WHILE TOWING A 30 FT 5TH WHEEL TRAILER THE FRAME VIBRATES FOR A PERIOD OF TIME BETWEEN 55 TO 65 MPH. FEELS LIKE A DRIVE SHAFT U JOINT FAILURE AS IT SEEMS TO BE PROGRESSIVELY WORSENING OVER SEVERAL RECENT TRIPS, BUT MAY BE DUE TO ROAD CONDITIONS. NOT PREDICTABLE BETWEEN ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION, JUST STARTS TO VIBRATE. CAN BE SEVERE ENOUGH TO BE STARTLING AT TIMES.POSSIBLY NHTSA #10021013 REFERENCE #3009. THE HOLDING CLIP FOR THE OIL PUMP INSIDE OF TRANSFER CASE BROKE WHICH ALLOWED THE OIL PUMP TO SHAKE INSIDE OF CASE AND CONSEQUENTLY RUBBED A HOLE THRU T CASE WHICH EFFECTIVELY EMPTIED ALL THE LUBRICATING OIL FROM T CASE RUINING MOST OF THE PARTS INSIDE. *TR

INTERNAL COMPONENTS WEAR A SMALL HOLE IN THE REAR OF THE CASE HOUSING ALLOWING THE FLUID TO LEAK OUT WITHOUT YOU KNOWING IT. ONCE THE FLUID IS GONE THE GEARS GRIND DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE THE TRANSMISSION LOCKS UP AND YOU SKID TO A STOP. I'VE BEEN TOLD THIS IS STILL AN ON GOING PROBLEM ALL THE WAY UP TO THE 2010 MODEL YEAR. *KB

THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE TRANSFER CASE THAT RESULTS IN A CLIP BREAKING LOOSE AND RUBBING A HOLE IN THE REAR HOUSING, ALLOWING THE LUBRICANT TO LEAK OUT, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE TRANSFER CASE TO FAIL AND POSSIBLY LOCKING UP THE WHEELS IN AN UNEXPECTED MANNER, CAUSING A CRASH.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN 65 MPH AND THEN PARKED, THE CONTACT NOTICED TRANSMISSION FLUID GUSHING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. HE LATER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE REAR TRANSMISSION ADAPTER, CAUSED BY A FAULTY UNIVERSAL JOINT. THE DEALER HAS REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 85,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE REVEALED A LEAK IN THE TRANSFER CASE. THIS LEAD TO DISCOVER A SMALL HOLE IN THE CASE. THIS IS CAUSED BY A PART DEFECT THAT BREAKS OVER TIME. USUALLY AROUND 85,000 TO 105,000 MILES. THE PART IS AN "ANTI-RATTLE CLIP" THAT PREVENTS THE INNER PUMP FROM OF COURSE RATTLING. WHEN THIS PART BREAKS, THE PUMP THEN RUBS A HOLE FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IF THIS IS NOT CAUGHT IN TIME, THE LUBRICATING OIL WOULD RUN DRY AND THIS WOULD LEAD TO A DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION. I WILL BE ORDERING A REPLACEMENT TRANSFER CASE. YES OLD PART WILL BE AVAILABLE. NOTE: AS OF YET, THE REPLACEMENT PART FOR THIS HAS NO MODIFICATIONS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. *JB

SECOND,@ 65K I HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY AS TALKED ABOUT IN ONE OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS I READ. THIRD, @ 95K MY TRANSFER CASE DEVELOPED A LEAK AND I LOST ALL THE FLUID. A CHEVROLET MECHANIC SHOWED ME A TRANSFER CASE THAT HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAD BEEN USED IN 4WD W/OUT FLUID IN IT. ANOTHER CHEVROLET MECHANIC TOLD ME HE HAD SEEN SEVERAL OF THESE AND THAT "JB WELD IS YOUR FRIEND". SO I PATCHED THE HOLE, AND 10K LATER IT DEVELOPED A SECOND LEAK IN A SIMILAR LOCATION AND ALSO ABOUT THIS SAME TIME AN ELECTRICAL PART (ABOUT $550) WENT OUT FOR MY 4WD. NOW AT 130K IT HAS DEVELOPED A THIRD LEAK! ALSO STARTING @ APPROXIMATELY 50K, MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS LOCKED UP ON ME SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE 4 CABLES ON MY TAILGATE. AFTER BEING A CHEVY MAN ALL MY LIFE I THINK I WILL LOOK AT TOYOTA. *NM

SOME TIMES WHEN I START MY 2500 HD CHEVROLET SILVERODO 4WD EXTENDED CAB TRUCK THE SERVICE 4WD INDICATER COMES ON AND WHEN I GO TO THE DEALER THEY TELL ME THEY DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS. IM THINKIN THAT ITS FALTY WIRING. IT ALSO MAKES AN AWFULE TICKING SOUND RIGHT WHEN I START IT TOO. ALL THE TIME.

PUMP RETAINING PIN ON THE TRANSFER CASE FAILED, PERMITTING THE PUMP TO WEAR A HOLE IN THE TRANSFER CASE WITH SUDDEN RELEASE OF THE ENGINE OIL. CHEVROLET IS NOT CLAIMING KNOWLEDGE. *JB
