MY BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT WARNING IN A PARKING LOT. CAREFULLY, I MADE IT HOME WITH NO BRAKES AND FOUND THE BRAKE LINES WERE ALL CORRODED AND LEAKED BRAKE FLUID. BRAKE LINES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MADE FROM NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. FIXING BRAKES ON THIS MODEL PICKUP IS A MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. ONE BRAKE LINE IS LOCATED UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK. *TR WHEN THE CONSUMER EXAMINED THE BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE, HE WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE EXTENT OF CORROSION ON THE MEAL BRAKE LINE. HE WAS ALSO SHOCKED TO FIND THAT FOR ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES, HE HAD TO REMOVE THE TRUCK BED, IN ORDER TO SEE IT. THE FIRST RUPTURE OCCURRED ON THE LINE RUNNING FROM THE METERING OR PROPORTIONAL VALVE TO THE REAR BRAKES. THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD SEE THAT AREA. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED DURING BLEEDING AND TESTING OF THE FIRST REPAIR. THE THIRD LEAK APPEARED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE LINE DURING THE SECOND REPAIR. ALL WERE DUE TO CORROSION IN WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. THE CONSUMER STATED THE LOCATION OF THE BRAKE LINES AND THE MATERIALS USED WERE TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND HE IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR PARTS AND LABOR. UPDATED 06/29/12. *JB

JUST BACKED INTO THE ST. CLAIR RIVER TO RETRIEVE SMALL BOAT. LOADED BOAT. AS I PUT MY FOOT DOWN ON BRAKE PEDAL TO MOVE TRANSMISSION TO DRIVE, BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR, GOT THE TRANS TO NEUTRAL, BUT NOT TO DRIVE. THE TRUCK AND BOAT STARTED TO ROLL INTO RIVER. PANIC SITUATION... JAMBED TRANS INTO DRIVE, AND WAS ABLE TO GET TRUCK OUT OF RIVER, WITH WATER LINE HALF WAY UP DRIVERS DOOR. ONCE HOME DISCOVERED BADLY RUSTED BRAKE LINE ABOVE FUEL TANK RUPTURED. REPAIRED... TWO MONTHS LATER, WHILE WIFE WAS DRIVING TRUCK TO WORK, BRAKE LINE BETWEEN MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS MODUAL FAILED. HAD ENOUGH! REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES ON TRUCK EXCEPT THE ONE OVER REAR AXEL. I STILL WILLD O THAT ONE ALSO. ABS/BRAKE LIGHTS ON DASH ARE STILL ILLUMINATED. STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THAT ISSUE.. ON 11/23/2011 AT 6:45 AM EST, I WAS HEADED DOWN A SNOW COVERED ROAD WHEN I NOTICED A PLOW TRUCK COMING TOWARDS ME AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I THEN HIT THE BRAKES AT NORMAL PRESSURE AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NEXT TO NO RESISTANCE, HAVING NO BRAKES I DOWNSHIFTED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SLOWING ME BUT NOT FAST ENOUGH, I COLLIDED WITH A FIRE HYDRANT AT THE TOP OF A STEEP EMBANKMENT ON THE SIDE OF THE AT APPROXIMATELY 35MPH AND KNOCKED THE FIRE HYDRANT OUT OF THE GROUND. HAD THE FIRE HYDRANT NOT BEEN THERE, I COULD'VE FELL MORE THAN 50 FEET DOWN TO MY DEMISE. LUCKILY, THE HYDRANT WAS SHUT OFF AND THE ONLY DAMAGE (BECAUSE THE PLOW FRAME ABSORBED MOST OF THE IMPACT) WAS THE FRONT BUMPER. I HAVE HAD TO PAY $75 JUST TO HAVE THE LINE PATCHED GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE TRUCK TO BE DRIVABLE, WITH IMMINENT FAILURE OF THE REAR BRAKE LINES ACROSS THE REAR AXLE AND THE FRONT BRAKE LINES TO THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH BOTH MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 (MODEL YEAR 2000) AND MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 (MODEL YEAR 1999). *TR

