After taking my vehicle to three repair shops I was advised by the last body shop that there was a bulletin (14159) out in regards to excessive engine oil consumption. The mechanic explained the issues I am having with my car is due to the excessive engine oil consumption. He stated the car is not losing oil it’s burning it. My entire engine is effected due to this issue. To go further in detail my car was cutting on and off in the middle of traffic. This is a huge safety issue for me I have a disabled son who I travel with on the daily. I quote “ All consumers should receive notice of a recall affecting them. Car manufacturers are required to notify registered owners and purchasers of all recalled cars by letter, and state agencies will provide manufacturers with lists of registered owners for this purpose.” I never received a letter concerning a recall or this issue. I took very well care of my vehicle my car is a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and it only has 108,774miles. This is so devastating I have no other transportation and now I’m stuck looking for a new vehicle. If any documentation is needed I can assure you I can provide it.

The contact stated that the front and rear driver’s side and passenger’s side curtain air bags deployed without a crash. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 180,000.

Accident April 26, 2021 where our vehicle was hit "Straight on Front Left" and seat belt tensioner did not restrain the passenger & "Air Bag did not deploy". Request EDR (Event Data Recorder) be scanned to determine what happened and how the car systems functioned or did not function properly. Driver suffered head trauma as a result of the accident. Please advise on action needed to follow up on this malfunction.

ON FEBRUARY 26, I WAS DRIVING MY 2010 EQUINOX TO MY MECHANIC FOR AN ANNUAL VEHICLE INSPECTION AND TO FIND OUT WHY MY SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ON. AS I WAS DRIVING SMOKE STARTED FLOWING OUT FROM UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE DASHBOARD. I STOPPED THE CAR AND GOT OUT THINKING IT WAS GOING TO GO ON FIRE. AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES, THE SMOKE STOPPED AND I PROCEEDED TO MY MECHANIC. ON MARCH 10TH MY MECHANIC HAD THE CAR IN HIS GARAGE AND WAS COMPLETING THE INSPECTION AND HE DECIDED TO INVESTIGATE WHY THE CAR WOULD HAVE BEEN SMOKING. HE DECIDED TO LET THE CAR IDLE IN THE SHOP TO SEE IF IT WOULD START SMOKING. AS MOMENTS PASSED THE MECHANIC TOLD ME HE HEARD A 'FIRECRACKER' SOUND AND LOOKED TO SEE THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT REASON. I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC TO TAKE IT TO A CHEVY DEALER. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND TOLD THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THIS STORY AND THEY WERE UNSURE WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN. THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT YET HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE DEALER OR MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO RECTIFY IT WITHOUT COST TO THE OWNER. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE HORROR THAT WOULD HAVE ENSUED IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING.

SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE, I CONSTANTLY GET A "SERVICE AIRBAG" MESSAGE ON MY DASHBOARD. I HAVE NOTIFIED THE DEALER AS WELL AS GM/CHEVORLET BY PHONE AND WAS TOLD THAT UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER IN WHICH I PURCHASED AND SINCE THEY DID NOT SEE THE MESSAGE THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I FEAR (GOD FORBID) BEING IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAG DOES NOT DEPLOY. I DO TRAVEL WITH MY CHILDREN IN WHICH ONE OF THE 3 IS A TODDLER. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. - ALSO WHICH IS VERY ANNOYING MY KEY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION. NOW I HAVE 2 SETS OF KEYS ONE GETS STUCK MORE THAN THE OTHER, BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHERE I HAVE TO SPEND HOURS TRYING TO REMOVE IT - I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER BUT ONCE AGAIN WAS TOLD NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THIS. ON DECEMBER 27, 2015, WE WERE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY 465 IN INDIANAPOLIS; WE WERE ON THE LEFT LANE, APPROX. 65 MILES PER HOUR WHEN WE HEARD A HUGE EXPLOSION. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AND WAS ABLE TO CONTROL DE CAR AND DRIVE TO THE RIGHT WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. THE SMELL OF BURNING WAS PRETTY INTENSE, WE WERE NERVOUS AND SHOOK UP FOR WHAT HAD HAPPENED SO MY HUSBAND STEPS OUTSIDE TO VIEW THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE DOESN'T HAVE A SCRATCH NOTHING SHOWING THAT WE HIT SOMETHING, HE LOOKED AT THE ROAD AND EVERYTHING WAS CLEAR. WE CALL OUR INSURANCE FOR A TOWING TRUCK AND THEY TOLD US TO CALL 911 FOR A FASTER SERVICE. WHEN I CALL 911 THEY TOLD ME THE POLICE WAS NOT ABLE TO GET INVOLVED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. AFTER 1 HOUR WAITING FOR TOWING TRUCK, MY HUSBAND DECIDES TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON, AND IT DID. NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ENGINE, TIERS, NOTHING. WE PULL THE SIDE AIRBAGS UP AND HOLD THEM WITH THE CAR WINDOWS AND DROVE TO THE DEALERSHIP. GM IS TELLING US THEY CAN'T FIND WHY DE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, BUT THEY TOLD ALLSTATE THAT WE MUST OFF HIT SOMETHING CLOSE TO THE FRONT DRIVER WHEEL, AND WE HAVE ALREADY RESEARCH ALL THE ISSUES, AND IT'S TELLING US THAT THE AIRBAGS CAN'T BE DEPLOYED FOR THAT REASON. WE WERE VERY LUCKY WITH SOME BRUISES IN OUR ARMS AND NECK, BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS HAS TO DO WITH ANY RECALLS OR SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONING.

I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC WHEN THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED ABRUPTLY IN FRONT OF ME. I READ ENDED HIM GOING ABOUT 40 MILES PER HOUR. MY AIR BAGS DID NOT INFLATE. I EXITED THE CAR AND BEGAN SPEAKING WITH THE OTHER DRIVER WHEN WE HEARD A POP IN MY CAR. SMOKE STARTING COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND THEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY MY CAR ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CAR WAS NOT RUNNING. I INJURED MY KNEE AND SHOULDER IN THE INCIDENT.

