The wiper blade motor is gone out. The tire pressure sensor is off : the oil seems to disappear faster than the sensor
Clogged PCV caused engine pressure resulting in failure of rear main seal
I just got this used car in seemingly great shape, was told it was garage kept and well cared for. Dealer had oil changed before I drove it off the lot. I only had it about one month, had driven about 1,000 miles so far, I check the oil, and dipstick was nearly dry. I threw oil in it and took it for an oil change just in case. No oil leaks, etc. No indication, no oil light, nothing to alert me to low oil level. I saw here on NHTSA that these cars burn through excessive amounts of oil, and I definitely saw that firsthand. I’m wondering why no recalls exist when this is a well-known issue with these cars, and so many of them are dead at 50-70k miles…? The last two cars I had (Ford Escapes), had over 218k or 185k miles and they were still drivable when I got a replacement vehicle. Now I buy this used Equinox with almost 70k miles and I’m wondering if it is going to break down within the first year. I expect I will be buying lots of oil and checking/changing it often. This is not just an inconvenience, it can cause major safety concerns! I will not be a repeat Chevy customer!
This car used so much oil that I had to put it in constantly. Eventually the time belt broke, and the car stopped because it literally had no oil in it causing the engine to blow. This is a known problem I found out later on.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at 25 MPH, the vehicle vibrated and idled abnormally. The contact depressed the brake pedal, and the vehicle jumped unintendedly. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact continued to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the timing chain had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The independent mechanic advised the contact not to drive the vehicle. The failure became a recurring failure, and the contact parked the vehicle, and the vehicle was no longer driven due to safety concerns. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

The high pressure fuel pump leaking into crankcase and leaking gasket the fuel in the oil was so much it lit on fire.
oil consumption is bad. according to mechanic it has now caused problems with timing chain and tensioner. I have to get that replaced ASAP before engine ties up. There is a class action lawsuit in Missouri for same reason with cars like mine. My car has not even hit 114,000.
The concern is the oil consumption. The car looses a quart of oil a month. I average only 620 miles per month. There is no leak. A mechanic has been keeping track of it every month since April 2025. No warning lights alerted me of the problem. This has been an ongoing problem with the Chevy Equinox. My last one had the same problem but it was fixed thru a recall. It is frustrating for me to have to bring my car in every month to have it checked, because I am a caregiver for my husband and its hard for me to get away. I also use the car for his doctor appointments. I need a dependable car and can't afford a different one.
Coming home from a trip without any warning our 2016 equinox scared me when it made a terrible sound lost power and stopped working. We’re 100’s miles away from home on the side of a road in the dark. We called for towing to a dealer payed for a hotel waited till the next day for it to be looked at. Told the engine was blown that the timing belt and everything in there was bent and in pieces 10,000-12,000 dollars to replace. Mind you this car is a ltz and very well talking care of. Without fixing it it’s worth 1000.00. Shame on gmc we should have been notified about issues. This happens at 80,000miles No warranty. I actually thought it caught on fire. Gm step up and take care of your life long customer that have owned Chevy always.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard a loud sound coming from the vehicle with a gasoline odor coming from the engine compartment. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

I was driving my vehicle on the highway when all of a sudden I started to lose speed and my car wouldn’t accelerate. When my vehicle wouldn’t accelerate it started to shake significantly and the check engine, abs, traction control, and service stabilitrak light came on all at once. I was able to pull over and get my car towed to the dealership. Once it was at the dealership it was diagnosed that my car had jumped time causing a misfire in cylinder 4. My dealership stated this was due to low oil and my piston had become warped due to making contact with my valve. My car had no check oil warnings or any indication that vehicle was low on oil prior to this happening. My vehicle drove perfectly fine until that point. My vehicle also had no oil leaks (confirmed by myself not seeing any leaks under my vehicle as well as the dealership when they did the diagnostics). Before I bought my vehicle I did research and knew this model vehicle had oil consumption issues, so I made sure to routinely check my oil levels. Even with getting oil changes approximately every 3,000 miles and checking my oil levels and topping off my oil whenever it got less then 5 quarts I still had to get a total engine replacement. This was a huge safely issue since there was no warning that my oil was low and my car lost speed on the highway and was trying to stall out before I had a chance to pull off to safe place.
In Feb 2025, I was driving, a day after a snow storm, on the highway when without warning my car stopped accelerating, and just shut down. The mechanic said my oil was all over the ground. He also stated that there's a defect in the 2.4l ecotec motors and the pistons broke on my vehicle. Now I have to pay $3500 to rebuild my motor. He stated that the vehicle has a higher oil consumption rate/ leaks and you will never know
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and then stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 117,583.

The 2016 Equinox is not keeping oil in the engine. Therefore, the engine is unsafe and extremely dangerous - there is no warning! It will just stop in traffic! Life threatening to driver, passengers and other vehicles on the road.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle started making a ticking noise. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the mechanic informed the contact that the engine was low by two quarts of engine oil. On another occasion, the vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic for an oil change, and the engine was low by two quarts of engine oil. The following month the vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic, due to the vehicle hesitating to accelerate, the vehicle was diagnosed with excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was not repaired after the most recent failure. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 94,690.
Mileage: 94,690
Engines rear main seal failed and was replaced Freezing weather-15 degrees car will not run GM dealer that car was towed too Just a shutter no dash or any lights ever came on Repair by GM dealer said pcv valve froze resulting in dramatically increased oil pressure
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving on a rural road at 55 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact entered a nearby parking lot, where the vehicle was parked and inspected. The contact stated that there was an abnormal amount of oil leaking from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local independent mechanic, who diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the vehicle had experienced engine failure and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

