The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving with cargo, the cables fractured, and the items in the bed of the truck shifted to the tailgate and cause the tailgate to become inoperable. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 04V129000 (Structure) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who declined to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 174,000 Parts distribution disconnect.

HAD TO DISCONNECT THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SO I COULD STOP. WHEN DRIVING SLOW AND PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE PEDAL IS SOLID AND DOES NOT MOVE. VERY DANGEROUS. CANNOT STOP THE VEHICLE AT ALL. BRAKE LINES ROTTED OUT. HAS TO REPLACE. TRANSMISSION LINES ROTTED OUT. HAD TO REPLACE. TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ROTTED OUT. HAD TO REPLACE. FUEL LINES ARE ROTTING OUT. NOT REPLACED YET. DRIVE SHAFT IS QUESTIONABLE. SEVERELY RUSTED. REAR BACKING PLATES ROTTED OFF, NO MORE PARKING - EMERGENCY BRAKE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT. REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTER MANY TIMES WITH NO RESULTS. ENGINE LEAKS OIL. LOOSING COOLANT, POSSIBLE BURNING IT. FUEL MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE. BODY RUSTED OUT. ROCKER PANELS ARE GONE. CAB CORNERS ARE GONE. REAR BUMPER IS GONE. PUTTING THE SPARE TIRE UNDERNEATH IS A STUPID IDEA. THE COST TO REPLACE THESE PARTS IS TOO EXPENSIVE. FOR WHAT THESE VEHICLES COST NEW ALL OF THESE PARTS SHOULD BE MADE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL OR USE PLASTIC FOR THE FUEL LINES AND BRAKE LINES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEING RELATED TO A POLLUTION CONTROL DEVICE SHOULD BE ENTIRE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THESE PARTS AND WHATEVER IS UPSTREAM THAT CAUSED THE POLLUTION CONTROL PART TO FAIL SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER IN PERPETUITY. ANTI LOCK BRAKES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM ALL CARS. EXTREME RUST ON UNDER CARRAGE OF VEHICLE. BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT CAUSING BRAKE FAILURE FRAME RUSTED OUT AT REAR LEAF SPRINGS AND FRAME RAIL CROSS MEMBERS. REAR SHOCK HANGERS RUSTED OFF VEHICLE. FRAME RUSTED SO BAD THAT IT PROHIBITS TOUNG OF ANY TYPE OF TRAILER. TOYOTA HAD SAME PROBLEM AND THEY HAD TO DO A RECALL SO WHY HAS GM NOT HAD TO DO THE SAME THING. IT IS A VERY LARGE SAFETY ISSUE AFFECTING MANY VEHICLES ON THE HWY TODAY.

THIS TRUCK HAS HAD ISSUES SINCE I FIRST PURCHASED IT. BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP THE TRUCK IN A SAFE DISTANCE WHICH ENDED UP WITH ME HAVING AN ACCIDENT WITH IT. THE BRAKE LINE RUSTED OUT AFTER LESS THAN 100,000 MILES AND NEEDED TO REPLACE THEM ALL. NOW WITH 173,000 MILES THE GAS LINES ARE LEAKING AND THE FRAME IS RUSTED SO BAD THAT IT CANNOT BE PUT UP ON A LIFT TO FIX THE BRAKE LINES.

