The emergency brake does not work properly. It automatically comes on while I am driving almost causing me to have a accident. Please, fix!!!!
ABS kicks in constantly at low speeds in dry conditions. This causes longer stopping distances. The ABS grinds or vibrates interfering with normal braking situations. Many near miss collisions at low speeds. The manufacturer should be responsible and replace all the ABS sensors. I purchased this truck brand new in 2002.

IN JULY OF 2018, MY 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HAD MAJOR BRAKE FAILURE AS I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH APPROACHING A RED LIGHT. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES, IT WENT TOTALLY TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP, BLOWING RIGHT THROUGH RED LIGHT. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THE MY BRAKE LINE RUSTED THROUGH, AND ALL THE BRAKES LINES, AS WELL AS THE FUEL LINE IS TOTALLY RUSTED. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON IN THIS CHEVROLET / GM MODEL ERA. HE SAID IF ALL HE WERE TO DO IS REPLACE BRAKE LINES IN THIS 1999 TO 2006 ERA, IT WAS ENOUGH TO KEEP HIS BUSINESS BOOMING. WHAT SHOCKING STRUCK ME IS THAT HE TOLD ME THEY ALL FAIL UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR, ALONG THE FRAME, BEFORE THE ABS MODULE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THERE IS A MAJOR SAFETY DESIGN FLAW IN THE 1999-2002 BRAKE SYSTEM. THE FRONT TIRES THROUGH THE SALT AND GRIME FROM THE ROADS ONTO THE BRAKE LINES WHERE CHEVROLET HAS LOCATED THEM IN THE DESIGN. THIS CAUSES THE BRAKE LINES TO CORRODE AND BURST DURING DRIVING. MINE HAVE NOW BURST FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THE LAST 5 YEARS. THE FIRST TIME IN 2013 I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35-40 MPH WHEN I WENT TO MAKE A RH TURN AND THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. THIS TIME I HAD WENT TO A LOCAL GAS STATION AND WAS ON THE WAY HOME WHEN I STOPPED TO TALK TO A NEIGHBOR AND ONCE AGAIN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I DRIVE THE TRUCK VERY LITTLE SO I HAVE ONLY PUT JUST OVER 17,000 MILES ON THE NEW SET OF BRAKE LINES THAT I HAD INSTALLED BY A CHEVROLET DEALER IN 2013. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN INDIANA, JUST NORTH OF LOUISVILLE, KY SO OUR WINTERS ARE NOT THAT HARSH, SO THE AMOUNT OF SALT FROM ROADS IS PRETTY LIMITED. I HAVE TALKED WITH OTHER CHEVROLET SILVERADO, YUKON AND SUBURBAN OWNERS AND THEY ALL SHARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES WITH THEIR BRAKE LINES. I HAVE WENT TO YOUTUBE TO SEE HOW TO MAKE THE REPAIRS MYSELF AND HAVE SEEN COUNTLESS VIDEOS ON INDIVIDUALS REPAIRING THEIR BRAKES BECAUSE OF THE CORROSION AND THE BRAKE LINES BURSTING. COME ON NHTSB WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON BEFORE YOU ISSUE A RECALL, SOMEONE TO DIE OR BE PERMANENTLY DISABLED! AFTER HAVING VEHICLE TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP I WAS NOTIFIED BY THE REPAIR SHOP THAT THE BRAKE LINES HAD COMPLETED CORRODED. TOTAL REPAIR SHOP COST TO REPLACE ALL BRAKE LINES WAS $810.36. I'VE HAD CARS LONGER THIS IN MY 40+ YEARS OF DRIVING ANY NEVER HAD A BRAKE LINE FAIL FROM RUST. I WOULD HAVE LIKED A HEADS UP ON THIS ISSUE AS I'VE SEEN IT TO BE A PROBLEM IN MULTIPLE YEARS. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR WITH HARDLY ANY BRAKES.I HAD TO GO ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD TO AVOID MAJOR CRASH . WAS VERY SHOCKED AND HEART WAS RACING . I NEVER HAD THAT HAPPEN BEFORE IN ALL THE YEARS I HAVE BEEN DRIVING. I MANAGED TO MAKE IT HOME BY USING LOWER GEARS AND EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. WHEN I FINALLY GOT HOME I LOOKED TO SEE WHAT THE HECK WAS GOING ON AND SAW THAT MY BRAKE LINES HAD CORRODED THRU AND THE FLUID WAS COMING OUT. I WENT ON LINE TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM AND SAW THERE WERE MANY, MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I CALLED SEVERAL PLACES AND THE COST TO REPLACE ALL MY BRAKE LINES WAS AROUND 1200 - 1700. I ENDED UP GETTING THEM REPLACED FOR $1600. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I HAVE OWED MANY VEHICHLES OVER THE YEARS IN THIS SAME AREA AND HAVE NEVER EVER HAD TO REPLACE A BRAKE LINE. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A MAJOR RECALL BEFORE ANYONE DIES. THERE MUST BE FAULTY METAL BEING USED IN THESE AND NEEDS TO BE STAINLESS STEEL. I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE $1600 I HAD TO SPEND ON THESE FAULTY BRAKE LINES. THEY NEED TO DO A RECALL OR LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND REIMBURSE THEM FOR THE REPAIRS.

AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP, RUNNING INTERSECTIONS AND PARKING SPOTS. CAUSING NEAR ACCIDENTS. II LEARNED THIS WAS RELATED TO BRAKE ANTILOCK SYSTEM. DEALER SAID THEY DONE THE RECALL PROCEDURE TO CLEAN SENSORS AND AVOIDED ANY FURTHER CONCERNE EXPRESSED. I CHECKED WITH OTHER DEALERS WHO HAD THE SAME DENIAL REACTION, THE INITIAL DEALER HAD DONE CHECKS TO ALL CHASIS AND COMPONANT CHECKS, I NOTICED A MILD GROWL WHEN IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE BUT DROVE WELL OTHERWISE. I INSPECTED THE WHEEL SENSORS AND THEY WERE CLEAN I LEARNED THE RELUCTOR RING WHICH TRIGGERS THE SENSORS ARE WITHIN THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS I HAD ONE OIL SERVICE DONE BY ANOTHER GARAGE WHO DID A 21 POINT CHECK BUT NEGLECTED TO TELL ME OF THE APPARENT WEAR. AFTER ABOUT FIFTEEN MONTHS THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL BEARING BEGAN TO FAIL WHILE DRIVING CAUSING A EXTREME GROWL, I THEN HAD IT CHECKED BY A SERVICE GARAGE WHO CLEARLY IDENIFIED THE EVIDENT WEAR ON BOTH FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS, I HAD THE BEARINGS BOTH CHANGED ALONG WITH A LOWER BALL JOINT ALONG WITH BOTH FRONT AXLE SHAFTS, DUE TO MILD LEAKING BOOTS. THIS THEM STOPPED THE HARD PEDDLE AND BRAKE FAILURE WHEN STOPPING. THE DEALER KNEW OF THE WEAR AND IGNORED THE DANGER. THE DEALER SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL A VEHICLE IN THIS CONDITION . THE TRUCK DOES DRIVE WELL NOW. BUT I STILL HAVE A VERY MILD GROWL IN THE LEFT FRONT,BUT WITH THE AXLES NEW THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE DRIVE CASE, ONLY WHEN IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. ( WHILE THE BRAKE PROBLEM EXISTED I ADJUSTED MY DRIVING PRACTICE AND LIMITED MY USE OF VEHICLE.)

