I was driving down the highway at 65 mph and went to slow down and I had no brakes. Resulting in me having to go into the ditch to avoid a collision. After I was able to get the truck to slow down and to a stop I inspected my braking system to find all of my brake lines were rusted out and I had ruptured my brake lines. Since the incident I have had to replace all my brake lines and both of my brake cylinders on the rear of my truck. Now I have minimal brakes after bleeding them and they are slowly coming back. The truck has almost 400,000 miles on the chassis but a new motor. During this event I was getting a grinding coming from the rear differential, after inspection, I found that my gov lock was bad and needed new spider gears which I have since replaced the rear differential with a posi differential and have had minimal problems since.

NOISE GETS LOUDER IN THE CABIN OF THE TRUCK AS I DRIVE ON THE ROAD. 3. SIGNAL LIGHTS TURN ON BRIGHT WHILE ON LEFT HAND TURN SIGNAL. AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER AND OTHER COMPONENTS WONT WORK

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE BRAKING SYSTEM HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A TREE. DURING THE CRASH, THE FRONT END EXPERIENCED SEVERE DAMAGE BUT THE FRONT AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND NO POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO A PARKING LOT AND A TOWING COMPANY WAS CALLED. THE COSMETIC DAMAGES WERE BEING REPAIRED AND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED AS OF YET. A LOCAL DEALER (UNKNOWN) WAS CALLED AND INFORMED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER THEN CALLED THE CONTACT AND OPENED A CASE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.

AT 45,000 MI, HAD TO REPLACE ABS HUB SENSOR ASSY DUE TO FALSE ACTIVATION. I HAVE SINCE REPLACE 3 MORE ASSYS COSTING OVER $400 EACH OCCURANCE. AT 100,000 MI, HAD TO REPLACE A LEAKING BRAKE LINE WHICH HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND AT 120,000 MI LOST ALL HYD PRESSURE WHILE BRAKING TO AVOID SEVERAL DEER ENTERING THE ROADWAY. REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES AT A COST OF $1200. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CONSUMER COMPLAINTS ON BOTH ISSUES, BUT GM WILL NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR EITHER.THIS IS THE 9TH SILVERADO I HAVE OWNED OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS. NEXT ONE WILL BE A FORD.

WHILE DRIVING ON A DIVIDED 4 LANE HIGHWAY AT NIGHT, SEVERAL DEER RAN IN THE PAT( OF OUR VEHICLE. I APPLIED THE BRAKES, SND THEY WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. WE SLOWED DOWN BUT WERE UNABLE TO STOP. LUCKILY THEREVWAS NO ONE BESIDE US AND WE WERE ABLE TO AVOID THE LAST DEER BY SWERVING INTO THE LEFT LANE. I COULD ELL THERE WAS NO PRESSURE IN MY BRAKE PEDAL AFTER THAT. WE WERE ABOUT 20 MILES FROM HOME BUT I ONLY HAD 2 MORE STOP SIGNS UNTIL OUR RESIDENCE. THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH DIDNT COME ON UNTIL LESS THAN 1/4 MILE FROM MY HOUSE. THERE WAS ALSO AN AUDIBLE ALARM AT THAT TIME. WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO MY DRIVEWAY AND GET STOPPED FROM THERE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND ONE HAD BURST. THE ADDITIONAL STRESS CAUSE BY THE RUPTURING OF THE LINE THEN AFFECTED THE OTHER LINES. I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES BEFORE IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE AGAIN.

