I OWN A 2001 2500HD CHEVY SILVERADO AND LAST MONTH I HAD THE LEFT REAR STEEL BRAKE LINE RUPTURE AND AS A RESULT I LOST ALL BRAKING POWER. NEITHER THE BRAKE LIGHT COME ON AND THE PROPORTIONING VALVE DID NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY DURING THIS MALFUNCTION SINCE FRONT BRAKES LOST ALL POWER. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE ROAD WAS CLEAR, TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND THERE WERE NO PEDESTRIANS AROUND. THE PARKING BRAKE WORKED MARGINALLY SINCE I WAS CARRYING A LOAD OF WET SOIL HOME. I TRULY BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS DEFEAT WITH THIS GM TRUCK. THE VERY NEXT DAY I HAD THAT REAR LEFT BRAKE LINE REPLACED AND THE GARAGE TECHNICIAN SAID ALL THE REMAINING BRAKE LINES ARE IN A SIMILAR STATE. MY TRUCK ONLY HAS 61,000 MILES ON IT AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR ONE DAY ON MY WAY TO WORK. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THE PRICE TO FIX WAS $2,130.00 , I WATCHED A NEWS REPORT AND EVEN A SINGLE OWNER OF SIMILAR TRUCK WHO HAD IT WASHED EVERY WEEK HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE TRUCK SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED WITH A GUARD PROTECTING THE BRAKES.

MY 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD WITH 111,000 MILES HAD A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING IN MY DRIVEWAY WHILE MOVING THE TRUCK FROM ONE SPOT TO ANOTHER. UPON INSPECTION OF THE TRUCK THERE WAS NO BRAKE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR AND THE AREA UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT WAS WET WITH BRAKE FLUID. INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE LINES FOUND SEVERE CORROSION ON THE LINES. THERE WAS NO PARTIAL BRAKING EFFORT, BRAKING WENT TO ZERO. I WAS READY TO PICK UP A NEW 7600LB TRAVEL TRAILER THIS WEEK AND WE CAME CLOSE TO A TRAGEDY. LOCAL DEALER IN GETTYSBURG, PA SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL OR "SILENT RECALL".

HERE I AM 2016 AND THE THIRD TIME I HAVE TO REPLACE RUSTED CORROSIVE BRAKE LINES AND FUEL LINES. THIS TIME I ONLY PUT 3500 MILES ON THE TRUCK SINCE THE LAST TIME. THEY ARE ON THE VERGE OR BLOWING OUT, THE FIRST TWO TIMES THEY DID AND LUCKY WAS ABLE TO STOP. THE FUEL LINE IS GONE AGAIN ALSO. WHY??

