The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet HHR. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The power steering warning light was illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, the vehicle temporarily returned to normal functionality however, the failure reoccurred. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired due to the cost. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Although this vehicle is a 2010 HHR, it has less than 23000 miles on it, has been garaged kept and maintained impeccably. The warning light blinks at random and then the power steering fails. It does not matter the speed of the vehicle and happens at random. Once turned off and restarted, the power steering works for approx 5 minutes and then fails again. There was a recall on 2009-2010 HHRs for sudden loss of power steering issued in 3/2014, recall # 14V153000. This recall is not VIN# specific. However, when I contact the dealer for repair of this vehicle, I am told that the recall does not pertain to my VIN#, so its not covered. NHTSA has more than 135 complaints about HHRs since 10/2019 with more than half of them being steering issues. This clearly is a wider recall issue than originally thought. My vehicle is inoperable due to this safety issue. I filed a complaint with GM. They told me it was not their issue and I could pay to have it diagnosed and fixed at a dealership. This is a GM issue due to the amount of complaints about this exact problem from other owners. I am hoping GM is made aware of the widespread issues and does the right thing, issuing another recall for all 2009-2010 HHRs regardless of VIN#.

The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the power steering message was displayed on the instrument panel and while her daughter was driving the vehicle. The contact's daughter restarted the vehicle; however, the failure returned while driving at a low rate of speed. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering) which she linked to the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where she was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The manufacturer was also notified, and the contact was given a case number. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Power steering goes out while driving

Owner of 2010 Chevrolet HHR. While driving approximately 35 MPH and other various speeds, the vehicle intermittently lost power steering functionality. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was parked and turned off, then restarted. The warning light was no longer showing and power steering was restored. After driving for approximately 60 seconds there was again a loss of power steering functionality and the warring light illuminated. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included.

The power steering failed, it is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of my two very young children were put at risk. Suddenly as I crossed the rail road tracks and attempted to turn right onto another street, the power steering went out of my vehicle. I narrowly avoided a collision with another vehicle stopped at the stop sign on the street I signaled to turn down. It hasn't been inspected by anyone yet. The power steering light came on right as it failed and I had no assisted power steering, manual only.

My vehicle is the 2010 HHR with electric assist steering. As with thousands of other Chevrolet HHRs, my power steering abruptly stopped working. It is the EPS system that is notorious for stopping abruptly and was and is the subject of a recall. However, GM refuses to repair mine like they have over a hundred thousand others with the same exact issue. They state that my vehicle, though exactly the same as thousands and thousands of others subject to the recall, is not included in the recall. . . How can this be? Same exact issue. . .

I have replaced the lower control arms four times within the last 3 years that part is defective there are supposed to last 10 years. It affects your steering when breaking. This part needs to be recalled immediately. The last time I replaced the lower control arms was April 16th 2021.

The power steering warning light illuminated. The contact forcefully steered the steering wheel and pulled to the side of the curb in front of her friend's residence. The contact stated that as she turned off and restarted the vehicle, the steering wheel regained power steering; however, the failure reoccurred while driving and making turns. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that no issues were found; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the same independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering sensors had failed. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000. The power steering sensors and the battery were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that her VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.

My power steering is going out randomly making it unsafe to drive, I see there's a recall for 2010 chevy hhr power steering which is exactly what's happening with my vehicle. When I turn it off and turn it back on it will work for a minute then click and go back out, yet when my vin was ran the recall doesn't show up for my car even though the recall states 2010 chevy hhr.. mine clearly has the same issue as the other recall yet you guys haven't put it on my vin so it can be fixed properly.

While driving, my power steering fluid light indicator came on making it really hard to turn. After parking and turning the car on the steering wheel went back to normal. I had my mechanic to check my steering fluid and I did not need any added. This has happened 3 times while driving my car and I refuse to drive my car. Is there a recall on this the power steering?

