Emergency brake keeps engaging Power steering problem, seat belt light stays on even when buckled. Headlights are dim
While driving home from work, while braking for a stoplight, the brake pedal suddenly went soft. Using an abundance of caution, i drove slowly home, though pumping brakes was required even when driving 5 mph. When i made it home, it was obvious there had been a catastrophic brake line failure, as fluid trailed across my driveway and pooled under my truck. On closer inspection, it's amazing how corroded all visible brake lines were. This failure could have happened at speed and would likely have resulted in a crash. I am appalled these have not been recalled.

BRAKE LINE BURST BELOW DRIVER'S DOOR. WAS ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT CRASHING AS I WAS ONLY MOVING A FEW MILES PER HOUR IN A DRIVEWAY, THOUGH THERE WAS VERY LITTLE BRAKING CAPACITY. I SEE IN A SEARCH THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL YEARS OF GM TRUCKS. GM APPARENTLY ADMITTED THEY USED INFERIOR STEEL FOR BRAKE LINES. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.

BRAKE LINE UNDER THE CAB BROKE DUE TO RUST. I LIVE IN EAST TENNESSEE IN AN AREA THAT DOES NOT USE EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF SALT ON THE ROADS IN THE WINTER AND ALWAYS TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY VEHICLES. I WOULD NOT EXPECT THIS MUCH RUST ON A SAFETY COMPONENT SUCH AS THE BRAKE LINE. WHEN SLOWING TO TURN OFF THE STREET INTO MY DRIVEWAY THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKES WERE VERY WEAK. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT CAUSED BY THE LINE RUPTURE. I CALLED THE LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP AND WAS QUOTED IN EXCESS OF $1,000 FOR REPAIR.

RECENTLY WHEN I HAD TO "SPIKE" THE BRAKES HARD TO AVOID WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT A BRAKE LINE UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT AREA RUPTURED DUE TO CORROSION. ONLY THROUGH EVASIVE ACTIONS WAS AN ACCIDENT AVOIDED. REPLACEMENT COSTS FROM A DEALERSHIP IS IN THE $800.00 AREA. WERE STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES INSTALLED DURING MANUFACTURE THIS EXTREMELY INHERENTLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM COULD BE AVOIDED. WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE COSTS ASSOCIATED IN VEHICLE PRODUCTION, THE SMALL INCREASE WOULD BE OFFSET IN LONG TERM SAFETY. MANY VEHICLE SAFETY FEATURES HAVE BEEN MANDATED OVER THE YEARS, CERTAINLY ISSUES CONCERNING BRAKE SYSTEMS MUST FALL UNDER THAT CATEGORY. I AM A LONG TIME COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, STAINLESS STEEL LINES WOULD PREVENT THE PROBLEM I ENCOUNTERED. JUDGING FROM INTERNET SITES I'M NOT ALONE IN DEALING WITH THIS CORROSION PROBLEM. REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTER MANY TIMES WITH NO RESULTS. ENGINE LEAKS OIL. LOOSING COOLANT, POSSIBLE BURNING IT. FUEL MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE. BODY RUSTED OUT. ROCKER PANELS ARE GONE. CAB CORNERS ARE GONE. REAR BUMPER IS GONE. PUTTING THE SPARE TIRE UNDERNEATH IS A STUPID IDEA. THE COST TO REPLACE THESE PARTS IS TOO EXPENSIVE. FOR WHAT THESE VEHICLES COST NEW ALL OF THESE PARTS SHOULD BE MADE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL OR USE PLASTIC FOR THE FUEL LINES AND BRAKE LINES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEING RELATED TO A POLLUTION CONTROL DEVICE SHOULD BE ENTIRE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THESE PARTS AND WHATEVER IS UPSTREAM THAT CAUSED THE POLLUTION CONTROL PART TO FAIL SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER IN PERPETUITY. ANTI LOCK BRAKES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM ALL CARS. I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH MY HAND AND SAW THE FLUID SQUIRT OUT AND SPLASH ON THE EXHAUST PIPE . I HAVE READ ON - LINE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO MANY MANY CHEVY TRUCK OWNERS ACROSS THE NATION . I DO NOT USE MY TRUCK IN MUD OR ON THE BEACH AND I DO NOT LIVE IN A STATE WITH HARSH WINTER SALT ISSUES . I LOOKED AT THE BRAKE LINES ON MY TRUCK AND THEY ARE RUSTED IN PLACES NOT THE WHOLE LENGTH AND THIS TO ME LOOKS LIKE A MATERIAL PROBLEM FROM THE MANUFACTURER . I HAD NO WARNING OF THIS PROBLEM , MY BAKE PEDAL WAS FINE RIGHT UP TO THE SECOND THAT LINE BURST AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR . I FEEL THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE A DEADLY ACCIDENT AND AS SUCH SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AND REPAIRED BY G.M. AT NO COST TO THE OWNERS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED . IT FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY AND I ALMOST RAN INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE 2ND LINE FAILED YESTERDAY 10/5/16 WHILE DRIVING ON A SECONDARY ROAD AND AGAIN WAS LOCATED ON THE ABS UNIT. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET. I BOUGHT A STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE KIT FROM DORMAN AND PLAN TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES ON THE TRUCK SO AS WE DON'T GET KILLED OR HARM ANYONE WE RUN INTO ON THE NEXT FAILURE AS THE REMAINING LINES ARE VERY, VERY RUSTY. FUTURE FAILURE OF THE REST OF THE LINES IS BOTH IMMINENT AND EXPECTED. NHTSA PLEASE ACT SO AS TO PREVENT ANYONE FROM GETTING HURT OR EVEN KILLED.

THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD A SPLIT SECOND TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO AS THE ROAD WAS CAUSING RAPID ACCELERATION. I SAW ONE CHANCE TO DRIVE OVER A DITCH AND INTO A YARD BY A HOUSE. I DID SO, FLYING OVER THE DITCH. IT TOOK THE LENGTH OF THE ENTIRE YARD (ABOUT AN ACRE OF PROPERTY) FOR THE TRUCK TO EVENTUALLY STOP ON ITS OWN. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED WHERE UPON QUICK ASSESSMENT MECHANIC SAID I HAD CORRODED BRAKE LINES AND RUPTURED BRAKE HOSE. THIS MOST CERTAINLY COYLD HAVE REAULTED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT AS THE END OF THIS ROAD IS FULL OF HOUSES AND SHARP BEND WITH MULTIPLE TELEPHONE POLES. I AM STILL AWAITING FULL REPORT ON VEHICLE BUT AM VERY UPSET GM HAS NEVER EVER ADVISED ME OF THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I MAINTAINED VEHICLE AT GM DEALER AND AM SINGLE OWNER. NEVER ONCE WAS I NOTIFIED. MY VEHICLE HAS A LITTLE OVER 100,300 MILES ON IT AND I WAS JUST STARTING DOWN THE HILL, ABOUT 10MPH BUT RAPIDLY THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHIN SPAN OF 2 HOUSES...RESULTING IN THE CRASH AND LOSS OF VEHICLE USE DUE TO NEED FOR TOWING. HAVE NO IDEA OFBSPEED AT THE DITCH AS I WASN'T ABLE TO LOOK DOWN .
A BRAKE LINE EXPLODED AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THERE IS SIGNIFICANT CORROSION ON MOST OF THE BRAKE LINES. IT SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS TO MAKE THEM OUT OF A MATERIAL THAT RUSTS COMPLETELY THROUGH AFTER 16 YEARS. WHY ARE THEY NOT USING STAINLESS STEEL?

