The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering failed causing the steering wheel to become hard to maneuver. The contact heard an abnormal sound coming from the hydro boost area when the brake pedal or accelerator pedal were depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the intermediate shaft was faulty. The intermediate shaft was replaced however, the failure recurred. The contact requested the dealer to replace the power steering pump but the dealer informed the contact that the failure was caused by the power steering pump. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 115,000.

STARTED THE TRUCK AND PUT INTO REVERSE. THERE WAS NO BRAKE AND NO STEERING CONTROL. I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. HE WENT THROUGH THE STOP SIGN, CRASHED INTO A MEDIAN THAT SLOWED HIM DOWN, AND ENDED UP ON TOP OF THE MEDIAN. THANK GOODNESS THE TRUCK WAS EMPTY AND NO ONE WAS USING THE RIGHT-OF-WAY AT THE INTERSECTION. INSPECTION SHOWED YET ANOTHER CORRODED BRAKE LINE. THIS BRAKE LINE WAS OEM. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED AFTER THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT LOOK FINE AND ARE NOT CORRODED. IT APPEARS THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED TO CORRECT THIS SAFETY DEFECT. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED HYDRAULIC BRAKE FAILURE AT 51,848 MILES DUE TO CORRODED BRAKE LINES. THE LINES BURST IN AN AREA THAT WAS WEAKENED BY CORROSION AND FAILED UNDER NORMAL USAGE AND BRAKE LINE PRESSURE. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT FAILURE WAS EMINENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THERE WAS AN OPEN AND CLOSED INVESTIGATION FOR THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: DP10003 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). I HAVE OWNED A LOT OF CARS AND NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I HAD THIS HAPPEN EVEN IN THE OLDEST OF CARS OR TRUCKS, BEFORE THIS WITH ONLY 20000.00 MILES ON THE TRUCK I HAD TO REPLACE ALL FOUR ROTORS DUE TO SUCH BAD CORROSION THAT THEY COULD NOT BE CUT. AND NOW WITH ONLY 75000.00 MILES I HAVE TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES FOR THE SAME REASON. *JS

BRAKE LINING HAS PREMATURE RUST, IN WHICH, CAUSED IT TO LEAK AND FAILED TO STOP VEHICLE. I WAS THE FOURTH VEHICLE TO PULL UP TO A RED LIGHT, WHEN I NOTICED THAT I DIDN'T HAVE ANY BRAKES. THE SPEED LIMIT IS 45 MPH AT THIS ROAD LOCATION AND I WAS TRYING TO SLOW MY ACCELERATION TO COME TO A STOP. THE BRAKE WENT TO THE FLOOR ON MY FIRST ATTEMPT TO SLOW DOWN AND COME TO A STOP. I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO STOP MY TRUCK BEFORE HITTING THE SMALLER CAR IN FRONT OF ME! I SWUNG MY TRUCK TO THE BURM OF THE ROAD AND PASSED ALL THE VEHICLES STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT, EVENTUALLY GOING THROUGH THE LIGHT BY WAY OF THE BURM OF THE ROAD. MY DRIVER SIDE MIRROR WAS BROKEN IN THIS INCIDENT. THE BRAKES DID SLOW ME DOWN AND ALLOW ME TO COME TO A STOP WITH THE USE OF MY EMERGENCY BRAKE BUT, IT WAS AFTER MY VEHICLE PASSED ALL THE CARS STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT AND ME STOPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. LUCKY THERE WAS NO CARS IN THE WAY! THE BRAKES HAD SOME STOPPING POWER BUT, WERE NOT ENOUGH FOR THIS SIZE TRUCK AND THE PEDAL DID NOT ENGAGE TILL IT WAS JUST ABOUT TO THE FLOOR. *JS BROKEN LINING HAS BEEN REPLACED BY INSPECTION MECHANIC BUT, STATED HE WILL NOT INSPECT THIS VEHICLE UNTIL ALL THE LINES ARE REPLACED. HE HAS STATED THAT ALL THE LINES HAVE PREMATURE RUST AND COULD BREAK AT ANY TIME AND WILL NOT TAKE THE RESPONSIBLILTY TO SAY THEY ARE OKAY TO PASS INSPECTION. I ALSO, HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 FACTORY BRAKE ROTORS AT 14,752 MILES. THE BRAKE PADS WORE OUT PREMATURELY AND WHEN I HAD MY MECHANIC REPLACE THEM, I WAS TOLD THAT THE ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND PITTED PREMATURELY. I STILL HAVE THEM, I CAN'T BELEIVE HOW BAD THEY DETERORATED! I WAS SURPRISED WITH SUCH LITTLE MILEAGE THAT THE ROTORS AND BRAKES WENT BAD.

