TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR BRAKE LINE WAS CORRODED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 41,000. WHILE LOOKING AT MY TRUCK AFTER GETTING IT BACK FROM THE SHOP GETTING ALL 4 OF THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED, I NOTICED THE FUEL LINES ARE LEAKING AND EXTREMELY CORRODED. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A CHEVY LOVER, AND THIS IS MY FIRST NICE VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. BOUGHT USED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2014. SO FAR WE HAVE NOTICED THAT JUST ABOUT EVERY RECALL FROM THE PAST WAS NEVER FIXED ON OUR TRUCK, SO WE HAD TO SHELL OUT ALMOST $900 TO REPLACE THE BRAKE LINES FRONT TO BACK. NOW THE FUEL LINES, THE WINDSHIELD SEEMS LOOSE, THESE ARE ALL RECALLS FROM THE PAST. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO PUT A TIME FRAME ON RECALLS CONSIDERING SOME PEOPLE MAY NEVER FIND OUT TIL IT'S TOO LATE, AND OTHERS MAY NOT FIND OUT TIL SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

NOTICED THAT BRAKES WERE "SPONGY" THE NIGHT BEFORE. IN THE MORNING I STARTED THE CAR, AND STARTED TO DRIVE OUT THE DRIVEWAY WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES , THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE DASH BOARD INFORMATION CENTER INDICATED "SERVICE BRAKES". I GOT OUT AND LIFTED THE HOOD TO DETECT THE ISSUE. I SAW FLUID LEAKING FROM A RUSTED BRAKE LINE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION I NOTED THAT IT RUPTURED. THE REAL ISSUE IS THAT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED WHILE IN TRAFFIC OR WHEN EXITING MY DRIVEWAY WHICH IS 100 FEET ELEVATION FROM THE ROAD. EITHER WAY IT COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. AFTER THIS HAPPENED I RESEARCHED SIMILAR INCIDENCES WITH THE SILVERADO. THIS SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN DEFAULT THAT SHOULD HAVE A SAFETY RECALL. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES, SOME YEARS OLDER THAN THIS 2003 AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A BRAKE LINE RUPTURED. *JB

TRUCK EXPERIENCED CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WHEN A CORRODED RIGHT FRONT BRAKE LINE RUPTURED DURING AN ATTEMPTED HARD STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK CONTINUED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD NO EFFECT. SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION DOWN AND APPLYING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE EVENTUALLY STOPPED THE TRUCK. FLUID LEAKING FROM THE RUPTURE DRAINED THE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR WITHIN FIVE MINUTES. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF ALL THE BRAKE LINES REVEALED SEVERE CORROSION AND PITTING AT MANY LOCATIONS ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE TRUCK. DESPITE HAVING THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES ON SEPARATE HYDRAULIC CIRCUITS, THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH BRAKING CAPABILITY REMAINING TO SAFELY DRIVE THE TRUCK, EVEN AT LOW SPEEDS. THIS WAS A VERY CLOSE CALL AND IT IS EVIDENT THAT THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF THE BRAKE LINES IS SUBSTANDARD, POSING A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN.

UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKES, THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. UPON INSPECTION FROM A MECHANIC, IT WAS NOTED THAT BOTH BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED (ONE WAS ROTTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH CAUSING THE FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE LINE). WE WERE ALSO TOLD THAT THE GAS LINE AND CALIPER HAD SEVERE ROTTING. UPON MY RESEARCH, THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH CHEVROLET TRUCKS. I HOPE THIS WILL BE RESOLVED SO ADDITIONAL CHEVROLET OWNERS DO NOT HAVE SEVERE ACCIDENTS DUE TO THESE ISSUES. MY HUSBAND AND 4 YEAR OLD SON HAD TO WALK QUITE A FEW MILES IN 95 DEGREE WEATHER! WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. I WAS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY RESIDENCE SO I DROVE THE TRUCK BACK HOME USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. WHEN I GOT HOME I CHECKED THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE FLUID WAS LOW. I REFILLED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND HAD MY SON PUMP THE BRAKES AS I WAS UNDER THE TRUCK LOOKING FOR ANY VISIBLE FLUID LEAKS. ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED AND THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR BRAKE LINE HAD RUPTURED NEAR THE FRAME RAIL. AFTER REPAIRING THE BRAKE LINE AT THE POINT OF RUPTURE WE RE-FILLED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BEGAN TO BLEED THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURED AGAIN AT A POINT UNDER THE DRIVERS FRONT SEAT.