EXCESSIVE CORROSION ON BRAKE AND FUEL LINES. HAD A METAL LINE BLOW OUT NEAR REAR DRIVER SIDE WHEEL CAUSING DRIVER TO HAVE TO USE TRANSMISSION AND HOLDING PARKING BRAKE RELEASE HANDLE WHILE USING E-BRAKE WHILE STEERING WITH ONE HAND. UPON SPLICING IN A SECTION OF REPLACEMENT TUBING, I NOTICED THE FUEL RETURN LINE FROM THE ENGINE TO THE TANK IS CORRODED SEVERELY TOO. I HAD A SECTION OF FUEL LINE FALL APART UPON REPLACING A FUEL FILTER AND SPLICED IN A RUBBER FUEL HOSE WITH CLAMPS TO GET A FUEL FILTER REPLACED. WHEN THE FUEL LINES RUPTURE, THERE IS A CHANCE OF FIRE FROM THE EXHAUST OR HOT BRAKE DRUMS. WAS ADVISED BY MECHANIC THAT I NEED TO SELL TRUCK AS IT HAS 18-24 MONTHS LEFT WITHOUT PROPER AND EXPENSIVE REPAIRS BEING MADE. RARELY GETS UNDERBODY WASH AS A QUALITY WASH IS FAR AWAY AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE RUST IS PROBABLY HOLDING IT TOGETHER AND ADVISED NOT TO KNOCK OFF ANY MORE RUST AS IT WOULD ACCELERATE FURTHER CORROSION. WAS ADVISED A WASTE OF TIME TO USE RUST REFORMER OR UNDERCOATING. I NOTICED THIS STATIONARY AS THE VEVICLE WAS MAKING SQUEAKING SOUNDS FROM THE REAR AXLE HUB ON DRIVER SIDE (SAME LINE THAT BLEW) AND FIGURED HANGING CALIPER SO I DID A FULL BRAKE PEDAL PRESS AND FELT THE PEDAL GET SPONGY AND DROP ANOTHER 1" TOWARD FLOOR. I OPENED DOOR, HUNG OUT LOOKING UNDER TRUCK AND PRESSED PEDAL AGAIN TO SEE FLUID POURING FROM REAR AXLE AREA. DROVE IT 30 MILES WITH NO SERVICE BRAKES TO GET TO THE GARAGE USING ONLY E-BRAKE AND 3,2,1 AND NEUTRAL RANGE OF TRANSMISSION TO BE ABLE TO STOP IF NEEDED. ALSO WAS ADVISED ABOUT FUEL TANK STRAP AND THAT I WOULD NEED A FLAME CUTTER TO CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP AS TRUCK BED BOLTS LOOKED HORRIBLE OR WOULD NEED TO CUT TANK STRAPS DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE TANK. THE "ANNUAL UNDERBODY WASH" MOST OWNERS MANUALS RECOMMEND IS INSUFFICIENT TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM.

WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO CHEVROLET DEALER SHIP FOR MAINTENANCE, IT HAD LESS THAN 36K AT THE TIME, THEY REMOVED ONE PLASTIC PANEL (FALLING DOWN FROM BEHIND THE DOOR INTERIOR TRIM PANELS) FROM EACH DOOR THAT WAS HANGING DOWN AND SCRATCHING MY ROCKER PANEL, AND SAID "WE DONT KNOW WHAT THESE ARE FOR, SO WE JUST REMOVED THEM", HMMM, MAYBE IT WAS TO HELP WITH MOITURE RELATED ISSUES WITHIN THE DOOR PANEL. NOT SURE JUST GUESSING, BUT CANT BELLIVE THAT THEY COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT. OVER ALL NOT IMPRESSED WITH CHEVROLET EVEN THOUGH IT IS PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAVE OWNED, IF THEY KEEP PRODUCING THIS CRAP THEY SHOULD LOWER THE PRICE.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED AT ABOUT 5 MPH AND CAUSED TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING CONTROL. UNABLE TO STOP, THE SILVERADO CRASHED DIRECTLY INTO AN ADVERTISING SIGN. THERE WAS MINIMAL DAMAGE TO THE SILVERADO, MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE ADVERTISING SIGN, AND NO INJURIES TO THE DRIVER OR TWO CHILDREN. FOLLOW-UP AFTER THE ACCIDENT REVEALED THAT ACTIVATION OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND PART OF A GM RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000).