When temperatures were around 0 degrees, I was driving to work and I started hearing a noise and the car was shaking. I oil all over the ground and checked the oil once parked, the dip stick had no oil and there was white foam under the oil cap. This issue could've cause me to lose control of my vehicle while driving, putting myself and anyone around me at risk. I had the vehicle towed to a dealership where they found out that the rear main seal failed. They replaced the rear main seal along with the front main seal and sent me on my way. I had no issues for the next month, but the weather went back below 0 degrees and the same issue happened again, this time there was ice found in the intake manifold. This repair is being completed now. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than the dealership. No warning light, messages or any other symptoms were present prior to the failure. The engine light DID NOT turn on when the seal "blew" but did turn on after turning the car off and back on.
On January 21st,2025 (a day where temps did not exceed zero degrees driving this vehicle 3/4 of mile home from work, as pulling down my street, engine began to run rough. No warning lights came on. i pulled in my drive and garage and turned off, there was an oil trail up my drive. After about an hour i looked under car and a HUGE puddle of oil was there. I then had it towed to Chevy dealer. They said it was the 3rd car with this same engine brought in that week, and same issue, a blown rear seal, and in my case damaged the engine quickly. we were told by other dealers that fire could have happened. After doing research, models 2004-2015 have the same exact engine and same exact Defect. the PVC intake valve can develop condinsation (the design does not allow this to escape) and on extreme cold days this can freeze, causing the pressure to build quickly and without warning blow the seal and damage the engine. In 2015 GM put out a service bulliten to dealers warning of this issue and fixed at no charge and also extended the warranty to 10 year 125000 miles (we are currently 8 years , 90K) GM did not change the Defect in this engine until the 2018 model years, GM did not contact any owners of 2016-2027 with the same exact engine and defect to fix or make aware it existed. There are hundred if not thousands of these engines with this defect on the road. It is all over GM related forums, the dealership service departments are aware of the issue as well. GM is refusing to fix my vehicle which now needs a new engine at cost close to $10K, For last month I have had to rent a vehicle for $300 per week at my cost while I fight with GM They have offered me a $1500 coupon to buy a new car, and now today offered $2000 towards the fix this is not acceptable to me. They are aware of the issue and have fully paid for and fixed the SAME EXACT issue all except 2016-2017 we think there should be an urgency to this matter
1. Excessive oil consumption! Adding one quart of oil every two weeks! 2. Timing chain replaced (TWICE) within 2 years! 2022/2023 3. Rear main seal replaced! 2022 4. VVT solenoid replaced because of rapid oil consumption causing metal shavings from engine! 2025 No warning lights just loud ticking all of a sudden and then engine shaking! Camshaft locked up and would not start, had to be towed to repair shop! This is a very dangerous engine (EcoTec 2.4L 4 cylinder) to drive with, as it can lock up or just fail causing an accident!
I'm aware of the history of oil consumption issues with Equinoxs, as this is my third one, but I am told by the mechanic who did the oil change that there are no leaks, yet there 8 day later, after the oil change has been preformed, there is absolutely no oil on the dip stick. I just bought this car from Showcase Auto Sales, in Chesaning, MI and they will not take it back, as they sell them as is. There was no oil then either.
There is a oil consumption issue with this vehicle and there are no warning indicators whatsoever that there is no-low oil If I hadn't caught it I would've blown my engine
no lights came on my car just became sluggish and I continued to drive up the road trying to get to safe spot to stop and it completely shut off on me I had to push out of road thankfully no one was behind me. I had towed to mechanic and he said my timing belt skipped and it had no oil has bent valves and piston damage and that I need a new engine
Driving vehicle on two days 1/21-1/22/25 both days had a high of zero degrees, vehicle say for 4 hours at work outside and then was driven the 1 mile home. As pulling down my street car started running rough. Pulled into my garage looked and there was a oil steak up my driveway . My wife called me and when I got home I looked under car and looked like several quarts of oil on floor under car. She said no warning lights came on. I had it towed the next day to a local garage. He inspected the vehicle and said rear seal was blown and that there is knock in engine , so basically shot. We bought the car new in 2016 and it has less the. 90k miles. I contacted Chevy and they said nothing is out about that year. I contacted local Chevy dealer and was told this is a known pvc freeze issue with equinoxes and this engine but it has not been recalled. There is a Chevy bulliten about this issue that is the same engine but the bulliten covers 2010-1014. This is the same exact issue in the same exact engine. On my hat service bulliten they have increased the warranty to 10year 100k and are covering the repairs. But they will do nothing and ignore the issue on every other vehicle with this engine and this flaw. Lucky my wife made it home safe I am having the car towed to a Chevy dealership and am prepared to leave it there and demand it gets fixed.
What started as my car guzzling just a little too much oil too quickly, turned into my engine sitting at 1200RPM while parked, and then yesterday all the oil had leaked out, oil pressure was very low and the car wouldn’t run, and I’m being told by my mechanic that I need a whole new engine.
This was the third time I have had my vehicle in the shop for the same exact issue - stalling while driving. This time we decided to take it to a Chevy Dealer who very quickly diagnosed the PCV System Freeze "causing the rear main seal to push out causing a major oil leak". Seeing as this issue is known in prior years, it is baffling why Chevy has not addressed this design flaw, which causes engine damage, nor have they chosen to included later models - such as my 2016 - in a recall. I am so very lucky that I started being aware of the warning signs and did not get on the highway to go home. It would have likely been a deadly incident in that case - I am not joking. This was a VERY expensive repair - especially considering this is the 3rd repair regarding the same issue.
Vehicle has an oil consumption issues which lead to a blown engines. Have been up to date on oil changes, just had an oil change 1 month ago and today the engine blew
We purchased a 2016 Chevy equinox with a 2.4 eco-tech engine in September 2023 for approximately $14,000 and 95,000 miles. In September 2024, our vehicle seemed to malfunction at a gas station. When my husband attempted to turn the car on, it sputtered and several different lights lit up the dashboard. The car wouldnt start and we had to have it towed. The shop informed us the next day that there was zero oil in the car and our engine had blown. This was extremely shocking to us as we had zero issues prior to this and had our oil and tires changed within the last month. Upon their inspection, they stated no oil in the car. We told them we had recently had it changed at an oil shop. A shop employee then informed us there were known issues with this type of engine and we should look into it. Upon further research, we discovered this engine had indeed experienced issues over the past several years. A lawsuit was apparently settled regarding the 2010-2013 vehicles and 2014-2017 were now also experiencing issues. There is a class action lawsuit going on in a southern state as well. I contacted the MN OIG office and they advised we file a complaint here. We still owed approximately 9,000$ when this happened. I contacted GM support at 866-366-2273 on 10/7 and spoke with rep Jasmine and supervisor Rochelle. They advised they cannot open a case for me unless I pay to have the car towed to a GM approved dealer and pay for a diagnostic. They stated it’s possible but not likely that I would receive any assistance due to the power train warranty am expiring at 60,000 miles. I advised I cannot afford to pay to have it towed a 3rd time and diagnosed again just in the hope they would be able to help. Prior to this happening, we did not experience any issues with the vehicle and it wasn’t indicating there were any issues (there were no lights on to show something wasn’t functioning properly).
It appears the 2.4L engine is burning oil at a high rate, leading to engine stutters, stalling, and outright engine failure. Our mechanic says if we didn't catch this in time, an engine without the proper amount of oil as a lubricant could stall, seize, and/or cause enough damage to warrant an entire engine replacement. If the engine quit on the freeway around Houston, TX, my wife would have been at great bodily risk. The mechanic suggested that there may be an extended warranty issued to GM Dealers to cover the 2016 Equinox 2.4L engine until 2026. The warning lamp was on for tire sensors, but no indication was given for the oil issue.
The 2.4L engine is burning oil at alarming rates, leading to consumers complaining about stutters, stalling, and outright engine failure. If not caught in time, an engine without the proper amount of oil as a lubricant can stall, seize, and/or cause enough damage to warrant an entire engine replacement. The engine is now blown. Chevy has known about this problem stemming since 2012 and has not addressed this with the American consumers.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
Mileage: 70,000
Engine consumed all oil and seized up, complete engine failure. We had just had a full synthetic oil change (and regularly did so according to manufacturer recommendations) 2,000 miles prior. This failure was not due to negligence. It appears to be a part of the same oil consumption issues with the 2.4L ecotech engine.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled, and the contact noticed a loud knocking sound coming from the engine with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with engine failure due to the engine not properly circulating the engine oil. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 159,000.
Mileage: 159,000
Maintained vehicle with regular oil changes, tire rotations and inspections. Last oil change was June of 2024. Minimal driving throughout summer as both drivers are teachers and home most of the summer. Vehicle engine light illuminated on 9/12/24 with no prior issues or lights illuminating. Vehicle then went into what felt like "limp mode." Vehicle was taken to certified Chevy dealership service center. Initial diagnosis indicated there was little to no oil left in the engine. No visible leaks were seen on driveway where it has been parked, no smell of burning oil occurred prior to engine light illuminating. Oil life monitor stated 65.89% remaining. Visible leak diagnosis passed inspection. Diagnosis of misfire/engine related concerns. While on phone with mechanic it was stated that pistons and rings were malfunctioning. Upon researching issues, I discovered that there is a well known issues within GM of this exact problem existing in which around roughly 90,000 miles (my vehicle is currently at 91,000+) this specific engine starts consuming oil at a massive rate without indicating any leaks or smells of burning oil. Service center quoted between $6500-$10000 to repair. After I provided feedback about what I had discovered, I was told by mechanic that this is a well known problem with this vehicle. Extended warranties for this issue has been issued however, I am being asked to cover the cost to repair a known problem within the 2011-2017 GM engines in the Equinox and Terrain models.
Timing chain issue same as 2015 and earlier current recalls. Happened aroun 68,000 miles. May stall pulling out from stop light. Mechanic diagnosed problem Car ran bad at idle and stopped in drive or reverse. Often stalled. Repaired 9/13/24 approx 3,500 bill.Stony Creek Auto Center, Reading, PA did repair. The timing chain kit and oil pump were replaced inpected by mechanic. Warning sign code P0017 and P0012. Yellow warning light.
Engine keeps failing, on a 3rd engine replacement. The car is defective and burns too much oil
My chevy equinox 2016 2.4L vehicle engine signal went on. Two days after the light went on, my vehicle stopped on my way to a dealership to ask for assistance. In the early years of purchasing this vehicle everything was working smooth. After the first 3-4 years I remember the mechanics asking if I had done my oil changes, and the answer was yes every time. Now that I started to look further into the issue Im finding out that this exact engine burns through oil way too fast and has cause issue like engine going out. This is a big issue for others on the street and myself, thankfully I was not on the highway at the time when the vehicle shut down on me but I am constatnly utilizing the highway to get around town. This can easily cause an incident in any road/highway if the vehicle had shut off at the wrong time and wrong place. The vehicle has not been inspected for the reasons I'm stating here, but have been noticed by mechanics when doing maintenance. I did not think much of it because I am not a mechanic and I just thought that was the normal for a vehicle to do over time. Now I'm getting quotes to replace the engine plus labor can run anywhere from 6-8 thousand dollars. There was not any warning lights or anything in regards to the engine earlier on, this happened a few days ago and shortly after my vehicle gave out. The engine light never flashed either, it would just stay illuminated, and from my understanding that's a warning to take it to a mechanic shop for further inspection. The amber engine light that im aware of is to not move the vehicle and get somewhere safe.
On December 26, 2022, while driving home from work during a snowstorm, my 2016 Chevy Equinox suddenly lost power and began making unusual noises. Shortly after, a warning light indicated low oil pressure, and the engine shut off before I could safely pull over. Since then, the vehicle has been sitting in my driveway. Recently, I had it checked by a dealership, where the mechanics diagnosed a blown rear main seal and significant oil leakage. The dealership confirmed that the rear main seal failure was caused by a faulty PCV valve, a known issue in these models, which resulted in excessive pressure buildup and engine damage. Given the severity of the issue, the dealership mentioned that an engine replacement might be necessary. If it’s just the rear main seal that needs replacing, the estimated cost is $2,700. The vehicle was purchased used with 55,000 miles on it and had only one previous owner.
Severe oil consumption which could lead to damage to engine and vehicle failure when driving, which could cause an accident or worse. The dealer stated that the rear main seal could blow out and cause the vehicle failure. Defective parts that GM is aware of, but not addressing to the owners. There is a service bulletin (14882) that dealers are aware of concerning this issue, for an extended warranty of 120,000 or 10 years, no charge to customers to repair. Part#12591866.crankshaft real oil seal. The dealer refuses to honor it.
Vehicle began to run rough and jerk forward at slow speeds or when stopped. This unexpected jerking forward when stopped occurred several times almost causing the vehicle to strike the one in front of it No dashboard warning lights we observed. Check oil and found it was 3 quarts low despite being changed and topped off a few weeks earlier. Had a mechanic inspect the vehicle for signs of leaks and he found none. Added 3 quarts until read full on dipstick and began to monitor oil consumption. Vehicle is consuming approximately 1 quart of oil every 400 miles. This is a well maintained vehicle with only 83,000 miles and should not be consuming this much oil. A quick search shows this is a common problem with this model and year, but not recall has yet been issued
The vehicle burns oil causing engine failure. This issue occurs without warning (no oil light, and the check engine light appears moments before the vehicle dies). The vehicle burns oil and reaches engine failure even when regularly scheduled oil changes are completed. THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND RESULT IN A RECALL.
Excessive oil use. After 500 miles on a new oil change oil needs to be added. Usually 1 quart every 500 miles.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle decelerated to 40 MPH unintendedly and the vehicle stalled. The contact pulled over. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact used an ODB scanner and retrieved several DTC codes. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact of piston rods failure and that the sensor shutdown the engine. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming excessive amounts of engine oil. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.
Mileage: 116,000
Timing chain tensioner broke. Fortunately, my wife stopped driving it so the engine didn't blow up.
Exhaust manifold cracked leaking dangerous fumes into the cabin.
This vehicle has a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor and/or an issue with the engine temperature gauge. The main issue is that the design of the 2.4 ecotec engine is defective in the opinion of many mechanics and equinox/terrain owners. The engine burns off more oil than is considered safe. I was advised not to run the oil consumption test by the DEALERSHIP. My experience is, I heard a sound in the engine and upon checking the oil, discovered NO OIL present!!! I had over 1000 miles left on my oil service sticker. There was no indication other than my own observation of a sound. No temperature change, the temperature gauge should have been reading hot, but was at normal. No oil light... like literally no oil sensor light present on the console. This was pretty upsetting to find out. The damage is done and I am out a vehicle over it as the damage is caused to the ENGINE/PISTONS. The timing chain is INSIDE the engine housing and THIS is the defect in the design. Oil splashes over into places it should not be, causing corrosion and combined with the fact that it is burning off this oil and causing damage because of lack of oil as well. The solution, is a nominal offer of 10% off this KNOWN issue and bill for a new engine. This is not ok. I am at 101k miles so just out of the zone for lemon laws, but this is a serious design issue and will cause severe hardship to those who own these vehicles. The recall is for previous years than my own, the issue is the same. The vehicle is NOT SAFE TO DRIVE without the proper indications that the oil is being burned off and damaging the engine.
Engine Oil had burned off, no notification of loss of engine oil to fill or maintain. engine is now required to be replaced.
I had just bought my vehicle, 2016 Chevy Equinox LT, as I was driving it home, not even 20 minutes, it had completely ran out of oil and the engine blew, according to the dealer he had just filled the oil before we bought it. I cannot fix the vehicle due to cost and it almost caused an accident when it suddenly stopped driving in the middle of the road.
Oil burns at an alarming rate, no low oil warning. Engine blew up & was rebuilt. A month after engine rebuild, vehicle started to throw the same codes that led to engine failure. I can't keep oil in my vehicle, it has stalled numerous times on busy highway & once at an intersection with my kids in the vehicle. O2 sensors keep frying, catalytic converters keep clogging. Faulty rear main seal valve. Oil is leaking into combustion chamber which has caused manifold issues, spark plugs keep frying. Engine constantly misfires. Frequent engine knocking. My vehicle also seems to have no low oil warning light either. I remember getting an oil change, roughly a month in a half later i checked it again and my dip stick was bone dry. Chevy is aware of defects, but they refuse to do anything for the thousands of customers who have complained about the same exact things I am. There are numerous lawsuits for this exact issue, unfortunately not in my state. The value of my vehicle has dropped substantially to the point I am now upside down with my loan. I've looked into trading it in and my highest offer was $1,500 because of the issues that have been reported. There are so many people dealing with this same exact problem and we are all being ignored. I can't even go trade my vehicle in for something that will actually run without me having to dump hundreds of dollars into it every few months. Not only that, but these defects are extremely dangerous! My vehicle completely shut off while i was driving roughly 60-65mph in crazy/speeding traffic in the middle of rush hour & I had my two little girls with me. When help finally arrived, it was discovered that yet again, there was no oil in my vehicle even though I added roughly 2.5 quarts within a month in a half of this incident occurring. My vehicle over heated... this is absolutely uncalled for and isnt something that happens because of owners negligence. Someone please help!!!
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while her son was driving approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine had failed due to extremely low engine oil. The contact was informed that the engine oil was four quarts low. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the regularly scheduled oil changes were always performed on the vehicle and that the engine had experienced excessive oil consumption. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000. The contact stated this could have been a VERY serious problem had the engine failed while her son was on the freeway traveling 70 MPH instead of only driving 20MPH. The contact had the engine rebuilt for over $8,000 and GM offered me a "Goodwill offering" of a little over $400, but contact declined the offer.