WHILE DRIVING ON A RURAL COUNTRY ROAD I SOUNDLY AND WITHOUT WARNONG LOST MY POWER BRAKES AND STEERING. . STEERING WAS VERY DIFFICULT AND BRAKES WERE ALMOST NOT FUNCTIONAL. I TOOK A GREAT EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND APPLY THE BRAKES TO SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. IF I WAS TRAVELING IN TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS I COULD NOT CONTROL AND SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE.. I IMMEDIATELY PARKED THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY DEALERSHIP. THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS REPLACED. SO THE POWER STEERING PUMP MALFUNCTIONED (BROKEN SHAFT) WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERWAY.. THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION AFFECTED BOTH THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES AND THERE WAS NO WARNING. I FEEL THIS IS A POOR DESIGN. MINIMALLY THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF WARNING WHEN THE POWER STEERING AND OR POWER BRAKES ARE COMPROMISED. AS I UNDERSTAND IT THIS SAME ISSUE OCCURS WHEN THE SERPENTINE BELT FAILS. THE BELT WILL FAIL WHEN THE BELT TENSIONER DOES. AGAIN NO WARNING WHEN THIS OCCURS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET 2500 HD. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE BRAKE AND ABS WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000. I WAS LEAVING MY PROPERTY GOING UP THE DRIVEWAY, I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR AND NO BRAKES AT ALL. I HAVE CARS FROM THE 60'S WITH ORIGINAL LINES. PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOME ONE GETS HURT OR WORSE.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 CHEVY 2500HD AND COMING INTO TRAFFIC THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO CHANGE LANES JUST IN TIME TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SURE ENOUGH BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE RUSTY GM BRAKE HARD LINES. LEAKING AT THE MOST COMMON PLACE BY THE ABS PUMP WHICH IS ON THE DRIVER SIDE BEHIND THE FRONT WHEEL. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK HOME WITH USING ONLY THE FRONT BRAKES AND WILL BE REPLACING THE HARD LINES WITH STAINLESS LINES. CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER AND WAS QUOTED $1,500-$2,000....EVERYONE SHOULD SEND THE RUSTY LINES TO GM SO THEY CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING DOWN A RAMP TO HIGHWAY 41. POWER BRAKES AND STEERING DID NOT WORK AS THE ENGINE WAS DEAD. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE CRANKED REPEATEDLY TO GET IT TO RESTART. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT THAT I REMEMBER, BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS WITHOUT WARNING. FINALLY THIS YEAR AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY CRANK POSITION SENSOR. I LEARNED THERE WAS A RECALL (NHTSA - EA06016) FOR THIS BUT GM SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM IDENTIFIED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE READ REPORTS OF OTHERS THAT HAD THE SAME FAILURE BUT GM HAS REFUSED TO FIX SAYING THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED AS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED. I HAVE THE OLD SENSOR IF NEEDED FOR TESTING.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 SILVERADO 2500 HD AND WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKES THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AS EXPECTED. ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD TO PRESS VERY HARD TO GET THE VEHICLE TO COMPLETELY STOP. I AM EXTREMELY LUCKY THERE WAS NO VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AND THAT I WAS NOT GOING VERY FAST WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED! I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY REPAIR SHOP AND THEY FOUND A BRAKE LINE NEAR A BLOCK (UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT AREA) THAT HAD BLOWN A HOLE IN IT. ALL THE LINES AT THE BLOCK WERE VERY CORRODED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY STATED USUALLY THE BRAKE LINE BLOWS OUT IN THE REAR AND THAT MY REAR LINE LOOKED TO BE IN PRETTY BAD SHAPE AS WELL BUT THAT IT HAD NOT BLOWN YET. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY OR GOING ANY SPEED IN TRAFFIC I WOULD HAVE PLOWED THROUGH SOMETHING FOR SURE... I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS TYPE OF SAFETY HAZARD HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL! I WOULD THINK GM WOULD AT LEAST SEND OUT A WARNING LETTER OF THE FAILURE POSSIBILITY. I NOW FEEL THE NEED TO DO A RANDOM GOOGLE SEARCH FOR OTHER POSSIBLE LIFE THREATENING FAILURES GM DOESN'T FEEL THE NEED TO NOTIFY OWNERS OF. VERY DISAPPOINTED. *TR

EXTREME BRAKE LINE CORROSION WILL REQUIRE A COMPLETE BRAKE SYSTEM REPLACEMENT. THERE IS NO WAY THAT THIS TYPE OF CORROSION IS DUE TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PROBLEM WITH THE MATERIALS THAT GM CHOSE TO USE. NHTSA SHOULD FORCE GM TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES FOR INFERIOR AND DANGEROUS COMPONENTS. *TR

AS I WAS TRAVELING DOWNHILL, I WAS EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TURN INTO A BUSINESS THAT WAS "UPHILL" AN USED GRAVITY TO STOP. THIS WAS EXTREMELY SCARY. I HAD MY TRUCK TOWED AND LEARNED THAT MY BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT. 2014: I TOOK MY TRUCK IN TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE AND LEARNED THAT MY FUEL LINES WERE LEAKING. I HAD NO WARNING AND OBVIOUSLY I REPLACED THEM. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED MY AIR CONDITIONING TWICE. *TR