YET ANOTHER FAILURE OF INADEQUATELY SPECCED BRAKE LINES. I HAVE NOW HAD TO REPLACE TWO BRAKE LINES (FROM THE BPMV TO THE FRONT-RIGHT CALIPER AND BPMV TO THE REAR-LEFT DRUM) DUE TO BLOW-OUTS ORIGINATING FROM HEAVY CORROSION - BOTH OF WHICH OCCURRED IN HEAVY-TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. ON EVERY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED, BRAKE LINES WERE AN ITEM THAT COULD MORE-OR-LESS BE PRESUMED A LIFETIME PART; THEY RARELY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED UNLESS DAMAGED. HOWEVER, ON MY TRUCK (AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS JUST ON THE NHTSA'S COMPLAINTS PAGE FOR THE 06 SILVERADO ALONE), THE HARD BRAKE LINES ARE ABOUT AS FAR FROM A LONG-LASTING, HIGH-QUALITY PART AS YOU CAN GET. THERE IS AN ENDLESS AMOUNT OF DOCUMENTATION SCATTERED ACROSS THE INTERNET ON THIS MATTER, YET THE NHTSA SEEMS AVERSE TO HOLDING GM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR PRODUCT. IT MAY WELL BE TOO LATE AT THIS POINT FOR THE NHTSA TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, BUT WHY DIDN'T THEY DO ANYTHING SOONER? THE OLDEST RECORDED COMPLAINT ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE IS FROM 5-22-2012 (ID# 10459283), THERE ARE HUNDREDS ON THE EXACT SAME MATTER, AND YET THE NHTSA HAS PUBLICLY OPENED 0 INVESTIGATIONS ON THE TOPIC. TO THE NHTSA, PLEASE HOLD GM ACCOUNTABLE FOR SPECCING LINES THAT ARE NOT ADEQUATE FOR A SERVICE ENVIRONMENT, AND QUIT MAKING CONSUMERS RESPONSIBLE FOR GM'S CHOICES. THANK YOU.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SHOOK, THE BRAKES MADE A SCRAPING NOISE, AND THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. WHILE THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO DECELERATE AND TURN THE VEHICLE, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL DETACHED FROM THE HUB. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000.

NEPHEW BORROWED MY TRUCK. HE WAS IN MOTION AND TRIED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN ON A CITY STREET AND REALIZED BRAKES HAD FAILED. HE WISELY CONTINUED STRAIGHT TILL IT SLOWED DOWN ENOUGH AND HE MADE A RIGHT HAND TURN ONTO A ROAD AND PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT BEHIND A HOUSING PROJECT. HE USED A SNOW BANK/BOULDER TO STOP THE TRUCK. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT. TRUCK WAS TOWED BACK TO MY HOUSE. I DO MY OWN REPAIRS. AFTER INSPECTION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ONE OF THE SUPPLY LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER INTO THE ABS MODULE HAD RUPTURED. THERE WAS COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM AFTER A SINGLE PUSH ON THE BRAKES. THE TRUCK IS 11 YEARS OLD. HOW CAN THE BRAKE LINES BE RUSTING OUT. THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND A SERIOUS FLAW WITH THIS DESIGN. I'M ATTACHING 2 PICTURES FOR YOUR OBSERVATION. GM SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR FIXING THESE BAD DESIGNS. IS THIS ANOTHER CHEAP SOLUTION LIKE THE IGNITION KEY PROBLEM THAT COST COUNTLESS LIVES? THERE SHOULD BE THE UTMOST ACTION BY THIS AGENCY TO HOLD GM ACCOUNTABLE. THIS ABS MODULE SHOULD BE UP IN THE FRONT HOOD LIKE OTHER MANUFACTURERS DO. NOT UNDER THE CAB IN A WET ENVIRONMENT. SHAME ON GM.

NO BRAKING ACTION AT ALL WHEN I TRIED TO STOP, BRAKE FLUID POURED OUT AND I HAD TO USE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP VEHICLE. OCCURRED WHEN I WAS DRIVING OUT OF MY GARAGE. IF I HAD BEEN ON HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED SIGNIFICANT INJURY TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. THIS VEHICLE SAW ONLY LIMITED USE DURING WINTER MONTHS BUT LINES ARE VERY RUSTED.

GAS TANK ABOUT TO FALL OFF DUE TO RUST FAILURE. CANNOT DRIVE TRUCK. BRAKES NO LONGER FUNCTION AND TRUCK IS UNSAFE DUE TO FRAME BEING COMPROMISED.

