THE DEALER OPENED THE KEY PUT A RING INTO THE KEY AND ADVISED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD STOP THE IGNITION FROM ROLLING HOWEVER, THE REPAIR DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE WHEN THE CONTACT DROVE AT LOCAL SPEED THE KEY ROTATED BACK TO THE OFF POSITION AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SHUT-OFF. THE CONTACT MOVED THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROADWAY TO A SAFE LOCATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE KEY POSITION MOVED WHILE IT WAS IN THE IGNITION. THE FAILURE AFFECTED THE ENGINE, POWER STEERING, AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO BRAKE. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED HEAD ON INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED AND DECLARED THE VEHICLE DESTROYED. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED AN EXTENSIVE LACERATION WHEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG COMPONENTS PROJECTED FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. FOLLOW-UP ON COMPLAINT# 10650094. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM,AND TRIED TO GET ASSISTANCE FROM GM WITH NO RESULTS OTHER THAT THE RUN-AROUND. I HAVE EXPLAINED THAT THE RECALL OF THIS VEHICLE AND REPAIR THAT IS SUGGESTED IS NOT THE ISSUE. THE IGNITION IS A 2 PART SWITCH AND THE MECHANICAL PART OF THE SWITCH IS ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IN MY CASE IS THAT THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE SWITCH IS WHAT CONTROLS THE POWER, BRAKES, AIRBAG, AND ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS. YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE ENTIRE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE IGNITION SWITCH SEIZED AND PREVENTED THE KEY FROM BEING INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE OF $300, INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR, AND AN ADDITIONAL $12 FOR A NEW SET OF KEYS FOR THE REPLACEMENT IGNITION SWITCH. UPON ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR, NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN TURNING THE KEY. EVENTUALLY THE CAR WILL START AFTER A LONG DELAY. THIS OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY OVER TIME, ALWAYS REQUIRING A LONG WAIT (AND NOTHING ELSE) BEFORE THE CAR WOULD START - RESULTING ME BEING LATE FOR WORK OR MISSING IMPORTANT MEETINGS. ON READING EXTENSIVE REPORTS OF THE VERY PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET (ON MANY GM YEARS/MODELS), I LEARNED THAT IT IS A "SAFETY" FEATURE TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM BEING STOLEN A NECESSARY COMPUTER READING OF A CHIP IN THE KEY! FURTHER READING INDICATED THAT (1) THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM (2) GM CHARGES OVER $1000 TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM (VERIFIED BY MY GM DEALER), AND (3) THE "FIX" DOESN'T WORK (THE PROBLEM CONTINUES)! I CAN THINK OF FEW DESIGN FLAWS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY MORE DANGEROUS (NOT TO MENTION INCONVENIENT) THAN HAVING YOUR CAR RANDOMLY REFUSING TO START - FOR INSTANCE LATE AT NIGHT IN A PARKING LOT OR GARAGE WHEN STORES ARE CLOSING OR CLOSED - OR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE FROM A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCE FAR EXCEEDS ANY BENEFIT FROM PROTECTING YOUR CAR FROM BEING STOLEN BY USING A FAULTY PASSCODE SYSTEM. RECEIVED 2000 CHEVY IMPALA AS AN INHERITANCE. WITHIN 2 WEEKS CAR AT TIMES WOULD NOT START. ALL LIGHTS ON DASH WOULD ILLUMINATE FOLLOWED BY THE YELLOW/ORANGE SECURITY LIGHT. THIS IS DUE TO A PASSLOCK PROBLEM WHERE THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM THINKS THAT SOMETHING OTHER THAN A LEGITIMATE KEY IS BEING USED TO TRY AND START THE CAR. MY SISTER HAD THIS PROBLEM AND AT TIMES WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION TO "ON POSITION" AND WAIT 10 MINUTES. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF RESEARCH I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT TO RESET THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM THE KEY NEEDED TO BE LEFT IN THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE "ON POSITION" THEN REMOVED AND REPEATED TWO MORE TIMES (3 TIMES, 30 MINUTES TOTAL). AFTER DOING THIS I HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED, AND PLENTY OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO HAD THEIR VEHICLES TOWED AND FACE A DIAGNOSIS FEE (AND PLENTY OF TIMES MISDIAGNOSIS). ACCORDING TO ALL THE INFORMATION READILY AVAILABLE CHEVY/GM HAS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND I CONSIDER IT SHAMEFUL THAT THEY DO NOT ALLOW SOME KIND OF CONCESSION OR MODIFICATION SO THAT A CUSTOMER OF THEIRS WITH A LEGITIMATE KEY CANNOT START THE VEHICLE. *TR