I WAS DRIVING MY 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 PICKUP AND PULLING AN EMPTY 16\' CARGO TRAILER, AND STARTED TO DECEND A 8% GRADE HILL. I HAD THE TRANS IN TOW MODE AND STARTED APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW FROM APPROX 50 MPH, AS I WAS GOING TO TURN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. THE BRAKES FIRST HELD AND THEN AS I HELD BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE CONSTANT THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I QUICKLY REALIZED I WAS IN TROUBLE AND PULLED THE TRANS TO 3 AND THEN 2. THANK GOD THERE WAS NO ONE IN FRONT OF ME MAKING THE SAME LEFT TURN AS I, AS THERE WAS A STEEP TREE LINED HILL TO MY RIGHT AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC AT THAT POINT. I STEPPED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND GOT THE TRUCK STOPPED BUT MISSED MY TURN BY APPROX. 100 FEET. I RECOVERED MY COMPOSURE AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES STOPPED SHAKING ENOUGH TO LIMP MY TRUCK HOME USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND 2ND GEAR. I WAS APPROX. 2 MILES FROM MY HOME ON A COUNTRY BLACKTOP ROAD. WHEN CHECKING OUT THE TRUCK BRAKE LINES FOUND THEM TO BE EXTREMELY RUSTY AND IN ONE PLACE SPLIT. I REPLACED THAT LINE ONLY TO FAIL A 2ND LINE WHILE BLEEDING THE BRAKES IN MY DRIVEWAY. AFTER REPLACING THE 2 LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS MODULE AND THE 2 LINES FROM THE MODULE TO THE FRONT WHEEL CYLINDERS, I AGAIN VENTURED OUT ONLY TO AGAIN LOSE MY BRAKES ON THE DOWNGRADE OF MY DRIVEWAY AGAIN, WHICH WAS THE LAST STRAW, AND I REPLACE ALL THE REMAINING LINES. PEDAL IS STILL MUSHY BUT THE BRAKES ARE HOLDING AND NOT LEAKING FLUID. I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THE TRUCK AND PUT MAYBE 3,000 MILES A YEAR ON THE TRUCK. I ALSO OWN A 1997 AUTOMOBILE WHICH HAS OVER 300,000 MILES AND NEVER HAD A BRAKE PROBLEM AND THE BRAKE LINES SHOW VERY LITTLE RUST, AND I DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ALL WINTER WHILE I MIGHT USE THE TRUCK A HALF DOZEN TIMES DURING ADVERSE CONDITIONS. FOR THE TIME IN 4 MONTHS, MY 2000 CHEVROLET K2500HD FULL SIZED PICKUP TRUCK HAS EXPERIENCED BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO RUST-THROUGH OF A BRAKE LINE. THE FIRST FAILURE POINT WAS LOCATED NEAR THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL IN THE VICINITY OF THE METAL LINE TO RUBBER HOSE CONNECTION, IN THE EXACT LOCATION WHERE THE METAL LINE RUNS BETWEEN THE FRAME AND THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE ANTILOCK SYSTEM'S WIRING TO THE RIGHT-FRONT WHEEL SENSOR. TODAY'S FAILURE IS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT DIRECTLY UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE ACTUAL LEAK IS IN A SECTION OF LINE THAT IS NOT OBSCURED BY ANY MOUNTING POINTS. IT IS OUT IN THE OPEN AND FULLY VISIBLE WHEN LOOKING INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHILE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. SEVERAL OTHER SECTIONS OF BRAKE LINE APPEAR HAVE MAJOR RUST ISSUES ALSO. THIS TRUCK HAS 45,454 MILES ON IT. THE ORIGINAL BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER FAILED AT 26,XXX MILES. THE VEHICLE'S WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, SO I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR. I HAVE NOTICED THE BRAKE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR OF THIS VEHICLE HAS A HISTORY OF TURNING TO A DARK COLOR WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD AFTER A BRAKE FLUID FLUSH, EVEN AFTER THE REPLACEMENT MASTER CYLINDER WAS INSTALLED. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SATISFIED WITH THE STOPPING POWER OF THE BRAKES ON THIS TRUCK. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NEW I ALWAYS FELT THE BRAKES HAD A VERY "SPONGY" FEEL. EVEN WHEN NEW THERE WERE A FEW OCCASIONS WHEN I EXPERIENCED 'AM I GOING TO BE ABLE TO STOP' SCARES. PURCHASED A USED 200 CHEVROLET SILVERADO K2500 4WD. THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATE AT 7MPH WHILE STOPPING. IT OCCURS AT EVERY STOP. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SPEED SENSORS PER THE RECALL WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER TESTED THE VEHICLE AFTER THE FIX AND FOUND IT STILL FAILING. DRIVING SILVERADO, DEPRESSED BRAKE AND BRAKES FAILED. I WAS TRAVELING SLOWLY SO LUCKILY THERE I DIDN'T STRIKE ANYONE. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED, AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS FLUID DRIPPING FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I TOOK THE SILVERADO IMMEDIATELY TO THE GM DEALER AND WAS TOLD MY BRAKE LINES WHERE RUSTED, AND ONE WAS RUSTED THROUGH. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE THAT HAD RUSTED LINES. THIS IS A FAILURE DUE TO COST CUTTING MEASURES BY GM. USING A BARE STEEL TUBE THAT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUSTING IS TOTAL IRRESPONSIBLE. SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART SHOULD NOT BE DESIGNED TO FAIL. *TR

TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE, FORTUNATELY AT SLOW SPEED WHERE PARKING BRAKE COULD BE USED TO STOP. IT WAS IMMEDIATELY AFTER EXITING A HIGH-SPEED INTERSTATE, HOWEVER, WHERE THE FAILURE COULD WELL HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS CRASH. MY 2000 CHEVROLET K2500 SILVERADO HAS 60,000 MILES. THE REAR BRAKES DO NOT FUNCTION AS DESIGNED. THE INTERIOR BRAKE PAD, ON THE DISC BREAKS, ONLY COME IN CONTACT WITH THE ROTOR FOR 1/2 OF AN INCH OR LESS. I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ENGAGED ALL THE TIME AND I THINK IT IS BECAUSE AN UNDUE AMOUNT OF BRAKING PRESSURE IS PLACED ON THE FRONT DISC BRAKES AS THE REAR BRAKES ARE CLEARLY NOT ENGAGING PROPERLY. I HAD MIDAS REVIEW THE BRAKES AND THEY CLAIM THIS IS COMMON. THE ROTORS HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE ALL THEY DO IS RUST SINCE THE BRAKE PAD HARDLY TOUCHES THE ROTOR. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP WHO ALSO SAID THIS IS COMMON. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY INVESTIGATIONS INTO CHEVY TRUCK ACCIDENTS AND HOW THE BRAKES FUNCTION? IN MAY (2007) I WENT TO NEW YORK AND DROVE MY SON'S 2000 Z71 SILVERADO BACK TO TEXAS WHEN HE WAS SENT TO IRAQ. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS NOTICED ON THE TRIP, BUT AFTER THE TRUCK HAD BEEN PARKED FOR APPROX 3 WEEKS IN MY DRIVEWAY, IT WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN I TRIED TO MOVE IT ACROSS MY DRIVEWAY WHILE I WAS EDGING. IT FELT LIKE THERE WAS SOMETHING HIGH-CENTERED UNDERNEATH IT. MY SON TAKES EXCELLENT CARE OF HIS VEHICLE AND STAYS CURRENT ON ALL MAINTENANCE, ALWAYS. AND, HE HAD JUST HAD NEW REAR BRAKES INSTALLED BEFORE HE LEFT. I HAD TO HAVE A TOW TRUCK TAKE IT TO A SHOP AND THEY REPLACED ALL BRAKES AND EMERGENCY BRAKES BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY WERE FROZEN WITH RUST. WHEN IT WAS BEING DRIVEN EVERYDAY, THE RUST NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO OXIDIZE ENOUGH TO COMPLETELY FREEZE THE WHEELS UP, BUT AFTER SITTING FOR A WHILE IT WAS LIKE IT WAS UP ON BLOCKS. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED FOR THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES RECALL. ONE OF THE BRAKES, DUE TO THE OTHERS NOT BEING DEFECTIVE WAS DAMAGED. TWO YEARS LATER, THE SAME DEFECT OCCURRED ON THE REMAINING BRAKES. DURING THE PREVIOUS RECALL REPAIR, ALL OF THE BRAKES WERE NOT SERVICED DUE TO THE DEALERS SPECIFICATIONS. THE DEALER STATED THAT SINCE HE HAS ALREADY USED HIS RECALL, HE IS REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, ALTHOUGH THE OTHER BRAKES WERE NOT A PART OF THE ORIGINIAL RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD DO AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE IF THIS IS A CONCERN OF THEIRS. THE CONTACT DID NOT AGREE TO ANY CHARGES AS IT RELATES TO ANY RECALL. GM'S RECALL NOTICE ID: IS 05068. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,580. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 95,000.