RECENTLY, WITHOUT WARNING, I LOOSE THE POWER STEERING AND THE SIGN "POWER STEERING " COMES ON. IT BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE A TURN. WHEN I STOP THE CAR AND RESTART IT, THE STEERING IS BACK TO NORMAL BUT AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT GOES OUT AGAIN. THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST 1 OR 2 WEEKS. I CALLED THE DEALER YESTERDAY AND TOLD THEM ABOUT IT AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL, THEY SAID THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT AFFECTED BY IT. I KNOW FROM RESEARCH THAT QUITE A FEW CARS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT AFFECTED BY IT. CAN YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE IT? THANK YOU!

OUR CHEVY HHR 2010 HAS BEEN DYING AND STALLING OUT ON US WHILE WE ARE DRIVING IT, THE ONLY TIME IT HAD POWER GOING TO IT WAS WHEN IT WAS BEING JUMPED. EVEN THEN SOON AS THE CABLES WERE UNHOOKED IT WOULD JERK THEN DIE RIGHT AWAY. IT SEEMED AS IF MOST OF THE LIGHTS INSIDE AND OUTSIDED OF THE TRUCK ONLY WOULD FLASH WHILE JUMPING IT, THEN NOTHING. IT WAS ALSO VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, AND EVERYTHING BASICALLY SEEMS LIKE IT'S MALFUNCTIONING. VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY LOSES POWER STEERING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, FROM LOW TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. MAKING THE VEHICLE VERY HARD TO STEER ESPECIALLY IN TURNS AND CORNERS, AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL (14V15300) FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, BUT WHEN CALLING THE GM DEALERSHIP AND THE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLES VIN WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. HOW, IF I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, IS IT NOT CONSIDERED A 'SAFETY ISSUE' FOR ME? IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY MAJOR TRAGEDY LIKE COLLIDING WITH A GAS PUMP OR ANOTHER VEHICLE, I WAS ABLE TO RUN IT INTO THE CURB I FELT LIKE MY ARMS WERE NEARLY RIPPED FROM THE SOCKETS. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO MY HOME AND THE FOLLOWING DAY TOWED TO A MECHANIC. DISCOVERED THAT THE EXPERIENCE WAS NOT EXCLUSIVELY MINE, APPARENTLY SOME 444 OTHERS HAD AS WELL. I CHECKED FOR RECALL NOTICES WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALLS WERE CLOSED AND REPAIRS WERE DONE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW BY WHOM, WHEN AND WHERE EXACTLY! APPROXIMATELY TWO MINUTES AFTER LEAVING A CITY PARKING LOT DURING THE PROCESS OF MAKING A LEFT TURN ON A BUSY FOUR LANE ROAD A CHIME WAS HEARD AND THE DISPLAY READ POWER STEERING. AT THIS POINT THE POWER ASSIST WAS LOST AND THE CORNERING STEER EFFORT WAS VERY STRONG. I REDUCED SPEED CAUSING TRAFFIC DIFFICULTIES BUT WAS ABLE TO STEER BACK INTO THE LANE. DROVE SLOWLY DOWN STREET. PULLED OVER AND SHUT OF CAR. RESTARTED CAR AND POWER ASSIST RETURNED AND ALARM WAS CLEARED. CAR HAS 72,900 MILES ON IT. IT IS MY WIFE'S VEHICLE AND AS SHE WAS A PASSENGER DURING THIS INCIDENT SHE WILL NOT OPERATE IT NOW. HAVE DRIVEN IT FOR A WEEK WITH NO RE-OCCURRENCE. IF UNPREPARED THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.

1) THE TURN SIGNALS HAVE FAILED TO CANCEL AFTER A TURN ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. 2) RECENTLY, THE TURN SIGNAL WILL NOT HOLD IN THE ON POSITION ON A LEFT TURN AND HAS TO BE MANUALLY HELD DOWN TO ACTUATE THE SIGNAL FOR THE ENTIRE TURN. 3) AT THE SAME TIME, THE RIGHT SIGNAL WILL NO LONGER AUTOMATICALLY CANCEL AND HAS TO BE MANUALLY TURNED OFF AFTER A TURN. THESE ARE ISSUES BECAUSE YOU EITHER HAVE THE TURN SIGNAL NOT ON DURING A CROSS TRAFFIC TURN WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ENGAGED, OR YOU HAVE IT ON WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT HAD AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF.

