"Air Bag Malfunction light is on. There is a NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V507000 (Air Bags, Electrical System) which I am associating with the failure and it tends to happen at the 80,000 mile mark which this car is almost at. Why isn't this VIN included in the recall? It's a 2009 Chevy Impala. Shouldn't this recall capture all of the 2009 Chevy Impalas?

The service airbag light comes on in the dash. Whether someone is in the passenger seat or not, the light came one and it stays on most of the time. I looked up recalls for my vin, and it wasn’t included in the previous recall. (recall number 36110 passenger presence sensor and instrument cluster) But it has the same issue as all of the other 2009 Chevrolet Impalas recalled for the same exact thing. I purchased this car in December 2020 from the state of Michigan so I am the second owner. My vin should be covered under the recall. I need it fixed and it’s no okay that as dealership won’t cover my vehicle and it has the same issue. Why didn’t Chevrolet just recall ALL of this year, regardless of vin? GM saving money at the cost of mine and my families safety is not okay!

B001B PASSENGER PRETENSIONER DEPLOYMENT LOOP 2 HIGH RESISTANCE IT APPEARS SOME 2009 IMPALAS WERE RECALLED REGARDING THE SIDE PASSENGER AIRBAG WIRING AND THIS ONE MAY BE RELATED.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. ON THE HWY GOING 60MPH, ALL OF A SUDDEN MY ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED AND AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. THE NEXT DAY THE AIR BAG LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT ARE BOTH ON. I DID, ONLY TO FIND OUT THE RECALL IS CLOSED AND I CAN'T GET THIS FIXED UNLESS I COME UP WITH A LOT OF MONEY. I EXPLAINED I NEVER GOT ANYTHING FROM THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT THE RECALL. I AM ATTACHING A PHOTO OF THE DAMAGE FROM HITTING A DEER THAT DID NOT DEPLOY AIRBAGS ON OUR PREVIOUS 2009 WAS TOTALED. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR THE LAST RECALL FOR THE PASSANGER AIR BAG SENSOR IT DID NOT TURN THE LIGHT OFF AND THE DEALER SAYS THER IS A DIFFERANT ISSUE WITH IT AND THAT'S WHY THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. I COULDN'T TELL YOU WHAT THEY DID AS FAR AS TAPING THE WIRES OR REPLACING THE SENSOR. BUT I FEEL LIKE THEY DID NOTHING NOW THEY TELL ME THE PART IS 433.00 AND LABOR AND PROGRAMING IS ALMOST 1000.00. I SEE MANY CARS HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE PASSANGER PRESENCE SENSOR MODULE. THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON KEEPS ME FROM GETTING THE CAR INSPECTED. THEY REWRAPPED THE WIRES UNDER PASSENGER SEAT AND SYSTEM WAS OK FOR AROUND 6 MONTHS THEN IT STARTED DOING THE SAME THINGS WITH SAME ISSUE. STATING TO SERVICE AIR BAG AND WHEN IN PASSENGER SEAT IS THE ONLY TIME IT SAYS THIS AND IT ALSO DISPLAYS THAT THE PASSENGER AIR BAG IS OFF.

SEPARATELY, THE STEERING WHEEL IS INCREDIBLY STIFF WHEN STARTING THE CAR, AND WHILE MAKING TURNS. NEED BOTH ARMS TO FORCE THE CAR TO TURN. THERE IS NO ISSUE WITH POWER STEERING FLUID. THE STEERING LOOSENS A SMALL AMOUNT WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE ON THE GAS.

AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC COULD NOT DIAGNOSE IT AND THE DEALERSHIP ATTEMPTED TO DIAGNOSE IT AND ALL HE SAID WAS I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY AIR BAGS WHICH WOULD HAVE COST ROUGHLY $3400.00. IN ADDITION TO THAT, MY ABS INDICATOR BEGAN GOING ON AND OFF AND HAS CAUSED MY CAR TO FEEL AS IF IT WAS ON A HYDROPLANE MODE. WHEN IT TURNS ON IT OCCASIONALLY MAKES MY CAR JERK ON THE ROAD. I WENT TO AN AUTO SUPPLY STORE FOR DIAGNOSIS AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO READING SO NOTHING WAS WRONG, DEALERSHIP SAID THE SAME. THE LIGHT SHUT OFF AND IT WAS LIKE DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN. ALSO, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE DOOR ACTUATORS AT LEAST ONE TO TWO TIMES A YEAR BECAUSE THEY CONTINUE TO BREAK. FINALLY, MY NEW BATTERIES THE LAST FEW OF YEARS HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY DRAINED FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND I HAD TO REPLACE IT SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO DAMAGED BATTERIES EVEN THOUGH I REPLACE IT WITH BRAND NEW CAR BATTERIES.

