The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet HHR. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the vehicle. In addition, the contact stated that the passenger’s side air bag warning light illuminated and occasionally flashed on and off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the cost. The contact had previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V047000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) and the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 199,000.

When driving my 2009 HHR the steering wheel shakes & vibrate at different intervals. Usually while slowing down to a stop & sometimes after during high speeds. Recently the noise it made was frightening. I had to use my emergency flashers & drive 50 mi per hr. on the freeway to arrive home safely. I took my car to Mark Chevrolet & reported it on 08/02/2021. The car's mileage was 133344. The car is not an everyday vehicle that is driven often. I received the car on 08/17/2021 after the steering column & shaft were replaced along with resurfacing front brake rotors & rear brake job. On August 18, 2021 while driving on the freeway I went to blow my horn at a hazardous situation & discovered none of the steering wheels controls were working, horn & etc. I immediately returned my car to Mark Chevrolet & reported their negligence & how they had risk my life to release the car without these functions working. They supposedly corrected the problem. On 07/05/2022 I had to return my car to Mark Chevrolet because I was experiencing the identical problem with my steering wheel vibrating & make noise. My cars mileage was only 137641 less than a year later with just 4,297 miles driven. They claimed to have tightened something up in the column & returned my car on 07/12/2022. As I was driving on 07/16/2022 again the steering wheel started vibrating & making strange loud noises. I felt so unsafe & tried to make it home safely driving at a reduced speed. I plan to return the car this week back to Mark Chevrolet and am asking for support to rectify this situation. I understand there was a recall on Chevrolet HHR 2009 Steering Electric Power Assist System. I don't know if this issue is related to that. I never received communication from General Motors stating that my vehicle was affected but apparently there is a problem. Please Help!

I was driving about 30 miles an hour in town when the check engine light started to Flash then immediately following all the dashlight started to Flash and then not a second later the car shut off the steering will locked the brakes locked up And all the doors were locked So at 30 miles an hour the brakes locked up the steering wheel locked so I couldn't turn the wheel and the car shut off There were no injuries thank God
MY STEERING WHEEL BEGINS TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE, ONSET ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO DRIVING, SPEEDING UP OR BRAKING HAS NO EFFECT ON THE FREQUENCY OR LEVEL OF SHAKE. MY STEERING WHEEL WILL BE NORMAL, ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE, GOING THE SAME SPEED WILL BEGIN TO SHAKE. I CAN STOP AND PARK THE CAR, RESTART IT, WILL NOT SHAKE UNTIL I AM DRIVING AGAIN ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE. WHILE SHAKING, IT BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL EVEN TO GET INTO THE NEXT LANE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE CITY DRIVING, I AM TOO AFRAID TO TAKE IT ON THE HIGHWAY OR GO OVER 40 MPH AS I FEEL LIKE I HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES.

STARTED SMELLING SMOKE AND THE WHOLE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN WITH THE BEING STUCK ON IGNITION. COULDN'T OPEN THE DOORS AND SMOKE WAS BILLOWING OUT AND FIRE START COMING OUT OF LOWER MIDDLE CONSOLE. LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO OPEN DOOR AND EXIT VEHICLE. FIRE THEN ERUPTED AND QUICKLY TRAVELED STRAIGHT DOWN THE CENTER CONSOLE TO THE REAR OF THE CAR. WITHIN MINUTES THE CAR WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND WAS COMPLETELY BURNED TO NOTHING. SUFFERED SEVERAL BURNS AND SMOKE INHALATION AND THE CAR AND EVERY THING IN IT WAS DESTROYED

