I pulled the truck out of the garage in working condition, left it running while parked in the driveway. It emptied the entire brake fluid reservoir through a leak in the distribution junction on the rear axle, leaving the truck with no brake function whatsoever. Had I not parked the truck in the driveway, I would have been involved in a serious collision due to sudden complete brake failure.
While driving on US60 East of Lexington Kentucky I was preparing to turn left using the left turn lane. There was another car in front of mine and as I approached it I began to lightly apply the brakes. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor with no decrease in speed. Fortunately I was able to switch back to the through lane and avoid an accident. While I was able to avoid an accident there was definitely a risk of injury to myself and the occupants of the other vehicle. When I was able to inspect the vehicle I found that the brakeline adjacent to the fuel tank was rusted through which caused a complete brake failure. I do the vehicle maintenance personally and have since made necessary repairs to the brake system. I was aware of problems with the brakelines on this vintage truck being prone to failure due to rusting. As I was making repairs it was obvious the routing of the brakelines was such as to making the rusting more likely to happen.

MY ABS SPEED SENSOR GOT SHEARED BY BACK OF MY FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE IN WHICH I HAVE SEEN ON MULTIPLE SIGHTS A DEFECT THAT WAS DEEMED A RECALL FOR BEING POORLY SET UP ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE. SECONDLY, IVE SPENT THOUSANDS AND LOOKING ONLINE FOR A VARY SERIOUS ISSUE IVE BEEN HAVING WITH MY VEHICLE DUE TO INTERMEDIATE STALLING, BACKFIRING, AND VEHICLE DIEING DUE TO WHAT HAS FINALLY BEEN FOUND TO BE THE INFAMOUS CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. REPLACED MY COMPUTER, ALL 02 SENSORS, EGR VALVE EXC... THAN UPON LOOKING AND RESEARCHING, I FIND IT WAS A MAJOR ONE ON RECALL AS WELL FOR FAILING ALL THE TIME. I JUST FEEL IF THESE ARE FACTORY ERRORS AND BEEN ON THE RECALL, AND MY WOMAN WHO TRAVELS WITH ME THAT IS PARALYZED DUE TO AN ACCIDENT, I SHOULD BE ENTITILED TO THE RECALLS GIVING THEY WERE KNOWN FLAWS ON THE ASSSEMBLY LINE AND A DANGER TO OTHERS. WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLS OUT, IT STARTS CHOKING, BACKFIRING, AND BUCKING AND WANTS TO LOCK UP AND LOOSE CONTROL. NOT COOL. IVE BEEN CHASING THIS PROBLEM SPENDING THOUSANDS IN PARTS AND REPAIRS TO MAKE THIS TRUCK SAFE FOR WORK AND FEEL IF THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS FOR ALL THIS, WOULD BE NICE TO REAP SOMETHING OUT OF MY INVESTMENT IN THIS TRUCK

BRAKE LINES CORRODED THROUGH CAUSING AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND RESULTED IN ZERO BRAKING ABILITY WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A BUSY CITY STREET. EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED TO BRING VEHICLE TO A STOP. INFERIOR MATERIALS HAVE BEEN USED TO PRODUCE BRAKE LINES ON THIS VEHICLE. WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY I ATTEMPTED TO STOP DUE TO TRAFFIC TRAVELING ALONG THE ROUTE I WAS ENTERING. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE THE PEDDLE WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. MY VEHICLE IS WELL MAINTAIN AND I AM OFTEN COMPLEMENTED FOR THE CARE I TAKE OF BOTH IT'S APPEARANCE AND MAINTENANCE. THE IS NO OTHER AREA OF THIS VEHICLE THAT IS RUSTED AND THE UNDERNEATH OF THIS VEHICLE IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND IT HAS NOT BEEN SUBJECT TO ANY TYPE OF EXCESS WEATHER CONDITIONS. THERE IS NO REASON THESE LINES SHOULD HAVE FAILED LIKE THIS. I HAVE BEEN AN ASE CERTIFIED AUTO TECH FOR BRAKES AND CAN TELL YOU THAT IS IS NOT COMMON TO CHECK THE LINES OVER THE TOP OF THE FRAME DURING ROUTINE BRAKE INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE, ONLY TO CHECK FOR SIGNS OF LEAKS IN NORMAL LINE LOCATIONS AND SOFT LINES, CALIPERS AND OTHER HARDWARE RELATED TO THE WHEEL AREA.

