Q-What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? A-Suspension and steering effective. Any time I drive and make turns it makes like a clunking noise. You can actually feel it in the floor board. It's worse when you are driving down a not so smooth road. You can look at it as soon as possible. Q-How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? A-Control arm might SNAP causing you to lose control of my vehicle and crash into other drivers. Q-Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? A-Firestone has inspected my car. Q-Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? A-No my vehicle has not. Q-Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? A-No warning signs of any kind. This started within the last month or two.

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-40 MPH, the vehicle was vibrating and jumping. The contact drove to his brother's residence to inspect the vehicle. The contact removed the front passenger’s side tire and wheel and upon removing the hub, the engine moved. The contact was self-diagnosed that the front lower control arm was fractured. The contact was able to drive to his residence. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 218,000.

WHEN FIRST PURCHASED I HAD TO CHANGE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP I WAS TOLD THEY GET A LOT OF PEOPLE W IMPALAS SAME AS MY YEAR 2008 THAT NEEDED TO HAVE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CHANGED EVERY SO OFTEN BECAUSE THEY WOULD GO OUT AND IT WOULD CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO GO ON AND OFF BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS SENDING THE WRONG SIGNALS.I WOULD DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY AND STREET IT WOULD CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE TO COME ON AND SLOW MY CAR DOWN ALMOST LEADING INTO ACCIDENTS BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. IT WOULD COME AND GO ON AS IT WANTED. THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE CAR IS SOMETHING IN THE CAR CONTINUES TO DRAIN MY BATTERY. I'VE GOTTEN A NEW BATTERY AND IT STILL DRAINS CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO GET IT RECHARGED. THE SUSPENSION I WAS ALSO TOLD FOR THE YEAR OF MY CAR IS BAD. WHEN PURCHASED I FOUND OUT THAT AGAIN PEOPLE THAT PURCHASED THESE YEARS OF VEHICLES HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CONTROL ARMS AND THAT I NOW HAVE TO TAKE IT TO GET FIXED BECAUSE ONE HIT TO A POT HOLE CAN CAUSE THE UNDER PART OF THE CAR TO BREAK AND CAUSE A BAD ACCIDENT. I DID NOT KNOW IMPALAS HAD THIS MANY PROBLEMS. I SEEN THE POLICE IMPALAS FOR 2008 WERE RECALLED FOR SUSPENSION, BUT THEY ALL SEEM TO SHARE THIS COMMON PROBLEM AS WELL AS THE ACTUATOR CONTINUOUSLY CLICKING. IT SEEMS TO BE AN EASY FIX, BUT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO FIX SOMETHING THAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE IMPALAS.

I ONLY HAVE 77,586 MILES ON MY CAR AND A LOT OF PROBLEMS FOR THAT TYPE OF USE. WE HAVE A 1998 CHEVY TAHOE THAT WE LOVE. YOU SHOULD STAND BEHIND YOUR BAD PRODUCTS THAT YOU PUT OUT.

ONE DAY I WAS DRIVING MY CAR HOME MAKING A RIGHT TURN AND MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING NOISE AND WAS ACTING AS IF IT WAS GOING TO CUT OFF. SO I PARKED MY CAR CALLED MY MECHANIC HE CAME OVER AND LOOKED AT THE CAR I SAID IT COULD BE A POSSIBLE ROCKER ARM THAT HAS GONE IN THE CAR OR I COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON GIVING ME A CODE FOR A CAM POSITIONING SENSOR / SOLENOID. ALSO WHEN I PURCHASE THE CAR NOT TOO LONG AFTER ME DRIVING I NOTICED THERE WAS SOME NOISE COMING FROM MY BACK TIRES. I COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT FOR A WHILE UNTIL ONE DAY I LOOKED AT MY TIRES AND NOTICED THAT ON THE INSIDE THERE WAS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF SCRAPING GOING ON WEARING AWAY MY TREAD. IT WOULD ALWAYS SEEM TO HAPPEN WHEN I GOT NEW TIRES ON THE CAR SO I THOUGHT MAYBE THE TIRES WERE TOO BIG FOR THE CAR BUT I ORDERED WHAT THE MANUFACTOR SUGGESTED THE TIRE SIZE SHOULD BE FOR THE CAR. SO I HAD A TIRE SPECIALIST LOOK AT IT AND AN ALIGNMENT SPECIALIST LOOK AT IT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SUSPENSION SPRINGS MAY BE CAUSING MY ISSUE. THEY SAID THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CHANGE THE SIZE OF MY TIRE FOR THEM TO FIT BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS ARE CORRECT AND THE TIRES WERE THE RIGHT SIZE FOR THE CAR.