DRIVING MY CHEVY SILVERADO DOWN THE ROAD. HIT THE BRAKES FOR A DEER AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. FLUID WAS ALL OVER THE ENGINE AND ON THE ROAD. FOUND THAT THE METAL BRAKE LINE BLEW OUT. TALKED TO 3 COMPANIES ABOUT REPAIRS. ALL THE LINES ARE ROTTEN. MINIMUM COST IS $500. ALL PLACES SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH GM TRUCKS-EVEN THE DEALER SAID OH BRAKE LINES GO BAD ALL THE TIME ON VEHICLES OVER 10 YEARS OLD. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS; OWNED AT LEAST 20 VEHICLES AND NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING. IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW IT-BRAKES ARE PRETTY IMPORTANT! I WAS LUCKY. NO ONE WAS HURT. I WAS ON A BACK ROAD. I READ THAT GM USED LOW QUALITY MATERIAL FOR THEIR LINES. IF SO, IT SHOULD BE EASY TO BREAK IT DOWN AND VERIFY. WAS THIS METAL SUSCEPTIBLE TO CORROSION? THEY KNOW ALL THE CONDITIONS THAT THEIR TRUCKS WILL BE IN. HOW MANY MORE OF UNREPORTED ISSUES ARE THERE? SOONER OR LATER IT WILL BE PEOPLE'S LIVES THAT WILL BE LOST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

AT A COST OF $400. EVENTUALLY, ALL HUB SENSORS BEGAN GIVING FALSE INDICATIONS. WAS TOLD BY DEALER IT WAS ATTRIBUTED TO A DEFECTIVE DESIGN, BUT THERE WAS NO BULLETIN OR RECALL TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE ALL HUBS IF IT IS ONLY GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. GM SHOULD MAKE GOOD ON THESE REPAIRS.

WAS DRIVING VEHICLE ON US 131 IN HOLLAND MI. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 50MPH WHEN I HAD TO BRAKE FOR STOPPED TRAFFIC AHEAD. VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW WHEN SUDDENLY BRAKE PEDAL FELL AND I LOST MUCH OF MY BRAKING. HAD TO VEER OFF TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO AVOID POSSIBLE COLLISION WITH STOPPED TRAFFIC. WHEN I PULLED OVER TO INSPECT MY TRUCK, I NOTICED FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE FRAME RAIL NEAR THE FUEL TANK. IT WAS BRAKE FLUID. THE BRAKE LINE THAT GOES FROM THE ABS UNIT TO THE REAR BRAKE HOSE WAS RUSTED THROUGH AND LEAKING. THIS IS A 10YR OLD TRUCK WITH ONLY 122000 MILES ON IT. I DON'T BELIEVE THIS TYPE OF FAILURE IS ACCEPTABLE FOR A VEHICLE OF THIS AGE AND MILEAGE. I WAS ABLE TO CAREFULLY DRIVE THE TRUCK HOME AND PARKED IT. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER SERVICE MANAGER, WHO COULD ONLY REPAIR IT AT MY EXPENSE. I GOT GENERAL MOTOR CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE # FROM HER AND CONTACTED THEM. THEY OPENED A CASE, #8-2572108769, AND SAID THEY ALSO WOULD DO NOTHING TO ASSIST IN THE REPAIR OF THIS CONDITION. THEY ARE LUCKY NOT TO HAVE A DEATH OR INJURY LAWSUIT ON THEIR HANDS. THE TRUCK DID EVENTUALLY COME TO A STOP WITH THE CONTINUED PUMPING OF THE BREAKS

THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND COMPLETELY FAILED; THROUGH THE INTERSECTION WE WENT. I WAS ABLE TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO SLOW AND THEN STOP THE TRUCK. SOMEHOW, WE WERE ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK THE REST OF THE WAY HOME USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR WAS FULL, BUT I COULD SEE FLUID LEAKING UNDER THE TRUCK FROM THE FRAME AREA NEAR THE DRIVER'S DOOR. LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK, I NOTICED THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED; EVERY BRAKE LINE ON THE TRUCK WAS RUSTED. LOOKING ON-LINE, I NOTICED I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. I ORDERED A COMPLETE SET OF STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES. WE HAD THE TRUCK TOWED THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVY DEALER ($200.00). THEY REPLACED EVERY BRAKE LINE ON THE TRUCK AS WELL AS THE FRONT CALIPERS ($2100). THE DEALER DID A GREAT JOB; $1600.00 OF THE COST WAS FOR LABOR.

WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH DOWN A STATE HIGHWAY. AFTER COMING AROUND A BLIND CURVE, CAME UPON STOPPED TRAFFIC DUE TO ROAD WORK. APPLIED PRESSURE TO BRAKE PEDAL WHEN PEDAL WENT SOFT AND DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. AFTER RELEASING BRAKES AND PUSHING AGAIN STILL HAD NO BRAKES. HAD TO SWERVE OUT OF ROAD-WAY TO AVOID REAR ENDING MULTIPLE VEHICLES. AFTER RUNNING OUT OF ROAD, HIT 2 CULVERT PIPES ALONG WITH ROAD WORK SIGNAGE, FINALLY BRINGING THE TRUCK TO A STOP IN A RESIDENTIAL YARD. TRUCK BRAKE LINES FOR FRONT BRAKES HAD CORRODED AND RUPTURED CAUSING THE INCIDENT. FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER SHOWS AN APPARENT ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL GMS FOR BRAKE LINE CORROSION THAT GM HAS FAILED TO ADDRESS THROUGH THE RECALL PROCESS.

PARKED VEHICLE IN DRIVEWAY, MOVED IT ABOUT THREE FEET AND BRAKED. THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND FOUND A LARGE PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID COMING FROM A RUSTED THROUGH BRAKE LINE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE OTHERS WERE IN THE SAME STATE. LUCKY THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN WITH FAMILY ONBOARD WHILE DRIVING ON A ROADWAY, COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.

I STARTED LOOKING AROUND THE TRUCK. THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS LOW ON FLUID. NO WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I NOTICED FLUID UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. IT WAS BRAKE FLUID COMING FROM A RUSTED THRU BRAKE LINE. AFTER INSPECTION, ALL OF THE OTHER BRAKE LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED. THE REPAIR(REICHERS AUTO AND TIRE-WASHINGTON, MO) SHOP IS REPLACING ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES DUE TO HEAVY RUST. COST IS GOING TO BE OVER $800.

REAR BRAKE LINE RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH DURING NORMAL DRIVING OPERATION WHICH RESULTED IN A BRAKE FLUID SPILL AND REDUCED BRAKING CAPACITY OF THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS ON A CITY STREET TURNING ONTO A HIGHWAY WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. FURTHER INSPECTION FOUND THAT ALL BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE HAD EXTENSIVE CORROSION AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. VEHICLE HAD 120,000 MILES ON IT WITH NO ACCIDENT HISTORY.

WAS TOLD BY A DEALER MECHANIC IT WAS A BAD ABS SENSOR AND TO REPLACE HUB. I DID AND NOW, TWO YEARS LATER, IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. NOW I'M BEING TOLD IT IS A PROBLEM WITH ELEMENTS IN MY AREA, BEING IN A SNOWBELT STATE, GETTING INTO WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND BLOCKING SIGNAL. SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS AS LAST TIME, DIFFERENT DIAGNOSIS. I HAVE A HOME IN THE HILLS OF WEST VIRGINIA AND HAD JUST RETURNED FROM TOWN AFTER DRIVING UP AND DOWN LOCAL MOUNTAIN ROADS. I PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY WITHOUT INCIDENT. WHEN I STARTED THE TRUCK TO MOVE IT IN DRIVEWAY AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE, THE PEDDLE WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS TOTALLY WITHOUT BRAKES. LUCKILY, I WAS ON A FLAT SURFACE AND USED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP VEHICLE. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES AGAIN, I NOTICED A STREAM OF BRAKE FLUID SQUIRTING OUT FROM THE AREA UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I REALIZED THAT ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES ALONG THE FRAME HAD FAILED DUE TO CORROSION. ONLY ONE OF THE 4 BRAKE LINES HAD FAILED, HOWEVER, THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS RENDERED COMPLETELY INOPERABLE. ABSOLUTELY NO REDUNDANT BRAKING AVAILABLE, EXCEPT FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY OR DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, IT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. THE TRUCK HAS NO VISIBLE BODY OR FRAME CORROSION. HOW COULD THE THE SAFETY-CRITICAL BRAKE LINES CORRODE WHEN THE REST OF THE VEHICLE IS IN GOOD SHAPE RUST-WISE? SEEMS GM HAS USED SUB-STANDARD BRAKE LINES IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND IT IS A WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT AND SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO ADDRESS.

