The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 146,000.

My truck has roughly 26,000 miles and the airbag sensing module on it corroded due to water gathering around it in the acoustic padding. It happens because water runs down a line that enters the cab and gets absorbed by the acoustic padding. This is a known issue as there is a recall for other states. My state is not one even though Louisiana is one of the wettest states and we also use salt in the winter when the roads ice. I’m glad I didn’t get hurt by this since it can cause the seatbelt pretentioners to fire and/or the airbag to deploy. This is the document from GM/NHTSA. OTHERS I KNOW WITH THE SAME AIRBAGS HAVE HAD THEM SUCCESSFULLY REPLACED BY THE DEALER OF THEIR VEHICLES, SUCH AS HONDA AND NISSAN, ETC. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT AN AMERICAN MANUFACTURER KEEPS OBTAINING EXCEPTIONS AND WAIVERS TO CORRECT THIS SAFETY ISSUE. IT'S BEEN OVER 2 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST NOTIFICATION FOR THIS RECALL AND I'M STILL WAITING FOR THE REPLACEMENT TO BE ACCOMPLISHED. THE NOTIFICATION CLEARLY NOTES THAT IF THE VEHICLE IS LOCATED IN A HIGH HUMIDITY LOCATION THE THREAT OF THE PROBLEM BECOMES MUCH GREATER. I LIVE IN ORANGE PARK FL AND THE HUMIDITY IS HIGH MOST OF THE YEAR. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY AIRBAG RECALL HAS BEEN DELAYED. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR OVER 2 YEARS FOR A RESOLUTION AND HAVE GOTTEN NOWHERE OTHER THAN RECEIVING A LETTER THAT TAKATA HAD FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY. THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! IT IS DANGEROUS FOR ANYONE TO RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT OF MY VEHICLE AND NOBODY IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THE DASHBOARD IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE CASE HOLDING THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IN MY 2009 CHEVY SILVERADO IS CRACKED AND BROKEN IN THREE (3) DIFFERENT PLACES, INCLUDING TWO (2) CORNERS. I WAS ADVISED THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE IN GM TRUCKS, AND THAT IT IS A STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WITHOUT ACCIDENT. I WAS ADVISED THAT SINCE OUR TRUCK IS PART OF THE TAKATA RECALL TO HAVE OUR AIRBAGS TURNED OFF, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE DASH HOLDING THE AIRBAG IS BROKEN AND DAMAGED. THREE-WAY CHEVROLET IN BAKERSFIELD, CA REFUSES TO TURN THE AIRBAG OFF, EVEN AFTER AGREEING THE CRACKED AND BROKEN DASHBOARD POSES AN INHERENT SAFETY RISK BY COMPROMISING THE ALREADY DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS.

SINCE SUBMITTING MY PREVIOUS SAFETY COMPLAINT, MY "SERVICE AIRBAG SYSTEM" MESSAGE IS NOW DISPLAYED CONTINUOUSLY AND LONGER INTERMITTENTLY DISPLAYED. I HAVE ALSO RECEIVED WRITTEN CORRESPONDENCE FROM TAKATA ANNOUNCING THEIR CHAPTER 11 FILING AND CONFIRMATION THAT MY VEHICLE MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE AIRBAG. THE NOTICE ALSO ADVISED ME TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL CAR DEALER TO GET THE DEFECT REPAIRED AT NO COST TO ME. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT ON 10-30-2017 FOR THE REPAIR WORK BUT WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THEY COULD NOT COMPLETE THE REPAIRS AS "GM HAS NOT ISSUED A FIX YET". WHAT IS TAKING GM SO LONG TO ADDRESS THIS CLEAR, WELL DOCUMENTED SAFETY THREAT? IT HAS BEEN AT LEAST A YEAR SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS ADDED TO THE RECALL. SHOULD I NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE? CAN THE AIRBAG BE DISABLED? GM IS NOT OFFERING ANY TIMEFRAME FOR RESOLUTION NOR ARE THEY PROVIDING GUIDANCE ON WHAT CAR OWNERS SHOULD DO WHILE THEY FINALIZE A SOLUTION. I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THIS OUT OF POCKET AND DO NOT HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION.

