Truck keeps losing trailer brakes, intermittent as i am towing a 10,000 lb camper. Very unsafe

Jun 4, 2025

While pulling my Vilano fifth wheel trailer to Alabama from my home state of Texas the driver information center alerted me that the trailer brakes were disconnected. Then a short while later it alerted that trailer brakes were connected. This situation continued for the entire trip to Alabama. When the info center indicated trailer brakes were disconnected, they were indeed not working. Several times I almost rear ended cars stopping in front of me. (The vehicle had a recall notice urging to take it in and replace the brake module shortly after purchasing it. I did this.) Once I arrived in Alabama I took the vehicle to the Chevrolet dealership in Foley, Alabama to check the braking system. They told me there was no problem with the braking system. I retrurned to my home in Little Elm, Texas with the problem occurring the entire trip. I finally made it home and today took the vehicle to James Wood Chevrolet in Denton, Texas to have the braking systme checked again. They told me there was nothing wrong with the braking system. The service writer did say that because the trailer has LED lights the braking system does not recognize the voltage from the trailer and that is why the brakes are disconnecting. Please help me find out how to correct this extremely dangerous condition while I am towing my 16,000 pound fifth wheel trailer.

Brake pad failure, at 22,000 miles brake pads are almost worn out and leave extreme amounts of brake dust on wheels. This issue has been happening since 500 miles. Was told by dealer that it's a cheaper pad that the manufacture uses and the wear is normal. Steering wheel shakes when brakes are applied and when you're pulling a load the vehicle starts vibrating and jumping. Now rotors are warped due to the faulty pads wearing out so soon. Dealer and GM refuses to fix it, dealer says it's not covered and not a safety issue and GM has no explanation for their rejection the claim.

When hooked to 5th wheel trailer the brakes work good for a day then info center says check trailer brakes. The trailer bakes are not operational at that time. A few minutes later trailer brakes are back working again. The truck keeps shutting off the trailer brakes and sometimes they do not come back on at all. It happens every time I hook up to 5th wheel trailer. I have had it back to dealership 6 times and they can’t fix it.

While towing our 25ft travel trailer, I began getting warning from the trailer brake controller which repeatedly disconnected and, thankfully reconnected them after a brief interval. Luckily, the times when I had no trailer brakes did not require rapid stops. That said, towing a 7000 # trailer thru the mountains in a driving rain storm with no brakes randomly caused a bit of concern. After researching this I find this is a known defect and has TSB’s and voluntary recalls in place. (TSB 23-NA-149 and N232414840 respectively) However I was never notified by GM as my VIN was not included in the above. We could have been seriously injured or worse. This tsb is almost 2 years old. Why were we not informed/included? Our issue is identical to the tsb.

Intermittent loss of trailer brakes. Trailer has small break away battery

Mar 22, 2025

Intermittent lose of trailer brakes.

Mar 21, 2025

My trailer brake controller routinely does not allow me to adjust the brake gain. Multiple times (and on recorded video), I’ve had instances where I could not increase gain while hauling heavy loads in the trailer and this has caused me to lose my ability to stop the vehicle effectively. This has nearly cause accidents a few times while hauling on the interstate, and down my mountain road. The driver must be able to adjust trailer gain at any point while operating the vehicle. This issue has happened with multiple trailers. I’ve taken the vehicle in multiple times and had the brake controller components replaced but this issue still exists and the dealerships are unable to resolve. I was informed I have trailer issues even though this only occurs in this vehicle while towing and not other vehicles pulling the trailers. This is a major safety issue and will cause an accident if it isn’t resolved. My only option at this point is to purchase an aftermarket brake controller as my factory brake controller is unsafe. I have multiple videos of this issue and nearly had the trailer push me over my mountain from the issue. This issue has happened since I purchased the vehicle and continues to happen. There are multiple service records which show I requested the brake controller to be fixed. This isn’t a one time date or speed. I’m unable to upload videos I’ve taken on my phone but I can send them in. Reach out to [XXX] for videos. The manufacturer and service centers aren’t helping resolve this. Intermittent lose of trailer brakes. Dealerships are unable to duplicate issue, will not replace under factory warranty. Chevy has not issued a recall for this specific vin. But other 2024 Chevy 2500 have had recalls for it. Would like a recall for my vin die to this being an issue if an accident occurs. Traveling with multiple 10K pound trailers and no brakes.