2008 CHEVY IMPALA LTZ -- I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE REAR INNER TIRES WEARING DOWN TO THE CHORDS JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON HERE. I KNOW IT'S NOT THE TIRE BRAND, ETC. AS I'VE HAD A REPUTABLE MECHANIC PUT ON TWO SETS OF TIRES. I FOUND ARTICLES ON A LAWSUIT AND THE FACT THAT GM WILL FIX THE POLICE CARS WITH THIS ISSUE, BUT NOT THE GENERAL PUBLIC'S. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A COMMUTER CAR FOR MY SONS THAT WILL BE COLLEGE STUDENTS AND I NEED IT TO LAST. I WANT A COPY OF THE TSB #08032A THAT ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE. I JUST WANT MY CAR FIXED SO THAT I DON'T KEEP BLOWING THROUGH SETS OF TIRES IT IS GETTING RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE. MY LAST SET WAS SUPPOSED TO WEAR OUT AT 60,000 AND ONLY LASTED 20,000. I AM ACTUALLY ON MY SECOND SET, SO BASICALLY $1600 INTO TIRES ALONE, NOT TO MENTION WHAT IT'S GOING TO COST ME FOR THE SPINDLE/CAMBOR/REAR TIE RODS THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TSB MENTIONED ABOVE. GM SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS AND IT SHOULD BE A MASSIVE RECALL. THESE CARS ARE PROLIFIC IN SOCIETY. LOL....WE BAILED THEM OUT IN 2008, AND THEY WERE CRANKING OUT LEMONS THE SAME YEAR....IRONIC!! THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT FOUND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V377000 (SUSPENSION), WHICH ONLY INCLUDED CHEVROLET IMPALA POLICE VEHICLES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 102,000.

I AM INFORMING YOU OF SOME VERY SERIOUS CONCERNS IN REGARDS TO PARTS OF THE 07 AND 08 CHEVY IMPALA THAT HAVE FAILED CAUSING ACCIDENTS AS WELL AS INJURY AND GRAVE POTENTIAL FOR FATALITIES.AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYING, SEAT BELTS NOT LOCKING ON IMPACT FIRST AND FOREMOST I HAVE REQUESTED COPIES OF THE PAPERWORK THAT WAS SUBMITTED TO THE COURTS IN SOMERSET WI. THIS SHOWED EXACTLY WHAT TOOK PLACE CAUSEING AN ACCIDENT THAT WAS CONSIDERED NEGLIGENT DUE TO MEDICATIONS I WAS ON AND MY DISABILITY. THE MECHANIC GAVE ME THIS REPORT ALONG WITH INFO STATING THAT THIS WAS A HUGE PROBLEM IN FLEET POLICE VEHICALS. THE INFO STATED THAT THE POLICE VEHICALS WERE FIXED AND CHECKED HOWEVER THIS PART HAS NO RECALL OR REVISION TO CORRECT THE SAFETY ISSUES THAT WE CAN FIND. MY VEHICAL DOES HAVE HIGH MILLAGE HOWEVER IT HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF THANKS TO ERICKSON OIL AND MECHANIC FRIENDS. THIS PART SNAPPING AFTER CRACKING ESILY RESULTED IN COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL AS WELL AS THE CAR LOCKING UP AND BECOMING IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER AND STOP. IT IS DISTURBING THAT THESE PARTS WERE NOT CORRECTED FROM A MANUFACTERING ASPECT (THIS WAS LOOKED AT BY A MACHINEST, AS WELL AS AN ENGINEER AND BY THE QAULITY/DIMESIONS/STRUCTURE THIS PART EASILY LOOKED DEFECTIVE) THE VISUAL AS WELL AS SKILLED APROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING DROVE US TO LOOK UP RECALLS PRIOR TO BUYING A NEW PART. WE COULD NOT FIND ANY. JUST INFO THAT THIS EXACT MAKE AND MODEL WERE PURCHASED AS FLEET VEHICALS IN 07 AND 08. PROBLEMS WITH MANY OF THESE CARS RESULTED IN PULLING ALL OF THE FLEET/GOVNT PATROL CARS IN TO BE FIXED/INVESTIGATED. HOWEVER WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND A RECALL OR WARNING THAT SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC. I AM CURRENTLY LOOKING INTO HELP TO INVESTIGATE AND HELP GET THIS LOOKED AT AS IT CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS WELL AS BEING UNSTABLE AND FAULTY IN ANOTHER MINOR IMPACT ACCIDENT POTENTIAALY INCREASING FATALITY/INJURIES.

