I PURCHASED A NEW 2001 CHEVY HD ON AUGUST 10,2001. THE TRUCK IS SERVICED EVERY 3,000 MILES AND IT HAS APPROXIMATELY 57,000 MILES ON THE TRUCK. IT STILL LOOKS NEW BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. AT APPROXIMATELY 22,000 MILES THE BACK ROTORS AND BRAKES WERE REPLACED THEN AT ABOUT 32,000 MILES THE FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED, AND THEN LAST SUMMER THE BACK BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE ROTORS WERE TURNED. ALSO SOMETIME WITHIN 30,000 - 45,000 MILES ALL THE BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS TWO DIFFERENT ALTERNATORS AND A WINDOW MOTOR. TODAY (APRIL 20,2012) MY WIFE AND I WERE GOING TO TOWN TO GET SOMETHING TO EAT, WHEN AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE PULLED ONTO A STREET THAT WE WERE ON BUT WAS GOING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND PULL OVER AND WHEN I DID THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. LUCKILY I HAD ROOM TO MOVE THE TRUCK TO GET OUT OF THE WAY AND AFTER SOME DISTANCE WE GOT STOPPED. WE NURSED THE TRUCK HOME AND ITS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AGAIN WITH SOME TYPE OF A BRAKE PROBLEM.I THINK THAT I HAVE REPORTED THIS BEFORE BUT A TRUCK THAT IS BABIED AND TREATED LIKE MINE WITH ONLY 57,000 MILES ON IT THAT HAS TO HAVE THREE SETS OF BRAKES (NOT COUNTING THE ORIGINAL), ALL THE BRAKE LINES COMPLETELY REPLACED BECAUSE THEY WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY. ROTORS REPLACED FRONT AND REAR AND ROTORS REPLACED AND TURNED A SECOND TIME, AND NOW SOMETHING BRAKE RELATED BROKEN AGAIN SHOULD GET SOMEONE'S ATTENTION. THESE TRUCKS AREN'T SAFE, AND NO ONE BUYS INTO THE ENVIRONMENT OR LACK OF DRIVING EXCUSES. I ALSO HAVE A 1997 CHEVY TRUCK WITH APPROXIMATELY 126,000 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL, A TRUCK WITH 57,000 MILES THAT REQUIRES TWO ALTERNATORS (NOT COUNTING THE ORIGINAL), WHEEL SENSORS,BRAKE LINES / ROTORS / BRAKES THAT YOU HAD BETTER NOT TRUST AND A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY TO KEEP THE THING ON THE ROAD IS NOT A QUALITY PRODUCT. *JS *TR

DRIVING ALONG AND ATTEMPTED TO STOP, WHEN THE BRAKES SUDDENLY FAILED. PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. UPON CHECKING THE TRUCK, THE FRONT BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED AS THEY TURN AND ROUTE OVER THE FRAME TO THE ABS UNIT WHICH IS MOUNTED UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT FLOOR. UPON INSPECTION, ALL OF THE LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. ONE LET LOOSE DUE TO THE RUST AND CORROSION, AND CAUSED A LARGE LEAK, RESULTING IN THE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKES FAILING. THIS IS A ONE OWNER TRUCK AND HAS NOT HAD ANY MODIFICATIONS TO IT. THE PLACEMENT OF THE ABS UNIT AND THE WAY THE LINES ARE ROUTED EXPOSES THE BRAKE LINES TO ALL OF THE ROAD SPRAY AND THEREFORE ROAD SALT, WHICH CORRODES THE LINES PREMATURELY. IF INVESTIGATORS WOULD LIKE TO COME OUT AND INSPECT THIS VEHICLE, CONTACT ME- IT HAS NOT BEEN TOUCHED AND IS AS IT CAME FROM THE FACTORY. THIS NEEDS TO BE HANDLED BY GM ASAP. THIS IS A CRASH WAITING TO HAPPEN.THIS HAS ALREADY PROVED TO BE VERY DANGEROUS, AS THE LOSS OF THE BRAKES WAS SUDDEN AND WITHOUT WARNING. THE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE, MAKE THAT VERY LITTLE BRAKING ABILITY LEFT INTACT. IF I WERE TO BE TOWING ANYTHING OR GOING FASTER, IT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A CRASH FOR SURE. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A 2500HD, WHICH IS USED BY MOST TO TOW LARGE, HEAVY ITEMS, AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO. BRAKES SHOULD NOT FAIL IN THIS FASHION. THIS IS A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM IN THE SNOW BELT AND THE OWNERS SHOULD BE AT LEAST WARNED TO CHECK THEIR LINES BEFORE A CRASH OCCURS. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL AND WARN OTHERS AS THESE TRUCKS ARE STARTING TO AGE AND WILL BE FAILING AT AN ALARMING RATE. THIS IS A SAFETY NIGHTMARE. THE METAL LINE RUNNING FROM THE ABS/PROPORTIONING VALVE TO THE REAR BRAKES IS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND FAILED WHILE DRIVING HOME. THERE IS ALMOST NO BRAKING LEFT ON THE TRUCK. A STOP FROM ~50MPH INCLUDING DOWNSHIFTING TO L1 AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE RESULTED IN STOPPING MORE THAN 10 FEET OVER THE LINE. THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELS MOST OF THE WAY TO THE FLOOR EVEN AFTER SEVERAL PUMPS. THIS IS THE SECOND FAILURE. THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD HAVE COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY IN REVERSE AND WENT TO STEP ON THE BRAKE AN THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I ROLLED TO THE END OF MY DRIVEWAY, ACROSS THE STREET AND THROUGH MY NEIGHBOR'S FENCE. MY EMERGENCY BRAKE ONLY SLOWED MY SPEED IN REVERSE AND DID NOT STOP ME. THE BRAKE LINE ON THE DRIVER SIDE REAR IS RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKEN OFF AT THE FLANGE AT THE REAR WHEEL. INSPECTION SHOWS ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO K2500 BRAKE FAILURE. DRIVING HOME ON A COUNTRY BLACKTOP ROAD, ROAD WET FROM RAIN BUT VISIBILITY GOOD. APPROACHING A 45 MPH CURVE I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE PEDAL WAS SOFT AND WENT TO THE FLOOR QUICKLY. THE TRUCK FRONT TIRES HAD NO BRAKES AND THE REARS LOCKED UP. THE TRUCK WENT INTO A 360 SPIN AND OFF THE ROAD AT APPROX. 50 MPH. THE TRUCK WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND INTO A SWAMPY AREA. UPON INSPECTION THE BRAKE LINES TO THE FRONT WHEELS HAD BLOWN OUT AND WERE EXTREMELY CORRODED. THE GM DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THE TRUCK WAS TOTALED. APPROX. $12,000 LOSS. *TR

I WANT TO REGISTER A SAFETY COMPLAINT WITH REGARD TO THE OEM BRAKE PADS THAT WERE INSTALLED BY AN INDEPENDENT SHOP ON MY 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO HD 2500. THE PADS WERE PURCHASED BY THE SHOP (LEVINE'S GARAGE) IN NEW WINDSOR NY FROM BARTON BIRKS CHEVY IN NEWBURGH NY AND INSTALLED ON MY TRUCK IN FEB 2009 IN ADDITION TO NEW ROTORS. I RECENTLY SMELLED BRAKE BURNING AND DISASSEMBLED THE BRAKES TO DISCOVER THE PADS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WERE PITTED AND SCORED. THE ROTORS SHOWED NO DAMAGE. I REPLACED THE PADS AND RETURNED THE DAMAGED PADS TO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD A ONE YEAR WARRANTY AND IT WAS PASSED THE WARRANTY PERIOD. THE PADS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE ARE FINE. BOTH SETS OF PADS HAVE ABOUT 90% MATERIAL STILL ON THEM. I BELIEVE THESE PADS ARE DEFECTIVE AND WOULD LIKE YOUR INTERVENTION.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER HAVING A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON HIS VEHICLE THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE BRAKE AND FUEL LINE WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED. THE MECHANIC ADVISED HIM THAT ALL OF THE LINES UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE SEVERE CORROSION. HE WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS INSPECTED FOR FEAR OF THE PARTS ON THE VEHICLE BECOMING DETACHED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 87,700.