I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS TRUCK AND THE BRAKES AREN'T WORKING. I HAVE A 2000 FORD RANGER THAT I BOUGHT NEW AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS , IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES. STEEL BRAKE LINE FAILURE WHERE LINES RUN BETWEEN FRAME AND FRONT DRIVERS SIDE CAB MOUNT. FROM THE DEALER THAT REPLACED THE LINES, THERE WAS A PIN HOLE IN THE LINE. I HAVE THE PARTS. WENT TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A 6 LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY AT 5:15PM. THE LIGHT CHANGED AND I BRAKED HARD FROM 50 MPH. JUST BEFORE THE TRUCK WAS TO STOP AT THE STOP LINE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK CONTINUED THROUGH THE RED LIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WHERE IT CAME TO A STOP. I WAS THE FIRST VEHICLE AT THE LIGHT, THERE WAS ONE CAR TO MY RIGHT IN THE RIGHT LANE AND TWO CARS SIDE BY SIDE AT THE JUG HANDLE TO MY RIGHT WAITING TO CROSS THE SIX LANE STATE HIGHWAY. IT WAS JUST DUMB LUCK THERE WASN'T A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. TWO SECONDS LATER THE CROSS TRAFFIC WOULD HAVE BROADSIDED ME AND ANOTHER SECOND LATER I WOULD HAVE BROADSIDED THE CROSS TRAFFIC. THIS STATE HIGHWAY IS INFAMOUS IN THE COUNTY FOR PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS OF THE FAILURE AND NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH. I MOVED THE TRUCK THROUGH THE RED LIGHT AND OVER TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND TESTED THE BRAKING. I HAD VERY MINIMAL BRAKING. I HAD DRIVEN THE VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED WITH TWO INCIDENTS OF HARD BRAKING WITH NO ISSUES. I WAS LESS THAN A 1/4 MILE FROM MY HOME. LIMPED HOME AT LOW SPEED WITH MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. HAD TRUCK TOWED FROM MY HOME TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER FOR REPAIR. RECOMMENDED REPLACING ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES DUE TO THE FAILURE AND RUST ON THE LINES. $1300 FOR COATED STEEL BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENTS PLUS TWO FRONT CALIPERS BECAUSE THE HEX ON THE BLEED SCREWS WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY. LAST SERVICED AT THE DEALER ON 4/8/14 AND ONLY DRIVEN 1763 MILES SINCE THAT SERVICE. ON THE INSPECTION REPORT THE DEALER HAD CHECKED THE YELLOW WARNING ON BRAKE SYSTEM AND JUST NOTED BRAKES HAVE RUST BUILDUP, NO LEAKS.

BACKED OUT OF GARAGE DRIVE WITH A DOWNWARD SLOPE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. STOPPED THE TRUCK USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE INCIDENT, NOT BEFORE. CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR, FLUID LEVEL WAS BELOW MINIMUM. UNDER THE VEHICLE, THE PROBLEM WAS APPARENT. NEAR THE ABS CONTROL UNIT IT LOOKED LIKE THE METAL LINE(S) HAD EXPLODED AND BRAKE FLUID WAS ALL OVER THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK AND DRIPPING DOWN THE FRAME RAIL. CHECKING THE VEHICLE, I FOUND ALL THE METAL BRAKE LINES, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE ABS UNIT, WERE BADLY RUSTED. TWO PROBLEMS: 1. THE FAILURE WAS CATASTROPHIC WITHOUT WARNING. WHILE THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE, IT PROVIDED NO PRIOR INDICATION OF PROBLEMS. BRAKE FLUID WAS OK PRIOR TO THE LINE FAILURE (NO BRAKE SERVICE LIGHT) AND THE BRAKE FLUID LOSS WAS THE RESULT OF THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE. THE BRAKE LINE, WEAKENED BY RUST, FAILED WITH THE INCREASED PRESSURE WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. 