FROM THAT POINT, I HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING INTERRUPTION. I BOUGHT POWER STEERING FLUID ONLY TO DISCOVER (AFTER CHECKING ONLINE FOR THE LOCATION OF MY POWER STEERING RESEVOIR) THAT I HAVE AN ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING SYSTEM. THIS DISCOVERY LED ME TO THE 4 RECALLS SINCE THE MANUFACTURE OF MY VEHICLE... IGNITION FAILS AND POWER STEERING FAILS. ALSO, THE STEERING DOES NOT RESPOND AS WELL AS IT DID BEFORE THE 1ST RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH. IT FEELS AS IF THE WHEELS ARE NOT RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY WHEN I AM DRIVING. WHILE EXITING ONTO THE FREEWAY AT 45 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WENT ON AND THE STEERING DIDN'T WORK. I REALIZED THE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE STEERING WHEEL AND CAR AND GOT OFF ON THE FIRST EXIT WHICH WAS 2 MILES AWAY. I TRIED NOT TO PANIC AS I HAD MY KIDS IN THE CAR. I THEN WENT TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION. TURNED OFF THE CAR TO CAL MY HUSBAND. AND WHEN I TESTED THE CAR TO TURN IT BACK ON THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WAS OFF AND THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NORMAL. I DECIDED I NEEDED TO TRY AND GET HOME, WE WERE 45 MINUTES AWAY FROM HOME. AS I DROVE THE CAR AGAIN AT A STEADY SPEED I STAYED ON THE SLOWEST LANE AND WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AGAIN THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AT 65 MPH. SINCE THEN IT STILL HAPPENS ONCE WE DRIVE IT. I HAVE A VIDEO OF WHEN IT GOES ON. I SAFELY RECORDED THE MALFUNCTION. THIS IS OUR ONLY TRANSPORTATION AND WE JUST BOUGHT IT FROM CARMAX IN MAY.

IN THE AFTERNOON ON THURSDAY 7/9/15, I HEARD A DING IN THE VEHICLE (WARNING SOUND) AND THE WORDS "POWER STEERING" APPEARED ON THE DASH PANEL UNDER THE SPEEDOMETER. ALL LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST WAS LOST AND MANUAL STEERING WAS THE ONLY WAY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF/ON, THE POWER STEERING WORKED AGAIN AND THEN AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE SAME ISSUE OCCURED. I PARKED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT DRIVE IT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. I SEARCHED FOR RECALLS AS WELL AS CONTACTED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE AND IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS. I WAS TOLD THERE IS A RECALL FOR POWER STEERING ON SOME 2010 CHEV HHR MODELS BUT MY VIN HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED. THE NEXT DAY I AVOIDED DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN POSSIBLE DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS AND THE INABILITY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. I DID DRIVE THE VEHICLE ONCE AND THE SAME THING DESCRIBED ABOVE HAPPENED THREE TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET BACK HOME. AT THIS POINT I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT ALL UNTIL THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN FIXED. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL CHEV DEALER AFTER A CANCELLATION OCCURRED AND THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS REPLACED ON 7/11/15. I HAVE CONTACTED GM ABOUT THIS AND HAVE BEEN ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER AN OFFICIAL RECALL, THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM HAPPENED IN THE SAME EXACT WAY DESCRIBED ON THE GM WEBSITE AND A RESULT OF THAT POWER STEERING RECALL IS TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. I HAVE REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS AT THIS TIME. ONE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED IT WAS HIGHLY UNLIKELY. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHY THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IDENTIFIED UNDER ANY RECALL AND WHEN A VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER RECALL BUT HAS AN ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED IF THEY'RE ANY STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THIS WAS A CLEAR HAZARD.