The vehicle stopped middle of traffic, engine light came on. Took ti mechanic states need a new engine 100,000 2016. Diagnosed no oil, engine burning oil, it stutters.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while inspecting under the hood, it was discovered that oil had leaked into the engine compartment. The contact discovered that the vehicle had experienced excessive oil consumption and extra quarts of oil were required and added to the engine every two days. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced a faulty sensor, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 118,000.

Problem first appeared with the limp mode being initiated by the vehicles computer system. This occurred at 96,000 miles in July of 2021. After running numerous diagnostics with a OBD scanner, and removing VVT solenoids, came to the conclusion it was the problem. After replacing with new OEM Solenoids and restarting the computer from the battery. The problem seemed to be resolved. In March of 2021the vehicle started losing oil by the quart each week. January 2022 the computer link initiated the limp mode again at 100,000 miles. After trying to diagnose using OBD, the conclusion was not apparent. Followed up by taking the air box off and found oil in the vacuum line for the air box. Continue the investigation by removing the PCV valve and the VVT solenoids. Found large amounts of oil(more than Chevy engineers allowed). Then proceeded to reassemble and run compression tests. Found "blow by" to be so bad that the oil was blowing out of the valve cover and past the seal. Disassembled the intake manifold and found puddles of oil in the base of the intake manifold. The MAF system had large amounts of carbon build up. Cleaned intake components meticulously. Reassembled and problem went away only to reemerge with massive oil loss September of 2022. Took to the dealer and they kept vehicle an entire week to report they found no oil loss. We then decided to rebuild engine; seals, pistons, rings, bolts etc.. After removing engine (January 2023 113,000miles) completely and breaking it down to crankshaft, I came to the conclusion the Intake manifolds direct injection system has a major flaw (mainly due to a pinhole becoming clogged found in the middle of the intake valve system). Causing massive pressure issues that can lead to full engine failure. So much carbon build up on pistons with major ignition problems visible by piston damage. In February of 2024 (131,000miles). Problem has started to reoccur with much blow by continuing near valve seal. I have pics
Due to an oil consumption issue the engine failed while there was still 1000+ miles before the next oil change was due. There was no warning light indication that the vehicle needed oil. Needed to replace the entire engine. After engine was replaced we were required to monitor the oil consumption consistently. The issue continued and oil had to be monitored and changed more often than manufacturer recommendations. The vehicle was brought to an independent service center who then performed the work to replace the engine. Before the vehicle was brought to an independent service center we went directly to the Chevy Dealer that we bought the vehicle from. They wanted nothing to do with it and did not even offer to inspect the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed at the drive-thru, the engine made a knocking sound. The vehicle then lost motive power and failed to restart. No warning light was illuminated. Additionally, after the vehicle had an oil change at the dealer, the engine started consuming an excessive amount of oil, causing frequent oil changes every 3,000 miles. The oil life monitor system displayed 60% of oil remaining; however, when the vehicle was taken to Walmart for an oil change, the contact was informed that there was no oil in the engine. The vehicle also jerked while driving. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

[XXX] I drove to work 9.8 miles. It was very cold that week, Zero temps. During my drive I experience intermittent power surges/loss, horrible exhaust filled the vehicle to the point I had to open windows. NO ENGINE LIGHTS ever came on. I called repair shop and scheduled to bring it in after work. They notified me that the main rear engine seal had blown and caused the oil to leak all out and ruined my engine. The cost to repair/replace engine is going to be $6k. This was a very dangerous situation. I often drive with my daughters and grandchildren in my vehicle. We could have been in a serious accident if I had lost power on the freeway. Or, could have been stranded on the side of the road in zero temps. Upon researching this issue, there is an ongoing lawsuit, , et al.,[XXX] v. General Motors LLC.Case [XXX]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed the local mechanic who diagnosed that the timing chain had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,000.

According to the GM Certified Technician our 2016 Chevy Equinox had frozen PCV valves. On the day this happened temperatures were in the single digits. This caused the rear seal to blow and drain the oil from the engine while being driven. Engine shut off completely while driving (after driving 30+ miles) on the highway. We had to have the car towed. The technician said this is a known issue with the ecotech 2.4 liter engine, “but good luck getting Chevy to do anything for you.” The engine has to be replaced at a cost of $9200. More than the blue book value, and I still owe on it.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard an abnormal sound. The contact drove the vehicle to the destination. The contact parked the vehicle and checked the engine oil level. The contact became aware of a pasty substance on the end of the dipstick. The contact was taken to get oil to top off the engine oil. The contact stated that while driving, the low oil pressure and stop engine warning lights illuminated. The contact parked and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with a failed PCV valve. The contact was informed that the PCV valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that after the vehicle was repaired, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 133,000.

