DT*: UPDATED 10/25/2006 - EVERYTIME THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND THE ENGINE WAS COLD, IT MADE A KNOCKING NOISE, WHICH CONTINUED UNTIL THE ENGINE WARMED UP. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TOT HE SERVICE DEALER WHO SAID THE NOISE WAS CARBON BUILD-UP ON THE PISTON. I HAVE A CHEVY 2000 SILVERADO Z71 PICK UP THAT HAS PISTON SLAP STARTING AT AROUND 15K MILES AND PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED WHICH THE DEALER STATES IS NORMAL WEAR. THIS EXPENSIVE VEHICLE ALSO HAS A REAR END BANG INTO DRIVE AND THEN REVERSE AGAIN THE DEALER STATES IS NORMAL. RECENTLY I FIXED A SNAPPED CABLE FOR THE DRIVERS WINDOW WHICH THE SAME KIND OF CABLE WAS RECALLED FOR THE TAIL GATE CABLES. I HAVE REPLACED RECALL ITEMS FOR THE TAIL GATE CABLES, DRIVE SHAFT YOLK AND THE ABS SENSORS TO WHICH IT IS STILL NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. ALL OF WHICH WHEN PRESENTED TO THE DEALER AND THE RESPONSE WAS IT IS NORMAL, UNTIL THE RECALL OCCURRED. IT SEEMS THE POLICY OF A COMPANY WHICH CREATES AN INFERIOR PRODUCT IS TO STATE, "IT IS NORMAL" TO THE CONSUMER UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT STEPS WHEN ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN AND MAKES THE DEALER OWN UP TO THE PROBLEMS WITH THE PRODUCTS AND FINALLY TREATS THE CONSUMER WITH MORE COMPASSION, AND TO SOME DEGREE "DECENCY". WHEN I PULLED OFF THE WHEELS YOU COULD SEE WHERE THE PADS ON THE FRONT WHEELS WERE ALMOST GONE, BUT THE REAR SHOES WERE HARDLY WORN. I DID CHANGE THE FRONT PADS. I HAVE TWO GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLES. A 2000 SILVERADO TRUCK AND A 97 OLDS SILHOUETTE. BOTH OF THESE HAVE V6 ENGINES AND NOW I AM BEING TOLD THAT BOTH OF THEM HAVE INTAKE MANIFOLD LEAKS. THE ANTIFREEZE IS LEAKING OUTSIDE OF THE INTAKE, AND IN THE CASE OF MY TRUCK, PROBABLY INTO THE ENGINE. I AM BEING TOLD THREE DIFFERENT MECHANICS, THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE V6. AND AFTER VOICING MY COMPLAINT, FOUND THAT MY BROTHER-IN LAW, HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I CALLED THE GENERAL MOTORS NUMBER IN THE MANUAL AND TOLD THEM THAT I WAS UPSET WITH THE PROBLEMS AND THEY SAID THAT BECAUSE ONE IS A 97 WITH 62000 MILES, IT IS TWO OLD AND THAT MY TRUCK HAS TO MANY MILES (112000). AFTER VEHICLE IS UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND IS SHUT OFF AND REMAINS FOR APPROXIMATELY HALF HOUR, UPON RESTARTING, VEHICLE "TUMBLES." I CONTACTED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE WHO PROVIDED ME WITH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE ENGINE AND THEY HAVE "WASHED THERE HANDS" OF ANY OTHER PROBLEMS THEY MAY OCCUR. MY COMPLAINT IS THE ROUGH IDLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT, AND NOW THE "TUMBLING" IS BEING CAUSED AS A RESULT OF THE PRIOR PROBLEM. I THEN EXPLAINED TO THE SERVICE WRITER, SINCE I'VE WORKED AS A MECHANIC, THAT I'VE NEVER HEARD A NEW OR REBUILT ENGINE KNOCK UNLESS THERE WAS A MISTAKE MADE OR A FAULTY PART INSTALLED. I WAS SHOWN BULLETIN # 01-06-01-028 WHICH STATED MODELS:1999-2002 CHEVROLET/GMC PICKUP & UTILITY MODELS,2002 CADILLAC ESCALADE (2WD) WITH 4.8L,5.3L OR 6.0L ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT AN ENGINE KNOCK NOISE THAT BEGINS IN THE FIRST 12,000-15,000 MILES OF USE. THE KNOCK NOISE IS MOST OFTEN NOTICED DURING START-UP AND TYPICALLY DISAPPEARS WITHIN THE FIRST 5-30 SECONDS (MAY LAST LONGER IN EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURES) SINCE WE LIVE IN ALASKA THIS IS VERY TRUE. THE NOISE IS USUALLY MORE NOTICEABLE ON THE INTIAL START-UP WHEN THE TEMPTURE IS BELOW 50 DEGREES AND MAY BE MORE PRONOUNCED ON THE FIRST START FOLLOWING A LONG TRIP. ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON REPEATEDLY, TOOK TO DEALER BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. SOON AFTER THE VEHICLE STALLED, AND WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALER. THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND THE IGNITION COIL WIRE WERE REPLACED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE.

CHEVROLET HAS DENIED THAT THEIR 99 AND 00 CHEVROLET SILVERADOS DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIER NEW ENGINES. I KNOW OF NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE THIS PROBLEM WHICH CHEVROLET ACKNOWLEDGES AS A NORMAL SOUND. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE TRUCK CAN NOT BE FIXED BECAUSE THE NEW ONES MAKE THE SAME NOISE. I HAVE DRIVEN OTHER COMPRIABLE TRUCKS AND THEY DO NOT HAVE THE ENGINE PING/KNOCK. THE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT THE NOISE WILL EVENTUALLY GO AWAY, BUT I HAVE SEEN TRUCKS WITH 19000 WITH THE NOISE CONTINUING. THIS PROBLEM COULD INCREASE EMMISIONS IF IT IS INDEED A PING/KNOCK. IF THIS PROBLEM PERSISTS WITH NO FIX FROM CHEVROLET, I COULD HAVE ENGINGE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE PING/KNOCK THAT WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
