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

I OWN A 1995 CHEVROLET S10 2WD PICKUP TRUCK. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE MY ANTILOCK BRAKES HAVE FAILED TO STOP ME IN A REASONABLE DISTANCE. I HAVE NOT YET RECIEVED A NOTICE FROM THE MANUFACTURER SO I WAS WONDERING WHAT I SHOULD DO. THANK YOU.*AK
WE ARE THE OWNERS OF A 1995 CHEVY S10 LS VIN NUMBER [XXX]. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL MINOR PROBLEMS AND A FEW MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE TRUCK IN THE THREE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. THE MOST RECENT PROBLEM IS SERIOUS AND CAUSED A POTENTIALLY FATAL SITUATION, ALL WHICH HAVE MADE US UNHAPPY WITH THE TRUCK. I APPROACHED A STOPLIGHT, WHERE OTHER VEHICLES WERE STOPPED AND I PROCEEDED TO SLOW DOWN. THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THAT MY BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONDING AND THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN. I CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKE IN DISBELIEF BUT STILL MY TRUCK CAREENED ON. THIS ALL OCCURRED IN LESS THAN 5 SECONDS. BEFORE I KNEW IT I WAS GIVEN A CHOICE OF EITHER SLAMMING MY TRUCK INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT 40MPH, OR TAKING MY CHANCES ON THE SIDEWALK, THAT TO MY BLESSING WAS EMPTY. DESPERATELY, I VEERED MY TRUCK TO THE RIGHT OVER THE SIDEWALK, OVER BLOCK BARRIERS ONTO A PARKING LOT PRAYING THAT THE IMPACT WOULD SLOW MY TRUCK DOWN. MY TRUCK FINALLY ROLLED TO A STOP. UPON INSPECTION OF THE TRUCK, IT TURNS OUT THAT THE BRAKES FAILED BECAUSE A PLASTIC PART THAT CONNECTS A VACUUM LINE TO THE BRAKE BOOSTER BROKE. I AM SHOCKED AND OUTRAGED THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD HAPPEN. IF THIS PART FAILS AT ANY TIME, THERE ARE NO POWER BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO THE OWNER''S MANUAL, THE PART IN QUESTION NEVER NEEDS SERVICING AND HAS NO REPLACEMENT INTERVAL. WHAT EVEN SCARIER IS THAT WE HAVE HAD OUR BRAKES SERVICED TWICE IN THE PAST TWO YEARS. QUESTION TO GM AND OTHER WHY DID THIS PART BREAK? WHAT COULD WE HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THIS INCIDENT? HAVE THERE BEEN SIMILAR INCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE WITH OTHER GM TRUCKS? IS THIS A RECALL ITEM? FAILURE #1-REAR BRAKES WOULD LOCK WHEN STOPPING. THIS WOULD ACTIVATE THE REAR ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM AND RESULT IN EXTRA LONG STOPPING. FAILURE #2-THE AIR VACUUM HOSE THAT CONTROLS THE POSITION OF THE VENTS (IE HEATER OR VENT OR DEFROST) MELTED AND CONTROL OF THE DEFROST WAS LOST. WINDSHIELD FROSTED OVER AND REDUCED VISION THROUGH WINDSHIELD RESULTING IN DANGEROUS CONDITION. DT
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHEN TRYING TO APPLY THE BRAKES THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL GO TO THE FLOOR CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO HAVE EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. DEALER NOTIFIED MR
THE ABS ANTILOCKING LIGHT ON THE DASH BOARD CAME ON. WHEN I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO THE DELIVER I WAS TOLD THAT THE BPMV VALVE HAD FAILED AND THAT I HAD NO ABS BRAKES. THEN I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD COST ME $1400 TO REPLACE THIS VALVE. I FIND THIS COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE FOR A SAFETY SYSTEM REPAIR. SINCE THEN I HAVE FOUND OUT FROM OTHER SOURCES THAT THE RETAIL GM PRICE OF THE VALVE IS ONLY $108.63. I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE CHEV S10 ABS SYSTEM. SHOULDN'T THIS BE REPAIRED UNDER A RECALL? IF NOT IT SHOULD AS LEAST BE REPAIRED AT A REASONABLE COST!*AK

THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE APPEARS TO HAVE NEVER FUNCTIONED PROPERLY. I HAVE REPLACED FRONT BRAKES, BUT NOTICED THAT THE REAR BRAKES DID NOT APPEAR TO BE FUNCTIONING (ESPECIALLY NOTICED WHILE IN REVERSE). UPON INSPECTION, THE REAR SHOES SHOWED LITTLE OR NO WEAR. I DID REPLACE THE SHOES IN THE HOPE THAT THIS WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT IT HAS NOT. I SUSPECT THAT THE REAR BRAKES HAVE NEVER BEEN FUNCTIONAL. THE PROBLEM CAME TO MY ATTENTION WHEN UNDERGOING AN OMISSIONS TEST WITH THE REAR WHEELS ON ROLLERS - THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE WHEELS FROM TURNING. I DID NOT DETECT THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY DUE TO THE INFREQUENCY OF BRAKING UNDER THE CONDITION OF DRIVING IN REVERSE, ALTHOUGH THIS HAS NEVER BEEN VERY GOOD ON THIS VEHICLE. *AK
THE ANTILOCK BRAKES HAVE FAILED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. COLD WEATHER ENHANCES THE PROBLEM. ONE ACCIDENT AS OCCURED AND SEVERAL NEAR MISSES. CONTACTED GM AND THE LOCAL DEALER. THEY BOTH INDICATED NO RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED ON THIS VEHICLE FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. DEALER WANTED TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER WHICH IS IN WORKING ORDER. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THERE HAS INDEED BEEN SEVERAL ABS RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE. I NEED SOME HELP IN RESOLVING THIS PROBLEM. THANKS.*AK
ON JAN 19, 2002 I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON ROUTE 17, WHEN A CAR CUT ACROSS THE INTERSECTION DOWN THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME AND A COUPLE OF OTHER DRIVERS. I HAD TO APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND LISTENED TO THEM GROAN AND GLIDE ALL THE WAY TILL THEY HIT THE FLOOR , AFTER WHICH I THEN ROLLED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. DUE TO INADEQUATE REPAIR SERVICE AT THE CLOSEST CHEVROLET DEALER I WAITED TO GO TO BRUNSON IN HAMPTON SC FOR REPAIRS ON THIS AND ALSO ON THE FAILURE OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER (COVERED UNDER ANOTHER RECALL). I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SINCE I GOT THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ABS AND THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS NORMAL. WHEN I BRAKE, IF I HIT A BUMP, THE BRAKES LOCK UP, AND I CONTINUE TO SLIDE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MANY OCCASIONS, ON DRY AND WET PAVEMENTS AND ON SNOW AND ICE. I CAME VERY CLOSE (10-15 FEET) TO SLIDING INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION ONCE WHEN THIS BRAKE PROBLEM OCCURRED. I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED, WAS TOLD THAT MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS MANUFACTURED AT A DIFFERENT PLANT. I HAVE WASTED A LUNCH HOUR AND A LOT OF TIME ON THE PHONE TRYING TO GET SATISFACTION FROM GMC, TO NO AVAIL, BESIDES PUTTING MY LIFE AND OTHER'S LIVES ON THE LINE WHENEVER I DRIVE. AS FOR THE DRIVER'S SEAT PROBLEM, THIS DEVELOPED ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. THE LEVER ON THE SIDE OF THE SEAT WHICH LAYS THE BACK DOWN AND BRINGS IT UP CAME OFF, STRIPPED (IT WAS PLASTIC). NOW I HAVE NO WAY TO ADJUST MY SEATBACK, AND EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, IT SLIPS BACK ON IT'S OWN AND I CANNOT CONTROL IT. I AM SURE THAT ONE OF THESE DAYS I'LL BE DRIVING ALONG AND MY SEATBACK WILL JUST FALL DOWN. THE GLOVE BOX DOOR BROKE OFF THE DASH. IF I HAVE AN ACCIDENT, IT WILL BECOME A MISSILE INSIDE THE CAB. I HAVE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER ON THREE OCCASIONS, ON TWO OF THE OCCASSIONS, THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES, ON THE THIRD VISIT THEY SAID THEY RECREATED TO CONDITION BUT THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR ANTILOCK BRAKES AND THEY FAILED TO LIST THIS ON THE TICKET. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED GENERAL MOTORS ABOUT THE INCIDENTS IN QUESTION AND THEY SAID IF THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT RECREATE IT THEN THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT. DURING ALL OF THIS I HAVE SEEN ON T.V. (DATELINE) AND READ OF OTHERS HAVING THE SAME TROBLE WITH THEIR BRAKES. THE BRAKES USUALLY FAIL AT UNDER 35MPH UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT AND ALL MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