2. THERE WAS NO RESIDUAL OR BACK-UP BRAKING AVAILABLE EVEN WITH FULLY DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL. I'VE READ GM'S STATEMENT THAT THE BRAKE SERVICE LIGHT WOULD PROVIDE ADVANCE WARNING AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BRAKING (WITH LONGER STOPPING DISTANCES) SHOULD THERE BE FAILURES IN THE SYSTEM. UNFORTUNATELY, IN CATASTROPHIC BRAKE LINE FAILURES THERE WERE NO WARNINGS; THE WARNING LIGHT WAS DELAYED AFTER THE FACT. FROM AN ENGINEER'S PERSPECTIVE, DID THE METALLURGICAL CONTENT OF THE BRAKE LINES CHANGE IN 1999 OR PERHAPS THAT WAS WHEN THE ABS HOUSING CHANGED TO ALUMINUM? THE GALVANIC NATURE OF THE STEEL BRAKE LINES CONNECTING TO ALUMINUM IN THE PRESENCE OF SALT WATER WILL CERTAINLY RESULT IN THE INCREASED CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES. IT APPEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE FIRST BEING USED. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT NO ONE IS BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE REPAIRS AND/OR DEATHS, INJURY THAT IS BEING CAUSED BY THIS DEFECTIVE UNIT. IT'S OINDTALLED IN MILLIONS OF VEHICLES WORLDWIDE. I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND WENT TO STOP. PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, BRAKE FLUID ON THE GROUND. THE BRAKE LINE GOING TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL HAD RUSTED THROUGH ENOUGH THAT IT COULD NOT HOLD THE PRESSURE. THIS LINE I REPLACED MYSELF. AND FINALLY, TODAY, JANUARY 4, 2015, SAME THING. I START MY TRUCK, LET IT RUN FOR A FEW MINUTES. APPLY THE BRAKE TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE, PEDAL GOES DOWN TO THE FLOOR, BRAKE FLUID ON THE GROUND. THIS TIME IT'S THE BRAKE LINE FOR THE REAR BRAKES THAT HAS RUSTED OUT. I AM GOING TO HAVE THIS LINE AND ANY OTHER LINES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED, REPLACED AT MY LOCAL SHOP OR DEALER. WHEN BRAKING AT LOW SPEEDS THE ABS WOULD COME ON AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP ON SOLID DRY PAVEMENT. UPON MY INVESTIGATION WHAT I FOUND WAS THE FRONT HUB BEARING SEAL RUSTED OUT. THIS CAUSED ROAD SALTS/WATER TO ENTER THE HUB ASSY.. THIS THEN CREATED A RUST THAT GATHERED ON THE MAGNETIC ABS SPEED SENSOR . THE GM CAMPAIGN UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000 SAYS THIS IS DUE TO AN EXTERIOR RUST ISSUE. THIS IS NOT WHAT I FOUND ! WHEN THE GM PROCEDURE TO REPAIR THIS IS DONE , IT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT TIME BECAUSE THE RUSTED GREASE IS REMOVED FROM THE SENSOR TIP . I REPLACED BOTH FRONT HUB ASSY AND THIS IS NOW NOT A DEFECT . MY COMPLAINT IS THAT MANY HAVE REPORTED THAT , THIS IS A ONE TIME FIX, SO IT IS MY BELIEF GM SOLD THIS QUICK FIX TO NHTSA TO CHEAP OUT ON THE REAL FIX , WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE FRONT HUB ASSY AND USE SEALS WITH A RUST RESISTANT METAL . IT IS A LOT CHEAPER TO REMOVE THE RUST OFF THE SENSOR TIP , THAN TO FIX THE REAL CAUSE WHICH IS A RUSTED DAMAGED HUB ASSY DUE TO POOR METAL QUALITY OF THE GREASE/HUB BEARING SEAL. I WENT TO MOVE MY TRUCK FROM MY DRIVEWAY TO THE STREET. AS I WAS LEAVING THE DRIVEWAY I HAD TO PUSH AS HARD AS I COULD TO GET THE TRUCK TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE RESIDENCE AT AN EXTREMELY LOW SPEED. THE CONTACT REPLACED BOTH FRONT BRAKE LINES AND MAIN LINES HIMSELF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. ON 09/21/2014 AT APPROXIMATELY 1100 HOURS I HAD JUST COME OFF INTERSTATE 66 WEST.I WAS ENTERING A GATED COMMUNITY IN GAINESVILLE, VA. I STOPPED AT THE GUARD BOOTH TO SHOW I.D. I NOTICED SOME SMOKE AT THE GUARD BOOTH AND THOUGHT IT WAS THE CAR BEHIND ME. I SLOWLY ACCELERATED TO THE NEXT CROSS STREET. I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I ATTEMPTED TO PUMP THE BRAKES AND I STILL HAD NO BRAKING. I HAD TO UTILIZE MY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. THE SMOKE WAS FROM MY VEHICLE. IT WAS FROM THE BRAKE FLUID POURING OUT THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES ONTO THE EXHAUST. THE REASON I HAD COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WAS DUE TO BOTH LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER FAILING AT THE SAME TIME. THE LOCATION OF THE LINE FAILURE WAS ON THE FRAME RAIL CLOSER TO THE MASTER CYLINDER (NOT FURTHER DOWN BY THE DRIVER'S DOOR). I AM THANKFUL THAT THE BRAKE FAILURE DID NOT OCCUR AT HIGH SPEED AND OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I