WE ENDED UP BUYING FOUR NEW MICHELIN TIRES FOR AROUND $600.00. THE COSTCO GUY THOUGHT THAT SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG WITH THE CAR. AFTER I GOT HOME I CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AS TO WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE 2007 AND 2008 CHEVROLET IMPALA'S. THERE HAD BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN #08032A SENT OUT IN 2011 TO REPLACE THE SPINDLE RODS ON ALL THE 2007 AND 2008 IMPALA'S THAT WERE SOLD AS POLICE CARS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM THAT THEY WERE HAVING WITH REAR TIRE WEAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT SERVICE BULLETIN EXTENDED ALL THE OTHER 2007 AND 2008 CHEVROLET IMPALA'S. THE PART NUMBER FOR THE SPINDLE ROD IS THE SAME ON ALL 2008 IMPALAS, POLICE OR NON POLICE. THE WEAR IS ON THE INNER MOST 5% OF THE TREAD. AND IT IS EXTREME WEAR, ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE STEEL BELTS. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND A GM SERVICE BULLETIN FOR 2007-8 IMPALA TIRE WEAR AND SUSPENSION PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. BUT THAT BULLETIN ONLY CALLED FOR SERVICE ON MODELS WITH POLICE SUSPENSION IN THE REAR. THE SOLUTION REQUIRED REPLACEMENT SPINDLE ARMS TO BE INSTALLED. CALLED GM AND THEY WILL NOT REPLACE MY CONSUMER SPINDLES. BUT I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. TIRE BLOWOUT. DUE TO DEFECTIVE REAR SUSPENSION THAT CAUSED TIRES TO BE MISALIGNED. THE DEFECTIVE SPINDLES CAUSED THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR TO RIDE ON THE VERY INSIDE CORNERS OF THE REAR TIRES. 90% OF THE TIRE WEAR WAS ON 10% OF THE TIRES. THIS CAUSED THE HIDDEN INSIDE ONE INCH OF THE TIRE TO WEAR THROUGH THE TIRE SAFETY BELTS, EXPOSE THE TIRE THREADS, AND THEN BLOWOUT. BOTH REAR TIRES DID THIS. THE PICTURES ARE STUNNING TO SEE HOW MUCH OF THE TIRE TREAD LOOKS PERFECT AND HOW DEVASTATING THE WEAR WAS TO THE INNER MOST INCH. TO MOST PEOPLE LOOKING AT THE TIRES FROM THE SIDE, THEY LOOKED FINE.NO ONE EXPECTS THE DAMAGE THEY DON'T SEE HIDDEN FROM DAILY VIEW. THE TIRE WEAR IS EXTREMELY ACCELERATED ONCE IT REACHES THE SOFT MATERIAL JUST UNDER THE TREAD. IT CAN GO FROM THIN TREAD TO A HOLE IN THE SAFETY BELT MATERIAL IN 1000 MILES OF WEAR. GM ISSUED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN IN 2008 ABOUT THIS EXACT SYMPTOM, BUT ONLY CALLED FOR REPAIR OF POLICE MODEL IMPALAS. THEY HAVE NOT CALLED FOR REPAIR OF SIMILAR GENERAL PUBLIC OWNERS MODELS. WE PURCHASED THE CAR NEW FROM GRAND PRIZE CHEVROLET. AT ABOUT 8000 MILES I NOTICED UNEVEN WEAR ON THE FRONT TIRES AND CALLED THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THE WARRANTY ONLY COVERED WHEEL ALIGNMENT FOR THE FIRST 