TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE TOOK A LONG TIME TO SLOW DOWN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHEN BARELY DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STOPPED, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO JERK FORWARD. THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE 2000 WE HAVE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND WE HAVE REPORTED IT NUMEROUSE TIMES AND WONDER HOW MANY TRAGIC ACCIDENTS HAVE TO HAPPEN BEFORE IT IS CORRECTED?

I AM UNHAPPY THAT GM MADE A RECALL FOR THE PROBLEM MY SILVERADO IS EXHIBITING HOWEVER SINCE I DO NOT LIVE IN THE NEIGHBORING STATE I CANNOT HAVE MY PROBLEM FIXED. I ALSO LIVE IN THE "SALT BELT" BEING IN KANSAS, I LIVE 20 MILES FROM THE STATE OF MO. I AM HAVING THE EXACT PROBLEM AS THE RECALL - 05V379000. I WISH I KNEW WHO I COULD CONTACT TO AID ME IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM. IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS RESULTS IN A CRASH DUE TO CONSTANT CORROSION. IF YOU LOOK AT STATISTICS OF KANSAS CITY. WHEN COMING TO A STOP SIGN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO STEER INTO A PARKING LOT AND COASTED TO A STOP. I HAD NO BRAKES FRONT OR REAR. WHEN I STOPPED AT THE PREVIOUS STOP SIGN THE BRAKES WORKED AS USUAL. AFTER HAVING THE PICKUP TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP I WAS TOLD AND SHOWN THAT THE BRAKE LINES AT THE FRAME BEHIND THE LEFT TIRE HAD RUSTED THROUGH. THIS FAILURE CAME WITH NO WARNING AND AT NO TIME DID THE DASH BRAKE LIGHT COME ON.

I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 25 MPH WITHIN 100 FT. TOWARD A RED LIGHT. A TRUCK PULLING A TRAILER PULLED ACROSS THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE PEDAL HELD FOR A SECOND AND THEN QUICKLY DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT OF THE TRUCK, MISSING IT AND PUSHED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. REALIZING I ENCOUNTERED TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE I CAUTIOUSLY DROVE THE TRUCK INTO A MCDONALD'S PARKING LOT AT THE CORNER. THERE WAS NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHT COME ON. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK. ON THE DRIVERS SIDE UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR THE UNDERSIDE WAS SOAKED WITH BRAKE FLUID. WHERE THE 4 BRAKELINES ARE BUNDLED TOGETHER DIRECTLY ON THE FRAME UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR, ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAS A SPLIT IN IT. THE TRUCK IS PRESENTLY BEING EVALUATED FOR REPAIR.

AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE BRAKE LINES RUSTED TO THE POINT OF CORROSION AND FRACTURED. ALSO, THE CONTACT NOTICED THE PRESENCE OF BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO PARK THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO REPLACED ALL FOUR BRAKE LINES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 216,563.

MY OLDEST SON WAS DRIVING MY 2000 CHEVY 2500 PICKUP TRUCK WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL ALMOST WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR OF THE TRUCK. HE NARROWLY MISSED REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF HIM. HE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE VERY SLOWLY HOME WITH A VERY MUSHY FEELING BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I INSPECTED THE TRUCK I FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED SO BAD THE BRAKE LINE HAD RUPTURED AND WAS LEAKING FLUID UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. *JS