VEHICLE REVERTED TO MANUAL STEERING, BUT GREATER DRIVER EFFORT WAS REQUIRED AS I HAD TO TURN SO I WOULD NOT HIT OTHER VEHICLES. SAME ISSUE AS IN RECALL BULLETIN # BULLETIN 14115. AFTER FINDING OUT ON GOOGLE THAT CARS LIKE MINE HAD BEEN RECALLED I CALLED MY CHEVY DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT MY CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR FREE REPAIR, EVEN THOUGH OF CORRECT MAKE AND YEAR. THEY DID NOT SEEM TO CARE AT ALL THAT I WAS STRANDED AND WOULD NOT GIVE ME AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL 3 DAYS LATER, BUT TOLD ME TO CALL GM AS THEY DID NOT SEEM TO WANT TO DEAL WITH ME. I CALLED GM AND THEY SAID THE SAME THAT THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN RECALLED FOR SOME REASON, AND DID NOT SEEM TO CARE EITHER. I TOOK MY CAR TO A REGULAR GARAGE, DRIVING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SO THERE WOULD BE LESS TRAFFIC AND LESS RISK OF A CRASH AND THEY COULD NOT REPAIR IT AS THEY NEEDED THE GM SOFTWARE IN ORDER FOR THEM TO DO THAT, BUT THEY DID TELL ME THAT IT WAS THE SAME ISSUE AS THE ONES THAT WERE BEING RECALLED. NOW I WILL HAVE TO MISS MORE WORK AND TRY TO BEG TO GET AN APPOINTMENT AND SPEND A FORTUNE ON HAVING SOMETHING FIXED THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AS PART OF THE RECALL. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER DURING THE WEEK, AND HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE, I AM AFRAID. I HAVE ALWAYS DRIVEN CHEVROLET VEHICLES BUT THAT IS IT FOR ME, I WILL NEVER BUY A GM AGAIN. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED BY THEIR DISHONESTY, AND POOR QUALITY OF THEIR VEHICLES.

