I WAS TRAVELING WEST BOUND IN THE CENTER LANE OF INTERSTATE 50 AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MILES PER HOUR WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE ABRUPTLY CHANGED LANES IN FRONT OF ME WHILE CROSSING THE SEVERN RIVER BRIDGE IN MARYLAND. I ABRUPTLY APPLIED MY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THERE WAS A TOTAL LOSS OF THE MAIN AND EMERGENCY BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY DOWN SHIFT AND COAST TO THE SHOULDER. UPON INSPECTION, I FOUND A BRAKE LINE UNDER THE CABIN AND UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT HAD CORRODED AND BROKEN AT THE HANGER AND BRAKE FLUID WAS DRAINING FROM THE LINE. *KB

2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2 WHEEL DRIVE EXTENDED CAB WITH 85000 MILES CRAWLING THROUGH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, SOMEONE CUT ME OFF. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT SLOWLY TO THE FLOOR. I TRIED "PUMPING THE PEDAL" TO NO EFFECT. I TRIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. IT DID NOT HOLD THE CAR. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD. SLOWED DOWN BY DOWN SHIFTING. COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. PUMPED THE BRAKES A FEW TIMES. I SAW A PUDDLE UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR. I HAD RUPTURE IN THE METAL BRAKE LINE. I CRAWLED TO A SERVICE STATION WHO REPLACED THE BRAKE LINE. 1 = WHEN I ARRIVED AT WORK, MY RIGHT REAR WHEEL WAS SEVERELY HEATING UP CAUSING WHEEL TO SMOKE AND SMELL OF BRAKE PADS BURNING UP. 2 = FIRST TIME OCCURRENCE, NO SOUND OF INTERMEDIATE SCRAPING NOISES HEARD FROM REAR OF VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. 3 = TOOK TRUCK TO REPAIR SHOP, THEY DETERMINED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PADS CAME INTO CONTACT WITH PARKING BRAKE DRUMS, CAUSING HEAT BUILD UP WHICH BURNED UP THE CALIPER, BRAKE PADS AND BRAKE HOSE AND THEN TOLD ME THERE WAS A 9 PAGE SAFETY RECALL ALREADY ISSUED BY GM FOR THIS SAME EXACT PARKING BRAKE DEFECT. I TOLD THEM NOT TO REPAIR THE TRUCK. I WENT TO THE GM DEALER TO HAVE IT REPAIRED FREE. GM REFUSED TO REPAIR THE TRUCK STATING THE SAFETY RECALL (I.E. # 05042B) ONLY EFFECTED VEHICLES WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND MY TRUCK IS AUTOMATIC. PLEASE NOTE: I USED TO BE NAISE CERTIFIED IN BRAKES. I ASKED THE SERVICE MGR WHAT DIFFERENCE IS THERE IN "ANY" OF THE BRAKE COMPONENT PART NUMBERS BETWEEN A MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC VEHICLE OF THIS SAME YEAR AND TYPE. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. IF I WENT TO THE AUTO PARTS STORE FOR ANY ONE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE COMPONENTS, BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, CALIPERS THEY WOULD NEVER ASK IF THE VEHICLE IS MANUAL OR AUTOMATIC, THEY ONLY ASK THE YEAR AND SIZE OF MOTOR. IF THE PARKING BRAKE CAN FAIL ON A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE, AND THERE IS NOT ONE DIFFERENCE IN PART NUMBERS THEN IT CAN FAIL ON AN AUTOMATIC VEHICLE. THE GM SERVICE MANAGER AGREED BUT SAID HE COULDN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE RECALL STATES MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES. I SAID YOU KNOW IT HAS TO BE A TYPO ERROR ON THE RECALL DOCUMENT. MY AUTOMATIC VEHICLE HAD A CONTACT CONDITION BETWEEN THE PARKING BRAKE PADS AND THE PARKING BRAKE DRUMS AND MY PARKING BRAKE "WAS NOT APPLIED". TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT NOTICED BRAKE FLUID LEAKING AND STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL MUST BE DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER ON JULY 16, 2007. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BRAKE LINES AND BRAKE PIPES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE INTO HER GARAGE DOOR AT 10 MPH. THE GARAGE DOOR HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 59,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000.

YEARLY INSPECTION IS DUE. MY HUSBAND CHECKED PARKING BRAKE 3 DAYS BEFORE TAKING MY PICKUP IN FOR INSPECTION. IT WAS FINE THAT DAY. MY PICKUP FAILED INSPECTION BECAUSE PARKING BRAKE WOULD NOT HOLD. MY HUSBAND TESTED THE BRAKE AT THE INSPECTION CENTER AND IT WENT TO THE FIREWALL AND WOULD NOT HOLD. WE ACCUSED THE INSPECTOR OF TAMPERING WITH THE BRAKE. HE INSISTS THE FAILURE OF THE PARKING BRAKE IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH OUR MODEL. WHICH IS TRUE? IF IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM GM SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AND REPAIR THE BRAKE AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. *JB

THIS IN ADDITION TO THE FAILURE OF THE FUEL SENSING MODULE IN FUEL TANK AND THE ABS BRAKE SHUDDER/FAILURE PROBLEMS AT LOWER SPEEDS. WHEN GETTING MY 2000 CHEVY TRUCK INSPECTED, IT FAILED DUE TO THE PARKING BRAKE NOT HOLDING. CURIOUS I WENT TO SEVERAL INSPECTION STATION AND ASKED FOR AN INSPECTION. THE FOUR SHOPS I APPROACHED ALL ASKED IF I HAD MY PARKING BRAKE FIXED BEFORE THEY WOULD INSPECT IT. WHEN SPEAKING TO A MORITZ CHEVY (IN FT. WORTH, TX) DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THAT IF YOU DON'T USE THE PARKING BRAKE IT WILL SHIFT AND NOT WORK. AND WORSE THEY SAID IT COULD RUB THE OTHER ROTORS AND EVENTUALLY NEED REPLACING. ALL THIS FROM SOMETHING THAT IS NEVER USED IN THE CAR. SHOULD I HAVE THE AIR BAG INSPECTED SINCE I NEVER USE IT? HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HURT OR WORSE? EVERYONE APPARENTLY KNOWS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PARKING BRAKE EXCEPT FOR CHEVY. WHY IS THAT? HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THEY WILL LISTEN? *JB

EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE SHOES WORN COMPLETELY OUT. 2000 CHEVY 1500 PICKUP TRUCK HAS FEW MILES BUT DEALER REFUSED TO FIX. DEALERS DO ADMIT IT IS A DESIGN DEFECT THAT ALLOWS THE SHOES TO RUB WHILE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN WEARING OUT THE SHOES. THEY HAVE A 'REDESIGNED PART' FOR REPLACEMENT. SINCE THE EMERGENCY BRAKES SHOULD NEVER ENGAGE WHILE IN MOTION THEY SHOULD LAST FOREVER AND ALWAYS BE FUNCTIONAL IF EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE IS NEEDED. THE COST TO REPLACE WAS SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS BUT THAT ISN'T THE REAL ISSUE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE PROBABLY MILLIONS OF VEHICLES OUT THERE WITH OWNERS THAT ASSUME THE BRAKE IS ENGAGE AND WORKING PROPERLY WHILE GM KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT APPARENTLY IS WILLING TO RISK LIVES TO PREVENT A RECALL. THIS LEAVE THE OWNERS AND THEIR CHILDREN NOT TO MENTION ANYONE ELSE NEAR THE VEHICLE AT RISK OF DEATH OR INJURY WHEN THE BRAKE IS NEEDED AND DOESN'T DO IT'S JOB. *JB