6000 MILES. ACCORDINGLY, I TOOK THE CAR TO TIRE KINGDOM, A TIRE DEALER, AND HAD THE CAR ALIGNED. AT 20,000 MILES I AGAIN NOTICED UNEVEN WEAR IN THE TIRES AND TOOK THE CAR BACK TO TIRE KINGDOM. THEY ALIGNED IT AGAIN AND SAID IT WAS OK. IT WASN'T. AT ABOUT 35,000 MILES IT WAS ALIGNED AGAIN BY TIRE KINGDOM AND I PUT IN NEW TIRES. THE STORE MANAGER, [XXX] TOLD ME HE HAD DONE THE ALIGNMENT HIMSELF AND THAT ALL WAS WITHIN SPECS. AT 52000 MILES ONE OF THE TIRES FAILED. IT WAS ALL WORN ON THE INSIDE EDGE WHERE I HAD NOT NOTICED THE UNEVEN WEAR. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MAROONE CHEVROLET WHO TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT ALIGN THE CAR WITHOUT THE INSTALLATION OF WHAT THEY CALL A "CAMBER KIT" BECAUSE MY 2008 IMPALA HAD NO OTHER WAY OF HAVING THE CAMBER ADJUSTED. IN SUMMARY: MY 2008 IMPALA WAS MISALIGNED WHEN I PURCHASED IT AND 52000 MILES LATER IS STILL MISALIGNED BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER FAILED TO INCLUDE CAMBER ADJUSTMENT IN THE DESIGN. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DEALER ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECT, HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM UNLESS WE PAY THEIR BLACKMAIL. ACCORDING TO A GM BULLETIN NO. 08032A DATED JULY 2008 THAT THE INSTALLATION OF NEW REAR WHEEL SPINDLE RODS TO CORRECT THE WEAR PROBLEM WAS NECESSARY. THIS BULLETIN HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO INCLUDE NON-POLICE VEHICLES. I SHOWED THE SERVICE ADVISOR THE BULLETIN AND HE CONFIRMED IT WAS UPGRADED TO INCLUDE NON-POLICE VEHICLES. I AM WORRIED THAT THEIR REPAIR WON'T COMPLETELY CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THERE WASN'T AN ADJUSTMENT FOR THE REAR WHEELS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS, WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE REAR SPINDLE RODS WERE FAULTY AND CAUSED THE TIRES TO PREMATURELY WEAR. THE FAULTY REAR SPINDLE RODS ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE MISALIGNMENT OF THE VEHICLE. A SET OF FOUR TIRES WERE PREVIOUSLY REPLACED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 16,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH UNUSUAL WEAR AND/OR BLOWOUTS ON THE TIRES OF MY 2008 CHEVY IMPALA. I FIRST STARTED HAVING ISSUE WITH TIRES IN DEC 2008 AND STILL CONTINUE TIL THIS DAY. WHEN I QUESTIONED IF THERE WAS A POSSIBILITY IT WAS THE VEHICLE AND NOT THE TIRES, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP IN 2010, IT WAS FAULTY 'FACTORY INSTALLED' TIRES. I HAVE REPLACED MORE THAN ONCE ALL THE TIRES ON MY VEHICLE. NOW I FIND OUT THAT GM HAS RECALLED POLICE ISSUE 2008 IMPALAS BUT NOT THOSE FOR THE EVERYDAY CONSUMER. *KB

MY FAMILY WAS TRAVELING TO A FUNERAL DRIVING A 2008 IMPALA AT 75MPH. TIRES WERE PROPERLY INFLATED AND VISUALLY CHECKED FOR WEAR BY GENERAL OBSERVATION.TIRES APPEARED TO HAVE PLENTY OF TREAD AND NO CUPPING. LEFT REAR TIRE DETONATED SENDING TIRE TREAD/BELTS/DEBRIS INTO WHEEL WELL AREA. THIS RIPPED FUEL FILLER ASSEMBLY LOOSE AND SENT IT BELOW CAR WHERE IT TRAILED WITH NO REMAINING FUEL CAP AND FRAYED SENSOR WIRES EXPOSED. CAR WAS BROUGHT TO A SAFE STOP BESIDE INTERSTATE. WHEN TRYING TO MAKE TEMPORARY REPAIRS IT WAS NOTICED