The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving 30-35 MPH, the brake and the check engine warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that upon depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal traveled down to the floorboard, and the vehicle hesitated to respond. The contact pulled to the side of the road, added brake fluid to the vehicle, and continued driving. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal traveled down to the floorboard and the vehicle failed to respond. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact engaged the parking brake, and the vehicle stopped. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road downhill. The contact turned on the hazard lights and drove 5 MPH to her mother's residence while being trailed by a Police Officer. The vehicle was taken to O'Reilly and to Advanced Auto Parts, where the contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The contact purchased an oxygen sensor, an oil sensor, the battery, the brake booster, the thermostat, and the brake lines. The contact's son and nephew attempted to replace the parts and noticed that the brake assembly was significantly damaged. The contact's son and nephew also noticed that the frame, the exhaust system assembly, and other parts were severely corroded. The Used Car dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The Chevrolet dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 162,616.

The contact's son owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while his son was exiting a parking lot, the brake pedal hose ruptured, and the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the contact discovered that there was a hole in the brake hose. The contact used a personal trailer to tow the vehicle home where the vehicle remained. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000. The VIN was not available.

I WAS DRIVING ON A PAVED SECONDARY ROAD AT ABOUT 40 MPH. AS I APPROACHED A RR CROSSING I PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WHEN I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THIS WAS A NORMAL GENTLE APPLICATION, NOT A PANIC STOP SITUATION. I THEN PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND GOT JUST A LITTLE BRAKING ABILITY AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABOUT ONE MILE FROM MY HOME, SO I TURNED AROUND IN A DRIVEWAY AND VERY SLOWLY RETURNED TO MY HOUSE. I PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER I WENT OUT TO THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED A PUDDLE UNDER THE VEHICLE; I THEN OPENED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS A LOT OF BRAKE FLUID SPRAYED AROUND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE CHECKED & REPAIRED AND HAD THE VEHICLE TRANSPORTED TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE SHOP SAID A BRAKE LINE WAS RUPTURED DUE TO CORROSION, ALSO SAID ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND RECOMMENDED THAT I HAVE ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. I DID HAVE ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. IN LOOKING AT COMPLAINTS ON YOUR WEBSITE, I SEE THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON GM PICKUPS; I AM SURPRISED THAT NHTSA HAS NOT FORCED GM TO STEP UP TO FIX THE PROBLEM VEHICLES. NOW THAT MY TRUCK IS FIXED, I AM STILL CONCERNED ABOUT ALL OF THE OTHER GM PICKUP TRUCKS ON THE ROAD THAT HAVE SEVERELY CORRODED BRAKE LINES. THIS PROBLEM IS TOO SERIOUS FOR NHTSA TO IGNORE.

TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP FOR PULSATING BRAKES AND A WEIRD 'CLUNKING' NOISE/FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEN CORNERING. THEY REPLACED THE ROTOR ASSEMBLY, BUT NEVER LOCATED THE CAUSE OF THE STEERING ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS CONTINUED TO THIS DAY. LAST WEEK I MET ANOTHER CHEVY SILVERADO OWNER WHO HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAD RECEIVED A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I'VE NEVER BEEN NOTIFIED NOR HAVE I SEEN THE BULLETIN ON THIS SITE (HE RECOMMENDED THIS SITE TO OBTAIN THE DATA). HIS VEHICLE WAS THE SAME MAKE & MODEL, BUT ONE YEAR OLDER (MINE IS A 2004). THIS 'CLUNKING' NOISE/FEEL IS CONSISTENT WHEN TURNING CORNERS IN EITHER DIRECTION. IT EFFECTS THE PERFORMANCE FEEL OF THE VEHICLE. NO WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, NOR WAS THERE ANY INDICATION THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. AS THE CONSUMER WAS SPEEDING TOWARD THE STOPPED CAR IN FRONT OF HIM, WITH NO BRAKES, HE SAW A DRIVEWAY LEADING TO A SMALL SHOPPING AREA. HE TURNED ABRUPTLY INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND WAS ABLE TO STOP, USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WITHOUT DAMAGE TO HIS VEHICLE OR ANY OTHER VEHICLES OR PROPERTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND BRAKE FLUID WAS LOST.

