The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked under a carport in her driveway, she had been warned by neighbors that the rear end of the vehicle was on fire. The contact stated that she saw that flames were issuing from both rear light housings. The contact stated that by the time her husband and a neighbor attempted to extinguish the flames with garden hoses, the light housings and the rear bumper were on fire and melting. The fire department and the police were called. The contact stated that by the time emergency services arrived, the flames had been extinguished. The contact stated that the fire department opened the trunk, and the interior of the trunk and the matting were not damaged. The only damage was to the rear light housings and the rear bumper. The fire department had not issued a report, however the police had. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

Headlight wiring harness connector has melted multiple times leaving me without low beam headlights while driving at night with my children in the car. This has left me having to use my high beams to drive and this poses as a safety hazard for not only me and my family but other people on the road. This also poses a fire hazard if the plastic connector is getting hot enoughto melt. I have requested warranty replacements for this part through AC Delco and made them aware of the on going problem and informed them that this is a well known issue with this car and that it is extremely dangerous. I have not had the part inspected by a mechanic, insurance company or law enforcement but have the failed part and would be willing to have it inspected by law enforcement or anyone else but can not afford out of pocket expenses to do so. There was no prior warning to this happening any of the times it happened it would be working when I left my house I would stop somewhere turn the car off and when I got back in and started the car they wouldn't turn on. Another time they quit working while driving down the road. The date below is the date that I ordered the first replacement wiring harness it lasted less than 3 months and i had to have it replaced and currently I am dealing with not having low beams again this is the 3rd time I have dealt with this issue and it has been on going since January 2025.
Two months ago While driving on the highway at 60 mph at night my headlights shut off with no warning leaving only my running lights, turn signals, brake lights and hazards lights functioning. Neither hi or low beams would function. Yet no warning or service lights appeared on the dash. Local mechanic replaced both the headlights bulbs and connectors on both sides. 3 weeks later it happened again, this time when I started my car the headlights failed to turn on. So i contacted a local Chevy dealer (Rob Eck chevy) who said there was no recall or investigation...so I took it back the mechanic and had him fix it AGAIN. Just a few minutes ago today when I went to go to work yet AGAIN the headlights won't turn on. Checked through a plethora of forums about the Malibu both fan sites and manufacturers sites and have found that this is an extremely common issue for 2008-2014 Malibus, As this is an extremely dangerous failure/malfunction for both the driver and everyone else on the road I am STUNNED that there's no recall or at least an INVESTIGATION into this as with this many occurrences with so many owners it's virtually impossible to be owner fault ergo it must be a product defect or a manufacturer defect....please do what's right for the safety and well being of others not what's right to protect the rich lining their pockets
I'm having to replace the low beam headlight in my car more times than a lil bit! I hate that I'm constantly spending $60+ everytime on headlights cause of i replace one side imma replace the other! I have brought the replacement harness for the lights and the low beam still blows!
Passenger headlight keeps going out. Have had to replace 4 times in 3 years. Difficult taking off entire bumper

I purchased this 2011 Cheverolet Malibu brand new. A few years prior to me giving it to my daughter, I had to get the headlights replaced several times, one would go out a month or so after I had the other one fixed. I gave it to her in 2019 and lately every other week one or even BOTH of the front headlights have gone out. Also, the third brake lamp randomly goes out and now one of the rear brake lamps has gone out. There’s already over 100 complaints about these issues with this particular model but GM has yet to do a recall! WHY?? It’s clearly an issue with the vehicle and the fact that the ENTIRE front bumper has to come off to get to it is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen!!! Headlights, of all things, randomly going out on a vehicle is not safe at all! There are people out here who have children in these faulty vehicles and clearly neither GM nor the NHTSA cares. What is it going to take for someone to do something about this, deaths???
Driverside Airbag light will come on with Service Airbag message. This does occasionally turn off but comes back for days or weeks at a time. Driver side seatbelt light will randomly come on and stay on or turn off. Both airbag and seatbelt light may be on at the same time. If they are all off or the airbag light turns off it's only for a day or two. Most of the time it will be the airbag light only that is on and tends to stay on longer than seatbelt light.

The vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V252000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting, Vehicle Speed Control, Electronic Stability Control). The contact stated that on various occasions while driving at various speeds, the traction control and power steering disengaged independently as the "Reduced Engine Power" warning message was displayed and the vehicle decelerated to 10 MPH. The contact also stated that the brake lights flickered intermittently without depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the intake camshaft actuator, mass air flow, and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

Headlights fail. I have had to replace my headlights several times. I have also had to replace the entire headlight assembly.
4/16/2018) Codes pulled 16188 Brake Lamp Malfunction, 13036D, and 13036C. Code 16188 was repaired and replaced by the Chevrolet dealership. A warning code would show on the dashboard then brake lights would show that the brakes are being applied at all times while driving or not show when braking.
The headlights have went out over 10 times. The wiring keeps burning. This is a known issues. Why is there not a recall? It’s extremely expensive and hard to get the front end of the car off to replace the bulb to find out it’s not the bulb. It goes out every few months. Even the dealership service department has told me it’s a known issue!

THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ON MY VEHICLE BURN OUT AND NEED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 3-4 MONTHS (3-4 TIMES PER YEAR FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE). THIS IS NOT ONLY AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR (BECAUSE MY MECHANIC NEEDS TO REMOVE THE BUMPER IN ORDER TO COMPLETE IT), BUT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. MULTIPLE TIMES MY HEADLIGHTS HAVE SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING AT NIGHT WITHOUT WARNING. SOMETIMES PULLING OVER AND HITTING THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY WILL CAUSE IT TO HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION AGAIN, CAUSING THE LIGHTS TO WORK, BUT THIS FIX IS ONLY TEMPORARY. THE CONNECTORS KEEP MELTING, MY MECHANIC AND I NOW BELIEVE, DUE TO THE HIGH AMPERAGE CAUSED BY THE 70% REDUCTION IN POWER DURING THE VEHICLE'S DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT MODE. MY COMPLAINTS TO THE MANUFACTURER HAVE GONE UNHEARD. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO PROVIDE FOR A HEAVIER CONNECTOR THAN THE OEM PART, AND PERHAPS DIFFERENT BULBS, TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY ISSUE. IN THE YEAR 2020 IT SHOULD NOT BE SO DIFFICULT TO KEEP BOTH LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS RUNNING! I CAN GET AROUND THE ISSUE BY USING MY HIGH BEAM LIGHTS, BUT THIS IS HAZARDOUS TO OTHER MOTORISTS. MY MOTHER"S 2011 CHEVY MALIBU LTZ HAS HAD A RECURRING PROBLEM CONCERNING DASH LIGHTS. IT IS QUITE COMMON FOR US TO BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, THERE ARE NO LIGHTS WITHIN THE GAUGE PANEL OR STEREO FACE PANEL. SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS WILL ONLY DIM, OTHERS THEY GO OUT COMPLETELY. ON OTHER OCCASIONS THE LIGHTS DON'T COME ON AT START-UP AND MAY TURN ON AT SOME POINT, 10-15 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD. WE'VE CALLED THE DEALER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED FROM, STARLING CHEVROLET-CADILLAC TO REPORT THESE ISSUES, ONLY BE TOLD TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN "WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING", BY THE TIME WE WOULD GET HALF WAY THERE, THE PROBLEM STOPPED AND THE SERVICE WRITER SAYS COME BACK WHEN IT'S HAPPENING. WE'VE WONDERED IF THIS COULD BE RELATED TO THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES FOR WHICH CHEVROLET SENT OUT THE EXTENSION OF THE WARRANTY TO 15 YEARS OR 120,000 MILES. ANOTHER ISSUE WE'VE HAD RELATES TO THE OLDER POWER STEERING RECALL. WE'VE HAD THE CAR IN TO STARLING CHEVROLET TWICE THAT THEY HAVE REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PUMP. THE PROBLEM I HAVE CONCERNS THE UN PROFESSIONAL WORK OF THE MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED THE SERVICE. WHILE HAVING TIRES REPLACED A COUPLE OF MONTHS AFTER THE POWER STEERING REPLACEMENT, WE WERE SHOWN THE WAY THE STARLING CHEVROLET MECHANIC HAD BEAT THE DEVIL OUT OF THE CARS' UNDER CARRIAGE. IT'S ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVABLE FOR A CHEVY DEALER TO CAUSE THIS KIND OF DAMAGE WHILE PERFORMING A RECALL SERVICE!!! FINALLY, IS THE FIRST PROBLEM WE INCURRED WITH STARLING. DURING THE ORIGINAL TEST DRIVE, THE DEALER'S SALESMAN PROCEEDED TO TOSS A DRIVE-OUT TAG IN THE REAR OF THE CAR DURING WHICH THEY DAMAGED THE PAINT. MY BROTHER TRIED TO STOP THE SALESMAN FROM USING THIS TAG HANGER WHEN HE SAW THE UNGUARDED MAGNET HANGER, BUT THE DEALER REP WOULDN'T LISTEN. IT TOOKY A MONTH TO GET THE PAINT FIXED AND ONLY THEN AFTER MR. STARLING GOT INVOLVED. THE DEALER CHANGED HANGERS AS A RESULT!
I HAVE GOTTEN MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS CHANGED ON BOTH SIDES TWICE, COSTING ME $150 EACH TIME DUE TO HAVING TO REMOVE THE BUMPER, AND THEY KEEP GOING OUT!!! I WORK AT NIGHT IN AN AREA HEAVILY POPULATED WITH DEER, AMONG OTHER ISSUES WITH JUST NEEDING TO HAVE MY HEADLIGHTS WORKING REGULARLY. I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO KEEP REPLACING THEM! AND I JUST GOT IT IN OCTOBER.