BRAKE FAILURE. I HAVE A 2001 CHEVY 2500HD (ORIGINAL OWNER). I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. BRAKE LINE BURST NEAR THE GAS TANK DUE TO CORROSION. I PURCHASED A NEW 2001 CHEVY CREW CAB 2500 HD TRUCK IN AUGUST 2001. THE TRUCK NOW (OCT 2010) HAS 50,300 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED AND SERVICED REGULARLY. AT APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH REAR ROTORS AND BRAKES, THEN AT APPROXIMATELY 36,400 MILES I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT ROTORS, BRAKES AND THE ALTERNATOR. AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES THE DRIVERS DOOR POWER WINDOW MOTOR HAD TO BE REPLACED AND ALL THE BRAKE LINES AND SPEED SENSORS ON THE TRUCK HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW WITH 50,300 MILES, THE TRUCK IS SITTING IN MY DRIVE WAY NEEDING ANOTHER ALTERNATOR AND THE REAR BRAKES / ROTORS ARE WORN OUT AGAIN. SINCE I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK I HAVE ALREADY SPENT APPROXIMATELY $2800 ON BRAKES, BRAKE LINES, WHEEL / SPEED SENSORS AND NEW ROTORS AND REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR AND POWER DOOR MOTOR. THE TRUCK HAS STRANDED ME TWO TIMES WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED AND ONCE WHEN THE ALTERNATOR WENT OUT. IT APPEARS THAT THE DEALERSHIPS AND GM KNOW ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS BUT JUST TRY TO GET THEM PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD. WHEN I HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT ROTORS I OFFERED TO HAVE THE METAL / ROTORS ANALYZED TO DETERMINE WHY THEY FAILED BUT GM WASN'T INTERESTED. THEY PAID HALF ON THAT REPAIR AND REQUESTED THAT I LEAVE THE ROTORS WITH THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS LUCKY BOTH TIMES WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED BECAUSE WE WERE GOING SLOW AND ON RURAL ROADS WITH MINIMAL TRAFFIC, THE OTHER TIME THE TRUCK STRANDED US WE CAMPING ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND AND THE ALTERNATOR WENT OUT WHEN WE WERE ABOUT 10 MILES FROM THE CAMP. THESE TRUCKS ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEMS ARE VERY DANGEROUS. I THINK THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE A TECHNICAL REVIEW CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE ROTORS AND THE BRAKE LINES. WHEN MY BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED THEY CRUMBLED LIKE FLAKES OF RUST AND THE ROTORS BOTH FRONT AND BACK WERE DAMAGED FROM WHAT APPEARED TO BE OVERHEATING. THERE WERE SURFACE STRESS FLAWS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ROTORS. I HAVE OWNED OTHER GM PRODUCTS, AND CURRENTLY HAVE A 1997 CHEVY TRUCK WITH NO BRAKE ISSUES. *TR

I STARTED THE TRUCK, PUT IT INTO DRIVE AND PROCEEDED TO THE END OF MY ALLEY. LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK THERE WAS BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM A RUSTED THRU BRAKE LINE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK UNDER ABOUT WHERE YOUR LEFT FOOT WOULD BE WHILE SITTING IN THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO THE CHEVY DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME BRAKE LINE FAILURE IS NOT UNCOMMON IN THE VINTAGE TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TOLD ME MINE WAS THE 3RD TUCK HE TOWED TODAY WITH THE SAME CONDITION. EVERY MECHANIC COMMENTS ABOUT THE RUST ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. ALSO THE FACE PLACE FOR THE REAR AXEL THAT HOLDS THE OIL FOR THE REAR DRIVE HAS RUSTED THRU AND BEEN REPLACED ONCE BECAUSE THE LUBRICANT WAS LEAKING OUT OF IT. THIS WAS