The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced several electrical failures, causing a loss of power and the vehicle to stall. The vehicle also lost power steering and braking functionality. While inspecting under the hood, the contact discovered that the battery terminals were extremely hot to the touch. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. While driving my 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, the electrical system intermittently fails: the radio shuts off, the instrument cluster goes blank (gauges drop to zero, fuel/temperature show empty), headlights flicker off then on, and turn-signal indicators disappear. Warning messages such as “Service Theft” and “No Key Detected” appear, power steering becomes difficult, and the vehicle shakes, stalls, or even turns off completely at stop signs. Sometimes the engine continues running even after the car is shut off, overheating and producing a burnt smell. These failures began months ago, occur unpredictably, and have been witnessed by an independent shop. The loss of lights, steering, and cluster data creates a serious safety hazard, and the vehicle is available for inspection.
my power steering intermittently 'locks"Cannnot remove key from ignition.Car loses its data memory, time &date go haywire. A lot of times car wont start.I have taken it a few times to my mechanic. He has run scans, but all the codes are clear.This is the problem.He has checked the Battery&Altenator, all fine.He tried cleaning some ground wires. He feels bad charging me money because he cant fix a problem that he doesnt see.!! When the car is in the shop,the intermittent problem is not evident.!!! Very frustrating.
While my daughter has been driving our 2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2013, the vehicle continues to experience add loss of electric power. The dashboard display and infortainment system went down black. The problem first began -2019-2020 and continues to recur about once or twice a month. The most recent incident occurred on September 18, 2025, with my daughter behind the wheel. An independentc mechanic confirmed that cause is a manufacturer's defect in the fuse box located near the battery. He stated this is a widespread issue and refused to repair it, advising Chevrolet should address it. Chevrolet Waldorf kept my car for over a month but only replaced the battery, could find the issue, which did not resolve the defect. This recurring failure creates a serious safety risk to the driver, passenger, and others on the road because the car can lose power and steering at anytime. This issue was he subject of prior NHTSA complaint I submitted in 2020 (ID 11315997), and it has continued despite the report. Everytime this defect occurs with Chevrolet Malibu 2013... my family's safety, and the safety of others on the road is placed in jeopardy. GM must be held accountable to correct this ongoing safety defect beforer more lives are placed at risk, and NHTSA's response wil demonstrate where consumer safety is being prioritized or neglected. Battery voltage going up and down. Car will make clicking sound. Car will shut off and start back up. Battery issue will pop up n steering wheel will lock while driving and service battery charging will pop on dashboard.
Car randomly goes into engine reduced power mode and won't go over 50mph. Power steering either won't turn the wheels and will start working again without warning while driving and jerks wheel to the right. Service stabilitrac warning would come on intermittently and disable traction control. Service stabilitrac warning is on now everytime I crank the vehicle and traction control is never working. I have pictures where it has went in limp mode and videos of the gauges doing crazy things after this warning has come up. Very dangerous. Car will jerk the wheel without warning when power steering warning comes on.
The Dash board instrument cluster is turning on and off randomly. loosing steering control due to electronic steering. Mechanics cant find a problem and seems to be common with this year Malibu. wont replicate at Mechanics completely random. Just had a new battery installed also and Mechanics say everything is within specs. No warning on this it just happens. 83000 miles on car and it happened about a year ago once and last two weeks several times. The front passenger seat got some water on it and the presence sensor must have deactivated the air bag system. Much to sensitive to be reliable.
I was driving down a busy street one day after work during the early night, and as I went to engage the brakes my whole electrical system started to shut off and on. Once I came to a complete stop it shut off my a/c then proceeded with my radio and lights. I took my foot of the brake in pure shock and back on come my a/c and radio. I proceed to drive with caution and again it starts to try and shut off my vehicles electrical systems. I pull over turn the car off check the battery and fine. Trusting it to make it less than the mile trip left home I drive again no issues, as I am approaching a busy intersection then car begins to go haywire with the electrical systems without the ac on and locks the all eletric steering systems and almost causes me to collide with surrounding traffic. Took to have diagnostic run for codes and none. Purchased another brand new battery which I thought maybe it was defective. Well wasn't NY of the issues because tonight with my family's safety put at serious risk along with any of the many tourist pedestrians and other motorist I experience the same exact thing but within a higher speed limit zone. When I pulled over to park the car it refused to cooperate. It was if my car was being controlled by a hacker and I was fighting for control over the wheel.
