THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR MOUNTING SURFACE NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AND REINSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,800.

I HAVE OWNED THIS TRUCK FROM NEW. IT IS USED FOR LIMITED HAULING DUTIES AROUND TOWN AND HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE. LAST SUMMER I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER FOR PA STATE INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC DROVE THE CAR INTO THE SERVICE BAY AND UPON DOING SO, THE BRAKE FLUID DUMPED OUT SUDDENLY FROM BENEATH THE TRUCK CHASSIS. THIS WAS 10 MIN AFTER I DROVE THE TRUCK TO THE DEALERS USING A LOCAL EXPRESSWAY. THE TRUCK WAS THEN PUT UP ON THE LIFT AND I WAS SHOWN THE FACT THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED TO THE POINT THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS DUMPED ONTO THE FLOOR. I PAID $2332 FOR BRAKE REPAIRS. AS A GRADUATE MATERIALS ENGINEER I INQUIRED AS TO THE MATERIAL USED FOR THE BRAKE LINES AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE CARBON STEEL. IT OFFENDS ME GREATLY THAT THIS TRUCK HAD THIS SEVERE FAILURE WITH LESS THAN 10K MILES, AND THAT GM APPARENTLY HAS BEEN AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HIDDEN IT FOR MANY YEARS. THEIR FOCUS ON SAVING A BUCK COULD HAVE COST LIVES AS A RESULT. THE DEALER WAS NOT HELPFUL IN MAKING ME AWARE OF ANY MITIGATION PROGRAM BY GM. AND I AM STUCK WITH A LARGE BILL FOR THEIR NEGLIGENCE. I AM APPALLED AND AN UNHAPPY CUSTOMER!!!

THIS COMPLAINT RELATES TO NHTSA ACTION NUMBER EA11001 REGARDING CORRODED BRAKE LINES ON CHEVY TRUCKS. I WAS COMING UP TO A RED LIGHT, SOME CARS AHEAD OF ME, GOING ABOUT 30 MPH. I APPLIED THE BRAKES. INITIAL PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL FELT NORMAL, THEN THE PEDAL RESISTANCE DROPPED TO ZERO. BY PUSHING THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I PULLED IN TO A GAS STATION. BRAKE FLUID WAS POURING OUT OF A LOCATION ALONG THE BRAKE LINE RUNNING TO THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. LOCATION ABOUT WHERE THE CAB AND BED MEET. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE SLOWLY TO A NEARBY CHEVY DEALER FOR REPAIRS. TOTAL REPAIR BILL WAS $2200. *TR

I PARKED THE TRUCK AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED FLUID FROM THE BRAKE LINE LEAKING OUT ON GROUND IN THE AREA JUST BELOW WHERE THE DRIVERS FEET ARE. THE LINE IS A RIGID STEEL LINE IN A GROUP WITH 3 OTHERS THAT RUN FROM THE ABS CONTROL UNIT FORWARD AND ALL OF THESE STEEL LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME WHERE THE LINE HAS RUPTURED. MY TRUCK IS A CHEVROLET 1500 Z71 WITH 126,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT. I FEEL THAT THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WITH RUSTED AND RUPTURED BRAKES ON THEIR CHEVY TRUCKS. MY HUSBAND AGREES THAT SALT AT IS PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LINES BUT THE ABS SENSORS IS AN ON GOING CHEVY PROBLEM IN THESE TRUCKS AND ONCE THE RECALL IS PERFORMED ONCE, THE FUTURE FAILURES ARE UP THE OWNER TO FIX AND COVER THE COST. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS OVER THE INTERNET IT APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH QUITE A FEW CHEVY TRUCK OWNERS. I WORK FOR A MAJOR AUTO PARTS RETAILER AND HAVE ASKED SEVERAL MECHANICS OF A FIX OR SOLUTION. THERE SEEMS TO BE QUITE A FEW DIAGNOSIS MENTIONED. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO FIX MY TRUCK PROPERLY AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS IN THE TRUCK. *TR

I HAVE DONE SOME READING ON-LINE CHEVROLET TRUCK FORUMS AND THERE ARE ALLOT OF SILVERADO/SUV GM OWNERS WITH AUTOMATICS THAT HAVE THIS SAME TYPE OF BRAKE SYSTEM THAT ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE, NOT HOLDING DUE TO PREMATURE WEAR OUT OF PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING. THERE IS ALSO A GM TECH SERV BULL FOR THIS MATTER AS WELL, BUT NOT A RECALL FOR THE VEHICLES WITH AUTO TRANSMISSIONS, WHAT ARE THE OWNERS OF AUTOMATICS LESS IMPORTANT. THE TSB HAS THE DEALERS REPLACE THE SPRING RETAINER CLIP JUST AS THE RECALL DOES. I THINK THE TSB NEEDS TO TAKE A HARD LOOK AT THE PARKING BRAKE ISSUES ON THE TRUCKS/SUVS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS AS WELL. *TR