WHILE DRIVING DURING A SHORT SPELL OF TEMPERTAURES AROUND 0 DEGREES THE REAR MAIN SEAL ON THE ENGINE BLEW OUT. THIS WAS DUE TO CONDENSATION FREEZING IN PVC PORT OF ENGINE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM I GUESS THAT CHEVROLET IS AWARE OF ON THE 2.4 LITER ECO TECK ENGINE. IF I HAD KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM, I WOULD NOT HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR IN THESE CONDITIONS. WHEN IT DUMPED THE OIL, I WAS ABLE TO GET STOPPED BEFORE MAJOR DAMAGE OCCURED. THERE WAS NEVER ANY WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER THE INCIDENT. WHY HAVEN'T THE OWNERS BEEN MADE AWARE IF THIS PROBLEM? WHY DOESN'T CHEVROLET COVER THE COST OF THIS DESIGN FLAW?
My car blew out the rear main oil seal due to a faulty pcv valve that froze over in zero degree weather. The car lost all of its engine oil. There were no engine warning lights on before or after this happened. It has been diagnosed at the used dealer ship I got the vehicle from. It's currently at the shop but can be inspected if need be. My personal safety was at risk because it happened on the way to work and could have left me stranded. I also have had to rent a car for the last few weeks due to this issue. The car showed no warning signs of having prior issues of any sort before this happened.
Motor is sucking oil, no leak, to the point where check engine light comes on and oil is empty within weeks of an oil change. Must drive with extra oil in car because it is constantly low. When this occurs, car tries to stall out when stopped and in Drive.
Was driving home and without prior warning received a message on the dash to pull over low oil pressure. Vehicle was towed to the dealership and I am being told I that GM has a known issue of freezing PCV in cold temperatures which causes the rear main seal to blow and other internal issues. I know am told this will be a $5600 repair and no coverage. GM has lawsuits and other numerous complaints about this issue.
The rear main seal on our 2016 Chevrolet Equinox blew a second time in January 2024. The vehicle was driven about 30 miles after startup after leaving it at an airport for five days when the rear main seal blew again leaking oil. The first time the rear main seal blew was in February 2020 when the engine had only 46,000 miles. Both incidences occurred when the temperatures were near zero degrees. The same issue occurred after the vehicle had an additional 54,000 miles or approximately 100,500 total miles on the odometer. Apparently, the PVC valve gets clogged during normal cold temperatures in Michigan and created too much pressure inside the engine. This engine should not be sensitive to normal winter climates. I believe this would not have occurred if the PVC valve was on the exterior of the engine. Our trust in our vehicle's engine is waning. We don't want other Equinox owners to experience this and we don't want this issue for a third time. Please help us as I believe it should have been a recall issue. The car dealership said this was the third Equinox brought into their shop this week. The estimate for repairs is $3,156.
I was driving my teenage daughter’s car in negative temperatures in a snow storm. During the drive home from work I started to hear a tick noise and thought the wheel well must have snow built up in it and the tire was making the noise. I made it about two more miles down the road when it really started making a loud growling noise from the engine. I pulled over in the negative temperatures and looked under the hood and could see engine oil everywhere. I had no warning lights that were on , just oil everywhere and no oil on the dipstick. I had to wait along the highway in the negative freezing temperatures waiting for someone to come pick me up with a car I couldn’t run for any heat. I had the car towed to the nearest Chevy dealer and they said that the PVC port froze which created crankcase pressure and blew out the rear main seal. Luckily, I shut it off in time and it did not blow the engine. They told me on the 2.4L engine this is a common problem and they had three other ones in there for the same thing with the cold weather we were having. This is a flawed design that Chevy knows about that could put people’s safety at risk and they will not do anything about it. These engines need to have a recall on them, but Chevy won’t do it because it is such a money maker for them. It cost close to $3000 to have this fixed and wonder when it will happen again, because it will happen again in cold weather. I would stay away from Chevy products unless you have a big wallet for expensive repairs. I hope they get enough implants to force a recall on this well known problem on the 2.4L engines.
During cold weather my rear main seal failed and and I cannot drive the car my because it loses all of the oil in it. It will cost over $1900 to repair. This is a known issue of equinox’s and the equinox’s with this motor should be recalled for poor design. Three body shops in my town will not do this repair on this car because “it will just happen again”
The contact's uncle owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle previously had an oil change performed; however, the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Was driving on the highway and the car lost power and shut down and wouldn’t start again. It was towed to a mechanic where I was told the timing jumped and I needed a new engine. I bought the car used in 2018 and not even 2 months after the car was burning oil the car started shaking and eventually stalled. At that point it was still cover under warranty
Had issue with it burning a TON of oil, solenoid ended up needing replaced. Replaced, and next day engine froze up and shot oil out of the back real seal, and now need replaced engine. Because the back real seal blew, is not being covered by my extended warranty, even though the damage was cause because of a covered part.
My car is a 2016 chevy equinox - the check engine light never came on and I was driving it home from the store when it started bucking, showing "power to engine low" error message and barely moved when pressing the gas. I got the car home and my husband was checking the car only to find I have no oil when I never received any warning. I have done research and have seen this is an issue for many chevy equinox owners who all experienced this with their cars. I just had an oil change completed a few months ago in early Sept/Late August with very minimal driving in the 4 month window as I was out of work for 2 of those months. I do believe this is a defect in the car due to the fact that I was out of oil so quickly PLUS no alert informing me that the oil was low prior to the issue with the vehicle. now it will not start and the engine appears to be trash now.
With no warning my 2016 equinox’s engine began to fail functioning, reduced engine power warning displayed, then the vehicle stalled and would not restart. Professional mechanical review has indicated excessive oil consumption and timing chain issues regardless of a regular documented maintenance and oil changes
I was driving home from work, all of sudden all the dash borad lights started flashing and the car stop. engine would not start back up. I had to have the car towed home and the next day it was towed to the dealership, I was told that there is a problems with the Chev Equinox's oil use, it burns fast and make the plastic parts in the engine break down. I was told that i will need timing chain and pitston replaced or new engine. i filed a complaint with GMC and they said that they don;t know of any problems with the type of car engine that i have. GMC said they will pay $600, toward cost of my repairs about $6500. dollars.
The engine has failed. This problem is known by Chevrolet Corporation. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection. My safety was put at risk when my vehicle just shut down. This problem with the 2.4 Engine, is a known problem by GM.. About 2 years ago I noticed some oil spots. I then took it to a certified mechanic and had it inspected. They told me that the gaskets and seals of the engine were bad and they needed to be replaced. I had them replaced and it cost me almost $3000.00 out of my pocket. Now, once again, there are oil spots and now there is oil all over the right side (looking at the car from the front) (alternator side). I was driving back home from my daughter's (at night) and my car just quit on me. There were no warning lights nor any sounds. I am now out of a vehicle. I desperately need a vehicle for doctor appointments down state and I am a caregiver as well. I reached out to Chevrolet Support a bit ago. I have the case number. I am requesting for Chevrolet to make this right. I am requesting Chevrolet Manufacturer replace the engine in my vehicle. They know of this problem with the engine and oil consumption.
Timing chain issues with 2016 Chevy equinox with the echo Tech engine problem with automobile stalling out and running rough at idle. Occasionally will stall out while stopped .
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the engine oil level was extremely low. The contact stated that the engine had experienced oil consumption failure and engine oil was constantly being added to the engine. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 60,000.

This vehicle has no leaks and no console indicators to let me know of this issue. The vehicle burns more oil than is acceptable. Was empty with no indication and no oil change due. Dealership admits to faulty design that burns too much oil. Gm admits and agrees to pay a small amount of the cost. Nominal and honestly not acceptable either since I have on record keeping up to date with all maintenance.
While driving my 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, it completely shut down. I was luckily not on a busy road, at the time, I was able to coast part way of the road. Had I been in traffic, and stopped so abruptly, I most likely would have caused an accident. I had it towed back to my house, and then I had to pay someone to haul to dealership to be looked at. Upon Inspection, was told almost completely out of oil, although no low oil, check engine oil indicator light came on. Was also told there were bent valves, and broken rocker arms. They said this is a common problem with this particular motor in similar vehicles. Burning excessive oil, causing major damage to the engine. After reading several complaints, it is easy to see the 2016 Equinox motor has major flaws. We have yet to give go ahead to fix, because price of repair is unknown. A new engine and install could be $8,000. My Equinox had 84,447 miles on it, when this happened. This should not be the life of a motor. Especially with regular oil changes, and maintenance, which it had. I would hate to see it take a fatality, for this engine to be recalled
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The message “Engine Power Reduced” was displayed. The contact was able to pull over near to the shoulder of the roadway. The Police assisted the contact in pushing the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was then towed to the residence and then towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the engine was blown. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 157,000.