THAT OPPOSITE REAR TIRE HAD WEAR DOWN TO STEEL BELTS ON INSIDE TWO INCHES. THE REMAINING TIRE APPEARED ALMOST NEW FROM EXTERIOR VIEW. IT WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH BLOWN TIRE AS THIS TIRE WAS JUST AS DEADLY. REPAIR BY INSURANCE EXCEEDED $4,000. CONTACTED CHEVROLET DEALER WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SERVICE ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED SO THAT REPAIRS TO REAR SUSPENSION CAN BE MADE. MOST PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND TOTALLY UNAWARE THAT THEIR TIRES ONLY APPEAR SAFE. UNLESS THE CAR IS PUT ON A LIFT RACK THE WEAR ISSUE IS NOT OBVIOUS TO THE AVERAGE AUTOMOBILE OWNER. *TR

PREVIOUSLY FILED COMPLAINT IN 10/2009 GM OFFERED $1000 VOUCHER FOR THE PROBLEM. TURNED VEHICLE INTO DEALER IN SEPT 2009. TOLD GM THAT I WOULD MAKE PAYMENTS UNTIL JAN 2010 AND TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION TO MAKING OUR 2008 IMPALA SAFE TO TRANSPORT MY FAMILY. THEY REFUSED TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM AND THE CAR SAT AT DEALERS UNTIL MAY 2010 WHEN A COLLECTION COMPANY CALLED MY HOME AND I TOLD THEM THE STORY. THEY ASKED WHERE THE CAR WAS AND I TOLD THEM. THEY PUT ME ON HOLD AND CALLED THE DEALER TO CONFIRM. THAT DAY THEY WENT AND PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND STARTED SENDING COLLECTION NOTICES. I TOLD THEM CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THEY SOLD AT AUCTION AND SENT ME TO A COLLECTION AGENCY FOR THE BALANCE OF $9700. THE CAR RESOLD TO AN UNSUSPECTING CUSTOMER IN NH. GM IS STILL TRYING TO COLLECT THE BALANCE AND HAS OFFERED A COMPROMISE $4800. THESE VEHICLES HAVE KILLED UNSUSPECTING CONSUMERS BUT DOCUMENTATION DOES NOT EXIST?? I AM SURE IF A STUDY WAS DONE ON ALL HIGHWAY /ACCIDENTS/DEATHS CONNECTED TO 2007 & 2008 IMPALAS, REAR TIRE WEAR WOULD BE WELL REPRESENTED. WE OWN A 2008 CHEVY IMPALA LTZ AND HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BACK TIRES DUE TO EXCESSIVE WEAR. WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR ITS SCHEDULED 6000 ROTATION ONLY TO DISCOVER THE TIRES WERE SHOT. THE DEALER WOULD NOT HONOR REPLACING THE TIRE AND MENTIONED NO REASONABLE SOLUTION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE CAR THOROUGHLY AND HAVE DISCOVERED DISTURBING FACTS ABOUT THE IMPALAS SPINDLE RODS. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY DOCUMENTED CASES ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH VERY SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE 2007 AND 2008 IMPALAS. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I FIND A CLASS ACTION SUIT HAS BEEN FILED AND GM HAS BEEN DRAGGING THEIR FEET. THEY RECALLED POLICE CARS, BUT NOT CARS BELONGING TO CITIZENS. ANY IMPALA THAT IS SHOWING COMMON WEAR SHOULD BE RECALLED. I CAN DEAL WITH A DEFECT, BUT MY FAMILY WAS AT RISK AS WE TRAVELED IN THE CAR TOGETHER 1200 MILES CROSS COUNTRY AND HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE DEFECT. TIRES SHOULD NOT BE WORN TO THE STEEL AFTER LESS THAN 6000 MILES. GM IS PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT WITH THEIR PATRONS. *KB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR TIRE HAD EXCESSIVE WEAR DUE TO A FAULTY