TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES REPEATEDLY FAILED. THE HUBS, CALIPERS, ROTORS, AND THE MASTER CYLINDER WERE REPAIRED THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED, THEY WOULD VIBRATE VIOLENTLY AND SEIZE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TWO DIFFERENT MECHANIC SHOPS FOR THE REPAIRS, BUT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTIES AVAILABLE. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 105,000.

ANTILOCK BRAKE SENSOR ACTIVATED THE BRAKES AT LESS THAN 5MPH JUST AS LISTED IN THE RECALL WHICH INCLUDES 1999 AND BEYOND. IT WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE SO I HAD IT IN FOR SERVICE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THEY FINALLY FOUND THE ISSUE WAS THE CORROSION ON THE AB SENSOR AND CLEANED THEM. THIS RESOLVED THE ISSUE. IT HAS NOW STARTED AGAIN AS OF DECEMBER 2011 WITH 84,000 MILES. IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE AS BEFORE AND AS LISTED IN THE RECALL FOR 1999 AND NEWER VERSIONS.

WHILE DRIVING, APPLIED BRAKES. PEDAL WENT ALMOST TO FLOOR AND REQUIRED A SIGNIFICANT DISTANCE TO STOP. NOTICED FLUID LEAKING THROUGH THE FRAME ON DRIVERS SIDE OF THE TRUCK. FOUND A PIN HOLE LEAK IN THE STEEL BRAKE LINE AT THE 45 DEGREE BEND AT REAR OF TRUCK WHERE IT OFFSETS UP TO CLEAR THE FRAME AND THEN BACK DOWN TO ITS CONNECTION BY DRIVERS REAR SHOCK. THE LEAK WAS HIDDEN BEHIND THE PLASTIC BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE STEEL LINE TO THE FRAME. THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE RUNNING ALONG THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME HAS EXCESSIVE CORROSION. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. FORTUNATELY THIS DIDN'T OCCUR IN A PANIC STOP. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND MOVED IT FROM THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 190,000.

MY 1998 CHEVROLET SILVERADO K1500 HAD A TOTAL FRONT BRAKE ROTOR FAILURE IN WHICH THE HUB OF THE ROTOR DETACHED FROM THE ROTOR ITSELF, RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING ON THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE. THIS WAS THE FACTORY ROTOR. ANY STOPS RESULTED IN PULLING TO THE LEFT, HEAVY BRAKING CAUSED EXTREME MOVING OF THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT. FROM READING OTHER ARTICLES ON THE NET I AM TOLD BY UNHOOKING THE ABS IT WILL STOP DOING THIS BUT THEN I WILL HAVE NO ABS. WHATS THE POINT IN HAVING A NEW TRUCK WHEN THE REAR END WILL LOCK UP JUST LIKE IT DOES IN MY 1982 FORD TRUCK WITH NO ABS.

I HAD READ NUMEROUS PEOPLES COMPLAINT ON THIS ISSUE. THERE APPARENTLY SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE A 98 CHEVY SILVERADO EXT. CAB 4X4 AND I'M HAVING A PROBLEM WITH LOW SPEED(5-10MPH) WHERE THE ABS COMES ON AND SLOWLY AND DANGEROUSLY STOPS THE VEHICLE. I REALIZE THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS ARE THE PROBLEM, BUT IF THERE IS RECALL FOR 99-UP WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, WHY DOESN'T ANYONE FIX THIS? THIS IMPROVED THE BRAKING SYSTEM, BUT IT STILL DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AFTER FINDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTI-LOCK) FOR THE SAME FAILURE HE WAS EXPERIENCING. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF DRIVING ON WINTER ROADS IN WISCONSIN, BEING SNOW COVERED AND SOMETIMES ICY. HOWEVER, THIS CONDITION HAS CONTINUED THROUGH THE SPRING, SUMMER, AND NOW FALL. IN FACT, IT IS GETTING WORSE. IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP IN TIME AND MAYBE CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I'M WAITING TO SEE WHAT GM IS GOING TO DO REGARDING A RECALL THAT IS IN EFFECT FOR THIS VERY PROBLEM IN 14 STATES. WISCONSIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, BUT THEY SHOULD BE. THIS PART UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE, SINCE IT IS IN A PROTECTED AND SEALED AREA THAT REQUIRES MAJOR MECHANICAL WORK. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE POINT OF PURCHASE, DON MCCUE CHEVROLET WHERE I HAVE MAJORITY OF ALL WORK DONE. THEY FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY MECHANICS IN TOWN. THEY ARE USING THIS FACT FOR THE PURPOSE OF DENIAL OF ANY RESPONSIBILITY. I SPOKE WITH DENNIS BRINER THE SERVICE MANAGER AT DON MCCUE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AND HE STATED AFTER SOME ARGUING THAT THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE IS NOT CONSIDERED REGULAR MAINTENANCE WITH BRAKE JOBS OR ANY OTHER MAINTENANCE CHECK UP. THEY OFFERED $130.00 TO CLEAN THE CORROSION BUT LATER REFUSED, DUE TOO THE FACT THEY MAY BREAK THE SENSOR. MY FEELING IS, IS THAT THIS WAS A DEVELOPING PROBLEM OVER THE SHORT LIFE OF THE VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY GM. I SPOKE WITH GM CORPORATE DIRECTLY AND THEY RESPONDED THAT I FAILED TO KEEP REGULAR MAINTENANCE RECORDS. BUT WHEN I ASKED WHERE IN THEIR RECORDS DO THEY SHOW A REGULAR MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOR ABS SPEED SENSORS THEY SAID THERE ISN'T ONE. GM HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE ME WITH AN OWNER'S MANUAL THAT PROVES THEM RIGHT. THE SOLUTION WAS TO PULL THE ABS FUSE BY DIRECTION OF A DON MCCUE SERVICE TECH. WE THINK THAT THESE BRAKES SHOULD ONLY BE ENGAGING WHEN YOU ARE HAVING TO STOP SUDDENLY AND ARE CONCERNED THIS MAY BE MORE OF A PROBLEM LATER ON. WHEN CONSUMER TURNED THE KEY OFF, FRONT BRAKES UNLOCKED. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN REPAIR SHOP FIVE TIMES FOR THE BRAKES AND THE ABS SYSTEM. DEALER COULN'T DETERMINE THE CAUSE. *AK