Mar 20, 2025

intermittent lose of trailer brakes.

Mar 20, 2025

Intermittent lose of trailer brakes. Dealer failed to diagnose and fix issues. Stayed if they can not replicate it, they will not warranty it.

Mar 18, 2025

Trailer brake control module in vehicle will have intermittent loss of trailer brakes. Dealership stated they will not fix the issue if they are unable to replicate it. Even with video or picture evidence. Dealership has been uncooperative during the process.

Mar 17, 2025

Vehicle’s braking system for the trailer constantly disconnects while driving. The trailer will then lose all braking capabilities. Multiple service trailer brake system, check trailer wiring harness, trailer brake connected messages. Issues started shortly after purchasing the truck new at only 55 miles on the odometer

Drove to a residence to make a delivery. Turned truck back on and went to back out of driveway and the truck started shaking very violently and could not turn truck right or left. Chevrolet technician is stating the power steering pump fell apart sending metal through engine.

Oct 30, 2024 Crash

I was towing a dump trailer with gravel in it down a gravel road grade (downhill around 5-7mph) and received a warning on the DTC about the trailer brake being disconnected. All of the lights on the trailer were still working, however the trailer brakes no longer functioned and all of the braking was transferred to the truck. The trailer slowly pushed the rear end of the truck around causing the vehicle to jackknife and causing significant damage to the bumper and bed. After researching this post incident, there appears to be numerous complaints and TSB from chevy regarding a faulty brake controller when towing a trailer where the voltage can backfeed into the vehicle causing the vehicle brake controller to disable. Currently working with insurance to come up with a damage quote. Bulletin # 23-NA-149

Sep 27, 2024

While driving with a trailer connected the display in the truck will say trailer disconnected. Then the light will go away and come back on. The trailer plug and the trailer are connected and the plug is tight. When this happens the trailer braking system is disabled (trailer has no brakes) I can plug the same trailer to Ford or Dodge with no issues. Have had the Chevy to the dealer 4 times now and they are unable to duplicate the problem. I have researched the problem on the internet and there are a lot of discussions of other people having the same issue. GMC has replaced the trailer control module, but this did not fix my problem. I am at the point the dealer and GMC are giving me the run around. I bought this truck for commercial use and frequently haul trailers. It is very unsafe when the brakes on the trailer are disabled.

I would like to report a hazardous issue with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado trailer braking power mode. The trailer braking system turns on and off when the loaded trailer is connected; this represents a security hazard since this truck is used for work and we move heavy pieces of metal and glass. This issue was reported several times to the dealership Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet in Coconut Creek, FL. Also, the manufacturer provided a letter indicating the replacement of some parts. As indicated, I took the truck to Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet in Coconut Creek, FL, on [XXX] for the corresponding service; however, the truck is still presenting the same issues. We tried different trailers, including a U-Haul trailer, and still had the same dysfunctionality. Please advise how to proceed. When pulling trailer trailer brakes keep disconnecting

Jul 5, 2024

When pulling trailers I frequently get warning to check trailer wiring. I have gotten this warning with every trailer I have towed to include, my travel trailer(camper), livestock trailer, car hauler trailer and enclosed cargo trailer. It is intermittent but frequent. I am unsure if trailer brakes will engage during this failure.

Jun 9, 2024

Charging system failed The system failed with no warning, we were traveling on a country curvy road and about to descend a grade. With the charging system failure, the truck lost power to brakes and steering. It's at the dealer, being inspected etc. No warning lights or message until the failure occured, then a battery light appeared and a charging system failed message.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the brake failed to function as intended. The contact stated that the failure occurred while a trailer was connected to the truck. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the contact was informed that there was no resolution. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 15.

While towing our camper that has solar power our trailer brakes would randomly disconnect. Sometimes for a few seconds but several times for several minutes. After checking all wiring, doing some research and trial & error we discovered that it is a problem with the truck and the solar on the camper that is making the brakes disconnect. This happens randomly but quite often and it happened to us several times while towing in the mountains of Colorado. It is definitely a safety hazard to not have the trailer brakes. We have towed the same camper with other trucks including the 2023 Chevy that we owned before this truck and have never had a problem.