AM THANKFUL THAT THERE WERE NO PEDESTRIANS PRESENT THAT I HAD TO BRAKE FOR AND NO PROPERTY DAMAGE. I PERSONALLY INSPECTED THE BRAKE LINES AFTER THE INCIDENT AND HAVE FOUND THE CORROSION EXCESSIVE. I HAVE ORDERED A KIT TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES BECAUSE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. AFTER CHECKING THE MASTER CYLINDER AND SEEING IT ALMOST EMPTY I TOWED THE TRUCK HOME. TO MY SURPRISE WHEN LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK, I FIND A LEAKING BRAKE LINE. THEN I START TO NOTICE ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH FROM THE FRONT CALIPERS TO THE REAR. THIS TRUCK IS ONLY 14 YEARS OLD WHICH TELLS ME THE MATERIALS USED TO MANUFACTURE THESE BRAKE LINES WERE NOT ADEQUATE. THE SPEED AT WHICH THEY HAVE RUSTED IS RIDICULOUS FOR A 14 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I WATCHED MULTIPLE NEWS CHANNELS HAVE REPORTED ON THIS ISSUE BUT GM REFUSES TO ADMIT THEIR FAULT. HE SAID IT WOULD COST AROUND 1200 TO 1400 DOLLARS TO REPAIR THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE. LAST FALL I WAS TOWING MY CAMPER HOME AND THE BRAKE BUSTED ON THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND LEAVING ME WITH NO BRAKES. ONCE AGAIN I WAS LUCKY AND HAD NO ACCIDENT. LUCKILY THERE WAS NOBODY AT THE CROSSROAD AND I WENT PAST IT AND MANAGED TO COME TO A STOP DOWN THE ROAD. MY MECHANIC FOUND THAT A RUSTED BRAKE LINE HAD BURST NEAR THE PROPORTIONING VALVE LOCATED UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR. ALL THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED AND NEEDED REPLACED. I FOUND THROUGH RESEARCH THAT THIS A VERY COMMON EVENT IN THESE VEHICLES. THE OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE SHOULD AT LEAST BE WARNED BEFORE SERIOUS INJURIES OR WORSE SINCE THERE ARE STILL MANY ON THE ROADS. THIS POOR DESIGN AND USE OF INFERIOR MATERIALS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF VEHICLE SAFETY. *TR

DRIVING HOME FROM A MORNING OF SHOPPING, I WENT TO STOP TO MAKE A TURN INTO WALGREEN'S PARKING LOT WHEN I NOTICED THE TRUCK WAS DIFFICULT TO STOP.. I PROCEEDED TO MAKE A PURCHASE AT WALGREEN'S, BUT WHEN I WAS FINISHED I DECIDED TO LOOK UNDER THE HOOD. I COULD SMELL AN ODOR THAT SMELLED LIKE BRAKE FLUID, BUT WASN'T SURE BECAUSE THE CONTAINER WAS STILL AT AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL. UPON ARRIVING AT HOME, I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AGAIN, AND NOTICED BRAKE FLUID ON THE EXHAUST PIPE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. I COULD SEE A BREAK IN THE BRAKE LINE ABOVE THE EXHAUST PIPE AND NOTICED VAPORS COMING OFF THE PIPE. THE TRUCK HAS ONLY 60,000 MILES ON, SO I WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIALS USED FOR INSURING PEOPLE'S LIVES WITH THESE INFERIOR LINES. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP, AND WAS TOLD THE COST COULD BE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 1800 DOLLARS. IS THIS WHERE OUR QUALITY MANUFACTURING HAS TAKEN US? REPLACED FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS. WHEN I TRIED TO GET BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, AND BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. I BRAKE LINE WAS BADLY CORRODED AND BROKE THROUGH. I HAD ZERO BRAKING ABILITY AND HAD TO BACK THE TRUCK OUT OF THE GARAGE USING ONLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF BROKEN BRAKE LINES DUE TO BAD CORROSION ON THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST INCIDENT ALSO RESULTED IN A BROKEN, BADLY CORRODED BRAKE LINE BREAKING AND LEAKING FLUID, AND RESULTED IN ZERO BRAKING ABILITY. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED FOR REPAIR THAT TIME. NOT SURE HOW IM GOING TO GET IT FIXED THIS TIME. ALL REMAINING BRAKE LINES ARE ALSO BADLY RUSTED AND ARE SURE TO BRAKE SHORTLY IF NOT REPLACED. THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE TRUCK IS ALSO SEVERELY RUSTED TO A POINT THAT APPEARS THAT THE TRUCK IS 100+ YEARS OLD. THE FRAME IS NEARLY TO THE POINT OF BEING RUSTED THROUGH. THESE ARE SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS WITH THESE TRUCKS THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY CHEVROLET. AFTER DRIVING FOR AROUND 30 MILES I WAS PULLING UP TO THE GARAGE AT HOME SLOWING DOWN WHEN THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ENGAGED AT ABOUT 3 MILES PER HOUR. IN A PANIC, THE TRUCK KEPT MOVING WITHOUT STOPPING FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 FEET, THEN I PUT THE TRUCK IN PARK AND IT STOPPED. WITHOUT DOING THAT I WOULD HAVE HIT MY GARAGE DOOR, MISSING THE DOOR BY INCHES. THIS ISSUE IS STILL ONGOING AS OF 8/18/13. IN ORDER TO STOP, THE BRAKES HAVE TO BE PUMPED AT ALL TIMES WHEN TRYING TO STOP. THE ANTI-LOCK BAKE SYSTEM ACTIVATES AT 3 TO 4 MILES PER HOUR ALL THE TIME IF NOT PUMPED. I AM A MECHANIC AND STARTED SEARCHING THE INTERNET TO SEE WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM. UPON MY FINDING THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AS MINE. I OWN A YEAR 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 PICKUP TRUCK. ON APRIL 15, 2013, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM THE NEAREST VILLAGE, I LOST ALL POWER IN MY BRAKES. THE TRUCK WAS GOING DOWNHILL AND AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN SPEED. I WAS QUICKLY OVERTAKING A SLOWER PASSENGER CAR AHEAD OF ME, SO I HAD TO VEER OFF THE ROAD ONTO THE SHOULDER AND INTO A ROUGH RAVINE. EVENTUALLY I SLOWED TO A STOP. I GOT OUT AND EXAMINED THE BRAKE FLUID AND FOUND IT TO BE LESS THAN THE MINIMUM LEVEL. I ALSO SAW FLUID LEAKING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE REAR AXIAL. SINCE THE INCIDENT HAPPEN IN THE EVENING, I CALLED A FRIEND WHO HELPED ME BRING THE TRUCK TO MY HOME. THE FOLLOWING DAY I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE FAILED (RUSTED THROUGH) REAR BRAKE LINE. THE OTHER REAR BAKE LINES WERE EXTREMELY RUSTED AND AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN, I HAD THEM ALL REPLACED. THE COST OF THE REPAIR WAS $1625. THE TRUCK HAD APPROXIMATELY 99,000 MILES AT THE TIME OF REPAIR AND WAS GARAGED DURING WINTER MONTHS SINCE IT IS PRIMARILY A FARM VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKE LINE WEAR AND RUST IS A SAFETY HAZARD SINCE THE TRUCK LOST ALL BRAKE POWER AND WAS INCREASING IN SPEED EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL FULLY ENGAGED. ONLY BY STEERING OFF THE ROAD AND DRIVING UP AN ELEVATED ROAD EMBANKMENT WAS I ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK SAFELY. *TR

BRAKE FAILURE ON INTERSTATE 65 SB WHEN ATTEMPTING A PANIC STOP. A SEMI-TRUCK TRAILER BLEW A TIRE WHICH SENT SHRAPNEL/DEBRIS FLYING IN THE AIR. TRAFFIC IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE TRUCK AND DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME PANICKED AND "SLAMMED" ON THEIR BRAKES TO AVOID THE FLYING OBJECTS. IN TURN, I HAD TO FULLY APPLY MY BRAKES TO THE POINT OF ABS INTERVENTION. THERE WAS ONE TO THREE CYCLES OF THE ABS BEFORE I LOST ALL BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE. AT THIS POINT I HAD TO SWERVE ONTO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID REAR ENDING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF ME. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM SHOWS THAT ONE OF THE THREE METAL BRAKE LINES RUNNING ALONG THE DRIVERS SIDE FRAME RAIL, UNDER THE CAB RUPTURED (HENCE LOSS OF PEDAL PRESSURE). THIS FAILURE OCCURRED WHERE THE BRAKE LINES TRANSITION FROM ABOVE THE FRAME RAIL TO ALONG SIDE THE FRAME RAIL. ALL THREE BRAKE LINES IN THIS AREA ARE CORRODED BUT IT IS DIFFICULT TO VISUALLY TELL THE SEVERITY OF THE CORROSION DUE TO A SPIRAL SHIELDING THAT IS WRAPPED AROUND THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF BRAKE LINE. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED AS A RESULT OF THIS FAILURE; HOWEVER HAD THE CIRCUMSTANCES BEEN SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT, THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT. *TR