FOR OVER A YEAR I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY PASSENGERS SIDE LOW BEAM LIGHT GOING OUT. THE ISSUE IS NOT WITH THE LIGHTBULB BUT THE ACTUAL HARNESS AND PIG TAIL. AFTER THREE MECHANICS AND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS (THIS IS NOT ANY EASY FIX DUE TO THE BUMPER HAVING TO BE REMOVED EVERY TIME THIS HAPPENS) NOT TO MENTION THE COST OF PARTS AND LABOR, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH. IT APPEARS THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. IT HAS BEEN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS SINCE I HAVE HAD IT REPLACED AND IT HAS BURNT UP AGAIN. I FEEL CHEVROLET SHOULD BE ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE AND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

RIGHT FRONT LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT KEEPS GOING OUT. HARNESS AND BULB HAS BEEN CHANGED. SAME HAS HAPPENED 3TIMES. SAFETY CONCERN!!! LAST CHEVROLET FOR ME!!! THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES THIS YEAR. GETTING EXPENSIVE!!!!

WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD CONSTANTLY COME ON AND GO OFF BUT NOW THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. I JUST RECENTLY STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE AIRBAGS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE NOT BEING ENGAGED AND THE ENGINE ESC COMES ON WHENEVER IT PLEASES, EVEN WHEN THE WEATHER IS GOOD OUTSIDE. LAST WEEKEND, MY BATTERY DIED FOR THE FIRST TIME, I'M JUST GLAD THAT I HAD SOMEONE TO JUMP ME OFF. MY PRIMARY CONCERN IS MY HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE GOTTEN PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE 3 TIMES DUE TO MY INTERMITTENT HEADLIGHTS. THE FIRST TIME MY RIGHT SIDE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT, A OFFICER PULLED ME OVER AND INFORMED ME OF THE ISSUE, SO I GOT IT FIXED THE VERY NEXT DAY. A WEEK GOES BY AND I GET PULLED OVER AGAIN AND THE OFFICER INFORMED ME BUT THIS TIME I INFORMED THE OFFICER THAT I JUST CHANGED THE BULB A WEEK AGO AND HE MENTIONED THAT IT COULD BE THE WIRING. AFTER THE OFFICER LEFT, I GOT OUT MY CAR AND HIT THE HEADLIGHT WITH MY FIST AND IT CAME BACK ON JUST TO GO BACK OUT THE NEXT DAY. I WENT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE CHANGED THE LIGHT BULB SOCKET. THAT ONLY LASTED 3 OR 4 WEEKS AND NOW I LITERALLY HAVE TO RIDE WITH MY HEADLIGHTS ON BRIGHT OR CAN'T BE OUT AT NIGHT. AFTER GOING TO MULTIPLE AUTO SHOPS, THEY ALL SAYS THAT IT'S THE WIRING, WHICH I ALREADY KNEW BECAUSE THE GAGES ON MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP LIKE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS EVERY OTHER DAY.