THE DEALER DETERMINED THE BACKFIRING OCCURRED DUE TO THE CONTACT STARTING THE ENGINE WHILE APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.

ENGINE SHUTS DOWN FOR NO APPARENT REASON. ALMOST LIKE SOMEONE TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF. I PURCHASED THIS 2000 CHEV. IMPALA LS IN MAY 2005. ON MAY 30, THE ENGINE COUGHED ONCE BUT CONTINUED RUNNING SMOOTHLY, SO I DIDN'T CONSIDER IT A PROBLEM. THEN JUNE 29 IT COUGHED AGAIN BUT CONTINUED RUNNING SMOOTHLY. THAT EVENING ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK WITH NO WARNING, THE ENGINE JUST QUIT RUNNING. AFTER IT SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR A FEW MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO START IT AND CONTINUE ON MY DRIVE HOME. SINCE THEN, BETWEEN JULY 5 AND AUGUST 10, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN 7 TIMES. 3 OF THOSE WERE ON AUGUST 10. EACH TIME, AFTER A FEW MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. I TOOK IT TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR(POWER CHEVROLET, IRVINE, CA),ON AUGUST 12, AFTER A SHORT DIAGNOSIS, THE COMPLAINT WAS SIGNED OFF AS" ROAD TEST 5 MILES UNABLE TO DUPLICATE CUSTOMER CONCERN. THROTTLE BODY DIRTY, CLEANED THROTTLE BODY" SINCE THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON A FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR THE SERVICE REP. HAD IT REPLACED. I DIDN'T RECEIVE THE OLD REGULATOR, BUT IT DIDN'T CURE THE PROBLEM OF THE ENGINE SHUTTING DOWN FOR NO APPARENT REASON, BECAUSE ON AUGUST 22 IT DID IT AGAIN (TWICE). SOMEONE AT GM NEEDS TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM AND INFORM THE SERVICE PERSONNEL OF THE FIX. AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER COULD BE IN REAL TROUBLE IF THIS HAPPENED.

THE CAR HESITATES WHEN PULLING OUT ESPECIALLY AFTER IT HAS SET FOR AN HOUR AFTER IT WAS PARKED FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME. IT HAS A MISS AT TIMES. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE DEALER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THIS PROBLEM 5 TIMES NOW. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 3 WEEKS AND STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE CAR HAS A MISS WHEN ACCELERATING, ALSO WHEN PULLING OUT THE GAS PEDAL IS PUSHED DOWN AND THE CAR WILL NOT GO IMMEDIATLY AND THEN TAKES OFF. AS STATED WE NEVER KNOW WHEN THIS WILL OCCUR. IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN ON 1/17/01 PULLING OUT OF MY MOTHER'S DRIVEWAY. I STEPPED ON THE GAS AND THE CAR HESITATED AS I PULLED OUT INTO THE ROADWAY AND IT FAILED TO GO RIGHT AWAY. IMPALA CONTROL COMPUTER - UPON TRACTION CONTROL ACTIVATION (WHEEL SLIP), CONTROL COMPUTER ACTIVATES SECURITY SYSTEM WHICH KILLS ENGINE AND PREVENTS IT FROM BEING RESTARTED. MYSELF AND MY THREE CHILDREN WERE ALMOST KILLED BY A PASSING TRUCK WHEN WE HAD TO LEAVE VEHICLE TO SEEK ASSISTANCE. DEALER REPLACED COMPUTER, HOWEVER, FIRMWARE RELEASE IS LIKELY PROBLEM.