REAR SUSPENSION. I AM EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE INSIDE TIRE WEAR ON MY REAR TIRES AND APPARENTLY IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2008 IMPALAS. I SPOKE WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE OBVIOUSLY NOT IN THIS COUNTRY, AND WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO INSPECT MY CAR. I THEN SPOKE TO A SERVICE MANAGER WHO DENIED ANY KNOWN PROBLEMS. HE THEN LET IT SLIP THAT A MODIFICATION OF THE STRUTS WAS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE PROPER ALIGNMENT OF THE REAR AND THAT GM WOULD NOT COVER IT. THEY WILL HOWEVER REPAIR POLICE IMPALAS AT NO CHARGE. I DECLINED TO PAY ONLY TO BE TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR ANYWAY, KIND OF LIKE ADDING INSULT TO INJURY. WHEN WILL ACTION BE TAKEN TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS DUE TO BLOW OUTS; WHICH APPARENTLY HAVE OCCURRED? NOT EVERYONE LOOKS UNDER THEIR CAR TO INSPECT THE TIRES AND THIS WEAR IS NOT VISIBLE OTHERWISE. 2008 CHEVROLET IMPALA IS VERY UNSTABLE ON SNOW OR ICE COVERED ROADS. THE REAR END TENDS TO SWERVE BACK AND FORTH WHEN IT ENCOUNTERS EVEN THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF ICE OR SNOW. I HAVE OVER THIRTY YEARS DRIVING IN MICHIGAN WINTERS AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR SO UNSTABLE IN THESE CONDITIONS. I HAVE A 2002 CHEVY VENTURE AND A 97 BONNEVILLE THAT I DROVE IN THE SAME CONDITIONS (SAME ROAD AND TIME FOR COMPARISON) AND THEY BOTH FELT SOLID EVEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS. DRIVING THE IMPALA SS ON WINTER ROADS IN INDIANA HAS BECOME A CHALLENGE WITH THIS CAR. ANY ICE OR SNOW ON THE ROAD WILL ONLY ALLOW YOU TO DRIVE 45 MPH AT THE MAX AND THEN THE REAR OF THE CAR STARTS TO SWERVE BACK AND FORTH AS IF THE TIRES ARE FIGHTING ONE AND ANOTHER FOR CONTROL. CONTACTED THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT IT IS A TIRE PROBLEM WITH THE GOOD YEAR EAGLE RS-A P235/50 R 18 AND THEY HAVE HAD A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ON NO TRACTION WITH THESE TIRES. SERVICE REP STATED THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE TAKEN OFF AND NEW TIRES PUT ON. NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. CALLED GOOD YEAR CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD THEM THE PROBLEM AND THEY SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR ME. TOOK IT TO THE AUTHORIZED GOOD YEAR DEALER AND THEY CALLED BACK AND SAID THE TIRES HAVE HALF THEIR TREAD LEFT AND NO PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRES. HE STATED THAT THE TIRE IS TO WIDE FOR DRIVING IN THE WINTER TIME AND BASICALLY FLOATS ON THE ICE AND SNOW AND WOULD SUGGEST ONLY DIVING THE CAR IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. SO HERE IS THE DILEMMA, THE MANUFACTURE KNOWS THAT THEY HAVE HAD A LOT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE TIRES (WHICH ARE THE ORIGINAL TIRES THAT ARE SOLD WITH THE CAR. THE TIRE MANUFACTURE STATES THE TIRE IS TO WIDE FOR DRIVING ON SNOW OR ICE AND I NEED TO PARK IT INTO SUMMER GETS HERE AND IF SO IF I DRIVE THE CAR IN THE WINTER, I HAVE BEEN WARNED THAT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.