Always changed my oil every 3000-5000 miles. Almost Never had any check engine lights. Replaced a few sensors. A battery. Was a good vehicle until it died in the beginning of January. Stuck on the side of the road with oil coming out of my car According to the mechanic i took it to Engine failure due to "frozen" pcv valve causing front and rear main seals to blow. Lost all my oil. Also have a rod knock now. and they recommended whole engine replacement. For $6000-8000. Stuck with a crappy car and making payments on it. Way to go Chevrolet!
Despite not being due for an oil change, the low oil pressure light came on. Then there was a loud sound, smoke came out of the exhaust and the engine started smoking and rattling and then the engine stalled. I had it towed and the mechanic told me there was no oil in the engine, even though there had been earlier in the day. The mechanic told me that this is a known problem with the 2016 Equinox. They are known to burn oil and the engine will stop without warning. Luckily, I was at a place where I could safely pull over. But I was told the engine is blown and it is no longer drivable. I bought used less than two years ago with less than 70k miles on it. It currently has just over 103k miles on it. The fact that this is a known problem and such a huge problem is upsetting. The manufacturer needs to be held accountable.
Engine started with fuel injectors starting leaking out of injector. Then codes started popping up. Bad fuel rail - misfire - imbalanced below threshold catalyst system efficiency. All caused by crack on exhaust manifold. The cost was substantial. This is known on many equinox. Look on media to see.
Engine problems . Oil problems. Metal shavings in the oil and took to a mechanic and they said it needs a new engine. Also the heater isn’t working. Check engine light would go on and off. Had the oil changed beforehand. Says reduced engine power. Took daughter to work stopped at gas station and shut it off came back out and wouldn’t start had to have it towed home.
I purchased a 2016 Equinox in April of 2019 and had no problems until November of 2022. The check engine light came on and the car kept stalling out on me. I took it to my mechanic, and he told me I needed a new intake solenoid. I did purchase an extended warranty and called them immediately. They told me where to take the car for repair. I did and they repaired it under warranty, but they never explained why it was running rough. They just told me that I should get an oil treatment with my next 2 oil changes. Fast forward to August 2023. The engine light came on again. I was due for my oil change and went to my mechanic. He said the engine was burning up. The oil wasn't even showing on the dip stick. He had to replace the intake, exhaust solenoid and crank sensor, plus change the oil, but this didn't resolve the problem. Coming home from work, 3 days later, it started making loud noises and stalling when I stopped. The engine light and StabiliTrak light came on. The instrument cluster said engine working at 1/2 Power. I don't know how I made it home, but it did. I have a 7-year-old car with 64,000 miles on it and have a balance on my loan. The standard and extended warranties have expired. I did call GMAC and all I was told was that it was past the warranty period. After having it towed to a Chevy dealership, I was told that it would cost me over 5K to fix it, without any guarantee on parts & labor, or over 9K to replace the motor which would come with a 3 year, 100,000-mile warranty. GM would be willing to help me with 4K towards the new motor only. Unfortunately, I don't have enough to cover the rest, and I still have to pay the balance on my loan. It's very sad that one of the biggest Auto manufacturers won't stand behind their product. They sold these cars knowing that there was a problem with the engines, and no one is holding them accountable. They've had 3 class action lawsuits filed against them, but nothing has changed.
Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles are plagued by a defect that causes the SUVs to burn or consume excessive amounts of oil, leading to a risk of catastrophic engine damage and serious safety concerns. This is a problem with certain Equinox, mine incldued. The recalls should not be by state, if there is a problem we should be able to take to dealer and get tested and if it fails they fix it. they know it's a problem but figure if we can get away with not paying that will be great for GM. Will definitely not by a Chevy again.
Exhaust Muffler/Resonator leaking causing loud exhaust. Need to replace resonator back with muffler and clamps.
Piston rings failure and excessive oil consumption Car stalled on a side road. had the cylinder tested for compression and only had 100psi no warning lights at all
It doesn't make sense how much oil this thing burns. We just had the oil changed last month and prior to that we've replaced the solenoids. Why in heavens did this vehicle stall out yesterday when my husband was driving on the highway saying engine power reduced. This vehicle is costing a fortune. There is truly something wrong with these engines! This could have cause a major crash. Thank goodness no one got hurt.
I was driving my car and it just stopped working it wouldn’t turn over at all! I heard about recalls with the engine that has something to do with the oil burning to fast. I took it to the dealership and had a warranty on it but they said it was only a one year warranty and it would be 6000 for a new engine.
Get an oil change with recommended oil and schedule. Last oil change around 74k miles, there was no oil on dipstick. A week later, check engine light came on and stalled immediately. Oil level fine as it was just replenished a week prior, however now in need of cam shaft actuator repairs- which mechanic believes are attributable to the high oil burning. This needs to be addressed by Chevrolet.
I purchased my vehicle in October 2022 and in April 2023 I was driving on the freeway and the SUV turned off there were no warnings no difference in any other time I was driving all that happened right before the car turned off it was a big huge noise coming from the engine like something exploded or like a loud bang so I get my vehicle towed to GMC and the mechanic described my damage as catastrophic he had stated that he pissed in out of the engine basically causing a hole in it I'm not too entirely familiar with cars but prior is happening I had just had an oil change and I mean it might have been 30 days but I don't think it has been quite 30 days there was no life that came on in my dash I have OnStar services all of my diagnostic reports were normal so I was just completely shocked not to mention I still owe $17,000 on my vehicle so I am devastated
excessive oil consumption
70,000 miles on vehicle. The engine has consistently burned excessive oil averaging 1 quart per 1,000 miles. The oil low warning light does not detect the low oil. The excessive consumption is potentially damaging to the car resulting in "bucking" at low speed, fouling of spark plugs and loss of power and efficiency.
Without any notification, alert, or code, the engine started making a ticking/knocking noise. When starting the vehicle later that day it completely stalled. Mechanic has said it was very low on oil and that is common with this year/model. The engine has failed and needs replacing/rebuilding.
the PCV is popping out which is causing all the oil to drain out and causing expensive repairs and leaving the car dead on the road ther needs to be a recall on this
In 2022, I had scheduled oil changes and I noticed my 2016 Equinox was burning oil at an alarming rate. I was adding oil every 1,000 miles and again after an oil change; and I could not keep the oil level up. In December 2022, my engine engine light came on , it was showing a P00016 code and after that code materialized, the engine died while driving. It was on a busy road and could have caused an accident. My mechanic has confirmed the "oil pressure sensor" issue and unfortunately, they do not do top engine work. I have had an excellent record of oil changes and routine service performed on this vehicle. Please issue a recall for this oil /Camshaft/Crankshaft position sensor repair.
Vehicle has an ongoing extreme oil leak, to the point where it will dump out oil and soak the undercarriage of the car. The position of this oil leak bleeds on to the alternator. Car is currently in the shop getting estimates for repairs, but there are 96 god damn engine complaints on this year of the vehicle alone. NINETY. SIX. The way the SUV froze up and completely failed during the drive, it's miraculous that nobody hit the car as it failed in the middle of the road. Everyone on the road is at risk, drivers and passers-by, in the presence of this monstrosity, because there are NO warning signs when it finally decides to fail. It just does. I am just angry enough with enough momentum to pursue legal action and I believe every other driver of these SUVs should as well.
Ongoing problems with oil consumption despite repairs and frequent checking of oil and oil changes. The check engine light appeared shortly after purchase in 3/2019. I've visited at least 3 different service centers since purchasing and they have all identified issues with the engine/oil. My vehicle became inoperable on 3/10/2023 and would not start; it had to be towed to an independent service center. The most recent repair estimate started at $2,900 for a remanufactured engine, labor not included. The center I had my vehicle towed to reported this was the third vehicle (another 2016 Equinox and a 2015 GMC Terrain) they've encountered within the past few months that had the same issue. My vehicle is available for inspection as I cannot make any more costly repairs for a vehicle with a known issue.
Check engine light comes on. Extremely low oil in car. No alerts of oil pressure problems. Oil replaced by mechanic x 2. Thorough engine diagnostics run. This has happened x2 in 6 weeks.
My 2016 Chevy Equinox started running rough and when the codes were run it came back with P0335, P0016 and P0017. We then replaced both the camshaft, crankshaft and vvt solenoids. The codes were then cleared, and no further issues or engine lights were on. Then I brought the car home the weather was extremely cold, and the vehicle would not start. Tried to jump the vehicle would not start. Towed the vehicle to the shop, where it was determined that the PVC was frozen which caused all the oil to drain from the engine, the timing belt seized up and caused total engine failure. The mechanic has stated that it needs a whole new engine as all the oil had drained from the vehicle and cause damage that cannot be repaired. These vehicles have faulty piston rings in them and also it is common for the vehicles to be useless and have to have a total engine replacement. The cost for the engine replacement and vehicle repair is 9000 to 11000 dollars. Chevy intentionally has been mass producing vehicles that can and will kill someone. This is a known issue that they need to make right for all the owners of these vehicles. Please do a full investigation as to why these vehicles are still on the road and Chevy has not been made to recall and fix these vehicles correctly.
Hearing a noise while driving May 2022 took my car to Chevy Dealership they told me my vehicle is consuming Oil no leaks not sure where oil is going. Quoted me over $5k to troubleshoot said it was common and offered me $1k to trade my car. I didn’t agree and continued to check my oil filling my oil weekly when I pumped gas. December 8th i was driving on hwy when my traction control and check engine light came on and running rough. I pulled over had my car towed days later took it to a shop. It was there for over a month cost me $2k they asked for another $2k to continue to research and fix the problem. Engine replacement estimate for refurbished motor cost $10k I didn’t agree had it towed back home still unresolved. it has been there since. Injector 4 is stuck open and it’s misfiring. Still paying it off and without a car.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The cam shaft was replaced but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated the cam shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the mechanic replaced the timing belt, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic and the timing belt was replaced again, but the failure persisted. The engine power reduced message was illuminated. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 64,000. The contact stated that this is not their vehicle or their complaint.

Vehicle requires excessive amounts of oil. Which cause the engine to lock up and engine block.
The car started burning oil excessively and I did not know it. I’ve always kept up with my oil changes and was never informed that my oil was low or anything. The engine basically blew up with only 96,000 miles on it. There was zero oil in when the mechanic looked at it. I was not even due for an oil change.
During my recent travel after a few short miles, oil began to leak and the engine began to knock. After the engine stalled, I was able to restart and begin to drive around 20 miles per hour when the engine stalled and cut off again as I was on my way to the repair shop. I noticed during this time that the car was leaking oil. The following was revealed after receiving a diagnostic test performed by the repair shop that the engine suffers from internal damage/massive oil leak and it is not recommended attempting to repair. Repairs are estimated to be due more than $6K without guarantee that the vehicle will not repeat the same problematic performance. Upon some investigation, it has been revealed that my vehicle is among the many 2014-2017 Chevy Equinox models that are plagued with the same 2.4L engine/oil consumption defect. Coupled with the fact that these vehicles are extremely dangerous as there is no set warning when itay choose to stop working during operation, therefore running the risk of causing a catastrophic accident/s. The failure mileage was at 126,277.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. Upon inspecting the hood of the vehicle, the contact noticed that there was oil on the ground. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

Car is burning more oil than it is suppose to on my vehicle. I have to add oil every other week.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving in a rainstorm with the front windshield wipers activated, the wipers suddenly became inoperable. The contact stated that the failure only occurred while the wipers were operating in the high position. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact stated that on another occasion while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light suddenly illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine had experienced excessive oil consumption. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

I was driving the vehicle from Madison, WI to Janesville, WI on the interstate. The car was operating normally until about 35 minutes into my drive. I heard unusual noises coming from the vehicle and I started to feel more resistance then normal while accelerating. I checked the dash for any indicator lights or high temperature but nothing was indicated. I exited the interstate and noticed the car was not accelerating normally. While stopped at a stop light the vehicle stalled, but powered back on after restarting. About a mile up the road the vehicle stalled again, but again restarted. I was less than a mile from my destination. After parking the vehicle at my destination, oil was observed gushing out from above the real driver's side wheel well. The vehicle had an odor. It was determined an intake value burst causing an oil leak. After the intake valve was repaired it was determined a chain snapped in the engine, and the engine was also in need of repair. The intake valve has been retained. The vehicle stalled while in use multiple times putting me and my family at risk for an accident. Had a dashboard indicator light illuminated, I would have immediately pulled over. Yes the problem was confirmed but a dealer that inspected the vehicle.
Car would not start one morning. The battery was replaced about a month ago. Had a mechanic come and check and had error code P0016. The mechanic ran through what he could but he could not get it started and suggested we tow to a shop. We towed the vehicle to the nearby Chevy dealership. They stated the engine failed and will need to be replaced and was quoted 6500-8000 to replace. This car is only 6 years old and has 84,000 and is maintained. Chevy is selling cars with bad engines.
I was driving my vehicle after a few minutes it shut off on me and I was able to get it restarted. Later that day, the engine leaked out 3 quarts of oil so we towed it to the shop. Shop said the rear main seal was busted, and shop reported that the pcv orifice in the intake manifold gets plugged and freezes when cold, cause crank case pressure to increase. Shop recommended the change of both the intake manifold and the rear main seal.
First noticed my car had a slight rattle when accelerating. I was driving about 35 and then the engine cut out on me. I got it restarted but when I did, check engine light came on, my stabilitrack light came on, and my car went in what the shop called “limp mode.” Towed the car to the shop where they reported the engine was short 3.5 quarts of oil (last oil change was approximately 3500 miles prior to issue). Codes the vehicle was throwing were camshaft exhaust performance and fuel pressure regulator performance. Aforementioned rattling noise was the timing chain kit. Shop noted high oil consumption with no oil leaks at the time of inspection. Shop recommended replacing camshaft actuators and solenoids, as well as timing chain kit. Shop noted it wasn’t an entirely uncommon issue that they’ve seen with these vehicles.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. My 17 yr old daughter drives a 2016 Equinox and this car was purchased brand new in 2016. There has been no issues with the car until this past Christmas eve when the car started to make a rattle noise and completely stopped while she was driving down the road (that in itself could have been a whole other issue if someone would have wrecked into her). The current mechanic said that the rear main seal blew on the car and it has been a huge problem with this make and model. He has fixed several. He told me I need to find out if Chevy is going to do a recall since so many others have had the same problem. Chevy was contacted and they said no recall has been issued and I need to contact Department of Motor Vehicles to get info. I did some research and came across a Class Action Lawsuit where 7 plaintiffs are suing General Motors filed on April 12, 2022 (Kiriacopoulos et al. v. General Motors LLC - 2:22-cv-1078) for this exact issue and there is more than just Equinox on the Lawsuit. Can we please get this recalled. The amount to fix this design issue with the car is starting $2,000-$4000 and could be more if it damaged the engine.
This is my second submission hoping someone contacts me [XXX] Thanks INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who determined that the PCV valve was clogged due to the cold weather. The clogged PCV valve caused the rear main seal to fail. The mechanic informed the contact that the PCV valve and rear main seal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

