MY VEHICLE WOULD STALL OUT ON ME AT ANY TIME FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT SPEED I WAS DOING OR WHERE I WAS IT WOULD STALL OUT SO I WOULD HAVE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH NO POWER STEERING AND WAIT TO CRANK THE VEHICLE BACK UP. THEN DECEMBER 23 2008 I WAS ON MY WAY HOME AND IT COMPLETELY STOPPED I COULDN'T GET IT TO CRANK BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DEAD AND IT WAS AT NIGHT ON A HIGHWAY. I TOOK IT TO EVERY DEALER SHIP AND EVERY MECHANIC AND NOONE COULD TELL ME WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. FINALLY I LOOKED ONLINE AT RECALLS AND FOUND THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE EXACT MAKE AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE BUT WHEN I CALLED GMC THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE SO I WENT AND PAID OUT OF MY OWN POCKET TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. LUCKILY, THERE WAS JUST ENOUGH SHOULDER WIDTH THAT ALLOWED ME TO PULL OVER WITHIN 300 FEET. THE ENGINE RESTARTED AFTER A BRIEF COOL DOWN PERIOD BUT AGAIN I HAD NO IDEA AT THIS TIME WHY THE ENGINE HAD DIED. THERE WERE NO SERVICE ENGINE SOON (SES) INDICATORS BEING SHOWN. HOW OFTEN IT OCCURS, SINCE JULY 24TH 2009 THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON FIVE OCCASIONS. . ITS CONSEQUENCES, THERE HAVE BEEN NO CRASHES BUT SEVERAL NEAR MISSES HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILURES. THE DAY OF SEPTEMBER 17TH 2009 HAD TWO FAILURES. THE FIRST OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING ALONG DIVIDED STATE ROUTE AT 65 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STALLED BUT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OUT OF TRAFFIC AND RESTART THE ENGINE AFTER THE COOL DOWN PERIOD. THERE WERE NO SES INDICATORS BEING SHOWN. THE SECOND ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRED ON MY WAY HOME. I WAS A TRAVELING ALONG STATE ROUTE 35 WHICH IS A DIVIDED HIGHWAY BUT HAS A GREAT DEAL OF TRAFFIC ON IT. THIS HIGHWAY ALSO HAS SEVERAL STOP LIGHTS IN THE AREA OF BEAVERCREEK OHIO. I HAD STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND WHEN I STARTED TO ACCELERATE THE ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED. TRAFFIC BEHIND ME HAD STARTED TO ACCELERATE BUT SUDDENLY HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID HITTING MY STALLED VEHICLE. THE GROUP OF TRAFFIC THAT WAS BEHIND ME WAS ABLE TO GET AROUND ME LEAVING ME SITTING DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH MY 4-WAY FLASHERS ON. FURTHER TRAFFIC WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND ALMOST REAR ENDED ME WHILE I WAS STALLED. I PUSHED THIS 6,700 LBS. 4X4 TRUCK OFF THE HIGHWAY MYSELF TO THE SHOULDER AND WAS NEARLY HIT A COUPLE OF TIME DURING THE PROCESS. AFTER A VERY LONG COOL DOWN PERIOD, THE ENGINE FINALLY RESTARTED. THIS TIME THERE WAS AN SES INDICATOR AND I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE TO AUTOZONE WHERE THEY SAID IT WAS THE 'CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR' FAILURE. IT WAS BUILT JUST AFTER THE RECALL DATE SO GM WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN OFFER TO CHARGE ME FOR THE REPAIR. THE MAIN SAFETY PROBLEM IS THE SOFTWARE BUG THAT DOESN'T RECORD THE BAD CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. THE FIRST 20 OR SO INCIDENTS WERE ANNOYING. WHEN THE TRUCK STARTED SHUTTING DOWN WHILE GOING DOWN A 10% GRADE ON A TWISTING MOUNTAIN ROAD IT GOT SCARY. LUCKILY I WASN'T PULLING THE 15000 POUND TRAILER THAT I OFTEN PULL. THE PROBLEM ONLY OCCURS AT ONE PARTICULAR ENGINE TEMPERATURE AND IT DOESN'T SET A DTC. IT TOOK ME THREE MONTHS OF SEARCHING THE WEB TO FIND THE PROBLEM. GM WAS OF NO HELP DIAGNOSING OR FIXING THE PROBLEM EVEN WITH THE RECALL ON THE IDENTICAL TRUCKS THAT WERE BUILT JUST PRIOR TO MINE. MY TRUCK