THE BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT WARNING, I.E., WERE OPERATING PERFECTLY FINE UP UNTIL THE FAILURE AND NO WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. HAD TRUCK TOWED TO OUR DEALERSHIP; ALL BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF ALMOST $1500. REGULAR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON TRUCK THROUGHOUT ITS LIFE BY THE SAME DEALERSHIP. GM REFUSES TO COVER COST. HAVE ANOTHER CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD, A 2004, AND WILL NEED TO HAVE DEALERSHIP CHECK THE BRAKE LINES ON THAT TRUCK AND POSSIBLY REPLACE THE LINES, FOR ADDITIONAL COST. COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED; COULD HAVE KILLED OTHERS. NEVER RECEIVED ANY COMMUNICATION FROM GM, CHEVROLET OR THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT I HAVE THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED OR INSPECTED. I FILED A COMPLAINT IN 2009 WITH THE NHTSA AND HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM THE AGENCY REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. IN THE SAME YEAR AS THE COMPLAINT, I HAD MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLACE A SECTION OF BRAKE LINE BY THE ABS MODULE THAT HAD FAILED DUE TO EXTREME CORROSION. THIS PAST WEEK I RETURNED TO THE SAME DEALER TO HAVE THEM REPAIR ANOTHER SECTION THAT HAD ALSO FAILED. I WAS TOLD THAT, DUE TO POSSIBLE LITIGATION THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE LINE AS THEY HAD IN THE PAST, BUT WOULD REPLACE THE ENTIRETY OF THE LINE FOR AN ESTIMATE OF $1200.00. THE SERVICE MANAGER ALSO STATED THAT FIGURE COULD GO HIGHER AS MORE WAS DISCOVERED. I CAN'T SEE PUTTING THIS KIND OF MONEY INTO THIS VEHICLE KNOWING THAT MORE FAILURES ARE SURE TO FOLLOW EVEN THOUGH THE TRUCK HAS ONLY 95,000 MILES ON IT NOW. GM KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM. THEY COULD CARE LESS AND THE CUSTOMER IS GOING TO FOOT THE BILL FOR THEIR MALFEASANCE AS USUAL. *KB

IN LATE DEC MY DIESEL FUEL RETURN LINE ROTTED OUT FROM RUST, AND WAS LEAKING DIESEL FUEL ALL OVER THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING OR STOPPED AT IDLE. I DIDN'T NOTICE IT UNTIL I STOPPED TO RE-FUEL AND REALIZED FUEL WAS DRIPPING FROM THE UNDER CARRIAGE OF THE TRUCK. I WAS ON TRAVEL FOR CHRISTMAS, ABOUT 500 MILES FROM HOME AND THERE WERE NO OPEN AUTO SHOPS AROUND THAT I COULD FIND. I WAS ABLE TO CUT THE ROTTED SECTION OUT AND BAND AID FIX THE SYSTEM WITH SOME RUBBER FUEL LINE AND HOSE CLAMPS FROM AUTOZONE. THIS FIX HAS SEEMED TO HOLD UP FAIRLY WELL FOR THE TIME BEING, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN USING MY TRUCK. FAST FORWARD TO LAST WEEK WHEN MY BRAKE LINE DECIDED TO BURST, SPEWING BRAKE FLUID ALL OVER THE ROAD AND THE UNDER CARRIAGE OF MY TRUCK. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND GET IT TOWED BACK HOME WHERE IT NOW SITS. I'VE BEEN DOING THE RESEARCH AND THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WITH THESE SAME RUSTED OUT LINE ISSUES ON THESE GMC VEHICLES. I HAVE YET TO CONTACT GM ABOUT IT BUT I AM SURE THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME AS THE TRUCK DOES HAVE HIGHER MILLAGE. RECENTLY I HAD A CLOSE CALL WITH MY 2003 2500HD SILVERADO. I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP BUT THE PEDAL JUST WENT TO THE FLOOR. I QUICKLY DOWNSHIFTED TO 2ND AND USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO ASSIST IN GETTING THE TRUCK STOPPED. I NARROWLY MISSED CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I DISCOVERED THAT ATLEAST 1 OF MY BRAKE LINES HAD RUPTURED DUE TO CORROSION. I'VE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AND THEY RECOMMEND ALL THE BRAKE LINES BE REPLACED DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE CORROSION IN ALL THE LINES. I WAS ABLE TO INSPECT THE PROBLEM AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE TRUCK ON THE LIFT. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION EXCEPT FOR THE BRAKE LINES. THIS IS MY PERSONAL TRUCK. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN KEPT VERY CLEAN INSIDE AND OUT AND IS ONLY USED LIGHTLY. I BELIEVE THE LINES ARE DEFECTIVE. BRAKE LINES DON'T TYPICALLY RUST OUT IN AN 8 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. I DON'T LIVE NEAR THE OCEAN, SO THE ONLY SALT IT MAY SEE IS IN THE WINTER MONTHS. THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED AND GM SHOULD STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT AND MAKE THE REPAIR. *TR