My car has had multiple safety issues but the latest one is my car shut off while driving! I was able to start it again and get to a dealer when they said that there was no oil. I get my oil changed every 3,000 miles and the dealer said there is a known oil consumption issue with my car. It gave me no warning of low oil or anything. The dealer said I probably would have known it consumes alarming amounts of oil if I had followed the 5k miles suggested. They said I need to do a oil consumption test well before I even got to 3200 miles on the last oil change there is now oil on the floor of my garage.. this is a death trap and it’s known. I have never had a vehicle only last 6 years.. please help! When my car stopped while driving there was a near miss of getting slammed from behind from another vehicle behind me.
This suv uses excessive oil. No oil leaks. Jerking motion and almost causing accidents due to this defect has this so unsafe. Drove to my mechanic. Tells me selonoids burned and need replaced. No oil on dip stick due to engine burning up so much oil and rings thin!! I drove for 300 miles with oil on the dipstick only to find out from the mechanic the rings are too thin on the pistons and no oil!!! Said I will never need to get an oil change because I willbe adding oil all the time..just change the filter! I’m paying $50 every 2 weeks for synthetic oil to add in this pos suv. I’ve contacted GM and no response. The mechanic said to fix the problem I need a new engine or keep adding oil!!! As an Consumer….this is NOT RIGHT!!! Can you help me??? I contacted your office when this started happening and didn’t hear back via phone or email….Or I missed your communication.
My 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has under 70k miles. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that the motor was no good. I had it for over 4 months and checked the VIN before I purchased the car. I was told that #3 cylinder misfired checked the compression on # 3 cyclinder and it only came to 50 lbs of pressure while the other cylinders showed 150 lbs of pressure. The oil reservoir was empty and I just filled it about 3 days ago. There was no sign of oil leakage.
Our 2016 Chevy Equinox LT with the 2.4l engine has a cracked exhaust manifold. This allows exhaust gasses to get into the passenger compartment. I found the problem due to the smell of exhaust gasses and a noisey exhaust.I removed the heat shield and found the crack in the cast iron exhaust manifold. This will only get worse and can cause the 02 sensor to make the check engine light on. I have read and found this is a very common problem with the GM 2.4L engine dating back to a least 2010. GM kept making this flaw with the know problem.
Some previous background on my 2016 Chevy Equinox that I bought brand new: - I brought in my car about 6 months ago to get it repaired for an engine seal issue. This set me back about $3,200. I thought the issue was fixed, but I think it's related to the current issue I'm now having. - I had a minor incident where the windshield wiper flew off in the middle of the street and have seen a few complaints about that, so thought it was noteworthy enough to mention. Now, the car has 100,000 miles on it and the engine light came on again. I brought it in a few days ago (10/18/22) and the mechanics said that I had a "bad" engine and that the car's issue was excessive oil consumption. They quoted the repair at $11,000 (which I have found quotes that are lower since, but not by much). The KBB value of the car is just under $10,000. Considering the repair earlier this year, the car has cost me more than it's worth by far. The car is only 5-6 years old and only has 100,000 miles on it! I'm seeing the same make/model have recalls and several issues with the engine seals and the excessive engine oil consumption. I know that my car falls under this as well, but has not received any warranty or any recalls yet. I can't afford a new car or a fix on the current car since the issue is massive and requires a new engine. If TONS of other people are having the same issue(s) (over 1000 complaints), then why are consumers not being reimbursed? It looks like there are only lawsuits for this out there that are being handled at the consumer-level (which I cannot afford an attorney for this either). Now, I'm having to put oil in my car constantly in order to drive it. I'm worried it's putting me in danger (and anyone else on the road). I've been reading that once it gets cold outside (which it is already getting down to 32F at night), it's likely that the seals are going to break again and cause the engine to fail.
Purchased vehicle certified pre owned May 2019 with 56,000 miles. In June 2019 replaced front tire that were new due to passenger tire wear also New battery and oil change..Jan 2020 had to have front main seal oil ring replaced. Oil changes done every 3 to 7 thousand miles. Have a 2 sets of tires put on .Have had some hesitation problems throughout while.driving. But never did find cause. Took to chevy dealer on Nov 3rd for windshield wiper motor replacement. Picked up on Nov. 5th. Have had issues with starting since picked up had to carry jump start box in car. Car was parked until I could get a new battery approx 1 week. Put new battery in drove to work for about 2 days still.had issues. Traction stability light had came on never went off. Parked car for another week or so Drove 2 miles down road to store. While driving car was loosing power. Screen went out and engine reduced power light came on and died. Waited about 15 min jump.started .got about 10 feet car went into.Limp mode got it home . Would not start ..got a list of codes. Replaced starter, camshaft and crankshaft sensor, new pcm, valve cover. Amd another battery. Car has not ran since. Motor is blown. Car has been down since Dec. 15th 2021. I have lost my job. Due to not being dependent on getting to work. Have looked into repair cost about 7 to 8 thousand that I cam not afford and still Makin car payments. This is a Manufacture defect and could have been alot worse if I was going any faster or been out in the dark stranded somewhere. Hard to believe a regular maintain vehicle would just die the way it did. Someone or something needs to be done ..Not fair to have to pay over $15000 and still making payments on a lawn ornament. When Chevrolet has none about this issue and refuses to fix. Knowing the engines will blow a rod do to the oil issue ..
oil was dripping for the past two months. I took it to the dealer and they said they could find nothing. It kept dripping and now the rear main seal must be replaced. auto has 13,005 miles on it
Excessive oil consumption causing malfunction
Timing chain has gone bad . Fuel pressure regulator went bad Down pipe to the catalytic converter has gone bad
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while having a routine oil change at the local dealer, the contact was informed that the high-pressure fuel pump was inoperable causing fuel to leak into the oil. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000. The VIN was not available.

Vehicle has a significant oil leak, as stated by other owners with the year and model vehicle. Could cause critical engine failure if unresolved. The leak is on the passenger side of the engine, causing the oil to drip on the belt and spray throughout the engine compartment. This causes drivers to have to spend more money on oil changes due to excessive oil loss. One of the pictures submitted below was of the ground with two half dollar size amounts of oil from 20 minutes of being parked.
The engine failed abruptly and without warning. It is at a mechanics now and is available to look at. When the engine suddenly lost power I was driving up to a red light. If this happened when I was on a highway it could’ve been catastrophic. An independent mechanic has told me they’ve replaced multiple engines because of the same issues. It hasn’t been inspected by anyone other than a mechanic. There was no warning lamps, messages prior to the engine failure.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving and accelerating the check engine warning light would illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer and the contact was informed that no fault codes were retrieved; however, the computer was reset. The contact stated that shortly after retrieving the vehicle the failure recurred and was taken back to the dealer. The contact was informed that the failure was due to the sensors in the main computer. The vehicle was repaired out of pocket. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.

My vehicle is burning too much oil. I have to put a quart of oil in less than every thousand miles. This is a problem for me and my family, when it comes to safety. I took it to the dealer they say that's normal.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, there was a knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed there was a gasket leak in the engine and the vehicle was leaking engine oil. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

Car kept stalling out on my daughter then just quit running. We had it towed to an engine shop and they said the timing belt came apart and now it needs a new motor. She has not even had the car a year and has routinely maintenanced it. We still owe over $10k on the car and a new motor is over $10k. This should be a recall from the manufacture. Stalling on her could have caused her to be in a wreck!!!
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 50 - 55 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with continuously variable transmission (CVT) failure, which caused the oil to leak out of the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they would assist with the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Entered vehicle and smelled exhaust inside. Checked tail pipe and it was clear and blowing out exhaust. Pulled out of driveway and got sudden smell of oil. About 200 feet down the street smelled burning oil. Turned around and went home, car was dying and would not start after. Had to be towed to be checked and was told engine was flooded along with other issues from driving that short distance the way it was. NOT ONE ALERT SHOWED OR IS NOW SHOWING ON DASH OR DISPLAY. Nothing about oil, no check engine, no warnings of any issues. Has been maintained and just had an oil change. Is driven daily and had no alerts or issues. Now we are stuck paying over $6k to replace the entire block when there was no notification that any maintenance was needed. Any notification that pops up, we check and fix immediately. In the shop still and techs say no lights or warnings are coming on still when they turn the car on. Not even check engine when it’s blown! We bought a newer vehicle to avoid these issues and now we are stuck dropping that much or more to replace engine block or buy a new suv all together. Seeing as the economy is horrible right now, we really can’t afford to do either!!
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated and the contact continued driving to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed and the contact was informed that there was no oil in the engine and that the PCV valve was damaged and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,500. THE CONSUMER STATED THE PCV FAILS WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE REACHES 0 DEGREES. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED A PERCENTAGE OF THE REPAIR COST.

Problems with oil leaking on rear seal. No notice given until light came on that said stop engine now. Upon inspection all oil was gone. My mechanic said this is an unfortunate issue with this engine because the pressure release hole is so small that any dirt can block it and but a lot of pressure on the back seal until it bursts and leaks out oil. This could have blown my engine and it only has 67000 miles. Definitely a manufacturers defect.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 32 MPH, the contact was veering off the highway exit ramp and noticed in the rear-view mirror that there was black smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact got off the exit ramp and became aware that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact activated the hazard light and drove to the residence. Upon inspection, the contact became aware that the engine oil was extremely low. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the rear main seal had blown out and that the engine needed to be repaired or replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving 45 MPH, the vehicle started making abnormal sounds and then stalled. The warning message “Low Engine Pressure” was displayed. The contact’s daughter was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact’s residence. The contact’s husband, a Ford mechanic diagnosed that the PCM valve had frozen, built-up pressure in the engine, and blew out the pressure which ruptured the rear main seal. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact’s husband that it was a known failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.