I HAD JUST PICKED UP A TRAILER AT U HAUL AND WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HILL IN FRONT OF THEIR STORE TO FINISH SIGNING THE PAPERWORK. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL I BEGAN TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I CAME CLOSE TO RUNNING INTO THE U HAUL BUILDING BUT THE TRUCK FINALLY STOPPED JUST IN TIME. I PUT THE TRUCK IN PARK AND GOT OUT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. I WENT TO THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK, LOOKED UNDER AND SAW NOTHING. I WENT TO THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AND LOOKED UNDER AND THERE WAS FLUID STEADILY DRIPPING AND A HUGE PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID UNDER THE TRUCK. I DISCONNECTED THE TRAILER AND CALLED A FRIEND TO PICK ME UP. ONCE I GOT THE TRUCK HOME, I BEGAN SEARCHING FOR THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK (AT THIS POINT I THOUGHT I HAD BUSTED A BRAKE HOSE) I QUICKLY REALIZED THIS WAS NOT A BRAKE HOSE THAT HAD RUPTURED. THE BRAKE LINE THAT RUNS PAST THE GAS TANK AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS RUSTED THROUGH AND HAD A HOLE IN IT. ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTING IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK A PICTURE OF THE LINE WITH THE HOLE AND WENT OFF TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP. ONCE AT THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD BY THE YOUNG MAN WORKING THE PARTS COUNTER THAT CHEVROLET DID NOT SELL REPLACEMENT BRAKE LINES. HE TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BUY BULK BRAKE TUBING AND MAKE MY OWN LINES. I LET HIM KNOW THAT THE LINE THAT RUPTURED ON MY TRUCK HAD OVER 20 BENDS ON IT AND THAT THE LAST FOUR BENDS WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO BEND BY HAND. I GOT NOWHERE WITH CHEVROLET ON REPLACEMENT PARTS. I WOUND UP ORDERING NEW STAINLESS STEEL LINES FROM INLINE TUBE. I REPLACED ALL THE BRAKE LINES. WHILE TAKING THE FUEL TANK OUT SO I COULD INSTALL THE NEW BRAKE LINES......IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT ALL OF THE FUEL LINES WERE RUSTING ALSO. I REPLACED THEM AS WELL. CHEVROLET SHOULD NOT BE USING SUBPAR MATERIALS FOR ANYTHING. POOR QUALITY BRAKE AND FUEL LINES WILL GET SOMEONE SERIOUSLY HURT!! SHAME ON CHEVROLET :( *TR

I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY BRAKES AND STEERING WHEN I AM BRAKING AND TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT. THE POWER STEERING COMPLETELY GO OUT . I HAVE TO USE ALL ME STRENGTH TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE TURN AND LET OFF THE BRAKE THE POWER STEERING COMES BACK THE STEERING WHEEL JERKS BACK IN PLACE. I HAVE REPLACED THE BOOSTER, SUPPLY LINES ON BRAKES, POWER STEERING PUMP AND SUPPLY LINES AND TRUCK STILLS HAS SAME PROBLEM. THE MECHANICS TELL ME THAT IT IS A DESIGN PROBLEM AND CHEVROLET WILL NOT RECALL AND REPAIR. ALL OWNERS OF THESE TRUCKS NEED HELP AS THIS IS A VERY DANGERS PROBLEM. LIMPED VEHICLE HOME, PLACED ON STANDS, PULLED WHEEL AND FOUND METAL END OF FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINE ADJACENT TO THE HOLLOW BOLT THAT CONNECTS TO CALIPER WAS NOW MULTIPLE LAYERS OF RUST SATURATED WITH BRAKE FLUID. ORDERED IN A REPLACEMENT LINE AND REPLACED. OLD LINE RETAINED AND EXCESS RUST FLAKED BACK TO REVEAL A PIN HOLE RUST THROUGH ROUGHLY 1/2 INCH ABOVE CALIPER MOUNTING POINT. RESIDUAL BRAKING AT TIME OF FAILURE WAS NOT CAPABLE OF STOPPING A VEHICLE QUICKLY IN TRAFFIC OR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THREE OR FOUR YEARS PRIOR REAR STEEL BRAKE LINES UNDER BED FAILED DURING A PANIC STOP WHEN DEER RAN INTO THE ROADWAY. RUSTED LINES WERE THE CAUSE BUT UNDER HIGH PRESSURE PANIC STOP CONDITIONS. MY BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT WARNING IN A PARKING LOT. CAREFULLY, I MADE IT HOME WITH NO BRAKES AND FOUND THE BRAKE LINES WERE ALL CORRODED AND LEAKED BRAKE FLUID. BRAKE LINES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MADE FROM NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. FIXING BRAKES ON THIS MODEL PICKUP IS A MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. ONE BRAKE LINE IS LOCATED UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK. *TR WHEN THE CONSUMER EXAMINED THE BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE, HE WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE EXTENT OF CORROSION ON THE MEAL BRAKE LINE. HE WAS ALSO SHOCKED TO FIND THAT FOR ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES, HE HAD TO REMOVE THE TRUCK BED, IN ORDER TO SEE IT. THE FIRST RUPTURE OCCURRED ON THE LINE RUNNING FROM THE METERING OR PROPORTIONAL VALVE TO THE REAR BRAKES. THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD SEE THAT AREA. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED DURING BLEEDING AND TESTING OF THE FIRST REPAIR. THE THIRD LEAK APPEARED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE LINE DURING THE SECOND REPAIR. ALL WERE DUE TO CORROSION IN WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. THE CONSUMER STATED THE LOCATION OF THE BRAKE LINES AND THE MATERIALS USED WERE TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND HE IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR PARTS AND LABOR. UPDATED 06/29/12. *JB