DROVE VEHICLE IN PARKING LOT; WAS NO POWER ASSIST FOR THE STEERING, MANUAL STEERING ONLY. CHECKED OWNER'S MANUAL, NO INFORMATION ABOUT STEERING SYSTEM, OTHER THAN CONTACT DEALER IF MSG APPEARED. DROVE VEHICLE HOME WITH MANUAL STEERING. DID RESEARCH ON NET AND FOUND THAT THE HHR (& SEVERAL OTHER GM MODELS) HAD ELECTRIC MOTOR ASSIST FOR STEERING, AND GM HAD ISSUED A RECALL IN EARLY 2014 FOR THIS PROBLEM; COVERED WIDE VARIETY OF MODELS & YEARS, INCLUDING "SOME" 2010 HHR'S. CONTACTED DEALER, SAID BRING THE VEHICLE IN. STARTED VEHICLE, MESSAGE WAS GONE, POWER STEERING WORKED, BUT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER ANYWAY. SERVICE WRITER WAS UNAWARE OF ANY RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. HE CHECKED THE VIN, SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL; SAID HE "COULD CONTACT GM ABOUT ANY PARTICIPATION IN THE COST OF THE REPAIR; MAY BE 10%, MAY BE 100%, BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE." HHR REMAINED AT DEALER OVERNIGHT;SVC WRITER CALLED NEXT DAY, SAID ELECTRIC MOTOR HAD DEFINITELY FAILED, IT WAS $346, AND GM WOULD NOT COVER ANY OF IT. I HAD DONE MORE RESEARCH ONLINE IN THE MEANTIME, AND THERE WERE SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE GM APPEARED TO BE VERY CONCILIATORY TO GETTING THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED. MY QUESTION IS WHY GM WOULDN'T COVER ANY OF THIS COST, EVEN IF THIS PARTICULAR '10 HHR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE '10 HHR'S COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. A SECOND QUESTION WOULD BE HOW HARD THE SERVICE WRITER ACTUALLY TRIED TO CONTACT SOMEONE AT GM TO GET PARTICIPATION IN THE REPAIR COST. WE HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALLED, POWER STEERING SYSTEM RECALLED, AND RIGHT AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS INSTALLED, THE KEYS STOP WORKING AND WE HAD TO GET TOWED. NOW, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. AND WHEN WE WENT TO RE-START THE CAR, NOTHING. THE POWER WENT TOTALLY OUT, AND THE KEY IS STILL STUCK IN THE IGNITION SWITCH. ABOUT A FEW WEEKS AGO, WE GOT ANOTHER RECALL NOTICE FROM GM THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER MAY NOT PROPERLY TRANSMIT AN ELECTRICAL SIGNAL PROPERLY THAT WILL CAUSE THE KEY TO STAY IN A LOCK POSITION. WE ARE NOW STRANDED. AND WE HAVE TO ONCE AGAIN GET THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER AND PAY FOR A RENTAL. AND THERE ARE STILL SO MANY RECALLED CARS AT THE DEALER THAT THEY ARE SO BEHIND. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH,I HAD A WARNING LIGHT AND THE DISPLAY READ SVC ESC. SHORTLY AFTER, THE POWER STEERING DISPLAY CAME ON IN THE VEHICLE. I THEN IMMEDIATELY LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. IT TOOK GREAT FORCE TO STEER THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE HIGHWAY TO A SAFE LOCATION. I THEN USED THE ONSTAR SERVICE, THEY RAN A QUICK DIAGNOSTIC - RESULT CAME BACK THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM - THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM HAD LOST ELECTRICAL CONNECTION OR HAD FAILED COMPLETELY - THEY WERE UNABLE TO LET ME KNOW WITHOUT HAVING IT DIAGNOSED FURTHER AT A LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND FOUND THAT MY ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PARKED THE VEHICLE AND TURNED IGNITION OFF, CHECKED ALL FLUIDS UNDER HOOD, READ MANUAL AND ADVISED TO TAKE KEYS OUT AND RESTART. SO I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED AS NORMAL, THE WARNING SIGNAL WAS GONE AND WHEEL WAS MOVING. I REPORTED THIS TO GM IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY DO NOT SEEM TO BE ACTING AS IF THIS IS URGENT. THEY HAVE STALLED 2 DAYS NOW WITHOUT DIAGNOSING, THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE ME WITH A LOANER VEHICLE AND THEREFORE I HAVE NO CHOICE THEN TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, KNOWING THE SEVERE THREAT IT HAS TO MYSELF AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. AFTER ABOUT TWO HOURS OF SITTING, MY BROTHER DROVE THE CAR HOME WITH NO PROBLEM. 10/2/13 I TOOK THE CAR, EARLY MORNING, TO BE INSPECTED BY A LOCAL REPAIR COMPANY. AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS ON THE CAR, I WAS TOLD THAT ONCE DIAGNOSTICS BEGAN IMMEDIATELY POWER STEERING CONTROL CIRCUIT WAS DIAGNOSED AS AN ISSUE, THE ONLY ISSUE FROM THE DIAGNOSTIC REPORT, THAT HAD MALFUNCTIONED. DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE AT 65MPH WHEN THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. COULD BARELY GET MANEUVER CAR OFF ROAD ONTO EXIT. SHUT CAR DOWN TO CHECK OUT, RESTARTED CAR, EVERYTHING WORKED FINE AND POWER STEERING WAS FUNCTIONING. THERE WAS A STEERING RECALL THAT I HAD TAKEN CARE OF EARLIER IN THE YEAR AND MY MECHANIC SAID THAT IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS REPLACED WITH EQUALLY DEFECTIVE PARTS. I WAS TRAVELING APPROX. 35 MPH GOING INTO THE CURVE AT THE TIME OF THE PROBLEM, DUE TO THE SUDDEN PROBLEM, I HAD CROSSED THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD DUE TO THE LOSS OF PROPER STEERING AND THE WET ROADS, EVEN THOUGH I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO TURN. I HEARD A CHIME AND SAW THE TROUBLE INDICATOR SHOWING A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING. I FORTUNATELY DIDN'T HAVE ANY ON COMING TRAFFIC OR ANYONE BEHIND ME AT THE TIME OR THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS INJURY ACCIDENT. LIVING IN THE FOOT HILLS OF NC WITH MANY CURVES AND HILLS THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED WITH THE POWER STEERING AND HHR VEHICLES. I WAS ONLY A MILE FROM HOME SO I DROVE THERE AND CHECKED TO SEE WHAT WAS HAPPENING. WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING APPEARS TO HAVE CORRECTED ITSELF. DRIVING ON INTERSTATE DOING 65 MPH, POWER STEERING INDICATOR WENT OFF AND LOST MY POWER STEERING. SINCE THE FIRST TIME, IT CONTINUES TO DO THE SAME THING, SOMETIMES 1-2/DAY SOMETIMES TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT IN ONE TRIP. I HAVE TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART FOR THE POWER STEERING TO WORK AGAIN. *JS