I OWN A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO LS HD2500, ORIGINAL OWNER PURCHASED IN JUNE OF 2002, CURRENTLY HAVE 71,000 MILE, BEAUTIFUL TRUCK VERY WELL MAINTAINED. THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT BEING FILED ON THIS VEHICLE CONCERNING MY BRAKES. MY FIRST COMPLAINT WAS FILED IN MARCH OF 2014, WHEN MY BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH AND I WAS LEFT WITH NO BRAKES. AFTER SEARCHING ON-LINE, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THESE VEHICLES AND THERE IS A RECALL ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM. MY COMPLAINT TODAY ALSO HAS TO DO WITH MY BRAKES. ONCE AGAIN, I FOUND THAT SOME OF THE VEHICLES HAVE A RECALL, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM . THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE, CAUSING MY BRAKES TO NOT WORK. IF I WANTED TO STOP, I COULDN'T SLOW DOWN TO STOP, I WOULD HAVE TO BRAKE HARD TO STOP MY VEHICLE, IF I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN TO STOP, MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE, CAUSING MY BRAKES TO NOT WORK. I DID CONTACT GM, AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO HELP RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE BECAUSE MINE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH SOME OF MY YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL HAD A RECALL NOTICE. THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE THEY DO HAVE A BULLETIN OUT INFORMING THE DEALER HOW TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS THE BRAKE SYSTEM, VERY DANGEROUS, COULD BE FATAL. I TOOK THE NEXT EXIT OFF THE INTERSTATE PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE EXIT RAMP TO DISCOVER BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING ON THE GROUND JUST FORWARD OF THE DRIVERS DOOR. INSPECTED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL TO DISCOVER IT WAS EMPTY. ALL BRAKE LINES ON THIS VEHICLE WILL HAVE TO REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED COST FROM A DEALER AT $1500.00. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE IN A RECALL STATUS. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS , I WENT TO STOP BEHIND A CAR AT A STOP LIGHT AND THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO WARNING. I HIT THE CAR FROM BEHIND AND LUCKILY NO ONE WAR INJURED BUT MINOR DAMAGE TO THE REAR OF THE CAR WAS OBSERVED. AFTER THE INCIDENT, OIL CONTINUED TO LEAK FROM THE LINE UNDER DRIVER SIDE DOOR, THE WARNING LIGHT DID COME ON BUT AFTER THE ACCIDENT HAD ALREADY OCCURRED. THIS WAS THE FIRST FAILURE. BRAKE LINE WAS REPAIRED AND A YEAR LATER, THE SECOND BRAKE LINE FAILED ON MAY 23, 2014. WHILE PULLING BOAT OUT OF BOAT RAMP, I WENT TO STOP THE TRUCK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AGAIN , LUCKILY NOT GOING FAST OR DOWN AN INTERSTATE. AGAIN THE LEAK WAS FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR, BUT WAS THE OTHER PARALLEL LINE GOING TO THE ABS BLOCK. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I WAS VERY LUCKY TWICE. ALL BRAKE LINES WILL BE REPLACED WITH STAINLESS STEEL LINES. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER GM PRODUCT UNLESS THEY MAKE THIS RIGHT. *TR

ON MAY 9, 2014 I WAS BACKING UP TO HOOK UP TO A TRAILER WITH MY TRUCK. WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING SIGN OR INDICATION, MY BRAKE LINE BUSTED AND I HAD NO BRAKES WHATSOEVER. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. EVEN AT THIS SLOW OF SPEED IN REVERSE I COULD NOT STOP AND RAN DIRECTLY INTO THE TRAILER. MY WIFE WAS STANDING AT THE TRAILER DIRECTING ME AND LUCKILY DID NOT GET HURT BECAUSE OF THIS BRAKE FAILURE. I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO GET STOPPED, AND EVEN THAT WAS VERY SLUGGISH TO STOP THE TRUCK. I AM NOW FINDING OUT THAT THIS IS COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLE AND THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER. WIFE DID NOT NOTICE PEDAL SINCE SHE IS ONLY 5'1" AND DIDN'T HAVE PEDAL TO FLOOR. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC EARLY IN THE MORNING OR RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. GOT TRUCK HOME AND DID A THOROUGH CHECK OF BRAKE SYSTEM. LINE FROM FRONT OF MASTER CYLINDER TO ABS MODULE ON FRAME RAIL WAS RUSTED THROUGH. OTHER LINES ALSO LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE DUG UP FROM DAVEY JONES LOCKER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN. I'VE OWNED THIS TRUCK FROM NEW AND HAVE TAKEN GREAT CARE OF IT. MY 1968 CHEVELLE HAS BETTER LOOKING ORIGINAL BRAKE LINE ON IT. DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON BUT THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, AND NOT JUST BRAKE LINES FROM WHAT I HAVE READ. GM NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS THROUGH A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED, IF IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ALREADY. I HAVE A 2002 SILVERADO 2500HD WITH VERY LOW MILES(63,868), EXTREMELY WELL TAKEN CARE OF VEHICLE. MY PROBLEM OCCURRED, FORTUNATELY FOR ME, WHILE I WAS SITTING AT A STOPLIGHT. AS I SAT WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO TURN GREEN, MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WASN'T SURE WHAT HAPPENED AND THOUGHT MAYBE I'D PUMP MY BRAKES UP AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE. NO SUCH LUCK. I PULLED OVER INTO A GAS STATION AND LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK AND SAW MY FLUID LEAKING VERY BADLY, COMING DOWN OVER MY GAS TANK. SINCE I HAD JUST LEFT MY HOME AND WAS VERY CLOSE, I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT HOME AND HAVE A BETTER LOOK. AS I DROVE THE HALF MILE DRIVE, MY BRAKE FLUID COMPLETELY DRAINED DRY. FORTUNATELY FOR ME, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ON THE STREETS AND NO OBSTACLES IN THE WAY. ANYWAY, WHEN I GOT HOME AND LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK AND SAW THAT MY BRAKELINE LOOKED LIKE IT COMPLETELY EXPLODED AND WAS RUSTED OUT, I CALLED MY DEALER AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL FOR THESE BRAKE LINES, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE NEVER HAS BEEN. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THEM TO REPAIR MY BRAKELINE, SO I HAD MY TRUCK TOWED TO MY DEALER, AND THEY PRECEDED TO WORK ON MY TRUCK. AS THEY INSPECTED IT, I WAS INFORMED THAT "ALL" OF MY LINES WERE RUSTED OUT BADLY AND UNSAFE. THIS COST ME APPROXIMATELY $700 TO REPAIR ALL OF THE LINES, BUT MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT THIS COULD HAVE TURNED OUT A LOT DIFFERENTLY. WE HAVE 8 CHILDREN, 12 GRAND CHILDREN, AND FORTUNATELY THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY WITH ANY OF THE LITTLE ONES IN IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT CIRCUMSTANCES WERE WHAT THEY WERE. APPLIED PRESSURE TO BRAKE WITH ABOUT 100 FEET FROM LIGHT. BRAKE PEDAL DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. IMMEDIATELY I APPLIED PARKING BRAKE. VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND TO BOTH ACTIONS. THE TRUCK ROLLED THROUGH THE STOP LIGHT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. MAIN LINE FEEDING REAR BRAKES ABRUPTLY FAILED CAUSING PERSONAL AND PROPERTY DAMAGES. AFTER HAVING THE BRAKES SERVICED AND FIXED, AND THINKING THAT THE TRUCK WAS SAFE, THE POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. BOTH STEERING AND BRAKING WERE NON RESPONSIVE. HAD I HAVE BEEN DRIVING ON A RESIDENTIAL ROAD THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. HOWEVER, THE HIGHWAY GAVE ME AMPLE TIME TO SLOW DOWN AND GET MY FAMILY TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED AND DIAGNOSED. A NEW POWER STEERING PUMP WAS PUT IN. ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2013, I WAS FORCED TO BRAKE HEAVILY AT AN INTERSECTION. I FELT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATE AND THE TRUCK STOPPED. I PROCEEDED TO THE NEXT INTERSECTION AND WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 50MPH. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY DOWN SHIFTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO SLOW DOWN. LUCKILY, THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN THE RIGHT TURN LANE SO I MADE A VERY DANGEROUS RIGHT TURN NEARLY STRIKING VEHICLES IN ANOTHER LANE. I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE AGAIN AND ONLY THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE WOULD LOCK UP. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND DISTANCE. I THOUGHT THE MASTER CYLINDER WENT OUT BUT UPON FURTHER INSPECTION. A BRAKE LINE HAS SPLIT AND IS EXPELLING BRAKE FLUID. THE LOCATION OF THE HOLE IS WHERE THE BRAKE LINE PASSES DIRECTLY BELOW THE DRIVER'S DOOR BEFORE THE CONNECTION TO THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM. HOW IS THIS NOT A RECALL. AFTER DROPPING OFF A BOAT FOR WINTER STORAGE, I WAS LEAVING THE STORAGE LOCATION AND ATTEMPTED TO APPLY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. THE OTHERS ARE MOST CERTAINLY NOT FAR BEHIND. THIS VEHICLE IS MAINLY USED IN THE WINTER MONTHS. I AM GRATEFUL THAT THE PROBLEM SURFACED NOW BEFORE THE SNOWMOBILE SEASON WHEN I AM HAULING A 24 FOOT TRAILER WITH FOUR PASSENGERS AND FOUR SNOWMOBILES ON ROADS THAT ARE NOT IN THE BEST SHAPE TO BEGIN WITH. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD SITUATION TO SAY THE LEAST! I WILL NEED TO HAVE ALL THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT I HAD NOT LEFT THE DRIVEWAY WHEN THIS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE OCCURRED. AND, JUST AS A SIDE NOTE, THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK, PARTICULARLY THE CROSS PIECES HOLDING THE SPARE TIRE AND BRACKET FOR THE SHOCK ABSORBER, HAVE RUSTED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT IT WILL HAVE TO REINFORCED/REPLACED. CORROSION THIS SEVERE COULD BE EXPECTED OF THE SHEET METAL, BUT NOT THE FRAME.

THE TRUCK IS PRIMARILY USED FOR TOWING TRAILERS. ONCE IN 2012 WHEN TOWING A 10K LBS TRAVEL TRAILER A REAR BRAKE LINE THAT APPEARED SOLID DEVELOPED A HOLE AND RELEASED ANY HYDRAULIC PRESSURE. THE TRUCK WAS SAFELY STOPPED AND REPAIRED. AUGUST OF 2013 WHILE TOWING PWCS ON A TRAILER ANOTHER LINE THAT APPEARED TO BE SOLID BRAKE LINE DEVELOPED A HOLE AND LEAKED OUT THE BREAK FLUID. TRUCK WAS SAFELY STOPPED AND IS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE TRUCK APPEARS TO HAVE AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE BRAKE LINES BRAKE COMPONENTS FRAME AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS FOR THE AGE OF TRUCK. ON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE MOMENTS AFTER HAVING DRIVEN IT WITHOUT ISSUE, THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT SPONGY, AND WITH MORE PRESSURE, SUNK TO THE FLOOR. FLUID WAS FOUND TO BE RUNNING OFF OF THE TRUCK FRAME UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR. NO WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AT THE TIME. I HAD THIS HAPPEN SHORTLY AFTER I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED, ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO. I PAID GOOD MONEY BACK THEN TO HAVE THE 'STAINLESS STEEL' BRAKE LINES TO THE ABS HEAD REPLACED BACK THEN. REPEAT OCCURRENCE ON 6/22/2013. FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS IN APPROXIMATELY AUGUST OF 2010. BRAKE LINES SEVERELY RUSTED. HAVE KEPT UNDER WATCH, HOWEVER THE RATE OF RUST SEEMS TO INCREASE. BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND RUPTURED LEAVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT BRAKES. VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD AND ENDED UP IN THE DITCH NARROWLY MISSING TREES. BY SHEAR LUCK THIS FAILURE DID NOT INVOLVE BRAKING IN TOWN OR TO SLOW DOWN IN TRAFFIC. *TR

THE ORIGINAL FACTORY BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH IN VARIOUS PLACES. THE MAIN LINE TO THE REAR RUNS CONCEALED FROM VIEW AND RUSTED, THE LINES GOING INTO THE ABS MODULE ARE LOCATED IN AN AREA THAT DEVELOPS CORROSION TOO. MY BRAKE PEDAL FELT WEEK AND WENT TO THE FLOOR AS THE RESULT OF THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED . THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE COST ME A WEEKEND TRIP THAT I HAD TO USE THE TRUCK FOR, AT LEAST A $2,000 LOSS PLUS THE EXPENDITURE FOR THE REPAIRS. *TR