HAD THE POSITION SENSOR REPLACED IN 2002 WITH THE SAME DESIGN PART AS THE ORIGINAL. THE REPLACED PART LASTED TILL 2008. SEARCHING THE WEB SHOWS THAT MOST OF THE 2000-2002 8.1L ENGINES DEVELOP THIS PROBLEM AT SOME POINT. GM MAKES A LOT OF MONEY SELLING UNNEEDED PARTS AND CHARGING $85 TO READ NON-EXISTENT DTCS. AN 8.1L ENGINE IS MEANT TO PULL LARGE LOADS. WHEN THE ENGINE DIES THE TRUCK LOSES POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. MY TRUCK DIED AT LEAST 50 TIMES BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO FIX IT. I WOULDN'T LET MY WIFE DRIVE IT BECAUSE SHE WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE KILLED SOMEONE WITH IT. IT DIED GOING AROUND THE SAME CORNER 5 DAYS IN A ROW. TURNING A 7000 POUND TRUCK WITHOUT POWER STEERING IS A BIT OF A CHALLENGE. I AM A TEST ENGINEER WITH 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. WITHOUT THE HELP OF THE INTERNET THIS PROBLEM IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE. GM IS OF NO HELP. THE PROBLEM SETS NO CODES AND THE VEHICLE RUNS FINE IF IT WARMS UP OR COOLS DOWN FROM THE ONE TEMPERATURE. I REPLACED MY SENSOR AND THE VEHICLE NOW RUNS FINE. WHEN I CALLED A LOCAL DEALERSHIP, CONNELL CHEVROLET IN COPPERAS COVE, TEXAS THEY TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL "BECAUSE I COULDN'T HONESTLY TELL THEM THAT THE 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT' HAD CAME ON; AND THAT MY TRUCK WASN'T RUNNING POORLY (OR A WORD TO THAT AFFECT). I ALSO CONTACTED GENERAL MOTORS AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND CHARGED ME $420.99. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 37,546 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME BUT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. STARTING EARLY MARCH 2007, MY 2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD, 8.1L TRUCK BEGAN TO STALL IN MANY AND DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. I WAS FIRST STOPPED AT A LIGHT ON A BUSINESS TRIP THEN BEGAN TO GO AND SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGINE DIED AND VARIOUS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH AND SYSTEM WARNING BOX. FROM THAT POINT IT HAS CONTINUED TO STALL AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND DIFFERENT TIMES FOR NO APPARENT REASON. IT HAS RESTARTED EACH TIME, SOMETIMES AFTER JUST A MINUTE AND SOMETIMES UP TO 5 OR SO MINUTES. TO DATE IT HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED THE CAUSE AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO FIX IT. THIS IS DEEPLY TROUBLING DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY WIFE DRIVES IT A LOT AND CARRIES MY THREE CHILDREN WITH HER AND IT HAS CONTINUED TO STOP ON MAJOR ROADS, RURAL ROADS, AND JUST ANYWHERE IT DECIDES. THIS PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME BUT WAS FREQUENT ENOUGH TO BE OF CONCERN. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS LASTING SOME 2 TO THREE MINUTES THE ENGINE WOULD START. THE PROBLEM ESCALATED TO THE ENGINE STALLING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, SOMETIMES ON THE INTERSTATE AT SPEEDS UP TO 70 MPH. DURING THESE STALLS THE ENGINE WOULD SOMETIME RESTART ON ITS OWN WITHOUT TURNING THE KEY OR SHIFTING OUT OF GEAR. DURING TIMES OF STALLING THE ONLY WAY TO MAINTAIN SOME CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND TURN THE KEY TO ATTEMPT A RESTART. AT THESE TIMES THE ENGINE TURNING OVER PROVIDES ENOUGH COMPRESSION TO ALLOW THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES TO BE AFFECTIVE AS LONG AS THE STARTER IS ENGAGED. *JB

THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE ALTERNATOR FAILED. THE ROTORS AND BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE ROTORS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE. THE ROTORS COULD NOT BE TURNED BECAUSE THEY WERE HEAVILY RUSTED. THE LEFT POWER WINDOW FAILED, THE MANUFACTURER USED A STEEL CABLE FOR THE ASSEMBLY, WHICH ALLOWED WATER TO SEEP IN WHICH CAUSED CORROSION. THE LEFT REAR OUTSIDE AXLE WAS LEAKING. THE A/C IDLER PULLEY AND TENSIONER WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE. THE RIGHT POWER WINDOW FAILED. THE TIRES WERE CRACKING ALONG THE EDGES CLOSE TO THE RIM. GREASE LEAKED OUT FROM THE CV JOINT. THE REAR OIL SEAL WAS LEAKING. THE RIMS WERE DELAMINATING. THE CD WOULD NOT EJECT FROM THE PLAYER. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED, THE PASSENGER WINDSHIELD WIPER WAS LOOSE, THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE ACCELERATOR WOULD STICK SOMETIMES AND THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR WAS BROKEN. 2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD. 8.1 LITER MOTOR, ALLISON TRANSMISSION. THE TRUCK HAS MULTIPLE PROBLEMS THAT THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND FIX. *LA -HARD STARTING WHEN HOT. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND PARKED FOR 10 MINUTES, IT WILL NOT START. ENGINE TURNS OVER, BUT DOES NOT FIRE. AFTER AN ADDITIONAL 2-3 MINUTE WAIT, IT WILL EVENTUALLY START. THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS. DEALER HAD THE TRUCK FOR 1 WEEK AND CLAIMS HE CAN NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEY SUGGESTED REPLACING PARTS WITH NO GARANTEE OF THE FIX. -EXHAUST FAILING. THE EXHAUST WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO LOOSE BAFFLES. IT IS FAILING AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. DEALER AGAIN CLAIMS THE NOISE IS NORMAL. -EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I HAD IT IN FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALER CHANGED THE OIL AND HAD ME COME IN EVERY 500 MILES TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL. IT USED 1 1/2 QUARTS IN 3,000 MILES. THIS IS NORMAL TO USE THIS MUCH OIL. HOW EVER I TOW A TRAILER AND PLOW SNOW WITH THIS VEHICLE. DURING THESE TIMES OF TOWING AND PLOWING, THE TRUCK USES 3-4 QUARTS OF OIL IN 3,000 MILES. THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS LEAKS. THE DEALER AGAIN CLAIMS THERE IS NO PROBLEM. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH THE LARGE MOTOR AND HEAVY DUTY TRANSMISSION SPECIFICALLY FOR THE TYPE OF WORK I EXPECT IT TO DO.

TURCK ENGINE HAS A KNOCK THAT I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER AND GM THAT IT WAS SIMPLY A COLD START KNOCK. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY A PERSONAL FRIEND AT THE GM TECH CENTER THAT IT IS REALLY A PISTON SLAP, AND IS A RESULT OF THE PISTONS BEING TOO SMALL FOR THE BORE WHICH COULD LEAD TO ENGINE SEIZURE/FAILURE, AND THAT GM IS AWARE OF IT! THE TRUCK KNOCKS EVEN WHEN ENGINE IS WARM. I HAVE BEGGED FOR A REPAIR UNDER THE TRUCKS WARRANTY BUT HAVE BEEN DENIED. I AM CONCERNED THAT AT SOME POINT THE ENGINE COULD SEIZE AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND HARM TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. GM SEEMS TO THINK IF THEY PRETEND IT IS A DIFFERENT PROBLEM, AND IF THEY CROSS THEIR FINGERS THEY WILL SAVE MONEY AND AVOID A RECALL. THE DEALER INDICATED TO ME THAT THEY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND SO DOES GM BUT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME. AT ONE POINT GM WAS OFFERING TO EXTEND MY WARRANTY BUT RENIGD BECAUSE I WAS THE SECOND OWNER, EVEN THOUGH I PAID FOR THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY. PLEASE INVESTIGATE BEFORE SOMEONE OWNING ONE OF THESE TRUCKS DOES HAVE THE ENGINE SIEZE AND INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE HURT! INCIDENT DATE IS APPROXIMATE AS I HAVE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER MANY TIMES ON MANY DATES IN HOPES OF GETTING THIS PROBLEM FIXED BECAUSE THEY WANT ME TO GO AWAY. *AK