DURING A SCHEDULED MAINT./REPAIR VISIT AT A MAJOR CHEVY DEALERSHIP, THEY ADVISED THE SHOCK ABSORBERS COULDN'T BE REPLACED; THE UPPER MOUNTS FOR BOTH REAR SHOCKS WERE GONE. THE DEALER SUGGESTED I TAKE THE TRUCK TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP FOR THE NEEDED RESTORATION WORK, THEN RETURN. I LATER INSPECTED THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF MY TRUCK AND FOUND EXTENSIVE ROT AND RUST ON MAJOR FRAME STRUCTURES. BOTH UPPER SHOCK MOUNTS APPEAR TO HAVE ROTTED AWAY. BOTH FRAME SPREADER TUBES, TO WHICH THE UPPER SHOCK MOUNTS AND THE REAR FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAP ARE ATTACHED, HAVE LOST MOST OF THEIR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. I ALSO NOTED MOST MAIN FASTENER BOLTS APPEAR TO HAVE LOST THEIR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY,DUE TO ROT AND RUST. IN DECEMBER OF 2009, I REPLACED THE FUEL STRAPS. ONE BRAKE LINE FAILED (ROTTED OPEN), CAUSING BRAKE LOSS, AS I WAS DEPARTING THE SERVICE VISIT. ALL THE BRAKE LINES HAD DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT REPLACEMENT WAS NECESSARY. IN JULY OF 2011, I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR ROTTED OUT BUMPER. I AM NOW SEEING ROT AND RUST BREAKING THROUGH THE FRONT BUMPER OF MY TRUCK. IN LIGHT OF THE MAJOR RUST AND STRUCTURAL FAILURES I HAVE EXPERIENCED RECENTLY, I STARTED RESEARCHING NHTSA'S DATA BASE TO SEE IF OTHERS WERE EXPERIENCING THESE ISSUES WITH THEIR SILVERADO, OR IF THIS WAS AN ANOMALY. I WAS QUITE STARTLED TO FIND NUMEROUS REPORTS BEING CITED FOR IDENTICAL PROBLEMS AND FAILURES FOR THIS VEHICLE. TWO ISSUES CONCERN ME: FIRST, MAJOR RUST & ROT HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THIS MODEL AND LATER ONES FOR OVER A PERIOD OF 10-13 YEARS. SECOND, DO, OR SHOULD SERVICE SHOPS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO ADVISE WHEN SIGNS OF MAJOR DETERIORATION OCCUR, SO WE CAN MAKE REPAIR/INVESTMENT CHOICES? I'VE OWNED SEVERAL TRUCKS, KEEP THEM FOR 8-10 YEARS, THEN REPLACE THEM. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT BOTH OF THE BRAKE LINES AND CABLES WERE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO THE HOT CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE DEFECTIVE FUEL LINE IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT REPAIR, DUE TO HAVING TO REMOVE THE BED/CAB FOR REPLACEMENT AND ACCESS TO IT. THE FUEL AND BRAKE LINES ARE IMPROPERLY ROUTED FROM THE FACTORY, CAUSING PREMATURE FAILURE DUE TO CORROSION AND SALT DAMAGE. IN MY OPINION, THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND THIS INHERENTLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM RECTIFIED. THE BRAKE LINES ON THIS SAME TRUCK FAILED FROM CORROSION TWO YEARS AGO. PRIOR TO THIS, I NEVER HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKES PREVIOUSLY WERE STRONG AND REQUIRED A SLIGHT PUSH. I DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND FOUND THAT STOPPING REQUIRED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO BE PRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO THE SAME SHOP AND ASKED THE SHOP TO TAKE A LOOK. THE SHOP FOUND THAT ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES WAS LEAKING FLUID (UNDER DRIVER SIDE) AND EXPLAINED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES LOOKED RUSTED. THIS TRUCK PRIMARILY WAS USED BY A HIGHWAY DEPT OUTSIDE OF BUFFALO, NY (ROAD SALT/RUST BELT GEOGRAPHIC AREA) - THE EXPOSURE TO AMOUNTS OF ROAD SALT/ICE-MELTING CHEMICALS MAY HAVE BEEN A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN TOWED TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND I AM WAITING TO HEAR BACK ABOUT THE REPAIR OPTIONS. IN MY 40 YEARS OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED OR EVEN HEARD OF BRAKE BACKING PLATES RUSTING THROUGH DURING THE LIFE OF A 12 YEAR OLD VEHICLE (LET ALONE TWICE) AND, HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED (OR HEARD OF) ALL BRAKE LINES ON A VEHICLE RUSTING THROUGH TO THE POINT WHERE THEY ALL NEED TO