AT AROUND 140,000 MILES I NOTICED MY SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT COMING ON AND OFF. OVERTIME IT CONTINUED TURNING ON AND OFF STAYING ON MORE FREQUENT THAN BEING OFF. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A RECALL THAT AFFECTED THE AIRBAGS. THEY TOLD ME THEY JUST HAD TO WRAP SOME WIRES THAT GO UNDERNEATH THE SEAT AND THAT WAS IT. HOWEVER THIS DID NOT TURN MY AIRBAG LIGHT OFF AND I HAVE GOTTEN NO HELP FROM ANY DEALERSHIP OR ONLINE FORUMS. I BELIEVE CHEVY SHOULD RECALL THIS AS MANY OTHER INDIVIDUALS WITH IMPALAS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. AS TO THE SEAT PROBLEM. WHERE MY SEAT COMES TOGETHER AT THE LOW BACK, IT SHIFTS AND MOVES AROUND. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD FIX IT AT $900. WE WERE EVEN TOLD THAT OUR RENTAL CAR WOULD BE PAID FOR BUT ONCE THEY TOWED THE CAR FROM OUR MECHANIC TO THEIR SHOP, THEY TOLD US THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT, ALTHOUGH DIDN'T COMMUNICATE THAT TO US UNTIL OVER A MONTH HAD GONE BY. SUBSEQUENTLY, AUTONATION TOWED MY CAR BACK TO MY MECHANIC BUT WITH EVEN MORE DAMAGE THAN THEY THEMSELVES STATED HAD BEEN THE SITUATION WITH MY CAR. THEIR OWN MECHANIC STATED BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING (IN THE WORK ORDER) THAT THE RECALLED WIRES SHORTED CAUSING THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR. NO ONE WILL TELL US WHY THAT CHANGED ONCE OUR CAR WAS TOWED TO THEM AS WE WOULD NEVER HAVE TOWED IT TO THEM IF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE CASE. ADDITIONALLY, NO ONE HAS TOLD US WHY OR WHO THE SOMEONE IS WHO DISAGREED WITH THEIR OWN MECHANIC (AND 3 ADDITIONAL MECHANICS SUBSEQUENTLY) AND MADE THE DETERMINATION THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SHORT AND RELATED DAMAGES. THE AIR BAG LIGHT FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO RIVER REST AUTO ON 4/27/2015. THEY REPLACED THE PASSENGER PRESENCE SYSTEM IN THE SEAT WHICH IS WHAT THE CODE CALLED OUT FOR. THE COST WAS 802.05. GM HAD RECALL 36110 FOR THIS PROBLEM IN 08/2016. THEY ARE ONLY WILLING TO PAY 115.96. I THINK THEY OWE ME THE TOTAL AMOUNT. WHEN I READ RECALL ONLINE, IT CLEARLY STATES THE WIRES SHOULD BE INSPECTED BEFORE APPLYING THE TAPE AND IF NOT WIRING SHOULD BE REPLACED FOR NO CHARGE. ONCE THERE I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER RECALL AND THEY WOULD FIX BOTH. I ASKED ABOUT THE LIGHT BUT WAS BLOWN OFF. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AND I LEFT WITH THE LIGHT OFF. THE NEXT DAY THE LIGHT CAME ON BUT WHEN I SHUT OFF THE CAR IT WOULD GO AWAY. THIS HAS KEPT HAPPENING BUT SINCE YESTERDAY IT IS CONSTANT. I CALLED THE DEALER AND GM AND BOTH SAY THEY ISSUES ARE NOT RELATED. BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE ON LINE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE SECOND RECALL WAS FOR A PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONS AND LOSS OF AIR BAGS! GM IS VERY BLAISE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS SAFETY. THIS IS ANOTHER ISSUE IN A LONG LIST OF PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH THE IMPALA. TWO OUT OF FOUR DOOR LOCKS DO NOT WORK UNLESS YOU MANUALLY OPEN THEM, ONE OF MY SEAT WARMERS DOES NOT FUNCTION, ETC... THIS SEEMS TO BE THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM REPORTED IN THE RECALL FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT. AT THE DEALERSHIP,THE CAR COMPUTER VERIFIED THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK THE CARE IN FOR THE RECALL, THEY CHECKED THE PASSENGER SEAT WIRING UNDER WARRANTY BUT CHARGED ME $130.12 TO GET THE DRIVER'S SEAT WIRING FIXED. IT STARTED OFF WITH THE LIGHT JUST TURNING ON WHEN I HIT A BUMP OR A ROUGH ROAD BUT NOW EVEN ON THE HIGHWAY IT COMES ON. GM CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME THAT AN AIR BAG ISSUES IS THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY AFTER MY WARRANTY IS UP HOWEVER THE AIR BAG HAS NEVER DEPLOYED OR THE CAR HAS NEVER GOTTEN INTO AN ACCIDENT SO I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHY IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR OF SUCH AN INTEGRAL SAFETY PART OF THE VEHICLE WHICH SHOULD LAST AND FUNCTION WITHOUT ISSUES FOR AT LEAST A LITTLE WHILE IF NOT FOR A LONG TIME AFTER THE INITIAL WARRANTY IS UP. WITH ALL THE CURRENT RECALLS FOR THE TAKADE AIR BAGS, WHY ARE THESE AIR BAG DEFECTS ON THE CHEVOLET IMPALA'S NOT BEING RECALLED. THEY PRESENT A REAL DANGER TO PASSENGERS IN THESE CARS. IN SOME OF THE COMPLAINTS ONLINE, EVEN AFTER THE CARS WERE SERVICED BY THE DEALERS, THE PROBLEMS REOCCURED. I BELIEVE THAT GM SHOULD STAND BEHIND THESE SAFETY MECHANISMS REGARDLESS OF ANY WARRANTY. I WAS TOLD THAT IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THE AIRBAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY IF THE WARNING LIGHT IS ON, YET I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO PAY FOR A PROBLEM WITH A SAFETY DEVICE INTENDED TO LAST THE LIFETIME OF THE CAR. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CALLED AND SAID THE "SEAT BELT TENSIONER BRACKET WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED REPLACE" THEY ALSO STATED THEY HAD NO OF KNOWING IF THE AIR BAGS OR SEAT BELTS WOULD DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT WITHOUT REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT TENSIONER BRACKET. IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT IF THIS SITUATION IS TRUE (SAFETY RESTRAINT SYSTEM CAN BE RENDERED INEFFECTIVE WITHOUT NOTICE) THAT POSSIBLY THE SITUATION SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO. 2009 CHEVY IMPALA 2LT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT HAS ILLUMINATED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS SINCE BUYING THE CAR NEW IN JANUARY 2010. CURRENTLY THE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR 2 WEEKS STRAIGHT WITH YET ANOTHER DEALER VISIT SCHEDULED. THIS WARNING LIGHT WHEN ILLUMINATED RENDERS THE REST OF THE ELECTRONIC DISPLAY USELESS SINCE THE "SERVICE AIRBAG" DISPLAY NEVER GOES OFF. THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM SATISFACTORILY FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS DESPITE THE MULTIPLE TIMES WE HAVE HAD IT IN FOR THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ISSUE. WE OWN THE CAR LISTED ABOVE AND HAVE FOR OVER TWO YEARS. WE BOUGHT IT AT A DEALERSHIP IN EAST TENNESSEE. THE CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY USED AS A RENT A CAR FOR ENTERPRISE. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR SINCE 9/2013. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT STARTED ILLUMINATING ON AND OFF. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS SERVICED. SHORTLY AFTER THAT IT CAME ON AGAIN. THEN BACK IN FEBRUARY THE CAR STARTED MAKING A VERY ANNOYING AND EMBARRASSING CLICKING SOUND THAT COMES FROM THE AC/HEATING UNIT. STOPPED AT THE TOP OF A SNOW COVERED HILL. PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN 2ND GEAR AND PROCEEDED DOWN THE HILL. THE VEHICLE GOT UP TO ABOUT 15 MPH THEN LOST ALL POWER; ENGINE QUIT, NO BRAKES, AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IN PLACE. BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING THE VEHICLE GAINED SIGNIFICANT SPEED GOING DOWNHILL. NOT BEING ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED IT WENT OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A TREE. UPON IMPACT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE'S ALSO BEEN A "LOW PRESSURE LEFT REAR TIRE." THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS FOUND TO BE LOW, BUT THE REAR TIRE WAS OK. THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED . WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GMC -BUICK DEALER WHO SAID THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH SEATBELT ANCHOR ASSEMBLY AND HAS HAD A RECALL. THEY SAID THE CAR HAD BEEN IN FOR THE RECALL ID # 89931 AND HAD BEEN CHECKED. WE DID NOT OWN THE VEHICLE AT THAT TIME. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE ON 8/ 31/11 FROM A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP. WE HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE ONLY 6 WEEKS WHEN THE PROBLEM AROSE. WE DON'T KNOW IF PROBLEM WAS EVER SOLVED OR IF THE TROUBLE WAS JUST CLEARED. THE LIGHT WAS OFF WHEN WE LEFT THE DEALERSHIP THIS TIME. WE BELIEVE IF PROBLEM WAS PROPERLY REPAIRED ON THE RECALL THERE WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. THIS DEALER (YOUNG- BUICK GMC) OF OWOSSO, MI SAID THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS $190.79. WE DON'T THINK THAT WE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS A RECALL AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXIST. EVIDENTLY THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS IT MUST OF NOT BEEN FIXED PROPERLY. *TR

