AN UNKNOWN DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE SEAT RAIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE PLASTIC SEAT HOLDERS FRACTURING UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

MANUAL DRIVERS SEAT ADJUSTER/LOCK FAILED ALLOWING DRIVER TO BE SLAMMED INTO STEERING WHEEL ON BRAKING. SEAT WOULD NOT LOCK IN ANY POSITION AND WOULD SLAM TO THE REAR OF THE ADJUSTMENT RAILS WITH SLIGHTEST ACCELERATION. THIS CREATED A COMPLETELY UNSTABLE PLATFORM FROM WHICH TO DRIVE AND PRESENTS AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE SITUATION IF/WHEN THE VEHICLE IS USED. I HAVE GONE ONLINE TO RESEARCH THIS SITUATION AND FOUND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN LARGE NUMBERS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, SOME WITH ACCIDENTS RESULTING FROM THE SITUATION. I HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THE PROBLEM IS A PLASTIC PART IN THE LOCKING MECHANISM WHICH BREAKS/FAILS. SOME HAVE REPORTED THAT THE VEHICLE OWNERS MUST PAY $400.00 OR SO TO GET THE NECESSARY REPAIRS. I AM AN 86 YEAR OLD ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND FEEL THAT, BECAUSE OF THE SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD CAUSED BY THIS SITUATION, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL REPAIR AND NOT AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE FOR ANY OWNER. THE CONTACT SUFFERED MINOR BRUISING ON HIS KNEES AS A RESULT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PLASTIC PARTS ON THE SEAT ADJUSTER FRACTURED. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. I OWN A 1999 CHEVROLET SILVERADO LT (NEW BODY STYLE) MODEL WITH 6-WAY POWER LEATHER BUCKET SEATS. OVER THE LAST 4-5 YEARS, BEGINNING WITH THE DRIVER'S SEAT, SLOP IN THE SEAT MOVEMENT HAS CREPT IN TO A POINT WHERE NOW BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS EXHIBIT AN APPROXIMATE 1 INCH MOVEMENT WHEN EITHER STOPPING OR TAKING OFF. IF THIS SEAT IS MOVED COMPLETELY FORWARD OR BACKWARD VIA THE CONTROL KNOB, THE MOVEMENT IS ELIMINATED, BUT I CANNOT DRIVE IN EITHER OF THESE POSITIONS. TIGHTENING THE BOLTS THAT SECURE THE SEAT TO THE FRAME DOES NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE BOLTS WERE NOT LOOSE. PULLED THE SEATS FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND IT APPEARS TO BE BEARING WEAR. THIS IS THE BEARING THAT THE WORM GEAR MECHANISM RIDES THROUGH. WITH THE SEATS REMOVED AND CENTERED BETWEEN FULLY FORWARD AND FULLY BACK, I CAN MOVE THE SEAT BY HAND AND WITNESS THE SLOP. MY DRIVER'S SEAT IS NEVER ADJUSTED AS IT IS ADJUSTED FOR ME ONLY SO I BELIEVE THE TAKE OFF AND STOP OVER THE YEARS MUST HAVE PLACED ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE BEARING(S) TO WEAR THEM TO A POINT THAT THEY NO LONGER HOLD THE SEAT IN PLACE. I CONFIRMED MY FINDINGS WITH A FIRESTONE TECHNICIAN WHO HAS BEEN SENDING THESE SEATS OUT FOR BEARING REPLACEMENTS FOR MANY OF HIS CUSTOMERS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT THERE WILL BE A POINT WHERE THE MECHANISM WILL FAIL AND MY SEAT WILL MOVE SIGNIFICANTLY FORWARD OR BACKWARDS WHEN EITHER TAKING OFF OR STOPPING CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE MOVEMENT HAS INCREASINGLY BECOME MORE SINCE I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM IN 2006. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS PROBLEM POSES A SAFETY RISK IN A PANIC STOP OR COLLISION SITUATION. THIRD, THE CONTACT REPLACED THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS TWICE. THE LIGHTS ONLY WORKED FOR 3 TO 6 MONTHS AT A TIME BEFORE HAVING TO BE REPLACED. THE LIGHTS WERE NOT ADDRESSED BY A DEALER OR A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP. FOURTH, THE HEADLAMP SWITCH CONSTANTLY BECAME EXCESSIVELY HOT DURING OPERATION OF THE HEADLAMPS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION OF THE SWITCH. FIFTH, WHEN THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE MODE WAS ENGAGED, THE WHEELS DID NOT TURN INDEPENDENTLY, CAUSING INCREASED EFFORT IN TURNING THE VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT INSPECTED. SIXTH, THE STARTER FAILED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION OF THE STARTER, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE HOUSING WAS CRACKED. A PRIVATE MECHANIC WAS CONSULTED, WHO NOTIFIED THE CONTACT THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. FINALLY, THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT DID NOT FEED ENOUGH TO ALLOW FOR PASSENGER COMFORT WHICH CAUSED THE PASSENGER TO BE ABRAISED BY THE BELT. THE INERTIAL CONTROL SEEMED TO BE INTERMITTENT. THE SEAT BELTS WERE NOT INSPECTED BY EITHER A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP OR A SERVICE DEALER.

CONSUMER STATED HAD RECALL 96E010000 REMEDIED FOR VEHICLE IN 07/00. DEALER DID PERFORMED STATED CORRECTIVE ACTION, BUT ONLY INSTALLED TEMPORARY HOLDING BOLTS FOR SEAT FRAME. THESE BOLTS BROKE WHILE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING, CAUSING DRIVER'S SEAT TO RECLINE BACK W/O WARNING. MANFACTURER ADVISED CONSUMER WILL NOT PERFORM RECALL REMEDY AGAIN. TS

VEHICLE VIBRATES AT SPEEDS OF 60 TO 70. GENERAL MOTORS INDICATED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THIS VEHICLE. GM ALSO INDICATED IT WOULD BE 30 TO 60 DAYS BEFORE NEW SPRINGS AND SHOCKS COULD BE DESIGNED FOR THE FRONT AND REAR. VEHICLE VIBRATES AND IS HARD TO CONTROL ON UNEVEN SURFACES. ALSO, THE TRACK ON THE DRIVERS SEAT BROKE AND THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THERE WERE NO PARTS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE SEAT TRACK AT THIS TIME. THE SEVICE MANAGER INDICATED THIS WAS A PROBLEM WHEN A NEW MODEL HITS THE MARKET. SEAT WAS REPAIRED BY PLACING A WOODEN BLOCK UNDER THE SEAT UNTIL PARTS ARE AVAILABLE.