BRAKE, FUEL, TRANSMISSION COOLER, AND POWER STEERING COOLER LINES BECAME VERY RUSTY AND EVENTUALLY LEAKED. MOST LINES HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT THIS POINT, AND A FEW STILL NEED TO BE. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED IN SEPTEMBER 2005 WITH 72,010 MILES ON IT AND PROBLEM HAD ALREADY STARTED. FUEL LEVEL SENSOR HAS FAILED TWICE, AND REQUIRES REPLACEMENT AGAIN. POWER WINDOW MOTORS ON BOTH SIDES HAVE EACH FAILED TWICE. TRUCK NOW HAS OVER 150,000 MILES, AND I'M ONLY REPORTING BECAUSE MANY OF THESE SAME TROUBLES APPEAR TO BE COMMON ON LATER MODEL CHEVY/GMC TRUCKS. *TR

I WAS DRIVING APROX. 55-60 MPH ON NORTH BOUND 71 WHEN TRAFFIC SUDDENLY SLOWED DOWN,WHEN I PUSHED ON THE BRAKES THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR SO I TRIED TO PUMP THE BRAKES BUT THE TRUCK NEVER SLOWED DOWN, THE TRAFFIC WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME SO I HAD TO DRIVE OFF INTO THE MEDIAN ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND UP OVER THE CONCRETE CURB INTO THE GRASS AND EVENTUALLY CAME TO A STOP IN THE GRASS, LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CARS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD,AFTER HAVING IT CHECKED OUT I FOUND OUT THE BRAKE LINES WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY,I HAD TO REPLACE A RIGHT SIDE RIM AND TIRE, RIGHT SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM,RIGHT SIDE TORSION BAR, RIGHT SIDE RUNNING BOARD,AND ALL THE BRAKE LINES, AROUND $2300.00 IN REPAIR, THE MONEY IS NOT THE IMPORTANT THING IT'S THE LIVES THAT WERE ALMOST LOST BECAUSE OF FAULTY BRAKE LINES THAT DAY, PRESENTLY THE TRUCK IS WAITING FOR REPAIRS BECAUSE FUEL STARTED POURING OUT FROM UNDER IT, AFTER HAVING IT CHECKED I FOUND OUT THE FUEL LINES ALL NEED REPLACED AND THEY WILL HAVE TO PULL THE TANK OR BED TO REPLACE THEM ,SAID IT WOULD RUN ME ANOTHER $750.00 TO HAVE ALL NEW LINES AND HOSES DONE BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL BAD. *TR

I JUST FINISHED READING AN ARTICLE ON YAHOO AUTOS CONCERNING BRAKE PROBLEMS WITH CHEVY TRUCKS BRAKE LINES RUSTING. IN 2012 I FOUND BRAKE FLUID LEAKING UNDER MY TRUCK. A LEAK DEVELOPED IN MIDDLE OF THE LINE TO THE REAR BRAKES. I REPAIRED THIS LINE AT THIS TIME. IN AUGUST.14.2013 I HAD THE TRUCK HITCHED TO A 28 FT FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER (TRUCK IS RATED TO HAUL THIS TRAILER) AND WHILE MOVING IT ON A BACK COUNTRY ROAD I FOUND THAT THE ONLY BRAKES I HAD WERE THE TRAILER BRAKES. TURNED TRUCK AND DROVE IT HOME, PARKED TRAILER AND TOOK TRUCK TO LOCAL BRAKE AND MUFFLER PLACE AND PAID $292.02 TO HAVE THE 2 LINES TO THE FRONT BRAKES REPLACED. ONE WAS RUSTED IN HALF AND THE OTHER HAD A SMALL LEAK THE 2 LINES TO THE ABS DISTRIBUTION BLOCK FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED YET BUT THEY ARE IN BAD SHAPE TOO. IF THIS LOSS OF BRAKES HAD HAPPENED ON THE ROAD THE TRUCK AND FIFTH WHEEL (6000+ LBS & 8000+ LBS ) COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT POSSIBLY KILLING SOMEONE. *TR