Drove to work 1/26/22 and heard my engine knocking. During my 10 minute commute there were no warnings, messages or any active dashboard light(s), especially none regarding the engine or oil pressure . Once I parked, my engine seized and began leaking/smoking. The engine needs replaced due to excessive oil consumption and a faulty oil pressure warning.
Our car was parked outside for the weekend and we were planning to return home. It was around 14°F outside and starting to snow. Approximately 10 minutes into the trip home, the 2016 Chevy Equinox started to make some faint abnormal sounds. Shortly after the instrument cluster displayed a Stabilitrak Warning. I presumed an issue with the traction control and continued to drive. Shortly after the Equinox went into a failsafe/power limiting mode. We (my wife and young daughters were with me) were within a few miles of a gas station so we decided to try to drive there to not be in the cold weather. Before reaching a gas station, the car stalled and needed to be towed to a service shop. The car was diagnosed with a blown rear main seal causing catastrophic engine failure. It was determined the PCV valve froze causing excess crankcase pressure, blowing the rear main seal. The Equinox had 89,277 miles on it at the time. "Tow" costs: $149.18 Engine Replacement Cost: $6504.30 At no point did any oil related (level, pressure) indicator appear.
The air bag light keeps coming on intermittently as I’m driving saying service airbag but when you check the code nothing specific comes up. I’ve had mechanics look at the car and for them to guess it will cost me Thousands. And I noticed my truck is also hesitating to drive and almost feels like it’s going to shut down as I’m driving with a constant check engine light the light came on about a day after the service air bag light
2016 Chevy equinox Engine has to be rebuilt due to a faulty 2.4 GM motor with excessive oil consumption which led to timing chain breaking which caused other internal damage to engine! Known issue for this vehicle
I went to pick up my child from school and when we were leaving my check engine light came on and my car stalled out. I got it started and drove about 20 feet and it stalled again. Got it started again and drove another 20 feet, stalled again. I made it to the stoplight at the school and it stalled again. I had to stop for gas and as I was leaving from the gas pump it stalled in front of an oncoming car. I made it to the stop light and it stalled at the light. I managed to make it home. I just had an oil change on 07/23/2021. I'm regular with maintenance and at the dealership but the reason I file a complaint is because I'm finding out this is an issue Chevrolet has known about for awhile. And people are talking about how its an expensive fix that is short term before returning. Plus, it can't its not safe stalling on the road. I have around 66000 miles on it. I mainly drive locally. I hasn't been inspect yet. I called and I'm waiting to hear from the dealership as I type. I had to wait almost 2 weeks to get in for the oil change. The only thing I've notice was the check engine light before it stalls. I have had issue with air conditioning going in and out and it does accelerate that well but neither does my 2008 Equinox. You can reach me at (cell) [XXX] or (home) [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
I filed an complaint about my Equinox stalling when it stops. I had the oil changed on 07/16/2021 not 07/23/2021(I went in on a separate matter on that date.) But I'm still worried about the car stalling so many times. Because it can be a danger with stalling out on the road and at stoplights.
My 2016 Chevrolet Equinox caught on fire about 10 minutes after my accident. I rear ended a pickup truck going about 5-10 miles an hour. Although nobody was hurt, I don't think SUVs should catch on fire. I'm unaware if this problem is frequent in 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, but there wasn't any warning of the sudden fire that appeared from the engine, i.e. sirens, sounds from within the car. I'm unaware if Chevrolet, law enforcement or the insurance company has inspected the vehicle after the accident?
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and then stalled. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed nor repaired and remained at the independent mechanic. The contact stated that the vehicle had the timing chain replaced at 50,000 miles and was relating the failure to a faulty timing chain. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no warranty coverage on the vehicle. Additionally, the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 99,000. The VIN was unavailable.

My Equinox was knocking. It had very little oil in the engine and no oil light ever came on. And in between oil changes it uses more than usual oil.
IN EARLY NOVEMBER OF 2020 MY CHEVROLET EQUINOX ENGINE FAILED DUE TO EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND BURNING OIL. MY LOW OIL LIGHT NEVER WENT ON AND WE DID REGULAR OIL CHANGES WHICH STILL DIDNT MATTER. WE WERE PUTTING OIL IN IT EVERY FEW DAYS UNTIL FINALLY IT WOULDNT START ANYMORE. I HAD IT THEN TOWED TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED AS IT IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BUT REFUSE TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION RESULTING IN A BILL OF OVER $2,200. THEY NEVER FIXED THE LOW OIL LIGHT, AND WE HAVE FOUND THAT NOW EVEN THOUGH IT HAD BEEN FIXED IT IS STILL USING OIL EXCESSIVELY SO I AM CONSTANTLY CHECKING IT. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET TO DISPUTE THE MATTER BUT THEY REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I TOLD THEM THAT I BELIEVE IT TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AS I HAVE RESEARCHED THAT MANY CHEVY EQUINOXES HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES RESULTING IN ENGINE DAMAGE, YET THEY STILL HAVE REFUSED TO LOOK INTO IT AND SAID TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH YOU HENCE THIS EMAIL. I AM SEEKING A RECALL ON THE 2016 EQUINOX REGARDING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND DEFECTIVE LOW OIL LIGHT. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE TO DIE ON A HIGHWAY AND POSSIBLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WOULD APPRECIATE THIS BEING LOOKED INTO AND BE KEPT INFORMED ON ITS STATUS. THANK YOU

EVERYTHING TURNS OFF, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS AND ALL POWER SHUTS OFF. YOU HAVE TO STOP AND THROW IT IN PARK AND RESTART IT. IT USUALLY DOES RESTART RIGHT AWAY BUT THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. MOST OF THE TIME IT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRY TO MOVE FROM A COMPLETE STOP OR SLOW DOWN, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES WHILE IN DRIVE. VEHICLE STALLS WHEN IN MOTION AND WHEN STOPPED. VEHICLE STALLED ON RESIDENTIAL ROADS. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE PISTON RINGS OR CRANK SENSOR. *TR

I IMMEDIATELY TOO THE VEHICLE TO MONRO MUFFLER AND BRAKE FOR SERVICE. WHEN I ARRIVED, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD NO OIL. I PERFORMED REGULAR OIL CHANGES ON THIS VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO INDICATION ABOUT LOW OIL PRESSURE, THE VEHICLE DID NOT OVERHEAT. THE ENGINE NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

THE TIMING BELT ON MY ENGINE WENT OUT RESULTING IN MY VEHICLE DYING WHENEVER MY CAR IDLED LOW. IF I DIDN?T CONSTANTLY GIVE IT SOME GAS, THE CAR WOULD SHUT OFF. THIS WOULD HAPPEN AT RED LIGHTS AND STOP SIGN WHERE I COULDN?T GIVE THE CAR GAS, SO I?D END UP STOPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION WITH INCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAD TO GET MY CAR REPAIRED AND TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS (ONE AT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP) SAID THAT TIMING BELTS ARE AN ISSUE WITH CHEVY EQUINOX. THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST REPAIR I NEEDED DONE ON MY CAR AND AT ONLY 77,000 MILES. THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID I?D MOST LIKELY ONLY GET ANOTHER 50,000 MILES OUT OF THE ENGINE. THAT WOULD BE SHORT OF 130,000 MILES. I THINK IF TIMING BELTS ARE SUCH AND ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE THEN THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THEM.

AFTER ARRIVING HOME, THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND BECAME AWARE OF AN OIL LEAK UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A CLOGGED PCV VALVE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000.

INITIALLY THE REAR MAIN SEAL WAS LEAKING OR BROKEN; ALL THE OIL DRAINED FROM THE VEHICLE. AFTER SPENDING $992.60 I WAS ADVISED THAT THE TIMING CHANGE AND GUIDES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I'VE HAD THE VVT CELANIDE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE CRANK AND CAM SHAFT SENSORS; THE VVT GEARS AND AN OIL PUMP REBUILD...$2017.60 LATER, MY TRUCK DROVE FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES WHERE IT DIED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN MY CAR (ASIDE FROM THE 3 MILES) IN NEARLY 2 MONTHS. NOW I'M BEING TOLD THEY THINK IT MAY BE ELECTRICAL. MY TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE HEARD FROM NUMEROUS GOGGLE SEARCHES THAT GM IS AWARE OF THE ISSUES WITH THIS MOTOR/VEHICLE AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER OF 4; I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK BRAND NEW TO SAFELY TRANSPORT MY CHILDREN HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE. THIS CAR JUST CUT OFF IN THE DEAD OF WINTER COMING OFF THE HIGHWAY...IT LITERALLY STOPPED IN MID ACCELERATION. HOW LONG BEFORE SOME ONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED?

ON DECEMBER 10TH, 2019, AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON INTERSTATE 694 IN ARDEN HILLS MN, THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE, AND THEN EVENTUALLY STALLED. NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING A PROBLEM EVER CAME ON. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST CHEVROLET DEALERSSHIP, AND 2 DAYS LATER WAS INFORMED BY THEM THAT THE ENGINE HAD RUN OUT OF OIL, AND I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE THAT WOULD COST ME $8500. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I DISCOVERED THAT EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS MOTOR, THE 2.4L ECOTEC. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ON THE INTERNET. A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST GM RESULTED IN A $42 MILLION JUDGEMENT AGAINST GM, BUT IT ONLY COVERED MODEL YEARS 2010-2013. A 2ND CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST GM TO COVER MODEL YEARS 2014-2017, THIS LAWSUIT IS STILL WORKING IT'S WAY THROUGH THE COURTS. GM HAS REFUSED TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPENSE, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE. INFORMATION ON THESE LAWSUITS CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.CLASSACTION.ORG, AND WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM. I AM ASKING THAT GM REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPENSE, NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS.

I RESTARTED ENGINE, THE WARNING STAYED ON. DROVE ABOUT 3 MILES TO DEALERSHIP,WAS TOLD TO DRIVE IT AS APPT NOT AVAILBLE TILL TUES. ENGINE SLOWED DOWN COULD ONLY GET TO 35MPH. AFTER ANOTHER 5MILES IT STARTED WORKING SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET HOME. I HAVE DONE ALL REQUIRED MATENIACE HAVE 69,000 MILES ON IT, NOW. IF THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WHEN I REACH THIS MILAGE, WHAT IS MY RECOURSE?

I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND IT'S BEEN CAUSING ISSUES FROM DAY ONE. AT FIRST, IT WAS THE BLUETOOTH, THEN IT WAS MY WINDSHIELD WIPER, THEN MY CAMSHAFT, AND NOW MY CA FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS GOING OUT. I HAVE DONE ALL THE REPAIRS WITH THE DEALERSHIP, HOWEVER MY LAST SERVICE MADE ME NOT TRUST THEM NO MORE. THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE REPLACED THE CAMSHAFT, BUT MY CAR STILL DRIVES THE SAME WAY AND EVEN WORSE NOW.