Apr 24, 2024

I have been going through a nightmare with my new 2024 Silverado 2500HD with the trailer brake that randomly connects and disconnects. My wife and I live Part-time in our 5th wheel RV and pull it on average once a week as we move from place to place for 6 mo out of the year. The issue is very random and we have had the truck at two different dealers to try and solve the problem. The Truck dealers point to the RV Mfg and the RV Mfg point to the truck Mfg. After doing quite a bit of searching, I found a GM tech bulletin GM 6379278 in regards to this issue so I now see on the internet and youtube many others are having the same issue. This appears to be quite the life threatening issue that can easily end badly. They talk about a solar pkg or generating package causing this problem, I have neither. The bulletin is applicable to 2024 3500's and 2500's

Oct 13, 2023

I kept getting “check trailer wiring” messages followed by a “trailer disconnected” message while towing a trailer and the trailer brakes would not engage. The trailer would “reconnect” and then “disconnect” constantly while driving. I lost my trailer brakes while trying to brake down a hill. Not having working trailer brakes is extremely dangerous.

Oct 4, 2023

If our trailer is plugged into the truck the warning "check trailer wiring" pops up. The warning ("check trailer wiring") would display and then the message "trailer connected" would generally happen. The trailer breaks disconnect during this time making it extremally dangerous for us and anyone else on the road if we need to stop quickly. This is not an issue with our new trailer as we pulled it with a 2017 Silverado with no issues.

New Silverado 2500 HD LT and new Keystone Cougar 30BHS. My new truck is experiencing random trailer break controller disconnection while towing. This happened yesterday on the first trip bringing it home from the RV Dealership to my house. The trip was 68 miles total. It happened often and without a pattern. It appears that many others are experiencing the same issue. See youtube link below: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Sep 12, 2023

This truck was optioned with the trailer tow package which includes a trailer brake controller. However, if the battery on the trailer is a higher voltage than the truck battery, the trailer brake controller will fail intermittently. This leaves the truck traveling at freeway speeds with no trailer brakes. This is EXTREMELY UNSAFE. GM is aware of the problem and has issued a technical bulleting "23-NA-113 Information on Trailer Brake Disabled or DTC Stored" on June 28, 2023. This is an EXTREMELY hazardous situation and should be resolved immediatlly or the truck owners should be advised to NOT TOW with the trucks until resolved.

While pulling fifth wheel camper the the electronic brake controller looses connection and brakes on the trailer do not work leaving only the truck brakes to stop both truck and trailer. General Motors claims this is caused due to the solar panel on the trailer charging the trailer battery more than the truck battery which back feeds into the system. This problem only occurred on the 2024 models. The same trailer was pulled with a 2021 model with no issues. This is a known problem which Chevrolet has a service bulletin stating such. Reference document # 6379278. At this time there has not been a fix. This is a safety hazard because there is no warning as to when the trailer brakes will stop working.

Aug 20, 2023

When my fifth wheel trailer is attached via the seven pin plug, the truck intermittently fails to recognize the trailer and I get a warning "check trailer wiring." When I get that warning, the integrated trailer brake controller fails to activate the trailer brakes. After a while I get the message "trailer brakes connected" and then the trailer brake controller activates the trailer brakes. This problem does not occur when the trailer is attached to a different truck. Apparently this is a well-known problem that GM has failed to correct or inform customers about. Please see the comments at [XXX] . This is a serious safety hazard as my trailer brakes have failed to activate while descending some very steep grades in the mountains. Aug 7, 2023

When I hook up my 35' fifth wheel camper to the truck the brake controller from the truck to the camper acknowledges the connection then when I start to drive my truck dash states, "check trailer wiring". This is an extremely dangerous condition. At times I will get a message that states that the trailer wiring is connected then the brakes will work for a short time. I just saw a document ID no 6379278 that was posted on line that states what i said above. It has been back to the dealer a couple of times for this.

Aug 3, 2023

When towing my travel trailer with the 2500HD, the electronic trailer brake randomly connects and disconnects while driving. This results in the unsafe operation of the trailer because the brakes aren't functional and puts others at risk if stopping was required during the outage. GM/Chevy has created Document #6379278 which admits that this is their issue but they don't seem to be providing a fix.

Jul 27, 2023

When truck is connected to a trailer with electric brakes, intermittently a check trailer wiring warning flashes on the dashboard screen. When this happens you do not have trailer brakes. It has happened on multiple trailers with 7 pin connections. I have taken it to the dealer twice with no fix other than GM recommending a non GM trailer receptacle. I have taken my trailer to the dealer and they could find no problems. Basically the 2024 Silverado 2500 HD when hooked to trailers with industry standard 7 pin 12 volt receptacle loses trailer brakes. This condition potentially is fatal and a definite hazard to public safety on roads. problem was reproduced at the Chevy dealership in Pensacola Fl. The problem was reproduced on multiple trailers at Great American RV in DeFuniak Springs Fl.

