL AND SERVICE STABILITRAK WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON SINCE THE FIRST TIME. IT HAD HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY FOR 3 YEARS. UNTIL I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE FAILURE. I HAD TO SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. RECENTLY, I HAVE HAD ANOTHER ISSUE, THE KEY GETS STUCK. THE KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION WHEN TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN THE KEY OFF, THE ENGINE TURNS OFF, BUT THE KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION. IT SEEMS TO HAVE BECOME DISCONNECTED TO THE MOTOR AS I CAN HEAR THE MOTOR GOING UP AND DOWN WITHIN THE DOOR. 2. STABILITRAK WARNING AND ENGINE LIGHT ARE CONSTANTLY TURNING ON AND OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF OVER THE PAST YEAR OR SO BUT THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT GET A READING FROM THE COMPUTER. NOW IT HAS BEEN ON FOR THE PAST 2 WEEKS CONSTANTLY 3. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOES NOT WORK. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT A FEW DAYS LATER THE GAUGE WENT HAYWIRE AGAIN. IT GETS WORSE WHEN I FILL UP WITH GAS AND TENDS TO MIRROR THE GAS GAUGE READING MOST OF THE TIME. 4. THE KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION WHEN TURNING OFF THE CAR. THIS IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN THE KEY OFF, THE ENGINE TURNS OFF BUT THE KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION. HAVE TO TURN CAR BACK ON, PUT IT IN AND OUT OF PARK, TURN THE WHEEL, BACK UP, DRIVE FORWARD OR JUST SIT AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND IT COMES OUT. 5. OCCASIONALLY THE ELECTRONICS GO CRAZY - THE TURN SIGNALS WON'T WORK AND THE RADIO SHUTS DOWN. ON 7-7-14, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM THE DOCTORS' OFFICE, THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN. IT WAS LIKE I WAS DRIVING ON A WASHBOARD AND WAS VERY HARD TO STEER. WHEN I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND WAS BACKING UP TO PARK, IT WAS AS THOUGH I HAD NO POWER STEERING. I TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS, AND WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ATTEMPTED TO MOVE THE SHIFT LEVER, IT WOULD NOT MOVE UNTIL I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD. THEN THE VEHICLE RESPONDED NORMALLY. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. IN JUNE 2014, WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP IN AN EFFORT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THEY READJUSTED THE BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH. I HAD NO PROBLEM UNTIL 7-7-14 . WE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY QUOTED US A COST OF OVER $600.00 TO REPLACE THE TRACTION CONTROL MODULE BECAUSE THEY TOLD US THAT IT WAS UNRELATED TO THE FIRST INCIDENT. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS DOING THE SAME EXACT THING AS THE FIRST TIME WE TOOK IT IN. AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS IDENTICAL TO MINE, I'M NOT VERY COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT I'M BEING TOLD REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. WHEN I LEFT THE CAR STARTED TO ACT CORRECTLY BUT THE STABILITRAK SERVICE LIGHT CAME OFF AND ON AGAIN WE ASKED ABOUT THIS AT THE GARAGE THEY WOULD NOT COMMENT ON THAT UNTIL WE PAID $89.00. AS I DID NOT FEEL SAFE AT ALL DRIVING THE CAR I REMEMBERED ANOTHER PLACE HERE IN TOWN THAT HANDLED CARS AND THE REBUILDING OF MOST ANY MAIN FEATURED ITEMS FROM MOTORS TO TRANSMISSIONS AND WENT THERE THE AUTO MECHANIC TOOK THE CAR FOR A DRIVE OF COURSE THE STABILITRAK SERVICE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON BUT THE STEERING ONCE AGAIN ACTED UP. HE IMMEDIATE INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS THE POWER STEERING MOTOR AND WE ORDERED IT AND HAD IT INSTALLED LAST WEEK JUNE 20TH. THE GARAGE HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE GETTING THE PART BECAUSE THEY HAD TO DEAL WITH A DEALER HERE IN TOWN AND THEY GAVE THEM A VERY HARD TIME. DURING THIS WAIT TO GET THE PART AND HAVE IT INSTALLED THE STEERING ONLY ACTED UP DURING THE COLD MONTHS BUT ONCE THE WEATHER WARMED UP I DID NOT HAVE A PROBLEM AND THE LIGHT ISSUE STOPPED. WITH THE NEW MOTOR THE CAR DROVE WELL THIS WEEKEND BUT NOW THE LIGHT HAS AGAIN COME ON FOR THE STABILITRAK SERVICE. WE HAVE A 2007 EQUINOX THAT THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING. PRIOR TO THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT, THE SERVICE STABILITRAK LIGHT WOULD COME ON AT RANDOM TIMES FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I CONTACTED A DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT THERE COULD BE CORROSION ON THE CONNECTORS FOR THE SENSORS FOR THE STABILITRAK. WHEN THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING, I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT OTHERS WERE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES, SO I CONTACTED GM WHO WANTED ME TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THEY COULD DO. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. AFTER A WEEK AND A HALF OF TALKING TO GM THEY SAID, DUE TO THE AGE AND MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. DUE TO THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS, WE THEN ASKED THEM HAVE THEY DONE ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE CONTROL MODULE. THEY COULDN'T GIVE US AN ANSWER. WE AREN'T GOING TO CONTINUE TO PAY FOR CONTROL MODULES BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIX THE ISSUE. I OWN A 2007 CHEVROLET EQUINOX WITH 77,000 MILES. AFTER PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT AT A RETAIL STORE, I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WENT INSIDE. UPON RETURNING, AFTER STARTING THE CAR, I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VIRTUALLY IMMOVABLE. I THOUGHT THE ENGINE HAD STALLED OUT BUT REALIZED THAT IT WAS STILL RUNNING. THEN I NOTICED THE "SERVICE STABILITRAK" MESSAGE ON THE DIC. DROVE THE CAR HOME WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY AND LOOKED FOR THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ONLY AFTER GOING ONLINE AND READING ABOUT THE SCORES OF INDIVIDUAL COMPLAINTS FOR THIS POWER STEERING FAILURE DID I REALIZE THAT A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM EXISTS. I WENT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. AFTER PAYING THE REPAIR COSTS OF OVER $660 I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS TO COVER THIS MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THE ANSWER WAS "NO". IT IS SERIOUSLY UNBELIEVABLE THAT SUCH AN OBVIOUSLY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED WITHOUT SO MUCH AS AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT FROM GM THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM IN AN EQUINOX. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 5 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS AND EACH TIME THAT I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT, THE LIGHT GOES OFF AND THE DEALER SAYS THEY CANNOT DIAGNOSE WITHOUT A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THIS CONCERNS ME. AUTOZONE HOOKED UP THERE LITTLE GADGET WHILE IT WAS ON ONCE AND INDICATED THAT THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR MAY BE THE CULPRIT, SAID IT CAME UP THREE TIMES. POWER STEERING COLUMN LOCKS UP WHEN I TURN ON VEHICLE, THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES IN THE PAST 3 YEARS, EACH TIME I TAKE TO DEALER, THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE CANNOT FIX IT. I HAVE HAD VEHICLE SINCE JULY OF 2007. MY CURRENT MILEAGE IS 42,998 THE FIRST ERROR WITH COLUMN STARTED PROBABLY IN OCTOBER OF 2007 AND OCCURS EVERY SO OFTEN BUT BY THE TIME I GET IT TO DEALER, IT CANNOT BE DUPLICATED. WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS TURN THE CAR ON AND OFF UNTIL IT "REGISTERS" AND THEN THE COLUMN WORKS OTHERWISE IT IS VERY STIFF AND HARD TO NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN.

A FEW DAYS LATER, WHILE DRIVING FROM ILLINOIS TO COLORADO, THE "SERVICE STABILITRACK" LIGHT CAME ON, BUT WENT OUT AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 60 MILES WITH IT ILLUMINATED. AGAIN I WAS TOLD OVER THE PHONE BY THE ILLINOIS DEALERSHIP THAT IT WAS PROBABLY NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED WITH, AND IT SHOULD RESET ITSELF. IN DECEMBER 2010, I WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I RECEIVED NO ALARMS THE PREVIOUS DAY, AND THE CAR WAS WORKING PROPERLY. THE SERVICE STABILITRACK LIGHT REMAINED ON AT THIS POINT. I LOSS THE ABILITY TO DRIVE MY CAR SAFELY TO THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT AT IN COLORADO. AFTER TOWING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE "POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR" HAD GONE OUT, AND WOULD NEED REPLACING AT THE COST OF $1000. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL HISTORY CODES INDICATING BACK TO OCTOBER, THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. AFTER HE STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS A LEMON, THE DEALER STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. HE CONSULTED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT IF THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,025 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10.

YOU COULD TURN MY STEERING WHEEL 360 DEGREES, AND THE WHEELS NEVER MOVED, THE BRAKES DIDN'T WORK, THE GAS DIDN'T WORK, AND ALL ALARMS WERE GOING OFF THAT THE SYSTEMS, INCLUDING THE AIRBAGS WERE NOT WORKING. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED AS I HAD JUST BEGUN MAKING A TURN INTO ROADWAY AND ALL VEHICLES COMING AT ME BOTH WAYS WERE ABLE TO SWERVE, AND THE CAR WAS GOING SLOW ENOUGH AND OVER A SLIGHT INCLINE THAT IT ROLLED TO A STOP JUST BEFORE HITTING A STEEL LIGHT POST. POWER STEERING FAILURE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER START UP POWER STEERING DID NOT OPERATE. DASHBOARD WARNING READ SERVICE STABILITRACK. DROVE HOME APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES WITHOUT POWER ASSIST. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE AT HOME POWER STEERING APPEARED TO BE NORMAL, BUT SERVICE STABILITRACK WARNING WAS STILL LIT. A QUICK LOOK ON THE INTERNET SHOWED MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF THIS PROBLEM IN CHEVROLET MALIBU WITH SIMILAR POWER STEERING. CAR WILL BE BROUGHT TO DEALER NEXT WEEK. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.*AK