WITH ALL NEW TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES, CHEVY IS NOW USING INFERIOR MATERIAL. DUST GUARDS AROUND REAR BRAKES OF THIS TRUCK ARE COMPLETELY GONE ON BOTH SIDES. EVERYTHING IS RUSTING. HAD 1975 BUICK ESTATE WAGON FOR 22 YRS. IT WAS IN BETTER SHAPE WHEN I SOLD IT THAN THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. CHEVY COULD DO ALL THE CORPORATE DOUBLE SPEAK THEY WANT. FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE LINES YIELDED CONSIDERABLE CORROSION IN OTHER AREAS. CONTACTING THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE TRUCK REVEALED THE HIGH COST TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE TRUCK. THE DEALER ALSO MADE NOTE THAT I SHOULD CONSIDER REPLACING THE FUEL LINES. CONTACTING GENERAL MOTORS YIELDED THE RESPONSE THAT THIS IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE AND THAT THEY COULD DO NOTHING TO ASSIST ME. I DO CONSIDER OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM TO BE MAINTENANCE ITEMS, NOT THE BRAKE LINES. BRAKE LINE FAILURE CAN RESULT IN IMMEDIATE CATASTROPHIC RESULTS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED EARLIER ON THE BUSY ROAD LEADING INTO TOWN I WOULD HAVE SURELY HAD AN ACCIDENT. FOUND BRAKE LINES BADLY RUSTED AND BOTH LINES LEAKING THAT RUN FROM MASTER CYLINDER TO ANTILOCK MODULE MOUNTED TO FRAME UNDER DRIVERS AREA. IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT THESE TWO SAFETY SENSITIVE LINES ARE MADE OF UN PROTECTED STEEL AS OPPOSED TO COPPER NICKEL AND ARE RUN OUT OF THE PROTECTED UNDER HOOD AREA TO THE HIGH CORROSION PRONE UNDERBODY TO MEET THE INAPPROPRIATELY PLACED ANTILOCK MODULE. TWO YEARS PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE OF THIS TRUCK GM HEAVILY ADVERTISED THE RUST RESISTANT GALVANIZED PANELS THEY WERE USING IN THEIR TRUCKS. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THEY QUIETLY REMOVED THIS RUST PROTECTION. I HAVE ORDERED NEW BREAK LINES TO TOTALLY REPLACE ALL METAL LINES ON THIS, MY LAST CHEVY TRUCK. I CAN ONLY WONDER HOW MANY FATALITIES HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS OFTEN REFERENCED CONDITION. THE ROTORS HAD BEEN TURNED BEFORE, ON A TRIP TO MY DAUGHTERS MY BRAKES STARTED TO GO OUT. THEY WERE COMPLETELY OUT BY THE TIME I REACHED HER CORNER. I HAD TO HAVE ALL NEW BRAKE LINES AND ROTORS AND PADS EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE ONLY 6,000 MILES ON THE PADS. I ALSO HAD RUSTPROOFED THE TRUCK INCLUDING THE UNDERBODY AND CARRIAGE WHEN I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2002. IT'S A RUST BUCKET DESPITE THE EXTRA PROTECTION. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE MODULE WAS RUSTED. THE BRAKE LINES WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. AND NOW THE FUEL PUMP IS OUT AND THEY FUEL LINES ARE RUSTED AS WELL. WHAT GETS ME IS I PAID SO MUCH EXTRA FOR EXTRA RUST PROOFING. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE RUSTED THROUGH THIS BAD AT ONLY 125000 MILES. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE MODULE IS PLACED WHERE THE RUST CAN GET AT IT RIGHT UNDER THE CHASSIS PART UNPROTECTED. SO MUCH FOR SAFETY. THAT WENT OUT AT ABOUT 75000 MILES BUT JUST GOT IT REPLACED AT 100000 MILES OR SO. THE BRAKE LINES AND THE FUEL LINES ARE A JOKE ON THIS VEHICLE. I USED TO MAKE AND INSPECT AND TEST THEM AT A FACTORY AND THESE WOULD HAVE NEVER PASSED INSPECTION FOR CORROSION TEST. BUT THEY WEREN'T MADE THERE. THE FACTORY IS CLOSED. NO UNION WAGES EITHER, BUT WE DID GOOD WORK NOT THIS GARBAGE. IT COST OVER $500 FOR MODULE AND IT COST 2500 FOR THE REST OF BRAKE JOB. AND NOW THE FUEL LINES AND PUMP AND FILTER WILL COST OVER $1000. PLUS MY TRUCK BODY IS RUSTING THROUGH ON THE ROCKER PANELS. I BOUGHT A SILVERADO BECAUSE THEY HOLD THEIR VALUE AND ARE DEPENDABLE. NOW MY VEHICLE IS ONLY WORTH ABOUT HALF OF WHAT IT SHOULD BE AND I'M PAYING THOUGH THE NOSE ON TOP OF IT! WE HAVE A 98 CHEVY BLAZER WITH 195000 AND NO RUST ON THE ROCKER PANELS AND THE BRAKE LINES ARE JUST NOW GETTING REPLACED. THERE WAS NO EXTRA RUST PROTECTION ON IT EITHER! FORTUNATELY THIS PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED IN THE SHOP, AVOIDING A POSSIBLY CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. I HAD THE FRONT LINES REPLACED BY THE SHOP AT A COST OF $581.50, AND I AM REPLACING THE REAR LINES MYSELF. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM AS IT RELATES TO PREVIOUS REQUESTS TO GM BY THE NHTSA TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE VEHICLES FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

CRESTED A SMALL HILL TO SEE A RED LIGHT WITH THREE CARS IN LINE. I DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED USING THE PARKING BRAKE AFTER SWERVING INTO EMPTY LANE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC IN ORDER TO AVOID HITTING THE LINE OF CARS FROM BEHIND. UPON INSPECTION, THE FRONT BRAKE CIRCUIT WAS BLOWN IN THE PIPING JUST AFT OF THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL. IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STOP A LARGE TRUCK WITH EMPTY BED USING ONLY THE REAR BRAKES AS THEY LOCK UP EASILY. THERE SEEMED TO BE NO BRAKE POWER USING THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH IS WHY THE PARKING PEDAL WAS USED. EVEN WITH A FUNCTIONAL PARKING BRAKE, THE "FAILSAFE" OF HAVING ONLY ONE CIRCUIT IS NEARLY USELESS GIVEN AN EMPTY TRUCK BED (LOW REAR-WHEEL TRACTION) AND A LOSS OF PRESSURE ON THE FRONT CIRCUIT. IN MY OPINION, LOSING THE FRONT BRAKES ON A TRUCK IS CATASTROPHIC. IN ANY EVENT, IN MY CASE, THE SUPPOSED FAIL-SAFE EITHER DID NOT WORK OR WAS INCONSEQUENTIAL. ALL OF THE HARD LINES (FUEL AND BRAKE) ON THIS VEHICLE ARE EXTREMELY CORRODED AND ARE BEING REPLACED WITH STAINLESS. THIS CAR SPENT THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF ITS LIFE IN OKLAHOMA AND MISSOURI (WHERE LITTLE TO NO SALT IS USED) AND MOVED TO NH IN 2006. THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE ROCKER PANEL IS ALSO RUSTED THROUGH AND THE FRAME HAS VERY SIGNIFICANT RUST, ESPECIALLY ON THE LEAF SPRING HANGERS. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT IS RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT I WILL NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE IN 4WD UNTIL I REPLACE IT. THIS VEHICLE SEEMS VERY SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUST, ESPECIALLY THE BRAKE LINES, SOME OF WHICH CRUMBLED IN MY HUSBANDS HANDS WHILE REMOVING. *TR

ALSO, THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE IGNITION KEY BECAME LODGED IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND COULD NOT BE REMOVED. IN ADDITION, THE ABS SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE CAME SLOWLY TO A STOP WITH STEAM RISING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. UPON PULLING THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE LOCATION AND UPON INSPECTION, IT APPEARS AS IF ONE OF THE METALLIC (ASSUMING STEEL) BRAKE LINES FEEDING FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS BLOCK HAD BURST. NO INDICATION LIGHTS ON THE DASH OF A BRAKING SYSTEM FAILURE OR LOW PRESSURE ALERT FOR THE SYSTEM. IT APPEARS THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED/RUSTED. UPON DISCUSSING WITH A REPUTABLE AUTO SHOP, THEY INDICATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THIS MODEL YEAR VEHICLE AND THAT A REPAIR TO REPLACE THE LINES MAY BE REQUIRED. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN MY OPINION AND IF THE MATERIALS USED TO MAKE THIS SAFETY SYSTEM WERE NON-CORROSIVE; THIS WOULD HAVE NOT HAPPENED. *TR