TAKATA RECALL, GM STILL HAS NO RECALL ACTION ON THIS THEY HAVE NO FIX AVAILABLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE AIR BAGS. THE GM RECALL NUMBER IS 2049151. GM IS CONTESTING THIS RECALL BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO JUSTIFY THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS. I HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH THIS VEHICLE I JUST WANT THE AIRBAGS REPLACED AS RECOMMENDED BY TAKATA AND IN THE NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V381. NEW BREAKS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP ON DASH BOARD FROM THERMAL EXPANSION AND MATERIAL STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE DASH BOARD TOP PLASTIC. ALSO HAS DIS-COLORATION ON THE AIRBAG PANEL PLASTIC PANEL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DASH BOARD. DASH BOARD AIRBAG PANEL LOOKS TO BE DETERIORATING AND MAY POSSIBLY FRAGMENT IN AN AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. I HAVE CONCERNS WITH FACIAL LACERATIONS AND CONTUSIONS IF A BAG DEPLOYS AND THIS PANEL ALONG WITH OTHER SHARP BROKEN DASH BOARD PLASTIC FRAGMENTS BECOME PROJECTILES FOR BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER ON THE UPPER TORSO, FACE, ARMS AND POTENTIAL BLINDNESS FROM AN EYE INJURY FROM SHARP DASHBOARD PLASTIC FRAGMENTATION INTRUSION. NEWEST CRACKS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WERE WITNESS ON A WARM DAY RECENTLY WHEN I ENTERED THE CAR I HEARD A CRACK AS I SHUT THE DRIVERS DOOR. THE AIRBAG I NOTICED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015 IN THE LEFT CORNER OF THE AIRBAG COVER, THE FORWARD MOST CORNER OF THE DASH THAT IS AROUND THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG PLASTIC PANEL RECENTLY SHOWS SIGN OF WHITE DISCOLORATION STREAKS THROUGH THE PLASTIC AND WILL NOT CLEANUP. PLASTIC LOOK AS IF IT IS DETERIORATING AND CHANGING COLOR. I'M VERY CONCERNED WITH THIS PANEL AS THIS DEPLOYS WITH AIRBAG ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. ALSO CONCERNED THAT THE DRIVER AIRBAG COVER ON THE STEERING WHEEL LOOKS TO BE MADE OF THE SAME MATERIAL AND THAT FRAGMENTATION MAY OCCUR HERE AS WELL IN A AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.

THE DANGER OF SERIOUS INJURY AND FATALITY FROM THESE AIRBAGS IS WELL DOCUMENTED, MY TRUCK IS OVER 7 YEARS OLD IN AN EXTREMELY HOT CLIMATE (TEXAS--116 DEGREES RECENTLY) WHICH INCREASES RISK AND YET CHEVROLET IS DELAYING--DOUBTLESS IN HOPES MORE VEHICLES WILL AGE OUT AND REDUCE THEIR COSTS--DESPITE THE RISK OF DEATH OF THEIR CUSTOMERS THIS DELAY ENTAILS. I HAVE VARIOUS CRACKS IN MY DASH. THERE IS A LARGE ONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASH. THIS ONE OCCURRED JUST THIS YEAR (2016). BUT THE OTHER IS MORE CONCERNING, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS UP AGAINST THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. THIS ONE HAS EXISTED FOR SEVERAL YEARS (2014 OR EARLIER). I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THIS BEING A PROBLEM UNTIL THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL CAME UP. I AM WORRIED THAT SHOULD I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT, THAT THE CRACKED PLASTIC WILL BECOME LOOSE DEBRIS, AND CAUSE ADDITIONAL HARM TO ANY PASSENGERS. AN INTERESTING THING I'VE NOTICED IS A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE DASH. THIS OCCURS AFTER I HAVE BEEN DRIVING WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON FOR A WHILE. WHEN I PERFORM A GOOGLE SEARCH, THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM. THE IMAGE ENDING IN 27, IS THE CENTER CRACK. YOU'LL NOTICE THAT IT IS SPLIT COMPLETELY FOR THE FULL DEPTH OF THAT PIECE. THE IMAGE ENDING IN 32, IS THE CRACK THAT SITS NEXT TO THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. I AM UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THESE CRACKS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING OR NOT. THEY JUST SEEMED TO APPEAR OVER TIME.

I GOT OUT OF WORK AND THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON SO IMMEDIATELY I TURNED IT OFF AND STARTED MY TRUCK AGAIN THINKING IT WAS JUST SOMETHING WEIRD THAT DIDN'T REGISTER RIGHT. IT HAS SENCE BEEN 3 DAY SO I LOOKED UP RECALLS ON MY TRUCK AND THE RECALLS WERE FOR MY 09 TRUCK BUT MY VIN DIDN'T QUITE MATCH THE "AFFECTED" VEHICLES. I WAS STATIONARY AND IT WAS SNOWING OUTSIDE. THE RECALL SAID THERE WAS AN ACOUSTIC PAD THAT PREVENTED THE SENSOR FROM WORKING CORRECTLY.

IN NOVEMBER OF 2013 THE SERVICE AIRBAG MESSAGE STAYED ON, TOOK VEHICLE IN AND HAD THE FRONT PASSANGER SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR REPLACED. THIS RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 40 MPH WHEN HE DROVE OVER A POTHOLE AND BOTH SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAGS DEPLOYED INDEPENDENTLY. THE FAILURE CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE SEAT BELTS, THE HEADLINER AND THE CEILING LIGHT. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS A POWDERY RESIDUE INSIDE THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS EXPELLED FROM THE AIR BAGS. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURE WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT AN ENGINEER COULD INSPECT THE VEHICLE WITHIN TEN DAYS AND THE RESULTS WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE WITHIN 120 DAYS OF INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER INSPECTED NOR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 38,000.