I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE AND SUDDENLY DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING", AND THE STEERING BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. I PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED FOR A MINUTE, THEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE & WAS WORKING FINE. THEN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING". NOW I HAVE TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC AND PAY FOR THE REPAIR. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE HHR & CHEVROLET COBALT HAVE THE SAME SIMILAR POWER STEERING SYSTEM, AND A RECALL FOR THE CHEVROLET COBALT HAS BEEN ISSUED. WHY NOT FOR THE CHEVROLET HHR? THANKS. *JS

WHILE DRIVING APX. 25MPH THE WARNING "DING SOUND" CAME ON & THE DISPLAY READ "POWER STEERING". BY PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND TURNING THE KEY OFF & TURNING IT BACK ON & PUTTING IN DRIVE, IT TEMPORARILY REMEDIES THE PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR LONG. SOMETIMES THIS HAS TO BE DONE 15-20 TIMES. THIS IS DRIVING IN TOWN OR INTERSTATE, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN JULY 30, 2011 WITH 45K MILES ON IT. EIGHT MONTHS LATER, WE STARTED HAVING THIS PROBLEM. I'VE SEEN MANY FORUMS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT AND FEEL THAT THERE DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND SOUNDS LIKE A MALFUNCTION FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY SHOULD STEP UP AND RECALL. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY! *TR *JS

ON 1/13/2012 WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP, I LOST THE POWER STEERING TO MY HHR AND THE DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING". I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD, TURNED IT OFF, AND LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD TO SEE IF I COULD FIND ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE BELTS. NOTHING WAS FOUND AND I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. TWO WEEKS LATER, THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING IT WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT TIME, THEN ONCE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AGAIN. THE POWER STEERING MOTOR IN THE HHR IS THE SAME MODEL NOTED IN THE RECALL FOR THE 2010 CHEVY COBOLT NOTED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE10005. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE ALL OVER THE INTERNET. WHILE I INTEND TO HAVE THE PROBLEM REPAIRED, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT INVESTIGATION FOR THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE IS CONSIDERED AS THE COLBOLT AND HHR SHARE THE SAME FRAME AND ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL IN SCHEMATIC MAKEUP. *TT

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET WHEN MY CAR STARTING BEEPING(WARNING CHIME) AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT TO PULL MY CAR OVER TO THE NEXT SIDE STREET AND FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DO SO. I FOUND I COULD TURN MY CAR OFF AND WAIT 30 SEC AND THE STEERING WOULD COME BACK, BUT WITHIN 3 MIN. I WOULD LOSE IT AGAIN AND I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP REPEATING THE PROCESS. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE STEERING IS UNSAFE IN THIS CAR. *TR