AFTER RETURNING TO THE TRUCK FROM AN ERRAND I STARTED THE ENGINE AND, UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO WARNING LAMPS OF ANY SORT WERE ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR. PUMPING OF THE PEDAL DID NOT PRODUCE ANY RESISTANCE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING LAMP CAME ON. BRAKE FLUID WAS ADDED BUT DID NOT RESULT IN ANY RESISTANCE FROM THE PEDAL. HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED HOME WHERE IT THEN SAT OVER-NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING I OBSERVED A LARGE WET SPOT ON THE DRIVEWAY JUST BELOW THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH AND SAW THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES GOING INTO OR OUT OF THE ABS MODULE WERE SEVERELY CORRODED AND AT LEAST ONE HAD OBVIOUSLY BEEN LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A CHEVROLET DEALER. I ARRIVED AS THEY WERE RAISING THE TRUCK ON A LIFT. EVIDENTLY THEY ALSO ADDED SOME BRAKE FLUID BECAUSE QUITE A LARGE PUDDLE WAS FORMING ON THE SHOP FLOOR BELOW WHERE THE BRAKE LINES ENTER THE ABS MODULE. THE TECHNICIAN, THE SERVICE CONSULTANT, AND I ALL OBSERVED THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES, AND FLUID WAS LITERALLY DRIPPING FROM ONE THAT HAD OBVIOUSLY BURST. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT GM DOES NOT MAKE REPLACEMENT STEEL BRAKE LINES SO ALL THE LINES WOULD NEED TO BE HAND FABRICATED BY THE TECHNICIAN. DEALER ALSO ADVISED THAT THE ABS MODULE MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF HOW CORRODED THE BRAKE LINE FITTINGS ARE (FITTINGS ARE STEEL, ABS MODULE IS ALUMINUM) WHERE THEY SCREW INTO THE MODULE. WE ALSO OBSERVED THAT THE FUEL LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES FAR OLDER AND WITH FAR MORE MILEAGE AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE STEEL BRAKE LINES. I BELIEVE THE DESIGN IS FLAWED (THE ROUTING AND PLACEMENT OF LINES AND MODULE) OR THE BRAKE LINE MATERIAL (STEEL, INSTEAD OF STAINLESS STEEL) IS INSUFFICIENT. I HAVE PHOTOS AND THE OLD PARTS. *TR

I EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE IN MY 2004 SILVERADO WHILE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT. UPON ARRIVING AT HOME AND PERFORMING AN INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM I DISCOVERED A SEVERELY RUSTED/CORRODED THROUGH BRAKE PIPE DIRECTLY BELOW THE PROPORTIONAL MANIFOLD LEADING TO THE ABS UNIT. ABSOLUTELY NO REDUNDANCY HERE, TOTAL FAILURE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM, I DISCOVERED AN UNACCEPTABLE AMOUNT OF RUST/CORROSION ON BRAKE PIPES. THE CORROSION ALSO APPEARS ON OTHER LINES AS WELL AS THE WHOLE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK. I AM APPALLED THAT GM DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS VERY SERIOUS DEFECT THAT IS LIFE THREATENING BUT DOES HAVE RECALLS ON PARTS THAT ARE NOT LIFE THREATENING SUCH AS LIGHTS OR TAIL GATE CABLES. I HAVE NEVER HAD A FAILURE SUCH AS THIS IN THIS NEW OF A VEHICLE IN MY 50 PLUS YEARS OF DRIVING, EVEN IN MICHIGAN. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO RECTIFY THIS SERIOUS DEFECT. TRIED WORKING WITH GM BEFORE REPAIR AND RECEIVED CASE # [XXX]. AFTER REPAIR WAS COMPLETED, WAS TOLD BY DISTRICT MANAGER (PATRICK) THAT REPAIR WOULD NOT BE COVERED DUE TO AGE OF VEHICLE. DEALER CONFIRMED WITH GM CUSTOMER REP (EDWARD) THAT TRUCK WAS LOW MILEAGE, NOT ABUSED, AND PASSED "MULTI-POINT" CHECK WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. PAID $212 OUT OF POCKET TO GET TRUCK RELEASED. IT IS IRONIC THAT IF THE TRUCK WAS 2 YEARS OLDER IT WOULD BE COVERED. THIS RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO COVER ALL MODEL YEARS, AFTER 2002, WITH