HAD IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, UPON INSPECTION (WORD FOR WORD FROM INVOICE) "BRAKE LINE FROM ABS TO UNIT TO REAR AXLE AND ONE RUSTED THRU FROM MASTER CYLINDER TO ABS UNIT, OTHER LINES FROM ABS UNIT VERY RUSTY ALSO, REPLACED ALL RUSTED BRAKE LINES, FREE UP BRAKE BLEEDS AND BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM, ROAD TESTED AND RECHECKED OKAY" THIS KIND OF FAILURE SHOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE, TRUCK WITH THIS LOW MILES AND AGE, REALLY? WHILE STOPPING AT A STOPLIGHT A MILE FROM MY HOME, I NOTICED THE BRAKES SEEMED SOFT ON MY 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD DIESEL WITH 95,000 MILES. AFTER COMING TO A STOP I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND FELT AND HEARD THE BRAKE LINE BURST AS THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GONE. USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE I WAS ABLE TO TURN AROUND AND MAKE IT BACK TO MY HOME WHERE I PARKED THE TRUCK AND IT HASN'T MOVED SINCE. I CRAWLED UNDER THE TRUCK AND DISCOVERED THAT THE RUSTY BRAKE LINE GOING FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS UNIT JUST BELOW THE DIVERS SIDE DOOR, HAD BUST OPEN AND FAILED. THE OTHER BRAKE LINES ALSO APPEAR VERY HEAVILY RUSTED, AND AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE I WOULD NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK AGAIN UNTIL THEY ARE ALL REPLACED. IN ALL MY YEARS OF LIVING IN NEW ENGLAND AND OWNING SEVERAL GM VEHICLES, I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE BRAKE LINES DUE TO RUST OR CORROSION. I BOUGHT MY 2003 SILVERADO NEW. NO COMPLAINTS UNTIL 2008 WHEN THE BRAKE ROTORS AND CALIPERS STARTED RUSTING.TOWARD THE END OF THE YEAR I REPLACED THE FRONT ROTORS WITH NEW AND EXERCISED THE CALIPERS. I REPLACED THE REAR ROTORS AND CALIPERS, INSTALLED NEW PADS AND BLED THE SYSTEM, FRONT AND REAR. ALSO NOTICED THE BRAKE LINES ARE SEVERELY RUSTED BUT DID NOT CHANGE THEM YET. I DROVE THE TRUCK FOR A WEEK AND WAS PLEASED WITH THE WAY THE BRAKES WERE WORKING. THEN THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON FOLLOWED BY THE REGULAR BRAKE LIGHT. EVERYTHING LOOKED NORMAL, FLUID LEVEL, NO LEAKS, BRAKES SEEMED TO WORK OK BUT WASN'T GOING TO CHANCE IT. I PARKED THE TRUCK AND CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE ONLY RECALL WAS FOR FRONT ABS SENSORS. HOW CAN A VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 35,000 MILES HAVE ITS BRAKES TURN INTO A BALL OF RUST ! MY WIFE BOUGHT A USED 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD FROM A DEALERSHIP ABOUT A MONTH AGO. WE HAVE TWO PROBLEMS WHICH SEEM TO BE COMMON WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST PROBLEM IS THAT THE ABS SYSTEM SEEMS TO ENGAGE AT LOW SPEED, CAUSING THE TRUCK TO CONTINUE MOVING FORWARD. I ALSO WOULD SMELL BURNING HYDRAULIC FLUID. I THOUGHT THAT THE BRAKES NEEDED BLED OR IT HAD A LEAK SOMEWHERE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK. THEY WERE ABLE TO TELL ME THAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE TRUCK NOT STOPPING WAS THE ABS SENSOR NEEDED TO HAVE THE RUST REMOVED FROM UNDERNEATH IT. THIS WOULD COST AROUND $300 DOLLARS, DEPENDING ON WHAT ELSE NEEDED DONE. THEY TOLD ME THIS YESTERDAY. THIS LEADS ME TO THE SECOND PROBLEM. I HAVE NOT INSPECTED REAR ROTORS OR PADS AS OF YET. WAS TOLD BY TECHNICIAN THAT CHEVROLET HAD PROBLEMS WITH ROTOR. AFTER REPLACING TURNED ROTOR AND INSTALLING NEW PADS BRAKES GO UNCHANGED. INSPECTION OF REAR ROTORS AND PADS WILL OCCUR 22 JUNE 2009. WITH NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS CONCERNING A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, GM/CHEVROLET SHOULD INVEST IN DEALING WITH CORRECTING THIS ISSUE TO AVOID LOSING THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS. ON MY 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD WITH VORTEC 8100 (496 IN3) ENGINE, THE POWER STEERING PUMP ALSO ACTS AS THE POWER SOURCE FOR THE BRAKE BOOSTER (I BELIEVE). THUS, MANY TIMES WHEN I HAVE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THERE'S A PARTIAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. IN ORDER TO FULLY REGAIN THE POWER STEERING, I HAVE TO LET MY FOOT UP OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS POWER-STEERING-PUMP-AS-BRAKE-BOOSTER SET-UP IS UNIQUE TO THIS ENGINE. SO FAR, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET BY WITHOUT EXPERIENCING A CRITICAL SITUATION. THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING WAS WORSE BEFORE I REPLACED THE SERPENTINE BELT TWO YEARS AGO (<10,000 MILES). I HAD GOODYEAR INSTALL A HIGH-QUALITY BELT THEY MANUFACTURE THEMSELVES. 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO BRAKE PROBLEM. CONTACT STATES BRAKES PULSATED IN REAR ROTORS. BRAKE WERE HEAVILY CORRODED AND DEALER REPLACED REAR ROTORS. *BF THE DEALER TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT SINCE THE USE OF ASBESTOS BRAKES HAD BEEN DISCONTINUED, BRAKE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE HAD BEEN REDUCED. THE DEALER WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT THE PAD MATERIAL FORMS DEPOSITS ON THE ROTORS CAUSING THE SURFACE TO BECOME LESS SMOOTH AND EVENTUALLY GIVING A PULSATING SENSATION LEADING TO POOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE. ON JULY 20, 2007 THE CONSUMER BEGAN EXPERIENCING THE PULSATING ISSUE AGAIN, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE BRAKE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO NON-USE, HOWEVER THE CONSUMER DISAGREED WITH THEIR FINDINGS, STATING THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. THE CONSUMER TOOK POSSESSION OF THE OLD ROTORS AND SOON DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR ROTORS WERE WORN TWICE AS HARD AS THE FRONT ROTORS THAT WERE ORIGINAL FOR THE VEHICLE. TODAY I WAS TOLD MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO (DIESEL, CREW CAB) NEEDED A NEW TRANSFER CASE. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 125,000. OUR COMPANY OWNS TWO OTHER SIMILAR 2003 VEHICLES (GMC MODEL). THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO BOTH OTHER VEHICLES. ONE AT APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MILES, THE OTHER AT 140,000 MILES. SOMETHING HAPPENS WITHIN THE TRANSFER CASE THAT CAUSES THE CASE TO BE PUNCTURED AND LOSE FLUID. THE CASE OVERHEATS AND EVENTUALLY THE VEHICLE SEIZES UP. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION IS $3,200. IN ADDITION IT CAUSES THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE TO FAIL, RESULTING IN ANOTHER $500 OF DAMAGE. I ASSUME THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES NO LONGER WORKS ONCE THIS HAPPENS. I WONDER HOW MANY VEHICLES THIS IS HAPPENING TO. ALL 3 OF OUR 2003 MODELS EXPERIENCED THIS. WE WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY TRANSFER CASES AT THE JUNK YARDS. THE LAST REPAIR WE HAD FOR THIS TOOK 2 WEEKS TO GET THE PARTS - THERE ARE NONE IN STOCK APPARENTLY. ALL OF THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THESE VEHICLES AND IT MAY BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IF IT DOES INDEED CAUSE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE TO FAIL. IT TOOK 2 WEEKS AT THE DEALER TO FIGURE OUT THAT THE DAMAGED TRANSFER CASE WAS CAUSING THE MODULES TO FAIL. ARE YOU GETTING LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS? IS THERE A SILENT RECALL OR CAMPAIGN COVERING THIS PROBLEM? IT IS HARD TO PAY THIS KIND OF MONEY ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS A $700/MONTH PAYMENT AND WAS PRESUMABLY PURCHASED FOR IT'S DURABILITY AND SAFETY. *NM