IN OCTOBER 2014 WENT TO HAVE ANNUAL STATE INSPECTION TO BE PERFORMED. WAS REJECTED DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON FRAME. AS TRUCK WAS LIFTED THE FRAME WAS BENDING. INSPECTION STATION SAID TRUCK WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. NO RUST IN WHEEL WELLS, TAILGATE, BUMPERS. TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 91,500 MILES DRIVEN. APPEARANCE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HAVE REPORTED TO GMAC (CASE # 71-1508539581)AND THEY HAVE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO REPLACE FRAME. DO NOT DRIVE IT IN SALT WATER AND DO NOT TRAILER ANY BOATS OR OTHER NEAR SALT WATER. HAVE BEEN WITHOUT VEHICLE FOR OVER A YEAR. WAS TOLD THAT THIS TRUCK IF DRIVEN IS A DANGER TO DRIVE: HAVE REVIEWED YOUR COMPLAINTS FOR THIS VINTAGE VEHICLE AND MANY COMPLAINTANTS WONDER WHY SOMETHING HASN'T BEEN DONE TO REMEDY THIS APPARENT INFERIOR MATERIAL USED IN THESE TRUCKS OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS IN MANUFACTURING. 'THE PADS RUSTED TO THE ROTORS, DESTROYING THE ROTORS. I HAD TO HAVE ALL THE ROTORS AND PADS REPLACED. SINCE THEN HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE PADS AND ROTORS TWO MORE TIMES. I'VE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR CALIPERS AND THE BACKING PLATES AT LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE ABS SENSORS AND GREASE BOOT S ON THE FRONT AXELS. REPLACED THE UNIVERSAL JOINT, THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SWITCHES TWICE, THE POWER WINDOW MECHANISMS, THE TAIL GATE STRAPS AND THE LEVER--WHICH ISN'T WORKING RIGHT AGAIN, THE GAS TANK STRAP, RUSTY FUEL LINES AND BRAKE LINES, AND THE DIFFERENTIAL COVER THAT RUSTED OUT. DURING A SCHEDULED MAINT./REPAIR VISIT AT A MAJOR CHEVY DEALERSHIP, THEY ADVISED THE SHOCK ABSORBERS COULDN'T BE REPLACED; THE UPPER MOUNTS FOR BOTH REAR SHOCKS WERE GONE. THE DEALER SUGGESTED I TAKE THE TRUCK TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP FOR THE NEEDED RESTORATION WORK, THEN RETURN. I LATER INSPECTED THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF MY TRUCK AND FOUND EXTENSIVE ROT AND RUST ON MAJOR FRAME STRUCTURES. BOTH UPPER SHOCK MOUNTS APPEAR TO HAVE ROTTED AWAY. BOTH FRAME SPREADER TUBES, TO WHICH THE UPPER SHOCK MOUNTS AND THE REAR FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAP ARE ATTACHED, HAVE LOST MOST OF THEIR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. I ALSO NOTED MOST MAIN FASTENER BOLTS APPEAR TO HAVE LOST THEIR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY,DUE TO ROT AND RUST. IN DECEMBER OF 2009, I REPLACED THE FUEL STRAPS. ONE BRAKE LINE FAILED (ROTTED OPEN), CAUSING BRAKE LOSS, AS I WAS DEPARTING THE SERVICE VISIT. ALL THE BRAKE LINES HAD DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT REPLACEMENT WAS NECESSARY. IN JULY OF 2011, I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR ROTTED OUT BUMPER. I AM NOW SEEING ROT AND RUST BREAKING THROUGH THE FRONT BUMPER OF MY TRUCK. IN LIGHT OF THE MAJOR RUST AND STRUCTURAL FAILURES I HAVE EXPERIENCED RECENTLY, I STARTED RESEARCHING NHTSA'S DATA BASE TO SEE IF OTHERS WERE EXPERIENCING THESE ISSUES WITH THEIR SILVERADO, OR IF THIS WAS AN ANOMALY. I WAS QUITE STARTLED TO FIND NUMEROUS REPORTS BEING CITED FOR IDENTICAL PROBLEMS AND FAILURES FOR THIS VEHICLE. TWO ISSUES CONCERN ME: FIRST, MAJOR RUST & ROT HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THIS MODEL AND LATER ONES FOR OVER A PERIOD OF 10-13 YEARS. SECOND, DO, OR SHOULD SERVICE SHOPS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO ADVISE WHEN SIGNS OF MAJOR DETERIORATION OCCUR, SO WE CAN MAKE REPAIR/INVESTMENT CHOICES? I'VE OWNED SEVERAL TRUCKS, KEEP THEM FOR 8-10 YEARS, THEN REPLACE THEM. FAST FORWARD 8-20-12 WHEN WORKING ON THE FRONT BRAKE LINES BECAUSE THEY RUSTED OUT TOO. I HAD THE TRUCK UP ON JACK STANDS. CAME HOME TO FIND THE FRONT END ON THE GROUND. CORNER PANELS RUSTING ALONG WITH BOTH REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLIES AND BRAKE DUST COVERS HAVE RUSTED OFF. SPARE TIRE CABLE AND MECHANICAL MECHANISM TO LOWER AND RAISE THE TIRE ARE RUSTED. SHACKLE MOUNTS ON BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT REAR ARE ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME AND ARE IN DANGER OF COMING OFF. HAD TO WELD A BRACE ON BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT REAR FRAME TO PREVENT FAILURE IN THAT AREA SO THAT VEHICLE IS SOMEWHAT SAFE TO DRIVE. SO NOW THAT TRUCK REMAIN STANDARD AS BEFORE THEIR HEAD LIGHTS ON DIM ARE HIGHER THEN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR IN THE CARS THEREFORE CAUSING BLINDNESS TO THE CAR DRIVER. THE GOV. SHOULD SET A MAX. HEIGHT FOR HEADLIGHTS TO BE OFF THE ROAD WHEN THE VEHICLE IS SITTING ON A LEVEL SURFACE. AND THEN THE LAW ALLOWS SOME OF THESE TRUCK OWNERS TO JACK THEIR UNIT UP EVEN HIGHER THAN STANDARD TO WHERE THE HEADLIGHTS OR EVEN ABOVE THE ROOF OF THE CARS AND IT VERY DANGEROUS AT NIGHT WHEN YOU MEET ONE COMING OR ONE PULLS UP BEHIND YOU. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. EVER SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE ENGINE HAS BEEN MAKING A STRANGE NOISE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY FOUND NO FAILURES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PISTONS STRIKING AGAINST THE METAL BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE PISTONS AND THE CYLINDER. THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE ISSUE. THE MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE HAS EXCEEDED THE WARRANTY; THEREFORE, THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT ASSIST. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A SLACK IN THE REAR, WHICH COULD BE REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE YOKE WITH A NICKEL PLATED COVER. THE REPAIR WAS NOT PERFORMED BECAUSE THE CONTACT FEELS AS IF THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,350.