MY CAR'S POWER STEERING HAS DANGEROUSLY DISAPPEARED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE POWER STEERING CAME ON ON THE DASHBOARD AND I HAD TO STIR THE CAR WITH SO MUCH FORCE TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY. I HAD MY 10-YEAR-OLD SON WITH ME ON HIS WAY TO SCHOOL. MY 2009 HHR HAS WHAT IS REFERRED TO AS THE MAY 15, 2014 GM TAIL LIGHT MALFUNCTION. THE MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED FROM FAULTY WIRING AND CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATE WITHOUT TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THEY REMAIN ON WHILE DRIVING. THIS MALFUNCTION ALSO DISABLES SAFETY FEATURES LIKE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ' WHICH TRIES TO CORRECT FOR SKIDS ' AND PANIC BRAKING ASSIST, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE'S FULL BRAKING POWER IS BEING USED IN AN EMERGENCY. IT ALSO DISABLES THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE TRACTION CONTROL. IN 2014 G.M. SAID IT KNEW OF HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS AND 13 ACCIDENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS AND SEVERAL ISSUES OF ROAD RAGE FROM OTHER DRIVERS SINCE MY HHR BEGAN THE MALFUNCTIONING IN FEBRUARY 2014 WHICH IS WHEN I FIRST CONTACTED GM TO GET IT FIXED. SINCE THEN I HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS WITH THE NHTSA, THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, THE STATE OF WISCONSIN CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY AND GM BUT HAVE NOT YET HAD ANYONE STEP UP AND FIX THE PROBLEM. SINCE THE MALFUNCTION CAUSES THE BCM TO LOSE MEMORY WITH THE BRAKE POSITIONING SENSOR I DID TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED GM DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM RE-LEARN THE MEMORY BETWEEN THE TWO. THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY AND LASTED ABOUT TWO MONTHS. I CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE THIS DONE EVERY TWO MONTH AS A SOLUTION. GM NEEDS TO BE ORDERED TO FIX THE ISSUES CORRECTLY BEFORE SOMEONE IS FATALLY INJURED.
CAR WOULD NOT CRANK, REPLACED BATTERY,HAD ALTERNATOR AND STARTER TESTED ALL GOOD. HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO VEHICLE REPAIR SHOP. NOW THE PART THAT IS NEEDED IS NOT AVAILABLE NEW SO NOW MY MECHANIC HAS WENT THROUGH THREE PARTS THAT HAVE NOT WORKED. IT HAS TO DO WITH THE FUSE BOX. WHY HASN'T THIS VEHICLE NOT BEEN RECALLED IF CHEVROLET NO LONGER MAKES THIS PART? I SEE A LOT OF HHRS ON THE ROAD AND SOONER OR LATER THESE CARS WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS SAME VEHICLE HAD STALLED ON ME BEFORE AND THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM .I STILL OWE FOR A VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE FIXED. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP GET THIS CAR RECALLED.

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR THERE ARE POWER/ELECTRICAL SURGES. I HAVE DOCUMENT THIS SEVERAL TIMES. THE LEFT REAR TAIL LIGHTS REPEATEDLY BURNS OUT, IT DOESN'T JUST BLOW, IT CRACKS AND MELTS. TO THE POINT IT LITERALLY MELTS THE HOLDER OF THE BULB. THE SURGES ARE MORE FREQUENT. I HAVE TO CHANGE BURNT/ LITERALLY EXPLODED BULBS EVER 3-4 DAYS. AND I HAVE CALLED THE CHEVY DEALER AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THIS IS ELECTRICAL. THE POWER SURGES CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME WITH OUT NOTICE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR A CHEVY HHR BUT THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT LISTED IN THIS BATCH OF RECALLS FOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. I ALSO CALLED THE CHEVY HEADQUARTERS AND THEY INFORMED ME ITS MY ISSUE, THERE IS NO RECALL FOR MY CAR FOR THIS AND ITS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRENTY. SO I ASKED IM JUST TO KEEP DRIVING A CAR THAT HAS ELECTRICAL SURGES, WHAT IF IT SURGES TO THE GAS TANK OR SOMETHING. SHE SAID ITS NOT COVERED. SO, I WANT IT FORMALLY DOCUMENTED THAT A REPORT WAS ISSUED; SINCE IT IS HAPPENING ALL THE TIME. I HAVE GOTTEN PULLED OVER TWICE IN 2 MONTHS FOR THIS LIGHT. AND THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT. . THESE SURGES HAVE BEEN HAPPENING OVER THE PAST YEAR, I WAS TOLD THAT MAY BE THE REASON THAT MY PASSENGER SEAT BELT LOCKED UP ( CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO CUT MY DAUGHTER OUT OF IT) AND THE REASON THE WINDOWS WILL SOMETIME STOP OPERATING. BUT WILL EVENTUALLY START BACK.