THE ENGINE OIL WAS JUST DETECTED AT 80,000 MILES HOWEVER I HAVE COMPLAINED THAT MY CAR DOES NOT RUN RIGHT SINCE THE BEGINNING. THEY CLAIM THAT THE ENGINE IS BURNING OFF THE OIL HOWEVER I AM VERY GOOD AT GETTING MY OIL CHANGES AROUND 3000 MILES AND WHERE IS THE OIL GOING? ITS NOT IN MY GARAGE OR ON THE ENGINE? I HAVE HAD MY CAR COMPLETELY GO BLANK ON THE DASH NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ETC. I HAVE FILLED A COMPLAINT WITH CHEVY TO NO AVAIL. THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE CLOSEST CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE AIRBAG CONNECTORS UNDER BOTH FRONT SEATS. THIS WAS A NEW VEHICLE AT THE TIME SO THE CONNECTORS SHOULD HAVE BEEN NEW. AFTER 2 AND A HALF YEARS LATER THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY APPLIED A DIELECTRIC GEL TO THE CONNECTIONS. AS I WAITED FOR MY VEHICLE, I WENT ONLINE AND NOTICED THIS HAS BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED WITH THIS CAR COMPANY AS A RECALL. WE TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED. AFTER A DAY OR SO WE RECEIVED THE VEHICLE BACK AND THE ALERT WAS GONE. TWO WEEKS AFTER TAKING IT IN TO GET FIXED, THE ALERT POPS UP AGAIN. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT ON 12 MAY 2014 THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS POPPED UP FOR THE FOURTH TIME IN FOUR MONTHS. IS THERE SOME SORT OF RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE OR THIS PART? OUR SERVICE AIRBAGS LIGHT CAME ON. WE WERE TOLD BY OUR LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER THAT THIS COULD DISABLE AIRBAGS. UNFORTUNATELY THERE WAS A 2 WEEK BACKORDER FOR NEW SWITCH. WE COULD NOT USE THE VEHICLE FOR 2 WEEKS, RENTED ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THEN SPENT $750 TO REPAIR THE SWITCH. OF NOTE, THIS IS THE SAME PART THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED WITH THE NEAR IDENTICAL SISTER VEHICLE, THE CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. "SERVICE AIR BAG" LIGHT HAS COME ON, AND THE WARNING CHIME GOES OFF EVERY 20 SECONDS. FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER TAKING DELIVERY OF THE NEW 2010 EQUINOX. OAKLAND, CA CHEVY DEALER INFORMED US THAT WITH THIS LIGHT ON, THERE IS NO AIRBAG PROTECTION. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED A "FAULTY MODULE". ABOUT ONE MONTH LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURS. I TRY CALLING THE OAKLAND DEALERSHIP TO BRING THE CAR IN, AND NO ANSWER. AFTER 2 WEEKS OF CALLING, I STOP BY DEALERSHIP AND IT'S CLOSED. I TAKE THE CAR TO THE NOVATO DEALERSHIP (40 MILES AWAY), THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM, BUT CANNOT PROVIDE A LOANER CAR BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW IT WILL TAKE LONGER THAN 6 HOURS TO FIX. I HAVE NO WAY OF GETTING HOME. SO I DRIVE THE CAR HOME (WITH NO AIRBAGS). I HEAR THE OAKLAND DEALERSHIP IS OPENING UNDER NEW OWNER, SO I WILL TAKE CAR BACK TO THEM WHEN THEY OPEN. AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE DRIVER'S INSTRUMENTATION ILLUMINATES WHEN TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW MID-20'S. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEGINNING IN LATE NOVEMBER OR EARLY DECEMBER 2010. THE DATE BELOW (JAN. 23, 2011) IS TODAY'S DATE, SINCE IT HAPPENED AGAIN THIS MORNING. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER, WHICH SAYS ONLY THAT THERE WAS A CODE BUT NO INDICATION AS TO WHAT IS WRONG. DEALER RESET CODE. ALSO CONTACTED ONSTAR WHEN IT OCCURRED AND RECEIVED A CODE BACK (B0023). DEALER VERIFIED THAT THEY PULLED THE SAME CODE. WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN NOVEMBER 2009, BUT HAD NO PROBLEMS THE FIRST WINTER. WE ARE NOW IN THE SECOND WINTER, WHEN THE PROBLEM SHOWED UP. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF SOMEONE IS SITTING IN PASSENGER SEAT OR NOT, AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE ARE DRIVING OR PARKED (IT ACTUALLY COMES ON WHEN WE START THE CAR IN VERY COLD WEATHER, SO THE CAR IS NOT MOVING AT THIS POINT). BUT THE AIR BAG LIGHT DOES ILLUMINATE (ALMOST A GUARANTEE) WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 25 DEGREES. AFTER DRIVING SEVERAL MILES OR SEVERAL MINUTES, THE LIGHT GOES OUT. I SUSPECT (AND THE DEALER CONCURS) THAT IT MAY BE WIRE HARNESS OR SENSOR CONTACTS THAT ARE SEPARATING IN EXTREME COLD (DUE TO METALLIC CONTRACTION). DEALER SAID THE FACT THAT THE LIGHT COMES ON SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM IF IT GOES OFF AFTER A WHILE. I CHALLENGED HIM ON IT AND ADDED, "YES, AS LONG AS THE VEHICLE IS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT DURING THAT TIME," AT WHICH STATEMENT DEALER SERVICE MAN HEM-HAWED AROUND. I THINK THIS IS AN ISSUE. *LN

THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CLEARED THE FAILURE CODES AND ADVISED THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT AND THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A REMEDY TO CORRECT IT. THERE WERE NO FURTHER REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,376 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 13,739.