I WAS COMING TO A VERY SLOW STOP WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. I TESTED THE BRAKE SEVERAL TIMES WHILE MOVING VERY SLOWLY, AND THE PEDAL CONTINUED TO GO TO THE FLOOR WITH A SWOOSHING SOUND. I HAD SOMEONE CHECK UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE WHILE I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND HE CONFIRMED THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS SHOOTING ALL OVER. MY TRUCK IS 9 YEARS OLD BUT IT HAS ONLY 50,000 MILES, THE ORIGINAL TIRES AND HAS HAD ONLY 2 BRAKES REPLACED JUST RECENTLY I BELIEVE THAT IT IS PREMATURE FOR THE BRAKE LINES TO HAVE SUFFERED A COMPLETE BLOWOUT. ABOUT 4 WEEKS LATER, ANOTHER BRAKE FAILURE, TOWED BACK, AND THIS TIME EVERY STEEL BRAKE LINE WAS REPLACED. THIS TRUCK HAD BEEN GARAGED BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, EXCEPT FOR THE STEEL BRAKE LINES.(VIN-[XXX] THIS ISSUE IS NOT ONLY VERY DANGEROUS, BUT BECAUSE IT IS BENEATH THE VEHICLE, IT IS VERY HARD TO DETECT BEFORE HAND. THIS ISSUE NEEDS VISIBILITY AND SAFETY ALERTS SO MECHANICS AND AUTOMOTIVE AND TRUCK DEALERSHIPS CAN PERFORM MORE THOROUGH INSPECTIONS TO PRECLUDE FATAL ACCIDENTS. IN CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER MECHANICS, THEY ARE SEEING AN INCREASED FREQUENCY OF CORRODED STEEL BRAKE LINES. I CAN GET CORRODED BRAKE LINES, IF NEEDED FOR EXAMINATION. FORTUNATELY THIS HAPPENED WHEN I WAS TRAVELING SLOWLY, SO NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED AFTER THE 2ND FAILURE I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO REVIEW THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE SYSTEM AND ALL THE LINES COMING FROM THE ABS UNIT TO THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK ARE TERRIBLY RUSTED AND CORRODED. I HAVE FREQUENTLY ROLLED INTO INTERSECTIONS WHEN THIS OCCURS. IT'S THE WORST ON SLIPPERY ROADS. I CONDUCTED SEVERAL TESTS BY DRIVING A FIXED SPEED AND ATTEMPTING TO STOP IN AS SHORT A DISTANCE AS POSSIBLE ON A SNOW COVERED SLIPPERY ROAD. IF I APPLY BRAKES UP TO THE POINT WHERE THE WHEELS WANT TO LOCK, BUT I DON'T PRESS HARD ENOUGH TO ACTIVATE THE ANTI-LOCK PULSATION, I CAN STOP IN THE SHORTEST DISTANCE. IF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES PULSE, I ROLL MUCH FURTHER. IF I LET OFF THE BRAKES A LITTLE DURING THE PULSATION, THE TRUCK STILL STOPS IN A SHORTER DISTANCE. THIS FLAW IS NOT AS NOTICEABLE ON DRY PAVEMENT. WHEN I NOTIFIED THE DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THAT'S THE WAY THEY ARE, AND THERE WAS NO RECALL, ETC. I HOPE SOMEONE ISSUES A RECALL BEFORE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH OCCURS. THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE I WILL DISABLE THE ANTI-LOCK FUNCTIONALITY, AT LEAST DURING WINTER DRIVING. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ON OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES SUFFER THE SAME CONDITIONS FROM MY INVESTIGATION. MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HAS A BRAKING ISSUE WHERE THE BRAKES FAIL TO WORK. THE GENERAL MOTORS CORP HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE IDENTIFYING MODEL YEARS 1999-2002. I CALLED THE GENERAL MOTORS CORP FOR HELP WITH THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD BY THEIR REPRESENTATIVE, I NEEDED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE EVALUATED BY A CHEVROLET DEALER, IF THE PROBLEM WERE FOUND, THEY WOULD REPAIR IT AT NO COST TO ME. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALER, THEY FOUND AND DOCUMENTED THE ISSUE ON A SERVICE REPORT (I HAVE A COPY). WHEN I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS BACK, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM, IT WAS MY PROBLEM TO FIX. I EXPLAINED NUMEROUS TIMES THAT THIS IS NOT A WEAR ITEM, THEY HAD A RECALL PREVIOUSLY, THEIR DEALER DOCUMENTED MY VEHICLE AS HAVING THE PROBLEM. STILL, TO NO AVAIL, I WAS TOLD IT IS MY PROBLEM AND THEY WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE IT WASN'T IDENTIFIED UNDER THE RECALL. I NOW HAVE 22,000+ MILES AND TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IN CASE THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT THE BRAKE SYSTEM. I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE ABS KICKING IN AT LOW SPEED AND WAS TOLD THE FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSORS WERE DIRTY AND NEEDED CLEANED. THAT COST ME $420.93 AND MY BRAKES ARE STILL THE SAME. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED ?SEVERE DUTY METALLIC? PADS, SO I SPENT ANOTHER $388.36 AND THE PEDAL IS STILL MUSHY AND THE STOPPING POWER IS STILL NOT THERE. THE GVWR FOR MY TON 4WD EXTENDED CAB WITH 8 FOOT BED IS 6,700 LBS. THE DIAMETER OF THE FRONT ROTORS IS 12 INCHES. A COMPARABLE DODGE RAM COULD WEIGH AS MUCH AS 6,500 LBS, BUT THE DIAMETER OF THEIR FRONT ROTORS IS 13.23 INCHES. FORD USES A FRONT ROTOR WITH A DIAMETER OF 12.120 INCHES. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLES WITH BRAKE PROBLEMS AND NOT FORD OR DODGE? I WOULD THINK THAT SHOULD RAISE SOME EYEBROWS. THIS TRUCK AND MANY OTHER GM VEHICLES ARE A DANGER. I REPLACED THE REAR PADS AND HAD THE ROTORS TURNED DOWN AND ALSO REPLACED BOTH REAR CALIBERS WITH NEW ONES AND STILL THE NOISE IS THERE. ALSO THE BRAKE PEDAL IS VERY SOFT AND ALMOST GOES COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR EVEN AFTER NUMEROUS BEEDINGS OF THE CALIBERS . THERE IS NO AIR COMING OUT OF THE BLEEDERS. THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES APPARENTLY DON'T WORK BECAUSE THE WHEELS LOCK UP AND SLIDE WHEN YOU PRESS HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE WHEN IT COMES TO THESE BRAKE PROBLEMS. ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ON MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICKUP VIN # [XXX] DO NOT WORK AT LOW SPEED. I HAVE HAD THIS TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER IN SOMERSET PA WHERE I BOUGH IT AND THEY HAVE FAILED TO REPAIR IT. THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID THAT WAS THE NATURE OF ANTI-LOCK BRAKES AND DID NOTHING. THE SECOND TIME AFTER I ALMOST WRECKED THE TRUCK THEY CLEANED THE ABS SENSORS AND SAID THAT WAS ALL THEY COULD DO. THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. I WANTED THEM TO UNHOOK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES BUT THEY WOULD NOT DO THAT. THIS ALL TOOK PLACE OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. NOW GM IS RECALLING 1998-2002 SILVERADO PICKUP FOR ANTI-LOCK BRAKE PROBLEMS BUT NOT MY 2003 TRUCK. MY TRUCK WAS BUILT IN 2002 AND I BOUGHT IT IN 2002 BUT IT IS A 2003 MODEL. I BELIEVE THIS TRUCK SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED BEFORE I GET HURT. IF GM CAN'T REPAIR THIS TRUCK THEY SHOULD GIVE ME A NEW ONE. DT: THE VEHICLE WENT THROUGH NY STATE INSPECTION ON MARCH 28, 2005 AND PASSED ALTHOUGH THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING. FOUR MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE REAR ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND PITTED. GM WILL ONLY REDUCE THE PRICE FROM $225 TO $79, ALTHOUGH IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THEY SAID IT WAS A WEAR OR RUST ISSUE. BUT THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND CALIPERS WERE FINE. GM WAS NOT HONORING THE WARRANTY.*AK THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT WAS REPLACED DUE TO NOISE. *NM

BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED ON 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. ROTORS WERE CORRODED AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT GM PUT ON "JUNK" PARTS AND WILL NOT ADMIT IT. TRIED TO WORK OUT THE SITUATION WITH GM BUT THEY REFUSED TO COOPERATE. HAD TO PAY FOR THE WORK MYSELF.

MY HUSBAND OWNS A 03 SILVERADO C1500. I DRIVE IT TO SAVE ON GAS. I HAVE TRIED COMING TO A STOP BEFORE, AND HAD THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, I ALMOST MISSED MY TURN. I SCARED ME BECAUSE I KNOW YOU DO NOT NEED THAT MUCH PRESSURE ON BRAKES TO STOP. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I HAVE IS EVERYTIME I MAKE A LEFT TURN, THERE IS A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE FRONT END. WE THOUGHT IS WAS THE SHROUD COVER, BUT WAS NOT. IT IS NOW GETTING LOUDER, AND I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF THIS IS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR A RECALL FOR BOTH THE BRAKES AND THE KNOCKING NOISE? POTENTIAL BRAKE FAILURE ON NEW VEHICLE. 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO INFORMATION CENTER INDICATED "REDUCED BRAKE POWER." CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN NEW MEXICO INDICATED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE VACUUM FOR BRAKE ASSIST. NEW MEXICO CHEVY DEALER DID NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX AND I WAS TRAVELING, SO THEY FLASHED THE IPC CARD TO ELIMINATE THE MESSAGE. I RETURNED TO HOUSTON, TX AND WESTSIDE CHEVROLET FLASHED THE IPC IN AN ATTEMPT TO MASK THE PROBLEMS AND TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED. *JB