DEALER FOUND AND REPAIRED THE FOLLOWING, CPA CONNECTOR TO NOT BE PROPERLY INSTALLED - R&R CONNECTOR AND INSTALLED PROPERLY, CPA CONNECTOR UNDER SEAT TO BE OUT OF PLACE - R&R CONNECTOR AND PROPERLY INSTALLED, FOUND LOOSE CPA CONNECTOR ON PASS SIDE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER - R&R CONNECTOR AND ADD DIELECTRIC, REINSTALL CONNECTOR AND CPA PROPERLY, FOUND PROGRAM UPDATE FOR RELATED COMPLAINT, PERFORMED PROGRAM UPDATE ON SDM AND RESET. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT WAS SITTING IDLE AT A TRAFFIC STOP WHEN A VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR OF THE CONTACTS VEHICLE. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE IMPACT CAUSED THE WINDOW GLASS TO SHATTER AND THE CONTACT SUSTAINED LACERATIONS TO THE MOUTH AND LEFT ARM. HIS NECK AND SHOULDERS WERE ALSO INJURED AND THE CONTACT WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL VIA AMBULANCE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A COLLISION FACILITY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 59,000.

HE STATES THAT THE 3 OF THE 4 DOOR ACTUATORS WERE BROKEN. *KB THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT HAD A PROBLEM WITH A FLASHING RED LIGHT IF A PENCIL OR PIECE PAPER WAS PLACED IN THE SEAT. *JB

TL*THE CONTACT RENTED A 2009 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO HER AND NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE SEAT BELTS ALSO DID NOT SECURELY HOLD ANY OF THE PASSENGERS. THE POLICE APPEARED ON THE SCENE AND 4 MAJOR INJURIES WERE REPORTED. ALL 4 PASSENGERS WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL TO HAVE THEIR INJURIES TREATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. SHE WAS NOT SURE IF THE VEHICLE WAS EVER EXAMINED FOR THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 12,000.

WE PURCHASED A 2009 CHEVY IMPALA IN APRIL . MY WIFE HAS A TAIL BONE MEDICAL ISSUE THAT NECESSITATES THAT SHE SIT ON A SPECIAL PILLOW WHILE RIDING IN A VEHICLE. THE SEAT DISPLACES HER WEIGHT EVENLY ACROSS THE SEAT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE AIR BAG SENSOR ON THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE HER WEIGHT SITTING ON THE SEAT, SO THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG DOESN'T SHOW IT IS OPERATIVE. WE RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD US TO SET A MAGAZINE UNDERNEATH HER TO MAKE THE SENSOR WORK. IT DOES ACTIVATE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG "ON" BUTTON SOMETIMES, HOWEVER, THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME IT WILL NOT ACTIVATE AND MY WIFE IS NOT PROTECTED. I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY SOLUTION TO THIS SAFETY ISSUE, EXCEPT TO TELL ME THAT MY WIFE SHOULD RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT! THE DEALERSHIP HAS NO FURTHER ANSWERS FOR US. WE ARE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED THAT MY WIFE IS RIDING IN A BRAND NEW VEHICLE UNPROTECTED BY HER AIRBAG NEARLY ALL THE TIME. CAN YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE? THANK YOU! *TR