PASSENGER AIR BAG ALARM GOES OFF WHEN SEAT IS EMPTY AND OCCASIONALLY THE PASSENGER AIR BAG TURNS OFF WHILE AN ADULT PASSENGER IS IN THE SEAT DUE TO A FAULTY CONNECTOR. THIS HAPPENS SPORADICALLY DURING ALL TYPES OF DRIVING, IDLING OR WHILE PARKED. THE CONCERN THAT DURING AN IMPACT THE FAULTY CONNECTOR WILL CAUSE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG TO NOT DEPLOY WHILE A PASSENGER IS IN THE SEAT IS HIGHLY WORRY SOME AND EVEN THOUGH CHEVY IS AWARE OF THE CONDITION, THEY WON'T RECALL OR FIX THE ISSUE. TIMING CHAIN FAILURE CAN CAUSE SUDDEN UNEXPECTED ENGINE SHUTOFF WHILE DRIVING CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SUDDEN STALLING DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION LEADING TO POSSIBLE COLLISIONS AS THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF WITH NO WARNING. CHEVY IS AWARE OF THE TIMING CHAIN ISSUES IN THEIR 2.4L ENGINES AND YET HASN'T ISSUED A RECALL EVEN THOUGH CATROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE AND PROBABLY LOSS OF LIFE DUE TO LOSS OF CONTROL COLLISIONS. ENGINE SHUTOFF DUE TO CHAIN STRETCH OR FAILURE CAN OCCUR AS ANY TIME DURING DRIVING OR ENGINE RUNNING CONDITIONS.

ENGINE BURNS OIL... SUV ACTUALLY SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP, IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE NO OIL. LUCKILY IT SHUT OFF WHEN I WAS BY MYSELF WITHOUT MY FAMILY WHILE AT A RED LIGHT AND NOT WHEN I WAS DRIVING. THIS IS A KNOWN GM ISSUE WITH OLDER EQUINOX'S AND NOTHING HAS BEEN CORRECTED. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED BC OF THIS ISSUE! IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED THAT A LOT OF OTHER EQUINOX OWNERS ARE DEALING WITH THE SAME ISSUE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECTED! GM HAS FAILED THEIR CUSTOMERS AND IS ACTING NEGLIGENT!

DRIVING ON THE NJ TURNPIKE JANUARY 22 2019 FREEZING COLD OUT DAY 15' AND MY CAR JUST DIES. I CAME TO A ROLLING STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. TRIED STARTING CAR AND NOTHING, THEN I HEAR A GRINDING NOISE AS I TURN THE KEY, GET OUT AND OPEN THE HOOD. I TURN KEY AGAIN AND I HEAR THIS GRINDING NOISE AGAIN. NO WARNING LIGHTS NO INDICATORS NOTHING. CALL AAA BUT THEY CAN'T PICK ME UP ON THE TURNPIKE NEEDS TO BE A SEPARATE TOW TRUCK COMPANY. AFTER 45 MINUTES FREEZING IN THE CAR THE TOW TRUCK GUY SHOWS UP. TAKES A LOOK AT THE TRUCK CHECK OIL AND SAYS I HAVE NO OIL. TURNED KEY AND DASH DID NOT SHOW ANY OIL LIGHTS LIT. LOOKED AT THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AND THERE WAS OIL ALL OVER IT SEE PICS. HAD TO GET TOWED TO YARD THEN CALLED AAA TO TAKE ME TO ELKINS CHEVY. ELKIN'S CHEVY LOOKED AT IT AND SAID THE PCV VALVE FROZE CAUSING THE REAR MAIN SEAL TO BREAK CAUSING ENGINE TO LOSE ALL OIL AND CEASE UP WITH POSSIBLE PIECES IN THE TRANSMISSION. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR SENSORS LIT UP AT ALL STILL. DEALER SAID I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY 88,575 MILES SO I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING. NEW ENGINE $6,000 USED $4,500 PLUS WHAT EVER OTHER DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION, PVC AND CASE. ESTIMATED 7,000 TO 9000. TO FIX THE TRUCK WAS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD AND ALWAYS GOT SERVICED OIL CHANGES ECT. I BOUGHT ANOTHER EQUINOX 2019 AND WHILE TRANSFERRING MY STUFF FROM 1 TRUCK TO ANOTHER SERVICE GUY SAID THIS A COMMON THING WITH THIS ECOTEC ENGINE AND CHEVY IS AWARE. I WENT HOME AND GOOGLE WHAT HAPPENED AND SURE ENOUGH THEY HAVE A CLASS ACTION SUITE AGAINST THEM. THEY SAID IT SHOULD ONLY BE ON THE OLDER MODELS AND IT IS FIXED ON NEWER YEARS. I COULD ENTER MY VIN TO SEE IF MY TRUCK WAS PART OF THE RECALL WHICH IT WAS NOT. I CALLED CHEVY, ESCALLATION AND MANAGERS THEY SAID SINCE I SOLD\TRADED THE TRUCK IN FOR A NEW ONE THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT 65 MILES PER HOUR MY ENGINE STARTED TO FLUTTER WHEN NOTICING THAT I PULLED OVER RIGHT AWAY AND MY ENGINE SHUT OFF. I HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THE DEALERSHIP TOOK A LOOK AT IT THEY REALIZED IT WAS A PCV CLOG FROM CONDENSATION GETTING IN TO THE PCV VALVE. I HAVE 72000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE SO THERE IS NO MORE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY I BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HOWEVER THEY WILL NOT COVER IT BECAUSE THEY DO NOT COVER CLOGS. UPON RESEARCHING THIS I FOUND OUT THAT CHEVY HAD A LOT OF THESE AND ACTUALLY EXTENDED WARRANTIES ON VEHICLES FROM 2010 TO 2014 FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THEY HAVE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT FIXING THE ISSUE IN THE ARTICLES I HAVE READ. UPON HEARING THIS INFORMATION FROM THE DEALERSHIP I CONTACTED ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHICH THAT THEY HAD 6 VEHICLES IN THEIR FOR THIS SAME EXACT THING THEY TOLD ME THAT IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT GETS COLD. CHEVROLET WILL NOT COVER THIS KNOWING IT IS A PROBLEM. ATTACHED IS THE SERVICE BULLETIN WHERE IT LIST THE MODELS AND WHERE CHEVY HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THOSE MAKE AND MODELS.

AFTERWARDS, THE POWER STEERING SEIZED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART WHEN PROMPTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOM BELL CHEVROLET (800 ALABAMA STREET, REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA 92374, (909) 283-0690) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED "LOW VOLTAGE". THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED IN 2016. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES WERE ERASED; THEREFORE, THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE "LOW VOLTAGE" FAILURE READING. ADDITIONALLY, AN ALARM SOUNDED, THE SEAT BELT WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED, AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGE READINGS WERE INCONCLUSIVE. THE CAR CONSUMES MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL, LIKE THE PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS. NO WARNING IS GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE RUNS OUT OF OIL CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE PISTONS, TIMING CHAINS AND ENGINE. GM DROPPED THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY TO 60 K KNOWING THAT THESE VEHICLES HAVE HAD THIS ISSUES SINCE 2011- TO CURRENT. THE FAILURE HAPPENS AT 58-60 K MILES MAKING IT THE CUSTOMER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR THIS ENORMOUS REPAIR. IN TALKING TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE YET NO ONE HAS INFORMED THE OWNERS THAT OIL CONSUMPTION ON A BRAND NEW CAR WOULD NEED TO BE MONITORED OR THAT NO ENGINE LIGHT WOULD BE TRIGGERED. LEAVING THE CUSTOMER WITH A CAR WITH LESS OF A POWER-TRAIN WARRANTY AND THE FULL COST OF THE REPAIR. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THAT THEY COULD DO A COST ASSISTANCE BUT WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR, BECAUSE MY MILEAGE IS JUST OUTSIDE THE 60K MARK. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. MY COWORKER HAS THE SAME VEHICLE AND BECAUSE HIS CAR FAILED AT 58 K IT WAS PAID FOR. GM KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN LOWERING THE POWER-TRAIN WARRANTY ON THIS CAR. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER AND GM NEEDS TO REPAIR THESE VEHICLES THEY KNOW ARE DEFECTIVE.

NOT TO MENTION ALL THE RESPIRATORY RELATED PROBLEMS IN THE LAST YEAR THE ENTIRE FAMILY HAS BEEN HAVING. CHEVY WOULD NOT LOOK AT MY CAR, I CALLED MULTIPLKE TIMES TELLING THEM MY CAR IS SO FOUL SMELLING I CANT DRIVE IT ANYMORE AND ITS NOT A DEAD ANMIAL BECAUSE WE SEARCHED EVERY COMPARTMENT THERE IS....AND THEY SAID ITS A DEAD MOUSE OR ANIMAL AND THAT WARRANTY DOESNT COVER THAT SO ITS NOT THERE PROBLEM..AFTER OVER A WEEK OF ME CALLING AND HAVING MY HUSBAND (A CERTIFIED MECHANIC) CALLING THEM NON STOP, THEY AGREED TO LOOK AT IT..ITS NOT AN ANIMAL IT IS JUST ALOT OF MOLD THAT IS GROWING ALL OVER THE CARS HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER SYSTEM! AND ALL THIS TIME ITS JUST BEEN FLOWING MOLD BACTERIA INTO MY VENTS! ITS SUMMER I USE A/C EVERYDAY IF I AM DRIVING.... WE'VE JUST BEEN BREATHING IT IN FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG...I BOUGHT THIS CAR 9 MONTHS AGO BRAND NEW AND NOW AFTER ONLY 16,000 MILES ITS A BREEDING GROUND FOR MOLD INSIDE MY HVAC UNIT? I WONT BE ABLE TO GET RID OF THAT SMELL, AND WHAT ABOUT MY SEATS OR CLOTHING OR DAMAGE THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE FROM THIS MOLD AND BACTERIA? THEY SAID GM WILL GIVE ME A RENTAL FOR 5 DAYS.....BUT PARTS WILL TAKE UP TO 4 TO EVEN COME IN BEFORE THEY WILL EVEN START FIXING THE "ISSUE". MY DAUGHTER IS 2 YEARS OLD AND HAD PNEMONIA 2 TIMES ALREADY.