I PURCHASED MY 2008 IMPALA WITH 28K MILES IN MARCH 2009-CERTIFIED USED. I HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRES WITHIN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP ( I WAS TOLD THAT GM USES CHEAP TIRES. FROM THE OUTSIDE THE TREAD WAS FINE AND IT APPEARED TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE BUT WHEN IT WAS ON THE LIFT THE TOLD ME THEY ALL HAD METAL SHOWING. I PAID THIS CAR OFF AND GAVE IT TO MY SON IN APRIL 2010- HE HAS SINCE CHANGED ALL 4 TIRES BACK TIRES 3 TIMES. WE HAD THEM ROTATED AND ALIGNED TWICE, THAT IS WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE TIRES HAD WORN ON THE INSIDE AGAIN. THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW UNLESS IT IS ON A LIFT. MY SON TOOK THE IMPALA TO THE DEALER SERVICE YESTERDAY AND PURCHASED HIS 2 TIRES- IT WAS AGREED BY SERVICE MANAGER THAT IF WE TOOK THE CAR THERE AND BOUGHT TIRES FROM UNIVERSAL THAT HE WOULD PUT THEM ON, DO AN ALIGNMENT AND MOST IMPORTANT INSTALL THE CAMBER BOLT KIT AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. THIS WAS ALSO TOLD TO CHEVY BY (THE SERVICE MANAGER) WHEN THEY CALLED HIM. I DIDN'T GO WITH MY SON TO PICK UP THE CAR- I DID HOWEVER PAY THE $350 WHICH WAS THE PRICE AGREED IMAGINE MY COMPLETE ANGER WHEN I FOUND OUT LAST NIGHT THE CAMBER BOLT KIT WAS NOT INSTALLED AND ALL THAT WAS DONE 2 NEW TIRES AND AN ALIGNMENT! THE CHEVY IMPALA SEEMS TO BE A FINE VEHICLE IN FOR NORMAL, EVERYDAY DRIVING. IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, THOUGH, IT'S HANDLING BECOMES VERY UNPREDICTABLE. STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH MY 2008 CHEVY IMPALA WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A TIRE BALANCE PROBLEM. DID REQUIRED TIRE ROTATION AS RECOMMENDED AT 6000, 10,000 AND THEN AGAIN AT 13,500. DEALER SAID TIRES MAY BE OUT OF ROUND AND SUGGESTED ROAD FORCE BALANCING AT 16,500 MILES. THIS DID NOT CHANGE THE ISSUE, SO WENT TO GOODYEAR DEALER AND FOUND OUT THAT THE INSIDE 2 INCHES OF ALL FOUR TIRES WERE WEARING EXCESSIVELY WITH THE REAR TWO LESS THAT 2/32 INCHES OF TREAD LEFT. GOODYEAR SHOT THE ALIGNMENT AND SHOWED THAT THE ALIGNMENT WAS WAY OFF AND TIRES COULD NOT BE WARRANTED WITH AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE. TOOK BACK TO CHEVY DEALER TO INFORM THEM OF THE ALIGNMENT ISSUE. THEY SAID ALIGNMENT WAS NOT WARRANTED AFTER 7,500 MILES AND ALSO WOULD NOT REPLACE THE 4 TIRES. I DID GET THE DEALER TO GRATUITOUSLY DO A 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT THAT ALSO SHOWED THE CAMBER AND TOE, ESPECIALLY IN THE REAR WAS "OUT OF TOLERANCE AND EXCEEDED CROSS-TOLERANCE" ON THEIR MACHINE AS WELL. THE CAMBER COULD NOT BE ADJUSTED WITHOUT EXTRA WORK (ELONGATING THE BOLT HOLES OR A CHAMBER ALIGNMENT