BE REPLACED. FOUND BRAKE FLUID LEAKING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRAME RAIL A COUPLE FEET BEHIND THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. WITH PLENTY OF LEVEL SHOULDER TO TEST - I WENT UP AND BACK ABOUT 5 MPH TO SEE IF I HAD ANY BRAKES AT ALL AND DETERMINED THERE WERE NONE.. I WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND ENDED UP PAYING $973 TO HAVE THE 2 BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS UNIT, AND THE 2 LINES FROM THE ABS UNIT TO THE FRONT WHEEL REPLACED. I STILL NEED TO HAVE THE REAR LINES REPLACED ALTHOUGH THE MECHANIC SAID THEY LOOKED OK. I OWN A 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO EXT. CAB. I'M RETIRED AND DRIVE THE TRUCK ABOUT 1000 MILES A YEAR OR SO. IN JANUARY 2004 TO PASS THE NEW YORK STATE INSPECTION I NEEDED TO HAVE THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE BRAKE ASSEMBLY FROM THE AXLE BEARING'S OUT REPLACED. AT THE TIME I HAD BETWEEN 6000 AND 7000 MILES ON THE TRUCK. THE COST WAS ALMOST $800.00 NOW ON MAY 4 2012 WITH 23,400 MILES ON THE TRUCK, I NEEDED TO HAVE THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS REPLACED, COST APPROXIMATELY $400.00! I HAD BOTH REPAIRS DONE BY A QUALIFIED ACE MECHANIC, WHO ALSO IS A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY SO HE CAN BE TRUSTED! I ALSO WANT TO ADD THERE IS NOT A SPECK OF RUST ON ANY OF THE BODY PANELS, AND THE UNDER CARRIAGE IS RINSED FREQUENTLY. THIS TRUCK IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 90,000.

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN SHE WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES ON OUR 2000 CHEVY PICKUP WHEN THE BRAKE LINE ON THE TRUCK RUPTURED AND SHE COULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. SHE THEN REARENDED THE JEEP IN FRONT OF HER CAUSING DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH YOU IN APPROXIMATELY 2008/09. AT 20 MPH THERE ARE ALMOST NO BRAKES (NOT ABS BRAKES, NO BRAKES). I PULLED THE FUSE FOR THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM AND THE PROBLEM ENDED. I HEARD NOTHING BACK FROM YOU. FRIENDS WHO DROVE MY TRUCK COMPLAINED OF EXCESSIVELY SOFT BRAKES SINCE IT WAS NEW. I WAS CHECKING YOUR WEBSITE 3 DAYS AGO WHEN I CAME ACROSS RECALL #GM05068, NHTSA 05V379000. I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT RECALL REPAIRS. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE RECALL HAD BEEN DONE ON MY VEHICLE ON 02-17-06. THEY SAID THEY ARE ONLY AUTHORIZED TO DO THE RECALL REPAIRS ONCE. I ASSUME THIS WAS DONE WHEN I HAD THE VEHICLE IN FOR OTHER ISSUES, AS I HAD NO BRAKE PROBLEMS AT THE TIME. SO APPROXIMATELY 2 YRS AFTER THE RECALL SERVICE WAS DONE THE PROBLEM PRESENTED ITSELF. I CALLED GM TODAY (REF # 71-106-286-2771) THEY SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ON THE RECALL BUT IT IS "POSSIBLE" THEY MAY BE ABLE TO GIVE SOME ASSISTANCE UNDER ANOTHER PROGRAM IF I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND PAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS "OF A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT". I WAS ALREADY TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE FIX WOULD COST BETWEEN $200-350.00, AND DIAGNOSIS IS LIKELY TO ADD ANOTHER 100.00, WITH NO ASSURANCE OF ANY REIMBURSEMENT. MY PROBLEM IS THREE FOLD: THE ORIGINAL FIX DID NOT ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM IS A DESIGN WHICH DIRECTLY IMPACTS SAFETY AND APPEARS TO RE-OCCUR RANDOMLY EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS, A REAL FIX MUST HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED SINCE TRUCKS AFTER 2002 ARE NOT SIMILARLY AFFECTED. FOR MY WIFE'S SAFETY I HAVE CHOSEN TO PULL THE FUSE AND DISABLE THE ABS SYSTEM, RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO PRE-ABS STATUS, AND THE BRAKES WORK FINE. THE CALIPERS AND ROTORS HAVE BEEN REGULARLY MAINTAINED. SHOULDN'T AN ABS SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNED TO FAIL BACK TO REGULAR BRAKES RATHER THAN ALMOST NO BRAKES?