I ALSO HAVE A 1997 BLAZER THAT LOST ITS BRAKES DUE TO BRAKE LINE RUST AND FLUID LEAKAGE. THIS HAPPENED AT 55 MILES PER HOUR, BUT I WAS LEFT WITH APPROXIMATELY 50% BRAKING POWER. I PROCEEDED HOME (LESS THAT 1.5 MILES) AT A REDUCED SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES AN HOUR. DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PROVIDED MARGINAL STOPPING CAPABILITY. IT WAS SUFFICIENT STOPPING POWER FOR A VEHICLE TRAVELING ABOUT 10 MILES PER HOUR AT 100 FEET. UNDER THE VEHICLE AFTER THE ANTILOCK BRAKING BOX, THE ONE LINE WAS SPRAYING BRAKE FLUID WHEN THE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE RUST WAS SO SEVERE, WHEN GOING TO CUT THE LINE, THE LINE ACTUALLY CRUSHED INWARDS WITH NO APPARENT GOOD METAL. HE ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE FRONT CALIPERS WERE RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE THE BLEED PORTS WERE UNSERVICEABLE, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE CALIPERS AS WELL AS THE BRAKE LINES. FROM MY RESEARCH THIS APPEARS TO BE A CASE OF INFERIOR MATERIALS USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE 6 MILLION AFFECTED VEHICLES. LUCKILY I WASN'T AT SPEED WHEN THIS FAILURE OCCURRED. THESE VEHICLES NEED TO RECALLED, INSPECTED, AND REPAIRED AT GM'S EXPENSE BEFORE THERE ARE ANY FURTHER INJURIES.

THIS IS A FOLLOW UP COMPLAINT TO ONE I CALLED IN TO THE NHTSA TO REPORT THIS PROBLEM. I TOO HAD A BRAKE LINE RUPTURE ON MY 2002 CHEVY PICKUP AND MY BRAKES FAIL AS A RESULT OF CORRODED BRAKE LINES. THIS TRUCK HAD ALREADY BEEN RECALLED DUE TO THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FAILING AT LOW SPEED WHICH THEY GM) ALSO ATTRIBUTED TO CORROSION. AND JUST LAST MONTH THEY FAILED BECAUSE OF THE LINE CORRODING AND RUPTURING. I ATTEMPTED TO COME TO A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOORBOARD. I EVENTUALLY STOPPED JUST SHORT OF THE INTERSECTION AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK TO A SERVICE STATION. I GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK AND SAW THE BRAKE FLUID LEAKING OUT OF THE RUPTURED BRAKE LINE BENEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. I TOOK THE TRUCK IN AND WAS INFORMED THE BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED OUT AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. $1800 DOLLARS LATER I GOT MY TRUCK BACK. LET'S SEE HOW LONG THEY LAST THIS TIME.. *TR

AFTER DRIVING 400 MILES TO LAUREL SPRINGS ,NC FROM BALTIMORE ,MD THROUGH MOUNTAIN ROADS AND ARRIVING AT OUR DESTINATION MY WIFE PARKED OUR TRUCK , WE GOT OUT TO GO IN AND OPEN UP THE HOUSE. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND PLACED IT IN DRIVE ONLY TO HAVE THE BRAKES GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR . I THEN TOOK A FLASHLIGHT AND HAD MY SON PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL AND BRAKE FLUID WAS GUSHING FROM THE BRAKELINE. I TOOK A FILE AND SCRAPED WHAT LOOKS LIKE LITTLE BALLS OF RUST AND BEHIND THE TEN OR SO BALLS FOUND A HOLE THE SIZE OF BALL POINT PEN TIP.I THEN SPENT TWO DAYS REPLACING THE BRAKE LINE FORM PARTS AT THE NOT SO CLOSE AUTO ZONE. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT 8 YEAR OLD BRAKE LINES WOULD RUST THAT BADLY , I'VE HAD 20 YEAR OLD VEHICLE S THAT DIDN'T HAVE BRAKE LINES RUST OUT. I'M JUST LUCKY THAT THE LINE BROKE AFTER GETTING TO MY DESTINATION AND NOT ON THE MOUNTAIN ROADS WE WERE TRAVELING. I HAVE THE OLD BRAKE LINE BUT LEFT IT AT THE HOUSE IN NC. *TR