IN THE PAST FEW YEARS MY HEADLIGHT KEEPS GOING OUT. I REPLACE THE BULB AND LIKE A MONTH LATER IT GOES OUT AGAIN. WENT TO REPLACE AGAIN AND BULB WAS FINE BUT BAD WIRING. FIXED THAT AND TODAY NOW BOTH HEADLIGHTS ARE OUT. I JUST REPLACED THEM IN THE SUMMER NOT SURE HOW THEY CAN BE OUT AGAIN! IT IS NOT AN EASY PROCESS TO GET TO THESE LIGHTS MAKING IT A LOT OF WORK AND MONEY IF I DONT DO IT MYSELF WHICH NOW THAT ITS NEGATIVE OUT I WILL BE PAYING TO GET THIS FIXED YET AGAIN. I WAS JUST LEAVING THE GROCERY STORE TURNED THEM ON AND THEY WERE NOT WORKING.

EVEN AFTER THE BULB IS CHANGED, IT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO GO OUT AGAIN AS QUICKLY AS HOURS LATER. THIS CREATES UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS AS OFTEN TIMES THE OUTAGES OCCUR SPONTANEOUSLY, AT NIGHT, AND ON DARK ROADWAYS. IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DANGEROUS AND FINANCIALLY TAXING TO OWN AND OPERATE THIS VEHICLE DUE TO THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS.

I TOOK IT APART AND FOUND THAT THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR WAS BROKEN AND SHORTED OUT, SO I ORDERED A NEW WIRING HARNESS THAT GOES FROM THE GROUND WIRE SPLIT TO THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY, PUT IT TOGETHER AND IT WORKED FINE FOR 2 DAYS AND WENT OUT AGAIN. I TOOK THE FRONT END OFF AGIAN AND UNPLUGGED THE BULB AND PLUGGED IT BACK IN AND IT WORKS FINE AGAIN. I HAVE CHECKED ALL THE WIRES AND THE GROUND SCREW AND CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM.
THE PASSENGER SIDE HEAD LAMP IS CONSTANTLY IN NEED OF REPAIR. AFTER REPLACING THE DIM BULB SEVERAL TIMES, I HAD THE WIRING REPLACED TO FIX IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE FAULTY LIGHTING. THIS STILL DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THE R.H. PASSENGER DIM LAMP IS OUT AGAIN. THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR ALL 2009 - 2011 CHEVY MALIBU VEHICLES. THE LIGHTING, ONCE REPLACED, WORKED FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THEN IT GOES OUT. I AM AT THE POINT OF REPLACING THE HEAD LAMP ASSEMBLY WHICH IS PRICEY. THE REPAIRS WERE DONE SEVERAL TIMES BEGINNING IN 2018.

I'VE READ A LOT OF POSTS ABOUT PEOPLE DEALING WITH ISSUES WITH THE POWER GOING SPECIFICALLY TO HEADLIGHTS, AS IN IT IS TOO MUCH VOLTAGE AND THAT IS CAUSING THE LIGHT TO GO OUT.

I BELIEVE THIS IS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAD TO REPLACE THE CONNECTORS. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AND THAT IT CAN BE A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM. CHEVROLET SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THESE FAULTY CONNECTORS.