WHILE HELPING MY SON MOVE TO REMOVE FURNITURE FROM FLOODED ILLINOIS RIVER HOME THE TRUCK I HAVE OWNED SINCE NEW LOST BRAKES . UPON INSPECTION I FOUND THE BRAKE LINE GOING FROM THE PROPORTIONATE VALVE TO THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE BRAKES HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND HAD FAILED. HAD TO REPLACE FRONT CALIPER , AND UPON TRYING TO FURTHER BLEED BRAKES ANOTHER LINE GOING FROM THE FRONT MASTER CYLINDER TO THE REAR PROPORTIONATE VALVE WAS ALSO LEAKING, UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I DECIDED BOTH LINES WERE RUSTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 67000 MILES AND THE BRAKE LINES SHOULD NOT FAIL THAT QUICKLY. ALL BRAKE LINES ON TRUCK ARE RUSTED AND GENERAL MOTORS HAS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. SEVERE CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES LEADING FROM THE ABS UNIT TO ALL FOUR WHEELS RESULTED COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BRAKES. THE LEFT REAR BRAKE LINE DEVELOPED A RUPTURE ROUGHLY 2 INCHES LONG ABOVE THE FUEL TANK THAT MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DEVELOP ANY BRAKE SYSTEM PRESSURE. THE FAILED LINE WAS REPLACED BY A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND THE REST OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE "INSPECTED." THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE LINE RUPTURED WHERE IT PASSES AROUND THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WELL, ROUGHLY 2 MONTHS LATER AGAIN DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION, AND AGAIN RESULTING IN COMPLETE BRAKE SYSTEM PRESSURE LOSS. THIS LINE WAS COMPLETELY DETERIORATED AS WELL AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST FAILURE. THE SIZE OF THE RUPTURES IN BOTH CASES MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DEVELOP AND SUPPLY ANY BRAKE SYSTEM PRESSURE TO THE 3 REMAINING WHEELS. IN BOTH CASES, THE FAILURE OCCURED WHEN THE TRUCK WAS MOVING AT UNDER 10 MPH AND APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. THE FIRST TIME I STOPPED THE VEHICLE BY RUNNING INTO THE DITCH, AND THE SECOND TIME I STOPPED IT BY STOMPING ON THE E-BRAKE AND SKIDDING TO A STOP. HAD THE FAILURE OCCURED ON THE HIGHWAY, IT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING A HEAVY TRUCK. THIS IS A TRUCK WITH A +9,000 LB GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT AND +10,000 LB MAX TRAILER WEIGHT RATING. IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH GM TRUCKS AND SUVS FROM THIS TIME PERIOD. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE TRUCK WAS LOCATED IN SOUTH CAROLINA FROM 2002 UNTIL 2007 AND WAS ONLY IN THE NORTHEAST FOR FIVE WINTER SEASONS OR APPROX. 65,000 MILES. I MANAGED TO MAKE IT HOME BY ALTERING MY ROUTE TO AVOID DOWNSLOPING INTERSECTIONS AND ALSO DOWNSHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION TO SLOW DOWN AS I APPROACHED THOSE INTERSECTIONS I COULD NOT AVOID. SINCE I DID NOT HAVE A VEHICLE LIFT OR THE PROPER TOOLS/EQUIPMENT TO MAKE THE REPAIRS, I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO AN AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR FACILITY. THEIR DIAGNOSIS: BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO SIGNIFICANT CORROSION. REPAIR BILL WAS $260 TO REPAIR/REPLACE THE CORRODED BRAKE LINE THAT SUPPLIED THE BRAKES TO THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL! THIS SAME CIRCUMSTANCE OCCURRED AGAIN ON 9/3/12 (I.E., SAME LOSS OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE (WITHOUT WARNING) & TOTAL BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE)! THE TRUCK IS AGAIN IN THE REPAIR SHOP AND THE MECHANIC STATED THE BRAKE LINE TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL FAILED DUE TO CORROSION & HE ALSO SAID ALL THE OTHER BRAKE LINES, EXCEPT FOR THE ONE REPLACED ON 6/22/2012, ARE CORRODED "PRETTY BAD." NOW THAT THIS HAPPENED I RECOGNIZED THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE BUT SOMEHOW REPAIRED ITSELF,BUT NOT TO THIS EXTREME.