Car cuts off and stalls and lights flickering
When driving this vehicle with ~111,000 miles on it. The infotainment center continually rebooted, causing drops of Bluetooth connection and pauses in the AC. The instrument panel stayed working, but lights turned off. This happened about 6 times in a 20 minute drive on the highway. After exiting the highway and executing a turn the reboot happened again, however the power steering locked up making the car unmanageable. Thankfully nothing was hit by the car! After this incident, driver was rightfully freaked out and won't touch the car again until this is resolved. One week prior the car rebooted once and the engine idled oddly, turned car off and on and worked fine for about a week, then the above incident happened.

THE STEERING WHEEL STICKS/LOCKS UP ON LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS, USUALLY WHILE DRIVING ON STREET ROADS. THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO LOCKED WHILE SWITCHING LANES ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. THE RADIO ALSO BLANKS IN/OUT OFTEN WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, SOMETIMES IN CONJUNCTION WITH STEERING ISSUES. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR A SHORT TIME AND BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP ON REPEATED OCCASIONS WITHOUT ANY LUCK WITH DUPLICATION OR RESOLUTION. ALSO, THE PENDING PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL REGARDING THE REAR SUSPENSION TOE LINK HASN'T BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO NO AVAILABILITY OF PARTS FROM MANUFACTURER. THIS HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS BACK A FEW TIMES AND I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT BECAUSE IT WASNT HAPPENING AT THE TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS REPAIRED FOR THE SAME ELECTRICAL FAILURE. DESPITE THE SECOND REPAIR, THE FAILURE RECURRED WITH THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WHILE HER HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AT 30 MPH. THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THE SAME INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER ELECTRICAL SHORT IN THE FUSE BOX. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 95,000.

I'VE TAKEN IT TO A MECHANIC TWICE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AND HE SEES NO OBVIOUS REASONS WHY IT WOULD DO THIS, AND THERE ARE NO CODES TO PULL TO EXPLAIN IT. ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE IT SHOULD BE MADE A RECALL AND LOOKED INTO! IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE LIKE THIS THAT CAN SHUT OFF AND THE STEERING LOCKS AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT. WITH THIS IT STOPS COMPLETELY LIKE THE CAR IS SHUT OFF. WHEN YOU SWITCH YOUR TURN SIGNAL ON AND THEN TURN ALL ELECTRONICS AND CAR SHUTS OFF UNTIL YOU TURN THE SIGNAL OFF OR LET GO OUT THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE ALMOST WRECKED 4 TIMES WITH KIDS IN THE CAR. I BOUGHT THIS 2013 MALIBU IN FEBRUARY 2014. IN 2016 IT STARTED WITH THE MANY ISSUES. THE HYBRID SYSTEM WHEN STOPPED AT STOP SIGN OR LIGHT WOULD DIE. THE CAR WOULD COMPLETELY DIE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THAT LEAD TO THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT. EVERY CODE ON THE DASH BOARD WOULD COME ON. THEN THE BATTERY WOULD JUST COMPLETELY DIE AND NEED TO BE JUMPED. IT WOULD RUN OK FOR A FEW DAYS THEN BE DEAD THE NEXT. MORE AND MORE THE BATTERY WOULD COMPLETELY BE DEAD EVERY FEW DAYS. HAD TWO NEW BATTERIES INSTALLED AND IT WOULD TEST FINE USUALLY. SEEMED THAT SOMETHING WAS DRAINING IT SOMEHOW. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER MANY TIME AND COULD NEVER GET A DEFINITIVE ANSWER. FINALLY IN NOVEMBER 2019 I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT COMPLETELY DIED AND WOULD NOT TAKE A CHARGE (JUMP). STRANDED ON THE HIGH I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO COYLE CHEVROLET ONLY TO BE TOLD THEY DIDN'T HAVE A HYBRID MECHANIC TO LOOK AT IT. THEN HAD IT TOWED TO BACHMAN CHEVROLET ONLY FOR THEM TO TELL ME AFTER HAVING IT FOR TWO WEEKS THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE. EITHER THEY NEEDED TO DISASSEMBLE IT TO FIND THE PROBLEM OR I WOULD NEED TO GET A NEW ENGINE FOR $7,000. I HAD A CLAIM WITH GM BUT THEY ALSO JUST GAVE ME THE RUN AROUND. THE CAR ITSELF IS ONLY WORTH $3,500-$4,500. I STILL WAS PAYING ON THE LOAN FOR IT ALSO. NOT ONLY HAVE I NOT HAD A CAR SINCE NOVEMBER I HAVE A CAR THAT WON'T START AND CAN NOT TRADE IN ON ANOTHER CAR. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES NO RECALLS ARE ON THE CAR FOR THEM. VERY FRUSTRATING SITUATION I DEALT WITH FOR A FEW YEARS WITH THE CAR AND NO SOLUTION FOR A FIX. I LOVED THAT CAR AND CHEVY BUT VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THEM. NEED TO INVEST IN ANOTHER MODEL I GUESS.