I HAVE A 2000 CHEVROLET, SILVERADO 2500 PICKUP TRUCK I BOUGHT NEW. WITH ABOUT 125,000 MILES . 2 MONTHS AGO I STARTED HAVING A PROBLEM. AS FEW AS 3 TIMES A WEEK AS MUCH AS 10 TIMES A WEEK. ONE TIME I WAS STOPPING AT A SIDE ROAD WAITING TO ENTER A HIGWAY AND THE TRUCK STOPPED THEN THRUST FORWARD INTO THE TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY I DID NOT GET HIT BUT CAME CLOSE TO A ACCIDENT. THE WAY TO STOP IT IS BY THROWING IT INTO PARK. YESTERDAY I STOPPED IN FRONT OF A CUSTOMERS GARAGE AND WENT THROUGH THE GARAGE DOOR AS THE TRUCK THRUST FORWARD. I CONTACTED THE CHEVY DEALER AND HAD THE MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED. NO GOOD. THEN WAS TOLD IT WAS THE POWER BOOSTER. NOT THAT. .TODAY THEY SAY IT IS THE SENSOR IN ONE OF THE WHEELS. WILL REPLACE TOMORROW.I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THAT WILL STOP IT FROM THRUSTING FORWARD. I HAVE SPEND MUCH MONEY SENSOR ALONE COSTING 600.00 AND THE GARAGE DOOR 760.00 MY BIGGEST WORRY IS FEAR OF THRUSTING FORWARD WHEN AT A CROSS ROAD. MY SON REAR ENDED A SEMI-TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK IN A SNOW STORM LAST WEEK. HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT. AIR TEMPS PREVIOUS WEEK WERE IN THE -20 TO -40 RANGE. TEMPERATURE AT TIME OF ACCIDENT WAS -15. I RAISE THIS AS INDICATED BELOW. *AK MY CONCERNS ARE: 1. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS $6000 DAMAGE TO OUR 2004 CHEVY K2500 CREW CAB PICK-UP TO INCLUDE GRILL, RADIATOR, BOTH QUARTER PANELS, HOOD, BUMPER AND FORWARD ENGINE COMPONENTS. THE IMPACT SPEED WAS ESTIMATED AT 25 MPH. THAT SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED THE BAG. I REALIZE THAT THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND MY INSURANCE WOULD HAVE COVERED THE BAG, BUT I THINK (AS DID EVERYONE ELSE WHO HAVE SEEN THE DAMAGE) THAT THE BAG SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. 2. ABS SYSTEM FAILED. TRUCK REAR END SLID TO RIGHT TOWARD TRAFFIC. MY SON WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL. CHOICE OF IMPACT WAS EITHER INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC, OFF ROAD DOWN DEEP HILL INTO FOREST OR REAR END TRUCK. NOTE: OTHER OWNERS IN AREA OF THE 1999-2000 PICK-UP SERIES HAVE ALSO HAD ABS SYSTEM FAILED. LOCAL DEALERS ARE AWARE OF FAILURE AROUND 100,000 MILE MARK BUT SAY THAT IT IS NORMAL. ABS LIGHT IS NOW ON. SIDE NOTE - WE HAVE HAD REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE TAKEN IT TO DIFFERENT DEALERS. PROBLEMS INCLUDE ONGOING SHORT IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN COLD WEATHER, 4 WHEEL DRIVE FAILS TO DISENGAGE ALTHOUGH LIGHT ON DASH SAYS IT HAS (DISCOVERED AT LOCAL REPAIR SHOP), COMPUTER FAILURE ON DEALER INSTALLED EQUIPMENT (NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT WAS AN OPTION).