I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1500 SERIES, 2002 SILVERADO, RESIDING IN SOUTH FLORIDA. WHILE EXITING THE RAMP OFF THE HIGHWAY, AT 50 MPH, WITH A 7,600 POUND CAR TRAILER IN TOW, I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR! ONLY WITH THE USE OF THE MANUAL OVERRIDE OF MY ELECTRIC TRAILER BRAKES WAS I ABLE TO STOP, AVOIDING A NEAR MISS COLLISION, AND A SERIOUS, PERHAPS FATAL ACCIDENT. IT WAS DETERMINED ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES LEAKED AND FAILED AS A "RUST AND CORROSION". THE VEHICLE HAD 52,300 AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, AND IN FLORIDA SINCE PURCHASING NEW. WITH THE HELP OF A FRIEND, A TEMPORARY REPAIR WAS MADE USING A COMPRESSION FITTING TO ALLOW US TO CONTINUE OUR 90 MILE TRIP HOME. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO CONFIRMED "RUST AND CORROSION" WAS THE CAUSE, HOWEVER THERE WERE NO RECALLS, OR WARRANTY, AND I WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE COST OF $738.00 TO REPLACE ALL THE LINES. AT THAT TIME I HAD LITTLE CHOICE BUT TO AUTHORIZE THEM TO PROCEED. HOWEVER AFTER COMPLETION OF THE WORK AND MY INSPECTION, THE LINES WERE INSTALLED USING INTERCONNECTING FITTINGS, AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS, AND NOT CONTINUOUS LINES AS WAS ORIGINALLY SUPPLIED BY THE FACTORY, NOR WAS PLACEMENT. I NOW QUESTION THE SAFETY OF THE REPAIR. THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED THE WORK THEY PERFORMED WAS THE METHOD AUTHORIZED BY GM, AND CONTINUOUS LINES WERE NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE FACTORY. THIS IS PROBABLY BECAUSE GM DOES NOT OFFER THEM, AS THE BRAKE LINES SHOULD HAVE LASTED THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT THE MATERIAL USED FOR THE BRAKE LINES WERE OF VERY POOR QUALITY. I HAVE CONTACTED GM AND CONTINUE TO AWAIT A RESPONSE FROM THEIR ENGINEERING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS FURTHER ADVISED THERE WAS NOTHING FURTHER THEY COULD DO, AND THE GM AREA REPRESENTATIVE CONFIRMED THAT WITH THEM. IN ADDITION, THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT WAS REPLACED WITH A RE-MANUFACTURED PART IN JULY OF 2005 AT 18,031 MILES. IN NOVEMBER OF 2006, AT 29,650 MILES, THE STEERING SHAFT WAS LUBED. IN APRIL OF 2008, AT 43,194 MILES, THE STEERING SHAFT WAS REPLACED A SECOND TIME. CURRENTLY, AT 56,000 MILES, THE VEHICLE IS STILL EXPERIENCING ISSUES. THE DEALER MUST CHECK AND REPLACE THE SHAFT FAILURES EVERY 25,000 MILES. LASTLY, THE REAR BRAKE ROTORS WERE RESURFACED FOUR TIMES AND ALL OF THE WINDOW REGULATORS HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THIS TRUCK IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER AND RARELY WILL SEE A ROAD WHEN THERE IS SALT ON IT. WITH THIS FEW OF MILES I DON'T THINK THIS SHOULD HAPPEN DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS LUCKY AND COULD HAVE BEEN IN A BAD ACCIDENT. HOWEVER, HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIRS; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER $500 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 66,800.