Jul 16, 2023

While towing my fifth wheel trailer, the electric trailer brakes module shuts off with a message "check trailer wiring". When the module shuts off, the trailer brakes do not actuate relying fully on the truck to stop as the trailer brakes will not work. The plug was firmly seated and it caused issues whether using the in bed plug or the bumper plug. After some time, the message would go away and the system would display the message "trailer connected" and the trailer brakes would work again. After some time, the process would repeat several times (30-40 times) primarily from mid morning to evening. I verified plug tightness and applied dielectric grease to ensure a good connection and that did not improve the issue. The trailer is 1 year old and was pulled with 3 other trucks (2 dodge and another Chevy) with no issues at all. I was able to locate a GM bulletin numbered "document id: 6379278" that references this problem and states to disconnect the trailer solar panels while a fix is developed. This was only found on an RV owners forum. I was able to disconnect my solar panels on my trailer and the issue was no longer present with my brakes working properly and no error messages for 10 hours of driving. This is a significant safety issue and needs to be made abundantly clear to drivers who haul trailers. Not all solar panels are easily disconnected and should be done by a qualified electrician due to the potential hazards of their voltage. Additionally, not having trailer brakes while driving on the interstate is a significant safety hazard that greatly increases the chances of an accident as the brakes would stop working without warning including while in use. My vehicle is a scheduled for an inspection at the dealer on 7/22/23.

The trailer brake controller on the vehicle is defective and keeps connecting and disconnecting. It's a known issue to the manufacturer as shown in service bulletin #6379278 image attached. The manufacturers solution is to contact the trailer manufacturer for instructions on how to disable the solar charge controller. I have done this but the trailer manufacturer (Grand Design) will not provide me with this information as they are saying this is a Chevrolet issue and Chevrolet needs to resolve it. This now places me in a situation where I am traveling with a trailer that randomly, and intermittently, has no operating brake system. This places me and the driving public in danger. This problem has been inspected by the manufacturers dealer and they have provided me the technical bulletin referenced above. There is a warning lamp on the dash that informs me of when the trailer brake controller connects and disconnects. This failure first appeared to us on May 30th, 2023 which was the first time we connected to our Grand Design 2500RL trailer. It has been consistently having this issue every time we are connected to the trailer. The truck has been to two Chevrolet dealers so far to try and resolve this issue. I have contacted Chevrolet customer service for an ETA on when this issue is to be resolved and they have none.

Jul 11, 2023

Connecting this trailer to a new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, the trailer brakes cut in and out every minute or so. The truck shows a warning that the trailer brakes are disconnected, and then they reconnected. This happens repeatedly. General Motors and Forest River have been advised of this, but neither have a solution. Forest River does not want to engage with me (as consumer). GM is still working with me to trouble shoot. Theory is that the solar charging on the trailer is causing the issue with the GM vehicle. Truck (not the trailer) was in the dealer and no issues were found on the truck side. In social media groups, there are many others experiencing the same issue.

Component - Integrated Trailer Brake Controller Safety - caused a vehicle skid and loss of control Inspection - it is scheduled to go in to the dealer today Warnings - the dash messages "Trailer Brakes Connected" and "Trailers Brakes Disconnected" displays often when a trailer is connected, as frequently as several times per minute. I believe that NHTSA and GM are aware of issues with the trailer brake connector on these vehicles. The integrated trailer brake controller connects and disconnects the trailer brakes as often as several times per minute. I have confirmed there is no issue with the trailer. The issue appears to be in the truck. This led to a near-miss accident. I was towing a double axle trailer with electric brakes on I-77 in West Virginia. The trailer brake controller disconnected and reconnected throughout the drive with warning messages displaying on the dash. I applied the truck brakes to stop for traffic on a downhill slope in the rain. As I applied the truck brakes the trailer brake controller re-connected and applied the trailer brakes at the relatively heavy force that I was using for the truck brakes because the trailer brakes had disconnected. This caused the combination truck and trailer to jolt and then skid on the wet pavement. The truck is scheduled to be serviced at a GM dealer today.