ADDITIONALLY A HEADLIGHT OUT IS SUFFICIENT REASON FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ISSUE A SUMMONS. I CONTACTED GENERAL MOTORS MAY 20TH 2019 VIA PHONE REGARDING THIS SAFETY ISSUE. RECEIVED A CASE NUMBER. I RECEIVED A CALL BACK 6 DAYS LATER. RESPONSE WAS THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I DID INFORM GM THAT THERE ARE LITERALLY OVER 300 LISTINGS ON GOOGLE FOR PERSONS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. GM SHOWS NO INTEREST IN THIS EXPENSIVE REPAIR, IN A REPETITIVE PROBLEM, AND AN ILLEGAL SITUATION THAT CAN RESULT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUING A SUMMONS. APPARENTLY THERE ARE ISSUES WITH THE CONNECTORS AT THE BULBS NOT MAKING CONTACT. THE REPLACED CONNECTORS EXHIBIT OVERHEATING WHICH MAY INDICATE OVERLOAD OF POWER, OR CONNECTORS NOT MAKING CONTACT. THIS PROBLEM TOOK PLACE WITH ORIGINAL GM CONNECTORS INTERMITTENTLY - NEVER ON BOTH HEADLIGHTS AT ONCE. HERE IS A SIMILAR COMPLAINT TO NHTSA ID NUMBER 11204441 4/12/2017 COMPLAINANT STATES 5 REPAIRS AND STILL A PROBLEM WITH HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENTLY GOING OUT ON DRIVER SIDE. ADDITIONALLY THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB REGARDING 2010 & 2011 MALIBU'S. BECAUSE THE FENDERS AND UNDER THE HOOD PLASTIC PANELS MUST BE PULLED TO GET AT THE HEADLIGHTS....THIS IS QUITE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR AND IS REPETITIVE AND FREQUENT AS WELL.

I CHANGED OUT BOTH DUE TO THE FACT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE/PARTIAL REMOVE THE BUMPER IN ORDER TO WORK ON THE HEADLIGHTS. THE HEADLIGHTS WILL WORK FOR A WHILE THEN STOP AGAIN USUALLY ONLY ONE SIDE AT A TIME. I WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND WHO ALSO HAD THE SAME ISSUE ON A 2012 THAT IT MAY BE THE AUTO LIGHT STAYING ON AND THE CIRCUIT MAY BE OVERHEATING. NOT SURE IF THIS IS ACCURATE BUT IT SOUNDS LOGICAL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 4 YEARS NOW WITH THIS MONTH BEING THE MOST RECENT AFTER ABOUT 6 MONTHS SINCE REPLACING WIRES AND I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY KNOW RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. MANY PEOPLE CANNOT WAIT THE 2 DAYS WAIT AND THE EXORBITANT COST FOR THIS OBVIOUSLY SIMPLE PROCEDURE THAT THREATENS DRIVING SAFETY WITH ONLY ONE WORKING HEADLIGHT.

AT RANDOM WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE RADIO WILL SWITCH TO AUX. YOU CAN TOUCH THE DASH ON THE SIDE OR AROUND THE RADIO AND IT WILL GO BACK TO RADIO. IT WILL ALSO SWITCH SOMETIMES WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, OR TURN ON WINDSHIELD WIPERS. YOU HAVE TO BUMP THE SIDE OF THE DASH OR THE AREA AROUND THE RADIO FOR IT TO SWITCH BACK ALSO THERE IS A NOISE WHERE THE STEERING IS THAT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS KNOCKING AROUND UNDER THE CAR, AND MY DASH LIGHTS SOMETIMES WILL WAIT UNTIL I HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL BLOCKS BEFORE THEY COME ON. THE RATTLING OR KNOCKING NOISE THAT IS HEARD IN THE FRONT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REALLY BOTHERS ME THAT SOMETHING IS READY TO FALL OFF OR BREAK. IN OCTOBER OF 2012 I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE TURN SIGNAL LAMPS ON THE DRIVER SIDE REAR I WOULDN'T THINK THEY SHOULD GO OUT THAT QUICK. *TR