STEERING WHEEL ALMOST ALWAYS SHAKES WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED AND SOMETIMES SEEMS LIKE IT IS DRIVING UNDER ITS OWN CONTROL. I HAVE LOVED THE CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT WITH LESS THAN 9,000 MILES ON IT IN DECEMBER 2010, BUT I DRIVE MY HANDICAPPED HUSBAND AND ELDERLY MOTHER TO MANY DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS AND CANNOT HANDLE THE ANXIETY OF BEING AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. THERE IS ALREADY THE FEELING OF HELPLESSNESS IN CAR ACCIDENTS WITHOUT ONE DRIVING A CAR THAT CAN'T BE CONTROLLED AT ALL TIMES. AND THESE THINGS HAPPEN OUT OF THE BLUE WITHOUT WARNING. I, AT ALL TIMES, MUST KEEP MY MIND ON THE FACT THAT MY BRAKES, STEERING, TRANSMISSION AND/OR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MAY FAIL AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. THIS DOES NOT MAKE FOR A CALM DRIVING EXPERIENCE. NERVOUSNESS AND HIGH ANXIETY IS NOT A CONDITION THAT ANYONE SHOULD BE IN WHEN HANDLING A POTENTIALLY DEADLY WEAPON IN AND AROUND OTHER PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND VEHICLES. CANADA HAS FORCED GM TO DO A RECALL ON THE HHR FOR THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE BUT TO DATE IT HAS NOT BEEN DONE IN THE US. THE DEFECTIVE STEERING MOTOR PART NUMBER RECALLED ON THE COBALT WAS THE SAME EXACT PART NUMBER AS THE HHR, SO WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED ON THE HHR? IF YOU'LL READ SOME OF THE HHR FORUMS YOU'LL LEARN THAT MINE WAS NOT AS ISOLATED OCCURRENCE, IT IS VERY COMMON AND SEEMS TO START HAPPENING WHEN THE CARS GET AROUND 50,000 MILES. HAD THIS HAPPENED TO AN ELDER PERSON AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CHANCES ARE THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE, THIS DISABLES THE STEERING! IT STALLED IMMEDITATLY.WITH THE KEYS STUCK IN THE START POSITION I TRIED IT AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 10 MIN AND IT STARTED UP AND I DROVE HOME. WE FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO PULL THE FUSE TO SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP WAS CLOSING AROUND THE TIME I STARTED CALLING AND THEIR OPTION TO COME LEAVE THE CAR WITHOUT OTHER TRANSPORTATION WAS NOT A GOOD OPTION FOR ME WITH KIDS. ONCE FUSE WAS OUT THE CAR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH THE KEY IN IT WHICH IS CAUSING A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL OF STRESS FOR ME. I HAVE TO PUT FUSE BACK IN THIS MORNING AND TAKE TO DEALERSHIP TO GET MY CAR FIXED. FROM OTHER COMPLAINTS THE FIX SHOULD BE THE SAME. AFTER PARKING IN THE DRIVE WAY AROUND 11:30 PM THE IGNITION KEY WOULD NOT TURN OFF. I TRIED TO USE THE RELEASE PLUNGER BUT ENDED UP REMOVING THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER AND FORCING IT OVER THE KEY. THEN I PULLED THE WIRE HARNESS OFF WHICH SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR BY PUTTING THE WIRE BACK ON AND TWISTING THE KEY. THE DEALER SAID THE KEY WAS BENT AND CHARGED ME $400 TO REPLACE THE SWITCH. THEY OBVIOUSLY USED PLIERS TO REMOVE THE KEY. WHILE IN THEIR WAITING ROOM I READ AN ARTICLE IN A MARCH ISSUE OF MOTOR MAGAZINE THAT SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL CARS INCLUDING HHR'S AND THEY ARE NOT SURE WHY. I PULLED INTO THE GAS STATION TO GET GAS. I COULD NOT SHUT THE CAR OFF NOR REMOVE THE KEY. MY 2009 COBALT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND WAS FIXED DUE TO A VEHICLE RECALL. HOWEVER, MY 2009 HHR HAD NO RECALL ON IT EVEN THOUGH IT USES THE EXACT SAME DEFECTIVE PARTS AS THE COBALT DID. I AM ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE STEERING ON THE HHR SINCE IT SHARES THE EXACT SAME MECHANICALS AS THE COBALT. THE COBALT HAD A RECALL DUE TO STEERING, HOWEVER THE HHR DID NOT. A SEARCH FOR COMPLAINTS ON=LINE YIELDED MANY RESULTS. IT APPEARS THAT THE HHR'S ARE HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS YET THE CONSUMERS ARE LEFT WITH PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS. HE WAS UNABLE TO GET THE IGNITION TO CUT OFF OR TO GET THE KEY TO MOVE AT ALL, SO HE TOOK THE HOUSING OFF AND FOUND A WIRING HARNESS THAT COULD BE UNPLUGGED TO CUT THE IGNITION OFF THEREFORE ENABLING THE CAR TO CUT OFF. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER IN ORDER TO BE RESTARTED. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT A SWITCH UNDERNEATH THE SEATS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER FOR THEM TO REDO THE INSTALLATION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 620. OIL LEAK ONTO THE COOLANT RESERVOIR. THE DEALER FOUND THE BRAKE FLUID CAP WAS NOT SEALED PROPERLY. THE HEATED SEATS THAT WERE I INSTALLED WERE CONNECTED TO THE BATTERY WHICH WAS CAUSING THE BATTERY TO DIE. UPDATED 03/19/09. *JB