I COULD SEE A LIQUID DRIPPING RAPIDLY -- BRAKE FLUID-- UNDER THE TRUCK ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. I OPENED THE HOOD AND CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT LEFT. WITHIN FIVE MINUTES THE REST OF THE BRAKE FLUID HAD DRAINED OUT WITH GRAVITY. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF ME OR CROSSING THE STREET. NOTE: THERE WAS NO INDICATION ON DASH LIT PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING. BRAKING LOSS HAPPENED FIRST. SEEMS LIKE BRAKE LINE JUST SPLIT/BURST.

(IF ENGINE WAS HOTTER THEIR COULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE.) TRUCK IS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY STILL NOT FIXED.

THE REST OF THE LINES LOOK GREAT BUT THAT MAIN FEED IS RUSTED AND FAILED. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME IN ALL YEARS OWNING VEHICLES.

VEHICLE DEVELOPED A GAS LINE LEAK, AND UPON INSPECTION, DISCOVERED THAT ALL FUEL AND BRAKE LINES ON VEHICLE HAVE EXTENSIVE CORROSION AND ARE IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ARE IN NEAR NEW CONDITION, THE ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE AND GAS LINES IS CLEARLY A METALLURGICAL ISSUE AND TO THE EXTENT THIS PROBLEM IS, IS NOT A NORMAL MAINTENANCE ISSUE. THERE HAS BEEN EXTENSIVE REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM AND IT PUTS LARGE NUMBERS OF CONSUMERS AT RISK. THERE IS NO WAY THAT A WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE SHOULD REQUIRE REPAIR COSTS IN EXCESS OF $3000.00 FOR THIS TYPE OF SAFETY ISSUE.

I FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKE LINES COULD BE LEAKING BUT AFTER LOOKING AT THEM, SURE ENOUGH THEY WERE RUSTED THROUGH AND THE BRAKE FLUID WAS POURING OUT. IT TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES FOR ALL THE FLUID TO EMPTYED FROM THE MASTER CYCLINDER. AFTER SOME ONLINE RESEARCH I LEARNED THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR GM AND THE CHEVY SILVERADO AND OTHER GM TRUCKS. BRAKES LINES RUSTING OUT AFTER AS LITTLE AS 4 YEARS. I CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL AND LEARNED THAT IT'S A "REGULAR MAINTAINCE ISSUE". ALTHOUGH MANY 1000'S OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE OF BRAKE LINES RUSTING PREMATURLY. ESTIMATED COST TO REPLACE ALL BRAKE LINES $1500!!! STARTING FROM A WAITING LINE FOR MY ANNUAL VEHICLE INSPECTION I WAS DIRECTED TO STOP, WHILE TRYING TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO RESISTANCE AND NOT WARNING LIGHT. I HIT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO HALT THE VEHICLE AND ASK THE MECHANIC ON DUTY TO ASSIST IN DETERMINING THE PROBLEM. WHILE PUMPING THE BRAKE TRYING TO BUILD UP PRESSURE I WAS TOLD TO STOP AS FLUID RUNNING ON THE GROUND IT APPEARED TO BE COMING FROM UNDER THE LEFT FRONT HEADLIGHT AREA. AFTER IT WAS LIFTED ON THE RACK IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY STEEL BRAKELINE HAD DEVELOPED A HOLE DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. I WAS LUCKY AS JUST PRIOR I WAS ON A MAJOR FREEWAY AND TRAVELING AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE OF SPEED. THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT WHERE THE LINE RUNS ACROSS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT THAT IT APPEARS THAT WATER IS CONSTANTLY BEING DIVERTED FROM THE RADIATOR DOWN ONTO THE LINE. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A DESIGN FLAW THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED A LONG TIME AGO OR THE BRAKE LINE SHOULD BE STAINLESS STEEL TO PREVENT THE CORROSION. *TR

