The vehicle was being driven in a parking lot, fortunately, when there was a loud snapping noise that resulted in the total loss of steering control. The vehicle was moving at about 5 MPH at time of the incident. 10 minutes prior, it was being driven on the Freeway at 60 to 65 MPH. In the parking lot, at the time of the steering failure, it was put into Park, ignition was turned off and a Tow service was called to tow vehicle home. The next day, I (the owner) inspected the steering system and found the reason it failed. A threaded connection on the "Pitman Arm" had snapped in half, terminating the connection between the steering column and the center link, causing catastrophic failure of steering system. The vehicle was transported to a repair facility where my diagnosis was confirmed. The Pitman Arm was replaced, at a cost of about $600.00 and returned to service. There were no warning signs, that I was aware of, prior to the component failure. In my opening sentence, I use the term "fortunately" , which truly is an understatement . Had the incident occurred 10 minutes earlier while on the freeway or if it hadn't occurred in a parking lot at a relatively low speed, I don't even like to think about the death, injury and damage that would have occurred.

TRAVELING 25 MILES HOME ON INTERSTATE VAN HAD BEEN CUTTING OUT IF I PULL OVER STOP WAIT, CAN RE-START AND GO A WHILE. REDUCED ENGINE POWER. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT 9 MONTHS, HAVE TAKEN IT TO DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES AND REPLACED EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURS EVEN AFTER REPLACING: ACCELERATOR AND RECEIVER ON THROTTLE BODY AS WELL AS CHECKING WIRING HARNESS FOR ISSUES. ESSENTIALLY, THE VEHICLE WILL LOSE THE FUNCTION OF THE ACCELERATOR WITHOUT WARNING AT ANY GIVEN TIME DURING THE USE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT THEY DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA WHY IT STILL IS HAVING THIS ISSUE...THE OTHER DAY THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AND REDUCED ENGINE POWER MODE SET IN AND AT THE SAME TIME THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THOUGHT THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT AT THE SAME TIME WAS A ONE TIME DEAL BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN THE VERY NEXT DAY. THE VEHICLE HAD THIS ISSUE ON THE HIGHWAY THE OTHER DAY AND NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. IT IS SHOCKING THAT THERE ARE NOT THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE, IF YOU LOOK UP FORUMS ON THIS TOPIC THERE ARE OVER 200,000 THREADS ON THIS VERY ISSUES. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF FORUM COMPLAINTS ABOUT REDUCED ENGINE POWER AND HOW PEOPLE HAVE SPENT $1000 PLUS AT THE DEALER AND THE ISSUE STILL PERSISTS. I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER MORITZ CHEVROLET IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS REPLACED A PASSENGERS DOOR MODULE. WHILE DRIVING 5-10 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED DURING LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS AND THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. AFTER I RESTARTED THE TRUCK, THE STEERING WHEEL WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THIS MAKES IT ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT TO GO AROUND CORNERS AND MANEUVER IN PARKING LOTS. INTERNET SEARCH SHOWS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2000-2006 SILVERADO AND SIERRA PICKUPS, AS WELL AS TAHOES, SUBURBANS AND YUKONS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT IN THAT THE POWER ASSIST CAN SUDDENLY CUT OUT WHEN GOING AROUND A CURVE OR CORNER, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE ON COURSE AND AVOIDING STRIKING STATIONARY OBJECTS OR PEDESTRIANS. MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HAS A BRAKING ISSUE WHERE THE BRAKES FAIL TO WORK. THE GENERAL MOTORS CORP HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE IDENTIFYING MODEL YEARS 1999-2002. I CALLED THE GENERAL MOTORS CORP FOR HELP WITH THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD BY THEIR REPRESENTATIVE, I NEEDED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE EVALUATED BY A CHEVROLET DEALER, IF THE PROBLEM WERE FOUND, THEY WOULD REPAIR IT AT NO COST TO ME. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALER, THEY FOUND AND DOCUMENTED THE ISSUE ON A SERVICE REPORT (I HAVE A COPY). WHEN I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS BACK, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM, IT WAS MY PROBLEM TO FIX. I EXPLAINED NUMEROUS TIMES THAT THIS IS NOT A WEAR ITEM, THEY HAD A RECALL PREVIOUSLY, THEIR DEALER DOCUMENTED MY VEHICLE AS HAVING THE PROBLEM. STILL, TO NO AVAIL, I WAS TOLD IT IS MY PROBLEM AND THEY WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE IT WASN'T IDENTIFIED UNDER THE RECALL. THEREFORE, WHY WAS I TOLD TO BRING IT TO THE DEALER FOR NO REASON AND A COST TO ME OF $42, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WHY ARE THEY NOT CONCERNED THAT MY VEHICLE HAS AN ISSUE WHERE THE BRAKES FAIL TO WORK. GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE BULLETIN # 05068B, NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000. THE EVALUATION WAS PERFORMED BY KEIGAN CHEVROLET IN FRANKLIN MA, SERVICE REPORT INVOICE # 82978A. THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN 11/02 ALTHOUGH IT IS CALLED A 2003 MODEL. I ONLY SEEK TO HAVE THE BRAKING ISSUE REPAIRED. AS NOTED BY THE SERVICE REPORT, THE FRONT WHEEL HUBS NEED TO BE REPLACED. I ALSO HAVE A SECOND ISSUE FOLLOWING THE SAME CHAIN OF EVENTS, THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN RATTLES. THE MECHANIC STATED THERE ISN'T MUCH THAT CAN BE DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM OTHER THEN REGREASE THE SHAFT; WHICH WILL ONLY QUITE THE CLUNK FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. WITH SO MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THIS FAILURE THIS SHOULD BE REPLACED COMPLETELY BY THE MANUFACTURER AT NO COST TO THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE. MY NEPHEW WORKED FOR COLUMBUS OHIO DEALER AS MECHANIC HE TOLD ME TO CONTACT MY DEALER FOR SERVICE. HE ALSO STATED THERE WERE SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS OUT ON THIS REPAIR. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE DEALER WHERE PURCHESED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATED I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR REPAIRS. THIS IS A GM PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE RECALLED BY THEM. TRUCK NOW HAS 50,000 MILES ON IT AND THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED AROUND 10,000 MILES. I HAD TRUCK TO AN ALIGNMENT SHOP WHERE THEY STATE TRUCK CAN NOT BE ALIGNED WITHOUT REPAIRS BEING MADE THEREFORE THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD.

LUBING THE PART IS NOW GOING TO FIX A DESIGN PROBLEM. NOW GM WILL NOT COVER THE LUBING BECAUSE IT IS NOT UNDER ANY WARRANTY. THE STEERING SHAFT HAS A DESIGN PROBLEM THAT IS WHY GM HAS SENT OUT BULLETINS AND REDESIGNED SHAFTS FOR REPLACEMENTS, SO WHY IS THIS PART NOT ON RECALL??? ALSO PROBLEMS WITH CLANKING FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. EVERY TIME TRUCK WAS "FIXED" BY REPLACING/REPROGRAMMING THE TRANSFER CASE MODULE, AND LUBING OF STEERING COLUMN (WHICH MANUFACTURE INDICATES WAS A POOR LUBE JOB AT CONSTRUCTION). PROBLEM RECURRED. NOW DEALERSHIP INFORMS THAT THE MANUFACTURE ISSUED A TSB THAT INSTRUCTS DEALERSHIPS TO NOT REPLACE MODULES ANYMORE, AS GM IS AWARE OF PROBLEM AND NEW MODULES WILL BE NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. WERE TOLD THAT GM ENGINEERS ARE "INVESTIGATING" IT. NOW, IF MODULE FAILS AGAIN, OUR 4-WHHEL DRIVE TRUCK WILL BE WITHOUT 4-WHEEL DRIVE. DATE IS OF FIRST INCIDENT.