KIT). CONTACTED GM COMPLAINT LINE FOR RESOLUTION TO NO AVAIL, SAYING I HAD TO PROVE THAT THERE IS A DEFECT ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS AN INHERENT SAFETY PROBLEM WITH 2007 AND 2008 IMPALAS THAT HAS FOSTERED NUMEROUS COMPLAINT TO YOU INCLUDING 5 ALREADY THIS YEAR. GM ISSUED A TSB #08032 FOR POLICE IMPALAS THAT ARE ON THE SAME PLATFORM AND SUSPENSION, BUT NEVER EXTENDED THAT TO THE PUBLIC. SEEMS TO ME THAT THE REAR SUSPENSION HAS AN SEVERE DEFECT THAT CAN CAUSE TIRE BLOWOUT WITHOUT WARNING. NO TIRES SHOULD WEAR LIKE THAT WITH LESS THAN 17,000 MILES WITHOUT A REAR SUSPENSION AND ALIGNMENT PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED FOR REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF THE PARTS AND TIRES. I SAW AT LEAST 12 COMPLAINTS IN THE FIRST 24 PAGES OF 2007 IMPALA COMPLAINTS TO THE ODI. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THIS CONTINUING IMPALA ISSUE. *TR

MY 08 IMPALA SS HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH TIRES EXCESSIVELY. I REPLACED THE BACK TIRES ALMOST 4 MONTHS AGO AND NEW TIRES ARE NEEDED AGAIN. THE REAR TIRES ARE WEARING ON THE INSIDES OF THE TIRES. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF MY LOCAL GM DEALER WHO "ASSURED" ME THAT NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE REAR SUSPENSION AND THAT I NEED TO ROTATE THE TIRES EVERY 6000 MILES THAT WAS WHAT WAS WRONG THAT I WASN'T FOLLOWING THE OWNERS MANUAL. SO I THOUGHT IT REALLY WAS MY FAULT SO I SPENT THE $500 TO BUY TWO NEW TIRES AND NOW ALMOST 4 MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING. I GOT THIS 2008 IMPALA IN NOV.2007. IT HAS A VIBRATION THAT STARTS ABOUT 37MPH THROUGH 47MPH. AND AT 75MPH IT IS WORST. THE DEALER REBALANCED THE TIRES, I WENT BACK AND THE TIRES WERE REBALANCED AGAIN. SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THEY ALL HAVE THIS VIBRATION. I CALLED CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION,TALKED TO 3 DIFFERENT PEOPLE,THE LAST PERSON SAID THEY WERE NOT GOING TO CHANGE THE TIRES,AND IT WAS NORMAL OF THAT CAR. THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR ANY CAR. GM ISSUED A LETTER TO 2007 AND 2008 IMPALA POLICE VEHICLE OWNERS CONCERNING A CONDITION THAT LEADS TO REAR WHEEL MISALIGNMENT, RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE WEAR TO THE INBOARD SIDE OF THE TIRES. MY 2008 IMPALA SS IS EXHIBITS THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT GM WILL ONLY FIX POLICE VEHICLES. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE PROBLEM EFFECTS MORE THAT JUST THE POLICE VEHICLES BECAUSE THE REAR SUSPENSIONS AND SETUPS ARE IDENTICAL. GM SHOULD FIX ANY IMPALA EXPERIENCE THE ALIGNMENT ISSUES BECAUSE THEY WERE NEVER RIGHT TO BEGIN WITH. *TR