WITH ONLY 20000 MILES OF LIGHT DRIVING (NO PULLING CONDITIONS), THE FRONT PADS WERE WORN TO THE POINT NEEDING REPLACEMENT. THE DEALER ADMITTED THAT THEY HAVE SEEN PADS WEAR OUT ON MY VEHICLE AT 15000 MILES IN SOME CASES. THIS, TO ME AND EVERY MECHANIC I'VE SPOKEN TO, SEEMS EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE.

BRAKE PEDAL WOULD GO TO THE FLOOR WHEN THE ABS BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS WOULD CAUSE AN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. SOMETIMES THERE ARE NO BRAKES. HAS BEEN TO DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE PROBLEM, BUT EACH TIME THE MECHANIC COULD NOT LOCATE PROBLEM. *AK
WHEN CONSUMER APPLIES THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE PULLS TO THE RIGHT.-THE SHOP REPAIRED IT, AND NOW IT PULLS TO THE LEFT. *AK

VEHICLE WOULD SQUEAL AND GRIND. ALSO, PULLED TO THE LEFT WHEN STOPPING. DEALER FOUND THE LEFT CALIPER SLID/FROZE UP. IN ADDITION, ROTORS AND FRONT PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO GRINDING OF ROTORS, REPAIRS WERE MADE AT OWNERS EXPENSE.*AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING ABOUT 45 MPH WHEN HE WAS REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. APPLIED BRAKES AND THE BRAKES WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOORBOARD. CONSUMER HIT THE CURB, AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. DRIVER'S AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. CONTACTED THE DEALER FOR REPAIR SERVICE. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THEY WENT TO THE FLOORBOARD AND VEHICLE KEPT GOING. THEN TRAVELING FOR A SHORT DISTANCE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. CONTACTED THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS, AND DEALER SAID THERE WASN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. BUT CONSUMER STATED THAT DEALER TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIRS THREE TIMES BEORE, AND THE PROMBLEM STILL EXISTS.
BRAKE PROBLEMS; WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES COMING TO A SUDDEN STOP, THE TRUCK WILL PULL TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. THIS HAPPENS ON ANY ROAD SURFACE. NO INCLEMENT WAETHER. DEALER NOT ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. NOT SURE IF THE TRUCK HAS ABS. *AK

CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER, DEALER HAS YET TO REPLACE ANY PARTS, UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ABOUT 55 MPH CONSUMER FRONT BRAKES DO NOT RELEASE, AND THE COMPONENT ON THE ABS KELSEY HEYES GETS TOO HOT AND CONSUMER CANNOT HOLD ON. WHEN BRAKES GET HOT THEY MAKE NOISE LIKE GRINDING METAL TO METAL. MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE CONTACTED. *AK

WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ABOUT 20 MPH BRAKE PADS DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. WHEN APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL THE VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO EITHER SIDE (LEFT OF RIGHT). THE OTHER SAFETY PROBLEM INVOLVED THE THROTTLE STICKING WHEN TRAVELING BETWEEN SPEEDS 10-25 MPH RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE OPERATING AS IF THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER, DEALER UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