I CONTACTED GM CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FINALLY GOT TO A COST ASSISTANCE REPRESENTATIVE WHO INFORMED ME THAT GM WOULD NOT HELP DUE TO THE AGE AND MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE. REALLY, THE TRUCK IS 8 YEARS OLD AND OTHERWISE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. ALSO I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MILEAGE AFFECTS A NON-MOVING PART.I BELIEVE THE BRAKE LINES WERE MADE FROM INFERIOR METAL FOR THIS APPLICATION. TO ME, THE BRAKE LINES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ITEM SIMILAR TO THE AIR BAGS. I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK IN MY DRIVEWAY AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THERE WAS NO TROUBLE LIGHT OR INDICATION ON THE DASHBOARD OF ANY BRAKE PROBLEM. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK I SAW A PUDDLE OF FLUID UNDER THE MIDDLE OF THE TRUCK ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THERE IS A HOLE IN THE REAR BRAKE LINE AND ALL THE BRAKE LINES ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED AND ROTTING. I WAS TOLD BY THE CHEVROLET DEALER ALL THE BRAKE LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1000. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT MY BRAKES WILL FAIL FROM RUSTED BRAKE LINES AT ANY TIME. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, AND APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, STEPPED ON THE BRAKES. UPON DOING SO, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO PUMP THE PEDAL, AND DRIVE INTO THE NEXT PARKING LOT. I WALKED AROUND TO THE REAR OF THE TRUCK, WHERE I SAW A PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK, AND SAW THE FLUID LEAKING FROM A HEAVILY CORRODED BRAKE LINE. WHEN I GOT THE TRUCK HOME, I DID A MORE THOROUGH INSPECTION, AND DISCOVERED THAT ALL THE BRAKE LINES WERE HEAVILY CORRODED, AND WOULD NEED REPLACEMENT. I ORDERED AN AFTERMARKET, PRE-BENT STAINLESS LINE KIT. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO WAS ABLE TO REPLACE THE LEAKING LINE, AND A FEW OTHERS, BUT WAS UNABLE TO REPLACE THE LINES GOING INTO THE ABS MODULE DUE TO THEIR LOCATION ON TOP OF THE FRAME, UNDER THE CAB. I AM ABLE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK NOW, BUT WILL NEED TO FIND ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO IS WILLING TO SEPARATE THE CAB FROM THE FRAME TO REPLACE THE REST OF THE LINES. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES OVER THE YEARS, AND NONE HAVE EVER HAD A CORRODED BRAKE LINE. THE LAST TRUCK I OWNED WAS A 1993 CHEVY SILVERADO, WHICH I HAD FOR 15 YEARS, AND RACKED UP 300,000 MILES, WITH NO BRAKE OR FLUID LINE ISSUES, AND DRIVEN IN THE SAME NORTHEAST CLIMATE AS THE 2006 SILVERADO. JUDGING BY THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ ONLINE, DESCRIBING THE SAME PROBLEM I AM EXPERIENCING, I BELIEVE GM SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIRS. EXPERIENCED BRAKING FAILURE AND ACTIVATION OF ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WHEN BRAKING AT LOW SPEEDS. THIS CAUSES LONGER BRAKING TIMES AND DISTANCES AND I HAVE NARROWLY AVOIDED HITTING CARS IN FRONT OF ME, RUNNING STOP SIGNS, ETC. ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PHENOMENON, IT IS KNOWN AS UNINTENDED LOW SPEED ABS ACTIVATION - A COMMON PROBLEM FOR OLDER MODEL GM TRUCKS. ADDITIONAL RESEARCH HAS REVEALED THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2006 SILVERADOS, YET IT HAS YET TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER. PREVIOUSLY, I HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS AT 19,027 MILES AND AGAIN AT 26,058 MILES DUE TO UNTIMELY CORROSION. TL* CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH THE BRAKE LINE FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO REPLACED THE BRAKE LINES. APPROXIMATELY 34,000 MILES LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY SALT AND RUST ON THE BRAKE LINES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
