The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the air bag warning illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed and DTC: B101D – (Air bag module failure) was retrieved. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 142,000.

The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in the garage after two weeks, he started the vehicle and reversed onto the driveway. The driver's side and passenger's side air bags deployed without impact or warning. There were no reported injuries. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.

Air bag warning light stays on and will not reset. Driver power seat controls buttons out of plastic control cover and jammed in metal part of seat. Can not get seat control unjammed and no way to adjust driver seat.
The airbag maintenace light comes on every time I start it. Alot of my friends who own GMC say that it is a normal problem with a GMC vehicle and there should be a recall on it. But there is none.
After my car battery was professionally replaced my airbag light came on. GM dealer service got a code of B101D requiring the airbag control module to be replaced. There are no new compatible modules available in the US. Two GM dealers advised getting a used module that had not been in an airbag deployment. Upon obtaining a compatible module the dealer is now getting a code of B3902, this code indicates that the environment identifier of the module does not match the vehicle and prohibits further programming permitting the airbags to function properly. So GM has intentionally prohibited compatible modules from salvage cars and they are no longer making new modules for my car. How is this ethical, legal, safe or environmentally sound? Are consumers expected to junk a perfectly good automobile absent a $100 part? Is this practice required by some regulation prohibiting airbag modules from being salvaged and reprogrammed?
MY CAR FAILED INSPECTION BECAUSE OF "SERVICE AIRBAG" LIGHT DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD.
MY CAR WAS RUNNING IN THE DRIVE WHEN IT DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. EVERYTHING WENT DEAD. I HAD TO JUMP START IT AND AFTER THAT THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT WITH THIS LIGHT ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO A CHEVY DEALER WHERE I WAS CHARGED $80.00 TO BE TOLD THAT THE SDM AIRBAG MODULE NEEDS REPLACED AND ESTIMATED COST FOR THIS IS $1100.00. MY CAR ONLY HAS 108232 MILES ON IT AND TO KNOW THAT IT COULD COST ME EITHER MY FAMILIES LIFE OR $1100.00 EVERYTIME THE BATTERY DIES IS NOT A CHOICE ANYONE SHOULD HAVE TO MAKE. AIRBAGS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE MOST DEPENDABLE PART OF A VEHICLE AS IT SAVES SO MANY LIVES. HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY ARE EVEN WORKING WITH THE LIGHT OFF IF IT IS THIS SENSITIVE? I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE EVEN IF I GET IT FIXED AND SINCE I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR RECENTLY I OWE TO MUCH TO TRY TO BUY ANYTHING ELSE. HOW CAN PART OF THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT FAIL SO EASILY AND NOT BE ON RECALL? WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF IT HAD DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD INSTEAD OF IN THE DRIVEWAY PUTTING THE CAR INTO GEAR? THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR HAS GONE BAD MAKING IT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITH A PASSENGER IN MY VEHICLE BECAUSE ANYTHING ELECTRONIC ON THE DASH WILL TURN OFF, AS WELL AS THE A/C AND RADIO ETC. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD. I'VE SEEM NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AIRBAG SENSOR ISSUES YET EVERYTIME I'VE CHECKED, THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN APRIL.2020, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WILL NOT TURN OFF. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND THE PUT IT ON A MACHINE TO CHECK AND SEE IF IT NEEDED TO BE RESET. THEY TOLD ME AT THAT TIME THE 2013 MALIBU HAD A RECALL ON OVER HALF OF THE MALIBU AIRBAGS FROM THE SAME YEAR. THEY CAN FIX IT. AND FOR ME TO KEEP CHECKING FOR MY VIN TO SHOW UP ON THE RECALL LIST. AT THAT MOMENT I REALLY DIDN'T KNOW A LOT ABOUT CARS AND THE SALES PERSON TOLD ME THEY FIXED MY ISSUE AND THAT I SHOULD BE FINE WITH THE VEHICLE. I CAN GET MY ENGINE LIGHT TAKEN CARE OF SINCE IT WAS MY FAULT, BUT I SEE SO MANY RECALLS OUT ON THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE FOR THE AIRBAG AND THERE IS NONE FOR MINE. TAKATA RECALL I HAVE A 2013 CHEVY MALIBU ECO WITH ROUGHLY 89K MILES. MY 'SERVICE AIRBAG' LIGHT CAME ON RANDOMLY AS I WAS PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY ON JULY 27, 2019. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT IN MY CAR, AND I THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER SEEN THIS LIGHT. I REMEMBER A FEW YEARS BACK, I RECEIVED A NOTICE IN THE MAIL FROM THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT A RECALL ON AIRBAGS (SOMETHING RELATED TO THE DEPLOYMENT) AND I WENT AND GOT IT SERVICED. WELL IT'S 2-3 YRS LATER AND MY AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. I'M CONCERNED IF THIS IS RELATED TO THE TAKATA RECALL AS WELL. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY 'SERVICE AIRBAG' LIGHT WOULD POP ON SO RANDOMLY.

WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE AT MAACO THERE WAS NO AIRBAG LIGHT. THEY WERE REPLACING THE PASSENGER DOOR AND FIXING THE BENT FOR BOTH COLLISION. WHEN I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE I NOTICED THE AIR BAG LIGHT AND I INFORMED THE MAACO REPRESENTATIVE. HE TOLD ME IT WILL GO AWAY BY ITS OWN. IT DIDN'T GO AWAY AND WE AGREED WITH THEM TO TAKE IT BACK. WHEN I FOLLOWED UP WITH THEM THEY SAID THAT THEY CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM BUT HAD CONTACTED THE INSURANCE. DAYS PASSED WITHOUT GETTING AN UPDATED. LASTLY I AM TOLD TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK WITH ME AND THAT I HAVE TO PROVE TO THE INSURANCE THAT THE LIGHT IS CAUSED BY THE OLD ACCIDENT. I FEEL IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE IT WITH THE LIGHT ON AS IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ANYONE. I DON'T HAVE TRANSPORTATION AND I AM PAYING THE INSURANCE AND THE LOAN.

THE MECHANICAL ASPECTS OF THE CAR STILL SEEM TO WORK FINE, BUT THE NOTIFICATIONS ABOUT THE AIRBAGS AND BRAKING MAKE ME CONCERNED THAT IT IS NOT SAFE. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A YEAR. I HAVE TRIED TAKING MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY EITHER CANNOT REPLICATE IT OR THEY WILL "FIX" SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T END UP SOLVING THE PROBLEM. GIVEN THAT THIS PROBLEM STARTED RANDOMLY AND NOT WITH ANY INTERVENTION ON MY PART OF THE PART OF ANY MECHANIC, I AM CONTACTING NHTSA BECAUSE I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS RELATED TO THE AIRBAG SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THAT THIS MIGHT BE HAPPENING WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND COULD REPRESENT REAL DANGER IF THIS REALLY IS AFFECTING THE AIRBAG AND BRAKING SYSTEMS (EVEN WHEN THE PASSENGER SEAT IS NOT IN USE).

THEY NOW WANT TO CHARGE OVER 1000 TO FIX SOMETHING THAT WAS DEFECT DUE TO BATTERY WAS JUMPED AND SHORTED MODULE. NOW MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE WORKING AIRBAGS AND THIS PROBLEM IS ALL OVER THE WEB IN DIFFERENT GROUPS AS A REOCCURRING PROBLEM.

I WAS IN A 2013 CHEVROLET MALIBU LS TRAVELLING AT APPROXIMATELY 15MPH, THE OTHER DRIVER IN A 2010 HONDA ACCORD TRAVELLING AT APPROXIMATELY 45-55MPH. THE COLLISION WAS BETWEEN MY FRONT LEFT AND HIS FRONT RIGHT, NO PASSENGERS. NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED FROM EITHER VEHICLE, AND AS MINE DID NOT DEPLOY, I RECEIVED A CONCUSSION WHEN THE BACK OF MY HEAD BROKE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS PART OF TAKATA, AS I CANNOT FIND THE MANUFACTURER OF MY CAR'S AIRBAGS. CHEVROLET PROVIDED NO INFORMATION AS TO THE MANUFACTURER OR WHY AT LEAST THE CURTAIN AIRBAG WOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED TO PREVENT CONCUSSION.