NO INJURIES OR DAMAGES OCCURRED DUE TO THE FAILURE AND THE POLICE WERE NOT CALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT A STEADY 20 MPH TO HEISER CHEVROLET LOCATED AT 2620 W WASHINGTON ST, WEST BEND, WI 53095 WHERE THE VEHICLE REMAINED IN THEIR POSSESSION AND PROVIDED A LOANER VEHICLE. THEY THEN CAME AND INFORMED ME THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY CARE BECAUSE, NO CODES WHERE POPPING UP AND THE MECHANIC TRIED 4 TIMES BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE SITUATION I WAS HAVING. IT IS NOW DECEMBER 11TH AND I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I JUST DROVE TO WORK TODAY AND WENT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN DOWN THE STREET LEADING TO MY JOB THE SERVICE POWER STEERING FLASHED AGAIN ,THE CAR STALLED ,AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS TIME THE CAR SLOWED ALL THE WAY DOWN UNTIL IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. EVEN THOUGH MY CAR HAD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IT WAS STILL ON AND RUNNING. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN THE OTHER LANE, AS MY CAR VEERED ACROSS THE LINE, INTO THE OTHER LANE. THE POWER CAME BACK ON A FEW SECONDS LATER. I BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT, HOWEVER THEY WERE UNABLE TO PINPOINT THE ISSUE. THEY SCANNED THE VEHICLES SYSTEM FOR ERROR CODES, CLEARED THE CODES AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. SINCE THIS INITIAL ISSUE, MY CAR LOSES POWER RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING, PARKED, USING MY TURN SIGNAL, TURNING LEFT, TURNING RIGHT, ETC. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT, THE DASHBOARD AND VEHICLE DISPLAY MONITOR GO BLACK. SOME INSTANCES IT WILL FLICKER, OTHER TIMES IT WILL SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. I HAVE HAD IT TOWED FROM MY DRIVEWAY AS I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO TURN IT ON AND TOWED FROM A RETAIL PARKING LOT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES AND A SEPARATE PRIVATELY OWNED GARAGE TWICE, WITH NO RESOLUTION. I CONTACTED GM/CHEVROLET REGARDING THE ISSUE AND A CASE NUMBER WAS GIVEN TO ME. THEY HAD ME BRING MY CAR TO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP. AFTER THEIR INSPECTION, THE DEALERSHIP STATED IT WAS THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE THAT IS MALFUNCTIONING. I REACHED OUT TO CHEVROLET AGAIN ABOUT A RESOLUTION AND THEY INDICATED THE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY SO NO REPAIR SUPPORT WILL BE PROVIDED. IF THIS ISSUE WOULD HAVE BEEN RESOLVED WITHIN THE INITIAL INSPECTION, THE CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED STATUS OF MY VEHICLE MAY HAVE COVERED REPAIRS. NEARLY CAUSED A COUPLE ACCIDENTS. THE SERVICE STABILTRAK LIGHT WOULD ALSO COME INTERMITTENTLY COME ON. BROUGHT TO DEALERSHIP AGAIN, THEY CLEARED THE DASH LIGHTS AND RESET A SENSOR THAT WAS SHOWING BAD IN A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN. CAR RAN SMOOTHLY FOR A FEW MONTHS. SHOWED SYMPTOMS AGAIN OVER THE SUMMER(LIGHTS FLICKERING AND LOSS OF TOUCH SCREEN MOMENTARILY). DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO RECREATE AGAIN. NOW THIS WINTER THE CAR IS COMPLETELY MESSED UP AGAIN, SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS AS LAST TIME. POWER STEERING LOSS, FULL ELECTRICAL LOSS WHILE IN MOTION, SOMETIMES RANDOMLY, OTHER TIMES AS A DIRECT RESULT OF ENGAGING WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AS I DESCRIBED BEFORE. ALSO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER COMES ON BUT IT DOES SAY SERVICE POWER STEERING AND SERVICE STABILI TRAK. SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS NOT MOVING (PARKED) IT WILL ALSO CUT OFF. ONCE, I WENT TO START THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START AND IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO REMOVE THE KEY. I TRIED MAKING SURE THE CAR WAS IN PARK (WHICH I KNEW IT WAS BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN PARKED FOR HOURS) BUT NOTHING WOULD MOVE. I ALMOST HAD IT TOWED AND THEN OUT THE BLUE EVERYTHING POPPED ON. CHEVROLET ADVISED THAT THEY "THINK" IT COULD BE THE BATTERY CABLES AND THE FUSE BOX BUT CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL FIX THE ISSUE. I HAVE ALREADY PAID 167.00 FOR THEM TO "TIGHTEN" THE CABLES AND TELL ME WHAT THEY "THINK" MAY BE THE ISSUE. THE LOCKING OF THE STEERING WHEEL HAPPENS UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMIT TO WHEN PARKING, CRUISING ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD (SPEED BELOW 30 MPH), CHANGE LANES IN HIGHWAYS (SPEED AROUND 50 MPH), AND SEVERAL TIMES WHILE THE CAR WAS ACTUALLY PARKED WITHOUT MOTION. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP IN APRIL 2015 FOR THE FIRST TIME. IN THE FOLLOWING TWO YEARS UNTIL LAST WEEK (MARCH 2017), THE DEALERSHIP REPLIED "COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE" EVERY SINGLE TIME. IN THE RECENT SEVERAL TIMES OF ME VISITING THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE, THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY CABLES (WITH A CHARGE FOR $750), AND THE FUSE BOX (WITH A CHARGE OF $108), BUT STILL, THE PROBLEM EXISTS. THE LAST VISIT TO THE DEALER ENDS UP WITH THE ROUTINE REPLY OF "CAN NOT DUPLICATE" BUT THEY DID ADMIT THAT THERE IS INDEED AN ISSUE SINCE I SHOWED THEM A VIDEO I RECORDED WHEN THE ISSUE HAPPENS. THE LOCKING OF THE STEERING WHEEL HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME WHEN I TRIED TO ROTATE THE STEERING WHEEL (TO MAKE TURNING WHILE DRIVING OR PARKING OF COURSE), BUT THE ISSUE IS THAT IT DOES NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN. IT ONLY HAPPENS EVERY NOW AND THEN. THAT IS WHY I AM STILL DRIVING IT AFTER TWO YEARS SINCE UNFORTUNATELY, THAT IS MY ONLY CAR. I COMPLAINED TO CHEVY FOR THE THIRD TIME AT CORPORATE LEVEL AND THEY HAD DENIED MY CLAIM AS BEING SAFETY RELATED. AT LEAST ONCE LAST MONTH AND 3 TIMES THIS MONTH I EXPERIENCED TRANSIENT EPISODES OF WHAT I CATEGORIZE AS POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. THREE OF THESE TIMES WERE AT REDUCED SPEEDS LESS THAN 20 MPH DURING A TURN AND ONCE TRAVELING 65 MPH DOWN A STRAIGHT SECTION OF THE HIGHWAY. ON TWO OF THE TURNING EVENTS I MANAGED TO AVOID HEAD ON COLLISIONS WITH OTHER VEHICLES AT THE INTERSECTION/PARKING ENTRANCE. THESE EPISODES ARE SHORT DURATIONS AND MAY BE CHARACTERIZED BY SUDDEN STIFFNESS IN THE WHEEL, JERKING TO ONE SIDE OR WHAT SEEMS LIKE A POWER STEERING FAILURE. ON THE LAST EVENT TODAY A POWER LOSS TO MY CONSOLE WAS NOTED. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND GIVEN MY NEAR MISSES IN THE SHORT TIME I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR, I HAVE TO WONDER HOW MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THIS PROBLEM WERE OUT THERE THAT ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT. ON A SAFETY NOTE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM TO MAINTAIN A FIRM GRIP WITH BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL WHEN MAKING A TURN ON A SEPARATE NOTE I MENTIONED THAT I ALSO HAD TROUBLE WITH THE TIRES. IT MADE FOR A VERY SCARY RIDE AND FORCED ME TOO CAREFULLY REDUCE SPEED TO A MINIMUM OF 45-50MPH. HOWEVER ABOUT 4 TIMES IT HAS HAD MAJOR EPISODES WHERE ALL OF THE LIGHTS WILL BLINK (LIKE I WAS RESTARTING THE CAR), THE WHEEL LOCKS UP, THE BRAKES LOCK UP, THE CAR ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL AND THEN ABOUT 6 SECONDS IT WILL JERK LIKE IT'S GOING INTO GEAR AND ONCE I PULL OVER AND RESTART IT, IT MAY HAPPEN AGAIN OR IT MAY BE FINE FOR A WHILE. IT HAS SHOWN ON THE SCREEN ON THESE 4 TIMES WORDS OF "CHECK POWER STEERING OR STABILITRAK WARNING" IT'S VERY SCARY. I'VE ALMOST WRECKED 3 DIFFERENT TIMES BECAUSE THE WHEEL LOCKS UP AND I WAS IN A TURN WHEN IT DID IT. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY YOUNG CHILDREN AND WE WERE ALMOST REAR ENDED BY AN 18 WHEELER ON THE INTERSTATE AT RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. I FEEL LIKE I'M DRIVING A DEATH TRAP. THE BRIEF BOX POPS UP FOR A FEW SECONDS, INDICATING CHECK POWER STEERING, STABILITRAK WARNING LIGHT ON AND PARKING BRAKE SAYS IT'S ON. ALL THIS HAPPENED, EIGHT TIMES IN TEN MINUTES. THEN I PROCEED TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND I NEARLY HIT A VEHICLE THAT WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT. IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY BUT I DID NOTICE WHEN I HAD THE A/C ON IT HAPPENED REPEATEDLY. AGAIN VEHICLE IS AT CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM, DEALING WITH GM CORPORATE AT THIS TIME.

SOMETIMES I WILL BE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS IN TOWN AND IF I SLIGHTLY ACCELERATE THE RADIO SHUTS OFF. ONCE I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT AND I HAD MY TURN SIGNAL ON TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. TOO MANY INCIDENTS TO GO INTO DETAIL HERE. HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY SAY THERE IA NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. SUBSEQUENTLY GETS WORSE WHICH EACH OCCURRENCE. LAST OCCURRENCE AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS CAME ON AND SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSED LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I RECENTLY JUST BOUGHT A 2013 CHEVY MALIBU AND I WAS EXCITED, NOW I AM JUST HAVING REGRETS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AT OR AROUND 45 MPH AND OVER. MY CAR STARTS TO DRIFT TOWARDS THE YELLOW OR WHITE LINE, AND I WILL TRY TO MAKE THE MINOR ADJUSTMENTS (JUST LIKE I WOULD IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE) AND I FIND MYSELF TUGGING PRETTY FORCEFULLY TO BREAK IT FREE, WHICH THEN RESULTS IN MY CAR JERKING OVER QUICKLY IN THE OTHER DIRECTION AND THEN I HAVE TO TRY TO CORRECT MY DIRECTION AGAIN. IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS ALLOWING THE ASSIST TO LIGHTEN UP THEN SOMETHING JAMS UNTIL A SLIGHT CORRECTION UNLOCKS IT.THERE IS VERY LITTLE NORMAL ROAD FEEL THROUGH THE STEERING WHEN THIS OCCURS. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS ROUTE A NUMBER OF TIMES BEFORE WITHOUT INCIDENT AND AROUND TOWN AT LOW SPEEDS IT IS FINE.I SHOULD MENTION THIS MODEL IS THE LTZ WITH WIDE TIRES (19 INCH GOODYEAR EAGLE RSA: HORRIBLE TRACTION IN SNOW BUT VERY GOOD ON DRY ROAD SURFACE) THAT ARE INFLATED TO THE PROPER 35PSI ALL AROUND PER THE OPERATORS INSTRUCTIONS. I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT MY PREVIOUS CAR WAS A 2005 MALIBU WITH ELECTRIC STEERING SO I AM QUITE FAMILIAR WITH THIS TYPE ASSIST AND THAT ONE NEVER BEHAVED LIKE THIS. WHILE DRIVING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS, PARTICULARLY AFTER MORE THAN 30 MINUTES OF CONTINUOUS TRAVEL, MY 2013 CHEVROLET MALIBU'S STEERING BECOMES EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THE CAR WILL "WANDER" LEFT OR RIGHT EVEN THOUGH THE STEERING WHEEL IS HELD STRAIGHT. WHEN I ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE "WANDER," THE STEERING WHEEL DOES NOT REACT. AFTER APPLYING CONTINUOUS PRESSURE TO THE STEERING WHEEL FOR APPROXIMATELY 2 SECONDS, IT THEN "GIVES" TOO MUCH IN THE CORRECTIVE DIRECTION. IT IS AS IF THE STEERING RESPONSE IS DEAD AND THEN OVER-CORRECTION OCCURS. IF THE WANDER OCCURS TO THE LEFT FIRST, OVER-CORRECTION WILL OCCUR, AND THEN THE CAR WILL WANDER TO THE RIGHT, AND THEN OVER-CORRECTION WILL OCCUR AGAIN, ETC. AS A DRIVER, IT FEELS AS IF TRAVELING IN A STRAIGHT LINE IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE AND A ZIG-ZAG PATTERN IS THE NEW STRAIGHT. THIS OVER-CORRECTION OF THE DEAD STEERING WHEEL VARIES IN LEVEL OF INTENSITY. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL OCCASIONS SINCE INITIAL FAILURE THAT HAVE RESULTED IN NEAR ACCIDENTS. MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WAS NOT ABLE TO RECREATE THE ISSUE (THEY WOULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR 30 CONTINUOUS MINUTES AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS OF 70 MPH). THE DEALER ROTATED MY TIRES AND CHECKED ALIGNMENT WITH NO ISSUES IDENTIFIED OR CAUSES FOR CONCERN NOTED. THE DATE OF THIS SERVICE WAS 12-31-2013. AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS THE STEERING WILL HAVE SOME FORM OF A DEAD SPOT IN IT. THIS STARTED AROUND 13000 AND I NOW HAVE OVER 20000 MILES ON IT.YOU WILL ATTEMPT TO GO LEFT OR RIGHT AND HAVE TO CORRECTED THE STEERING WITH ALOT MORE FORCE THAN NORMAL. THIS HAS OCCURRED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AS WELL AS IN CITY TRAFFIC. ON 2 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS SO FAR IN CITY TRAFFIC, I HAVE ALMOST CAUSED WRECKS FROM THE CORRECTION. MY WIFE AND I BOTH HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE DEAD SPOTS EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT WE DRIVE THE CAR. TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE. BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE ISSUE. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE STEERING ANGLE AND POSITION SENSOR CALIBRATION. AND NO CHANGE. THE DEALER TOLD ME THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM AND IS FAR MORE RESPONSIVE TO DRIVER INPUT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, THE STEERING WHEEL BECOME STIFF. STEERING BECAME STICKY STIFF IN 12 O'CLOCK POSTITION, MAKING STEERING CORRECTIONS DIFFICULT WITH OVERCORRECTING. THERE IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM THAT COULD BE A SEVER SAFETY HAZARD. I WAS TRAVELING ON I-75 AT 65-70 MPH WHEN MALFUNCTION OCCURRED. I CONTACTED A DEALER IN TAMPA AND THEY DID NOT SEEM TOO CONCERNED, HARD TO COMMUNICATE DUE TO IT BEING A HOLIDAY WEEKEND. THE TAMPA DEALER ADVISED IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM, I WOULD HAVE RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER. I AM CONCERNED, BEING ON VACATION, FOR THE LONG TRIP BACK TO KNOXVILLE.