THIS SAME HUB DESIGN! VEHICLE WAS BEING OPERATED IN A NORMAL MANNER. AFTER STOPPING FOR A BRAKE AND PREPARING TO LEAVE THE PARKING AREA, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED IN ORDER TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE. THE PEDAL IMMEDIATELY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT AND CHIME ALARM ACTIVATED. UPON EXITING VEHICLE, BRAKE FLUID WAS SEEN POURING TO THE GROUND FROM AN AREA UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. AFTER BEING TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY AND PUT ON THE LIFT IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT A BRAKE LINE MOUNTED ONTO THE CHASSIS HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH. A SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION OF ALL THE BRAKE LINES SHOWED SEVERE RUST AND CORROSION DAMAGE AND ALL WERE REPLACED. VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO NORMAL USAGE AFTERWARD WITH NO PROBLEMS NOTED. BRAKE FAILURE 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500. LOUD GRINDING NOISE IN THE RIGHT REAR AREA OF MY PICKUP LED ME TO STOP AT THE NEAREST REPAIR LOCATION TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. INSPECTION INDICATED BRAKE PAD ON INNER RIGHT REAR WHEEL WAS WORN DOWN TO METAL AND WAS GROOVING INTO THE ROTOR. ADVISED TO DRIVE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND BRING TRUCK THE NEXT DAY FOR REPAIRS. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT BACK AND HAD TO HAVE A ROTOR REPLACED AND ALL FOUR REAR BRAKE PADS, EVEN THOUGH THE OTHER THREE PADS STILL HAD 75% OF THE PADS LEFT ON THEM. TECHNICIANS WHO WORKED ON MY VEHICLE RECOGNIZED COMMON PROBLEM SEEN IN MANY 1500 CHEVY SILVERADO'S OF THIS AGE/ERA. TECHNICAL BULLETIN FROM CHEVROLET (00-05-23-005B, DATED MAY 27,2003) STATES PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL TRUCK INCLUDING YEAR MODELS 1999-2004. SOLUTION TO PROBLEM WAS TO INSTALL MUD FLAPS IN FRONT OF REAR TIRES TO PREVENT ROAD DEBRIS FROM BEING THROWN UP ONTO CALIPER ASSEMBLIES AND CAUSING EXCESSIVE WEAR TO THE RIGHT REAR INNER BRAKE PAD. WE PURCHASED THIS TRUCK IN DECEMBER OF 2003, WELL AFTER THIS BULLETIN WAS PUBLISHED AND THEY SOLD IT TO US WITH NO MUD FLAPS INSTALLED AND NO MENTION OF THE NEED FOR MUDFLAPS OR THAT THERE WAS A KNOWN DESIGN FLAW IN THE VEHICLE THAT COULD CAUSE REAR BRAKE DAMAGE. CHEVROLET SHOULD HAVE INSTALLED MUD FLAPS ON ALL AFFECTED TRUCK MODELS SOLD AFTER THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS FLAW. THEY DID NOT, NOR DID THEY LATER ISSUE A RECALL TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. MUD FLAPS THEY RECOMMEND ARE NOT LONGER BEING MANUFACTURED BY THEM. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE WITH CHEVROLET AND THEY HAVE REFUSED ANY RESPONSIBILITY OR ASSISTANCE IN OBTAINING THE MUD FLAPS (PART # 15765007) OR REIMBURSING US FOR THE BRAKE WORK THAT WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO HAVE BEEN DONE, IF NOT FOR THIS KNOWN DESIGN FLAW IN OUR TRUCK. I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF TRUCK OWNERS OUT THERE THAT HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM AND PERHAPS DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE BULLETIN, AND ARE UNAWARE OF CHEVROLETS KNOWLEDGE OF THE DESIGN FLAW AND THE MUD FLAP SOLUTION. *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR; HOWEVER, THEY WANTED TO CHARGE HIM FOR THE SERVICE. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY SINCE THE BRAKES WERE NOT PROPERLY REPAIRED THE FIRST TIME. INSTEAD, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC FOR REPAIR. ON ONE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE DROVE INTO A SNOW BANK BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP. HE WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN THREE OTHER CRASHES BECAUSE OF THE BRAKES. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER OVER TEN TIMES AND THEY ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE FAILURE APPROXIMATELY 3-4 TIMES. THE DEALER CHANGED THE FRONT ABS HUB, BUT THE REMEDY WOULD ONLY CORRECT THE ISSUE FOR APPROXIMATELY 1-2 WEEKS. THE FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE GROUND IS SLIPPERY DUE TO MUD, SNOW, OR ICE. WHEN THE TIRES REGAIN TRACTION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE PEDAL WILL NOT GO DOWN AT ALL. THE VEHICLE REVS AND SURGES. THE ABS MOTOR CAN BE HEARD BUT THE BRAKES FAIL TO OPERATE. THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN THREE CRASHES DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE FIRST CRASH DENTED THE DRIVER SIDE. THE SECOND CRASH OCCURRED WHEN HE STRUCK A TREE WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE. THE BUMPER WAS BENT AND THE QUARTER PANEL WAS CAVED INWARDS. THE THIRD CRASH OCCURRED WHEN HE ACCELERATED AND THE VEHICLE REVVED AND SLIPPED ON WET GRASS. THE VEHICLE THEN WENT OFF THE EDGE OF THE ROAD AND DOWN 30-40 FEET INTO A SNOW BANK. A TOW TRUCK HAD TO RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER APPROXIMATELY 5 OR 6 TIMES, BUT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT HAS THE WORK ORDERS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

WHEN BRAKING, IF THE VEHICLE IS ON A VERY ROUGH ROAD THAT MAKES THE TRUCK BOUNCE SHARPLY SEVERAL TIMES IN A BRIEF PERIOD, THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATES. THIS INCREASES THE STOPPING DISTANCE ON A DRY ROAD. ON A CERTAIN COUNTRY ASPHALT ROAD I HAVE DRIVEN THERE IS A SHORT ROUGH ARE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING A STOP SIGN AT AN INTERSECTION. AS AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER I KNOW WHEN TO COMMENCE BRAKING. HOWEVER, THE FIRST TIME I DROVE MY ABS-EQUIPPED SILVERADO AT THE LOCATION MENTIONED, THE STOPPING TIME WAS INCREASED UNEXPECTEDLY DUE TO THE ABS ACTIVATION AND MY TRUCK WENT PART-WAY INTO THE INTERSECTION. FUTURE STOPS WERE MADE SAFELY AFTER I BECAME AWARE OF THE STRANGE ABS BEHAVIOR AND BEGAN BRAKING AT THAT INTERSECTION EARLIER THAN NORMAL AND CRAWLED OVER THE ROUGH PAVEMENT SECTION AT A SNAIL'S PACE. DANGER EXISTS WHEN DRIVING IN AN UNFAMILIAR LOCATION AND COMING UPON A VERY ROUGH SPOT. THESE ROUGH SPOTS ARE NOT ALWAYS READILY VISIBLE ESPECIALLY ON AN ASPHALT COVERED ROADWAY. THE BUMPS DO NOT HAVE TO BE LARGE, JUST ENOUGH TO JOSTLE THE TRUCK VERTICALLY, CAUSING THE ABS TO ENGAGE. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER BUT THEY MENTIONED A LACK OF OPPORTUNITY TO REPLICATE THE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM ALONG WITH EXPRESSING DOUBT ABOUT THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY OCCURRING. AN INTERNAL GROAN EMERGED AS I HEARD THE 4-WHEELER DRIVING ROOKIES SPEW THEIR BLATHER AS THIS LONG-HAUL TRUCKING PROFESSIONAL DRIVER WHO DRIVES IN ONE YEAR WHAT THEY DO IN TEN WAS DOUBTED. TYPICAL. I ADMIT, THE PROBLEM IS DIFFICULT TO REPLICATE UNLESS A LOCATION CAN BE FOUND WITH THE PROPER PAVEMENT CONDITIONS. I PAID AN OUTSIDE COMPNAY TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE CHEVY DELAER WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCE SOLD THE VEHICLE BUT HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER CHEVY K1500 OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. THOSE BRAKES ARE DEFECTIVE AND UNSAFE, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET KILLED BECAUSE CHEVY REFUSES TO ADMIT TO THE PROBLEM OF POOR SAFETY DESIGN!