LEAVING FROM WORK AT THE GREATER CINCINNATI AIRPORT. DRIVING DOWN THE RAMP TO THE STOP SIGN AT DONALDSON RD. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE FOR THE STOP SIGN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR CAUSING THE TRUCK TO GO THROUGH THE STOP SIGN ACROSS THE EAST BOUND LANES OF DONALDSON ROAD AND FINALLY STOP BEFORE ENTERING A DITCH ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER EXITING THE OFF RAMP OF I264 IN PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA I SPED UP TO APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND APPROACHED THE NEXT STOP LIGHT. BOTH CARS INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT WERE PULLED INTO THE MEDIAN OUT OF TRAFFIC. AS I EXITED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE TRUCK FRAME AT THE FORWARD HINGE OF THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE DRIPPING FLUID WAS BRAKE FLUID. I SUSPECT A RUPTURED BRAKE FLUID LINE OR TUBE HAD RUPTURED WHICH CAUSED THE LOSS OF BRAKING POWER. THERE WAS NO WARNING GIVEN BY THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO WARN OF LOW BRAKE FLUID BECAUSE THE RESERVOIR WAS STILL AT THE NORMAL LEVEL. I BELIEVE CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES WAS ACCELERATED DUE TO THE USE OF SALT TREATMENTS ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER SNOW STORMS THAT HAVE FALLEN IN THE PAST THREE YEARS. LUCKILY NOBODY WAS SERIOUSLY HURT AND LUCKILY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN I WAS EXITING THE INTERSTATE AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE OF SPEED. ALSO THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY UPON IMPACT. THE LINE LET A TRAIL OF BRAKE FLUID FOR ABOUT 200 YARDS. THE BRAKE FLUID WAS CHECKED AT OIL CHANGE SERVICE FOUR DAYS PRIOR AND WAS FULL. NOW IT IS EMPTY. THEY SHOWED ME THE REMAINING BRAKE LINES ALL IN STAGES OF RUSTING OUT INCLUDING THE ONE LINE THAT BLEW OPEN CAUSING THE SUDDEN LEAK AND "NO BRAKES" PROBLEM. THE REPAIR SERVICE COST ME APPROXIMATELY $2800,00. I COMPLAINED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER [XXX], I TOLD HIM I HAVE DRIVEN GM CARS FOR DECADES ON MICHIGAN ROADS AND NEVER HAD ANY BRAKE LINE RUST OUT AND FAIL. I WAS TOLD THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE SALTY CONDITIONS DRIVING IN MICHIGAN WINTERS. HIS EXPLANATION STILL DID NOT MAKE MUCH SENSE TO ME. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 1/8 OF A MILE FROM MY ENTRANCE TO THE HIGHWAY, AND I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THIS HAPPENED BEFORE I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY. I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN CONGESTED MORNING TRAFFIC TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 60MPH. I HAD NO PRIOR WARNING. I WAS TOLD BY THE REPAIR SHOP THAT THE LINES WERE RUSTED SO BAD THAT IT WAS SENSELESS TO TRY TO FIX JUST ONE SECTION, AND THAT IF THEY DID THAT I WOULD BE RETURNING SHORTLY TO REPAIR ADDITIONAL PARTS OF THE LINES. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A VERY LABOR INTENSIVE REPAIR AND THAT IT COULD COST APPROXIMATELY $1000 DOLLARS. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MANY CHEVROLETS MANUFACTURED IN THE 2000 YEARS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND THEIR SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. *TR

UPON REQUIRING AN EMERGENCY STOP FROM 50 MPH APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION, ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES BURST. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. (NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, NO LOW BRAKE FLUID LIGHT, AND NO LOSS OF ABS LIGHT). I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND DROPPED THE TRANSMISSION INTO 1ST GEAR IN HOPES OF SLOWING DOWN BEFORE A CRASH. I MADE THE RIGHT TURN AT THE INTERSECTION, WHICH WAS UP HILL AND EVENTUALLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. I PUT THE TRUCK IN PARK AND APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. FORTUNATELY, THE LIGHT JUST CHANGED SO THE INTERSECTION WAS STILL CLEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AFTER CONFIRMATION OF THE DAMAGED BRAKE LINE. FURTHER INSPECTION HAS REVEALED THAT ALL THE STEEL BRAKE LINES ARE HEAVILY CORRODED AND ARE IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. THIS ISSUE SEEMS PRETTY FREQUENT WITH THIS PARTICULAR YEAR AND MODEL. A WEAK OR POORLY DESIGNED BRAKE LINE SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURER. PROOF OF FAULT IS INDICATED IN GM'S DECISION TO CHANGE THE BRAKE LINES TO STAINLESS STEEL IN NEWER MODELS. ON MY WAY DOWN TO FL THIS PAST FALL, WITH ABOUT 84,000 ON THE TRUCK, ANOTHER CALIPER SEIZED UP AND HAD TO REPLACE THE CALIPER, BOTH BACK ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. YESTERDAY, 3/27/13, ON MY WAY HOME FROM TOWN, WITH 85,000 MILES ON THE TRUCK, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND NO BRAKES. INSPECTION SHOWED A RUPTURED BRAKE LINE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. MY REPAIRMAN SAID EVERY BRAKE LINE IS SWISS CHEESE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I'VE SPENT SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS AND HAVE REPLACED BRAKES 3 TIMES, ALL ROTORS, MOST CALIPERS AND TWO FRONT HUBS BECAUSE OF RUST. THE FRAME AND EVERYTHING UNDER MY TRUCK IS RUSTED VERY BADLY. I TOOK MY 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 IN TO GET INSPECTED. IT FAILED DUE TO NO PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKES. I HAVE NEVER USED MY PARKING BRAKE, NEVER BEEN IN THE WHERE IT WAS NEEDED. I FIRST NOTICED AFTER REMOVING WHEEL THAT EVERYTHING IS RUSTED BEYOND WHAT I THINK IT SHOULD BE AT THIS POINT, THE SPLASH SHIELDS ARE ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE. I REMOVED THE DRUM AND BRAKE SHOES AND NOTICED THAT ON BOTH SETS OF SHOES, LEFT AND RIGHT, THE PADS OF THE SHOES WERE NOT REALLY WORN, BUT THE ACTUAL LINING THAT THE SHOES ARE ATTACHED TO WERE WORN AT THE VERY BOTTOM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND THE VERY TOP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, BOTH WHERE THERE ARE NO PADS. I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS THAT CAME WITH THE NEW SHOES, REPLACED EVERYTHING, AND STILL NO BRAKES. I THEN BOUGHT A NEW CABLE AND SWAPPED IT OUT, THINKING THE CABLE MAY BE STRETCHED. STILL NO BRAKES. I REMOVED THE WHEEL AND DRUM ONCE AGAIN AND HAD SOMEONE DEPRESS THE PARKING BRAKE. I NOTICED THE ACTUATOR WORKING, SO I REASSEMBLED EVERYTHING, AND STILL NO BRAKES. I THEN CONTACTED GM CUSTOMER SERVICE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOT. I WAS TOLD THAT I CAN TAKE MY TRUCK TO A CERTIFIED CHEVY DEALER FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, AT MY EXPENSE, BEING THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT IN OVER 3 1/2 YEARS, I CAN NOT AFFORD THIS. I WAS TOLD THERE IS NOTHING FURTHER THAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP ME. I HAVE LESS THAN 2 WEEKS FOR MY TRUCK TO PASS INSPECTION, IF NOT, THEN I MUST PAY FINES AND COSTS WHEN I DO REREGISTER MY VEHICLE. I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP FOR TRAFFIC AHEAD, I APPLIED THE BRAKES WHICH INITIALLY SLOWED THE TRUCK BUT THEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY TRUCK AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. BOTH VEHICLES SUSTAINED ONLY MINOR COSMETIC DAMAGE. AFTER MAKING SURE THE OTHER PARTY WAS UNINJURED AND WAITING FOR THE POLICE TO ARRIVE I NOTICED FLUID UNDER THE TRUCK. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK TO FIND BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE BRAKE LINES THAT RUN ALONG THE FRAME RAIL AT THE DRIVERS DOOR. ALL THE BRAKE LINES WHERE SEVERELY RUSTED AND I HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED TO A REPAIR CENTER TO HAVE THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND GM'S LOGIC OF USING A STAINLESS STEEL DRIVE SHAFT AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS, BUT USE LESSER MATERIAL FOR SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS THE BRAKELINES. A RECALL IS CLEARLY IN ORDER. *TR