I HAVE HAD DEALERSHIP REPAIR THE PROBLEM TWICE, ONCE WHILE STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY AND THEN RECENTLY DUE TO AIRBAG HARNESS WIRING SHEARING OFF. THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THE WIRING AND CHARGED ME THE DEDUCTIBLE UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT ADVISED THE ISSUE COULD HAPPEN AGAIN DUE TO FAULTY DESIGN ENGINEERING. THE ISSUE HAPPENS APPARENTLY WHILE RAISING AND LOWERING THE DRIVER SEAT. THE WIRING HARNESS CAN EASILY GET CAUGHT IN THE GEAR MECHANISM.

I WAS RIDING IN THE CAR WITH MY WIFE AND COUSIN HEADING TO HER BROTHERS HOUSE. WE HAD JUST DROVE FROM OUT OF TOWN AFTER VISITING SOME FAMILY MEMBERS AND WAS TAKING MY COUSIN BACK HOME. WHILE DRIVING I NOTICE THE CAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ACTING UP IT WOULD SAY I NEEDED TO PUT AIR IN THE TIRE OR THE BACK TIRE WAS NOT FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. IT ALSO WOULD SAY I NEEDED TO PUT MY SEAT BELT ON WHEN IT WAS ON. BUT THIS WAS NOT MY BIGGEST CONCERN MY WIFE WHILE DRIVING RAN OFF THE ROAD A STRUCK A TREE HEAD ON. HAD SHE HAD BEEN DRIVING FASTER THEN WHAT SHE WAS GOING I FELL AS IF SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED. THE AIRBAGS NEVER CAME OUT AND THIS WAS A CONCERN BECAUSE WHO KNOWS HOW MANY VEHICLES ARE AFFECTED BY THIS. I THANK GOD THAT HER INJURIES WERE NOT THAT SERVE AS WELL AS MY COUSIN AND I, ALTHOUGH PAIN WILL HEAL THE PAIN OF LOSING A LOVE ONE WILL NEVER HEAL. THE HOT AIR COULD NOT BE IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF. HAPPENED ONLY ONCE. 3) PASSENGER SIDE FRONT FENDER/BUMPER LOOSE - MAKES NOISE, CAN POP IT BACK IN, BUT ON HOT DAYS, IT POPS OUT, VIBRATES AND MAKES LOUD NOISE UNTIL POPPED BACK IN. 4) REAR WINDOWS - WHEN DOWN 1/2, 3/4 OR FULLY, VIBRATES, MAKES VERY LOUD NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE TIRES ARE COMING APART, CAUSING DRIVER TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER TO CHECK TIRES, THE DISTRACTION & BEING ON SIDE OF ROAD COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. 5) NO SPARE TIRE - UNABLE TO LOCATE A TIRE & RIM (OR DONUT TIRE) FOR PURCHASE TO INSERT IN TRUNK TIRE AREA. WAITING AT A CORNER FOR A CLEAR SPOT TO CROSS FIVE LANE ROAD. WAS WATCHING A TRUCK WITH A SNOW PLOW WANTING TO TURN ONTO SAME ROAD THAT I NEEDED TO CROSS. LOOKED BOTH WAYS AND THEN BACK AT THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK DID NOT MOVE SO I PROCEEDED AND I ONLY MADE IT JUST BEYOND THE TURN LANE AND GOT HIT BY ANOTHER CAR. I TRIED AS FAST AS I COULD TO STAY IN THE TURN LANE BUT STILL GOT HIT. OTHER DRIVER DID NOT TRY TO AVOID US. WE WERE HIT HARD IN THE RIGHT FRONT OF OUR CAR. THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROAD I WANTED TO CROSS IS 55 MPH SO WE WERE HIT PRETTY HARD. NOW THIS IS WHERE WE GET MAD. FIRST NOTICED A CREASE IN REAR SEAT SIDE AIRBAGS CAUSED BY REAR DOOR PANEL RESTING ON IT RATHER THAN HAVING CLEARANCE. AFTER THE DOOR HAD BEEN OPENED/CLOSED THROUGH USE OVER A PERIOD OF ONLY 6 MONTHS, IT IS BEGINNING TO RUB A POSSIBLE HOLE IN THE MATERIAL CONTAINING THE AIRBAG. DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE AND SUBSEQUENT CHECK OF SOME NEW MALIBUS STILL ON THE LOT REVEALED THAT ALMOST ALL HAD SOME SORT OF INDICATION OF THE SAME PROBLEM.