AT 19,500 MILES THE BRAKES WERE DIAGNOSED (ON 1-15-09) BY THE DEALER AS NEEDING COMPLETE OVERHAUL, A COST OF $571.00. THE PROBLEM WAS NOTICEABLE AT 12,000 MILES BY EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL, THE SAME WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. NO ACTION WAS TAKEN OR NOTICE OF BRAKE WEAR INDICATED BY THE DEALER WHEN NOTIFIED. BY 17,000 MILES THE BRAKES WERE NOISY AND WHEN INFORMED THE DEALER SAID MY REAR ROTORS WERE RUSTY FROM LOW USE AND I SHOULD CONSIDER A REPLACEMENT. UNABLE TO BELIEVE MY BRAKES WERE WORN OUT ( I'M 65 YEARS OLD AND HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLES' BRAKES WEAR OUT ANY WHERE NEAR THIS MILEAGE) I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT MORE OFTEN TO REMOVE THE RUST. DURING THIS TIME MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER, WITH ME AS A PASSENGER, NEARLY HIT A SEMI UNEXPECTEDLY BLOCKING OUR LANE, BECAUSE THE BRAKES WORKED VERY POORLY. THIS WAS IN THE FALL OF 08. IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 08, I WROTE TO THE DEALER REQUESTING COST SHARING FOR BRAKE REPAIR. NO RESPONSE.. THEN, IN LATE DECEMBER I WROTE TO GM , CUSTOMER AFFAIRS, IN DETROIT,MI. REQUESTING COST SHARING DUE TO PREMATURE WEAROUT. THEY REQUESTED THE COST ESTIMATE ON 1-15-09 AND THEN REFUSED OR DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE BASED ON "LOW USE". I AM WELL AWARE OF A BROAD PROBLEM WITH EARLY BRAKE WEAR ON 2001 TO 2004 (ADMITTED BY SERVICE REPS AT THE DEALER) LIGHT DUTY GM TRUCKS, MOSTLY DUE TO RUSTY ROTORS, ESPECIALLY ON THE REARS. THIS IS FURTHER EVIDENCED BY THE DEALER ESTIMATE WHICH SHOWED EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT "CERAMIC" PADS, WHICH WERE NOT ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. THE DEALER ALSO ADMITTED THAT AT ONE TIME THEY TRIED TO ADD A "KIT" TO SHIELD THE REAR ROTORS FROM SALT SPRAY. THESE ARE ALL EVIDENCE OF DEFECTIVE PARTS, SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY REGARDLESS OF THE VEHICLES AGE OR FREQUENCY OF USE. OR COVERED BY A RECALL. SUDDEN METAL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE RUPTURE ONE OF TWO BRAKE LINE RUNS BETWEEN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS FRAME MOUNTED CONTROLLER RUPTURED. THE EXTERIOR APPEARANCE OF THE LINE IS EXTREMELY RUSTY. THE LINE IS IN A BUNDLE OF FOUR LINES - TWO GOING TO THE ABS CONTROLLER AND TWO RETURNING FROM THE ABS CONTROLLER TO EACH OF THE TWO FRONT WHEELS. THE OTHER THREE LINES HAVE EXTREMELY RUSTY SURFACES AND APPEAR NEAR RUPTURE AS WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. THE PCV VALVE AND FUEL FILTER WERE REPLACED. THE REAR BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED AND THE ROTORS WERE MACHINED, THE ROTORS WERE EVENTUALLY REPLACED, THERE WAS NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END. THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT WAS DRY. RECENTLY I HAVE AN ABS LIGHT THAT COMES ON EVERYTIME I START MOVING. OCCASIONALLY THE BRAKE LIGHT ALSO COMES ON. I TOOK IT IN TO GM SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ABS PUMP ASSY AND MODULE WERE BOTH BROKEN AND REPAIR COSTS WOULD BE ABOUT $2000. I WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKES WORKED FINE, I JUST WOULDN'T HAVE THE ABS FEATURE. HOWEVER I BELIEVE THE ABS SYSTEM IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE ON A VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY IN AREAS THAT EXPERIENCE INCLEMENT WEATHER. IN ADDITION, THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT THE ABS LIGHT IS TRIGGERING THE OCCASIONAL BRAKE LIGHT. THE FALSE POSITIVE IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE COMPLACENCY WHERE DRIVERS WOULD IGNORE A REAL BRAKE FAILURE. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR AUTOMOBILE COMPONENTS TO LAST INDEFINITELY. LAST AUG GM OK'D A WARRANTY FIX BY USING SERVICE BULLT. # 02-05-006A-(NOV 26,2002). AT THAT TIME THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO RUNNING INTO A FENCE. AFTER COMPLAINING, THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR FIXING THE DAMAGE. NOW BACK TO THE PRESENT FAILURE. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE PROBLEM THIS TIME WAS THE WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLIES WHICH THE ABS SENSORS ARE ATTACHED. CONTACTING GM, I TOLD THEM I BELIEVED THE REPAIR SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH MY MILEAGE WAS 36,500. THEY SAID IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT WAS 3 MONTHS AND 500 MILES OVER THE WARRANTY. I DID NOT AGREE WITH THEM AS I SEE THIS AS A CONTINUATION OF LAST AUGUST'S PROBLEM AND THAT IT WASN'T FIXED CORRECTLY AT THAT TIME. I HAD THE TRUCK FIXED AND PAID THE $631 MYSELF. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BEARING AND HUB ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT WAS REPLACED ON THE LEFT SIDE. *JB