I WAS DRIVING WHEN I WENT TO STOP AND THE PEDAL WAS SOFT. THE TRUCK STILL STOPPED BUT THE PEDAL DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO MY IN-LAWS HOUSE,ABOUT 2 MILES. WHEN I GOT OUT I SAW BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE BRAKE LINES RUNNING ALONG THE FRAME ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THEY ARE THE LINES THAT GO TO THE ABS MODULE. WHEN I INSPECTED FURTHER, ALL 4 LINES WERE EITHER LEAKING OR ABOUT TO. THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED BOTH ROCKER PANELS, JUST UNDER THE DOORS, WERE RUSTED AND THE PASSENGER SIDE RUSTED THROUGH. THE DOORS ARE NOT RUSTED AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE RUST ON THE TRUCK EVEN WHERE THE PAINT HAS FLAKED OFF. *TR

WITH ENGINE ON AND GOING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, AN 'ABS SYSTEM' WARNING LIGHT CAME OFF ALONG WITH A CONTINUOUS MOTOR TYPE SOUND. I PARKED THE CAR ON SIDE ROAD AND LOUD 'MOTOR' TYPE NOISE CONTINUED COMING UNDERNEATH THE CAR. I DROVE THE CAR BACK HOME AND ABS SYSTEM LIGHT ON WITH CONTINUOUS SOUND DID NOT STOP. TURNED ENGINE OFF AND THE SOUND DID NOT STOP. AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS, THE SOUND DID NOT STOP AND HAD TO DISCONNECT CAR BATTERY. TOOK CAR INTO CAR DEALERSHIP AND RIGHT AWAY BEFORE CAR WAS FORMALLY TESTED/DIAGNOSED, THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AND SERVICE ADVISOR CONFIRMED THE CAR HAD A 'KNOWN' PROBLEM RELATED TO ABCM (ABS CONTROL MODULE). ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY RELATED PROBLEM. THIS IS THE REASON WHY I AM SUBMITTING THIS SAFETY COMPLAINT. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR, DAMAGED ABCM COMPUTER CAN SEND AN INCORRECT SIGNAL AND THE BREAKS CAN CLOSE WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET CORPORATE AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION (SERVICE REQ # 71-1092953268). I WAS INFORMED THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR THIS TYPE OF PROBLEMS. I DID A QUICK SEARCH IN THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY CONSUMERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO NOTED THAT THE PROBLEM DOES NOT SEEM TO BE RELATED ONLY TO 2002 CHEVY TRUCKS, BUT OTHER CAR MODELS AND YEARS. IF THE CARDEALER SERVICE MANAGER IS CORRECT AND THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED PROBLEM, THEN THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INCIDENTS. I WAS DRIVING DOWN LOCAL ROAD, WHEN THERE WAS A THREE CAR ACCIDENT WAY AHEAD. I HAD RECENTLY HAD MY BRAKES DONE AND INSPECTION WITHIN THE PAST MONTH. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK BRAND NEW, AND HAVE HAD A LOT OF ISSUES WITH IT. INCLUDING ABS THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY RECALLED, AND NEVER WORKED AFTER IT WAS REPLACED, WHICH I DID COMPLAIN ABOUT, HE INTERIOR SET MATERIAL NEEDED REPLACING, THE TAIL GATE CABLES AND HINGES ARE BROKE, THE DEALER SAYS THERE IS NO RECALL ON THEM. A SENSOR WENT IN GAS TANK, THE DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR FELL OFF, THE WINDOW CABLE ON DRIVERS SIDE HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, PASSENGER SIDE ONCE, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. LIKE I SAID, I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW OFF THE LOT, TRADED IN OLDER CHEVY SILVERADO, PAID CASH WITH GM DISCOUNT. I LOVE MY TRUCK, BUT THINK IT HAS HAD WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE DEFINITELY READ A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ON THE CORRODED GAS LINES AMONG OTHER ISSUES AND WOULD HOPE CHEVY WOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. *TR