DONE THRU A CHEVROLET DEALER TWO YEARS AGO. THE PLATE IS AGAIN VERY RUSTED AND WHO KNOWS WHEN IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE TRUCK IS NOT DRIVEN VERY MUCH ANYMORE SINCE IT IS NOT RELIABLE. THE ONLY OTHER ALTERNATIVE THAT I HAVE IS TO REPLACE EVERY SINGLE BRAKE LINE WHICH IS TOO COSTLY FOR ME AT THIS TIME. CHEVROLET HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR LOW SPEED ANTI-LOCK BRAKE FAILURE FOR 2001 MODEL SILVERADOS. THE RECALL INCLUDES ALL RUST BELT STATES. I HAVE BEEN HAVING FAILURE OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM IN SPEEDS OF 5 MPH OR BELOW. THEY CLAIM THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, BUT THEY ADMIT THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME EQUIPMENT THAT IS ON MY TRUCK. HOW CAN THEY ISSUE A RECALL AND NOT INCLUDE ALL MODELS THAT HAVE THIS FAULTY EQUIPMENT. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THE CONTACT SENSED VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED, AND EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS CHECKED AND LOOKED SATISFACTORY. THE VIBRATIONS PRODUCED A RUMBLING NOISE THAT INCREASED THE HARDER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. FOUND FLUID ON FLOOR UNDERNEATH MOTOR AREA. CHECKED POWER STEERING RESERVOIR AND FOUND IT TO BE FULL. I FOUND I HAD LOST POWER STEERING, WHEN I PUT VEHICLE IN GEAR TO MOVE OUT OF GARAGE AREA, I FOUND THAT I HAD ALSO LOST MY BRAKES. (PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR) I WAS THANKFUL THAT I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY PULLING A TRAILER AT THIS TIME. NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES. I CONTACTED POWER CHEVROLET IN VALENCIA AND THEY TOLD ME NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THEIR LOCATION. WHEN THE VEHICLE ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS REMOVED FROM THE TOW TRUCK, A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE. HE STATED THAT IT HAD BOTH POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE DROVE THE TRUCK AROUND THE LOT SEVERAL TIMES TO DEMONSTRATE THAT EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE. AT THE CONCLUSION OF HIS LAST TRIP AROUND THE LOT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SUGGESTING THAT I CHANGE THE POWER STEERING PUMP. I WAS NOT COMFORTABLE ABOUT THIS SUGGESTION SINCE I HAD ALSO LOST MY BRAKES. THE ONE COMPONENT PART THAT AFFECTS BOTH POWER STEERING AND BRAKES IS THE HYDRO-BOOSTER. I HAD THEM REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND HYRO-BOOSTER. THEY CLAIM THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY RECALLS ON EITHER OF THESE PARTS. *JB

WHILE TAKING MY PICK UP IN FOR ITS 18000 MILE MAINTENANCE CHECKUP, THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT ALL 4 ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO DELAMINATION OF METAL FROM THE SURFACE OF THE ROTOR. AFTER INSPECTING THE ROTORS MYSELF, IT WAS OBVIOUS THIS WAS THE CASE. PRIOR TO THIS VISUAL INSPECTION, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS. TALKING TO VARIOUS MECHANICS, AS WELL AS THE HEAD OF THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT, I COULD NOT GET A BELIEVABLE ANSWER AS TO WHY THIS OCCURRED. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT GM WAS HAVING THIS SORT OF PROBLEM, BUT THAT IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THE REPAIRS MADE. SEVERAL DAYS AND $1200 LATER, I RECEIVED MY TRUCK BACK WITH WORKING BRAKES. HOWEVER, HAD THIS PROBLEM NOT BEEN FOUND AT THIS TIME, I'M CONCERNED THAT THE BRAKES COULD HAVE FAILED WITHOUT WARNING, WITH OBVIOUS CONSEQUENCES.
